Habits of a Scholar: *Scholarliness
Ponder Ideas: Scholars take time to think about what they
are learning.
Preparation: Scholars are prepared and ready to learn with
all the tools necessary for the job.
Academic Humility: Scholars understand that no matter
how much we learn, there is always more to learn.
Save Ideas: Scholars organize their learning and find ways
to save their ideas.
Perseverance: Scholars exercise their minds and learn to
keep going, even when faced with hard work.
Intellectual Risk Taking: Scholars take intellectual risks.
They think “outside the box.”
Excellence: Scholars take pride in their work and seek
excellence in their finished products.
Curiosity: Scholars are curious about learning and life and
are willing to ask questions and seek answers.
Multiple Perspectives: Scholars look at the world using
many perspectives.
Varied Resources: Scholars use many resources when
learning.
Goal Setting: Scholars set long and short term goals in life
and learning.
*Scholarliness developed by Dr. Sandra Kaplan, USC
Parent Perspective
“We (Parents) often feel that the kids who are
doing well in school, and are high achievers
get “overlooked” by the community in this
“test driven” day and age. Academic
Competitions (like History Day) are a
wonderful way for gifted students to further
their thirst for knowledge and love of
learning!”
OCC GATE
presents
38 th Annual Conference
about Gifted Children
OCC GATE is excited about the Common
Core Standards and place at the front of their
agenda ways to support teachers in their
search for the best instructional practices.
These practices meet the learning needs of
not only their high ability students, but provide
rigorous learning experiences for all students
in their classrooms. The strategies set forth
by the California Recommended Standards
for GATE Programming strongly align with
the new Common Core. These strategies
that promote deeper investigation of content
through critical thinking and problem solving
will be shared by both experts in the field and
exemplary classroom teachers at our yearly
conference this fall.
