The posters feature life in the great outdoors, for example, beaches, country pursuits and the bush, pointing to those things that were seen to make Australia distinctive. Taking their cue from the posters designed for the Australian National Travel Association, the stamps are very nostalgic in their look, thus continuing the style of the Bon Voyage (2004) series. While poster art has a long history in Australia it has also been in and out of fashion. Having been unfashionable for some time, a poster renaissance began in Australia in the 1920s, when the Victorian Railways Betterment Board began commissioning posters advertising Victoria as a tourist destination. This renaissance was cemented when the Arts and Crafts Society of Victoria held a poster show in April 1930 – suddenly poster competitions became the rage. Each state government had its own tourist bureau, and when the Australian National Travel Association (ANTA) opened its doors in 1929 in Melbourne, it had the broad charter for promoting Australia first. The board of ANTA represented the full spectrum of interests in national travel promotion – general business interests, Australian railways, overseas shipping interests, hotel interests and the federal government. ANTA immediately began commissioning poster artists and journalists to promote Australia, including noted graphic artists Percy Trompf, John Vickery, James Northfield, Gert Sellheim and Douglas Annand. Travel posters were designed to attract, persuade and encourage visitors to explore Australia’s most desirable tourist destinations, and to take adventure trips into the more remote regions. The posters were widely distributed in Australia and overseas. By 1934 ANTA had printed 140,000 posters for every Australian state, and by reciprocal arrangement had obtained facilities for the continuous exhibition 12 | stamp bulletin australia | no. 287 | April – June 2007

A large number of these posters were exhibited in the windows of travel agencies and shipping offices. With the onset of World War II ANTA closed its overseas offices and tourism promotion virtually stopped. Products with this stamp issue include a prestige booklet, maxicards and postcards. The products feature images of Australian touring from an era when holidaying wasn’t simply getting to and from your destination in the quickest possible time. It was seen as a time to relax and take the opportunity to enjoy the scenery.
