featured prominently as an example of women’s ‘verbal wit’ misfiring, with all kinds of<br />

explanations, some psychological, some not, for what is really going on behind her verbal slips.<br />

The best candidates wrote insightfully about the ambivalence and cultural importance of Julia<br />

and Faukland. After Volpone and the Chaucerian contexts, which A2 students generally handle<br />

well, no AO4 issues were embraced more confidently than those pertaining to Sheridan’s play.<br />
