Habits of a Scholar: *Scholarliness Ponder Ideas: Scholars take time to think about what they are learning. Preparation: Scholars are prepared and ready to learn with all the tools necessary for the job. Academic Humility: Scholars understand that no matter how much we learn, there is always more to learn. Save Ideas: Scholars organize their learning and find ways to save their ideas. Perseverance: Scholars exercise their minds and learn to keep going, even when faced with hard work. Intellectual Risk Taking: Scholars take intellectual risks. They think “outside the box.” Excellence: Scholars take pride in their work and seek excellence in their finished products. Curiosity: Scholars are curious about learning and life and are willing to ask questions and seek answers. Multiple Perspectives: Scholars look at the world using many perspectives. Registration Information: http://elearns.org PARENT NIGHT: FOR PARENTS OF GIFTED MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ORANGE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION JANUARY 24, 2013 4:00 – 6:00 PM FEATURED SPEAKER: DAVID GHOOGASIAN Report: USC/OCC GATE Leadership Training On Tuesday, August 14 th , 70 teachers from across Orange County met at the USC Orange County Education Center for leadership training in Irvine to examine the area of gifted education and the Common Core. This event begins a year of collaboration with Dr. Sandra Kaplan, professor at USC, Rossier School of Education. Dr. Kaplan is partnering with OCC GATE to train Orange County teachers to serve in a leadership capacity supporting gifted and general education teachers as they begin implementation of the Common Core State Standards. The goal of the cohort work is to build the capacity of teachers in Orange County who will serve as leaders in extending the common core standards for gifted learners in their district. Teachers who were selected to participate are committed to translating what was learned during the training into classroom instruction. Dr. Kaplan will provide lessons that align with the CCSS, promote higher order thinking skills, and enhance learning with depth and complexity. OCC GATE is excited to partnership with Dr. Kaplan and looks forward to an exciting year of learning.
