GATE Strategies and the
Common Core
Enhancing Gifted Student Learning
Julie Hull
Orange County Department of Education
GATE Coordinator
The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) are
designed to be rigorous and relevant to the real world,
reflecting the skills needed for college and career
readiness. Although the CCSS are more rigorous, they
fall short of meeting the needs of the gifted learner.
Differentiated instruction will continue to be essential to
enhance the learning of our gifted students.
Gifted teachers will need to continue to differentiate
content, process, and product using a variety of
methodology. Instructional strategies like depth and
complexity, learning centers, and curriculum
compacting can extend the common core standards to
enhance gifted student learning.
Additionally, teachers of the gifted can serve as a
valuable resource at the school site to help with the
implementation process of the common core
standards.
Parent Perspective
“We (Parents) often feel that the kids who are
doing well in school, and are high achievers
get “overlooked” by the community in this
“test driven” day and age. Academic
Competitions (like History Day) are a
wonderful way for gifted students to further
their thirst for knowledge and love of
learning!”
OCC GATE
presents
38 th Annual Conference
about Gifted Children
OCC GATE is excited about the Common
Core Standards and place at the front of their
agenda ways to support teachers in their
search for the best instructional practices.
These practices meet the learning needs of
not only their high ability students, but provide
rigorous learning experiences for all students
in their classrooms. The strategies set forth
by the California Recommended Standards
for GATE Programming strongly align with
the new Common Core. These strategies
that promote deeper investigation of content
through critical thinking and problem solving
will be shared by both experts in the field and
exemplary classroom teachers at our yearly
conference this fall.
Leadership Training
On Tuesday, August 14 th , 70 teachers from
across Orange County met at the USC
Orange County Education Center for
leadership training in Irvine to examine the
area of gifted education and the Common
Core.
This event begins a year of collaboration with
Dr. Sandra Kaplan, professor at USC,
Rossier School of Education. Dr. Kaplan is
partnering with OCC GATE to train Orange
County teachers to serve in a leadership
capacity supporting gifted and general
education teachers as they begin
implementation of the Common Core State
Standards.
The goal of the cohort work is to build the
capacity of teachers in Orange County who
will serve as leaders in extending the
common core standards for gifted learners in
their district. Teachers who were selected to
participate are committed to translating what
was learned during the training into
classroom instruction.
Dr. Kaplan will provide lessons that align with
the CCSS, promote higher order thinking
skills, and enhance learning with depth and
complexity. OCC GATE is excited to
