Dunbar HISTORIC SHIPWRECKS 1 MAY 2007 1534001 fi rst day cover (gummed) 16 | stamp bulletin australia | no. 287 | April – June 2007 On an island continent such as Australia, maritime culture has always been important, although particularly in past times. Convict transportation, settlement, and sealing and whaling from the late 18th century saw ocean-going vessels gain a real presence, but maritime culture flourished around Australia’s coasts and harbours during the 19th century. The growth in maritime traffic was, not surprisingly, accompanied by an increase in the number of shipwrecks. There have been literally thousands of disasters since the first Dutch vessels visited our shores in the 17th century. To date, the National Shipwrecks Database, maintained by the Department of Environment and Heritage, lists 7,303 wrecks lying on the ocean floor around our coastline. Our single past issue on this theme featured shipwrecks from the 17th and 18th centuries. This stamp issue advances the theme historically, featuring three of the most calamitous shipwrecks of the 19th century, each with a remarkable tale of loss and survival. Admella The Admella was an iron-hulled steamship built in Glasgow, which also carried masts and sails. It was named after the three colonial towns that it carried passengers between: Adelaide, Melbourne and Launceston. The Admella came to grief as it sailed from Adelaide to Melbourne, when it struck a reef on the south-eastern coastline of South Australia on 6 August 1859. The hull of the vessel broke into three within 15 minutes of impact. Most of the 89 lives were lost not in the immediate fiasco but in the eight-day rescue mission that followed. Some passengers succumbed to thirst and exhaustion, while others were pulled from the wreck by the battering surf, or else died while trying to reach the nearby shore. Only 24 people survived. Loch Ard This three-masted iron clipper was built in Glasgow in 1873. Loch Line clippers would bring passengers to Australia, returning with wool for the home market. The Loch Ard was wrecked on its third voyage to Australia, early on 1 June 1878. The conditions were perilous due to fog and bad weather as the vessel negotiated the difficult western entrance to the Bass Strait. The danger became obvious to the passengers and crew as the ship lurched dangerously close to the towering cliffs along what is now known as Shipwreck Coast. The ship struck Mutton Bird Island (an island-rock) and sank quickly. Crewman

The subject of this stamp issue will pique the interest of maritime collectors and those interested in the tragedies that have occured in Australian waters. The stamp pack features a 19th century map of Australia, and the maxicards reproduce paintings associated with the wrecks. Dunbar The Dunbar shipwreck is Sydney’s worst maritime tragedy. First launched in 1854, this large wooden clipper was considered a first-class sailing ship. It left Plymouth (UK) on 31 May 1857, carrying passengers to Sydney. Tragedy struck as it approached its destination. Weather conditions were bleak and visibility poor on the evening of 20 August, when Captain Green attempted to sail into Port Jackson. Confused by the bad weather, and possibly miscalculating his position, Green ordered the ship to head towards what he believed to be the entrance to Port Jackson. Instead it was driven into the cliffs near the ill-sited Macquarie lighthouse at South Head. Of the 121 passengers and crew aboard, crewman James Johnson was the only survivor. Thrown onto rocks by the surf, he clung to the cliffface for 36 hours before being hauled 60 metres to safety.
