Grand Forks, N.D., is a classic university town. Located in the heart of
the Red River Valley on Interstate 29, the largely residential town offers
a community environment with all the amenities of a large urban area
and the safety and convenience of a small community, and is
within driving distance of great amenities in the region.
residents and spanning two states. Because of its diversity,
there’s always live theatre, musical performances, art shows or a
concert from rock to the Grand Forks Symphony somewhere in
sprouted at the southwest end of the city, anchored by the Columbia
Mall and Market Place. However, the heart of the Grand Cities is
downtown, which spans the Red River. Downtown features a large
variety of options and events, from a Farmer’s Market at the Town
Square to fine dining.
Fighting Sioux
2010-11 track & cross country
The foundation of UND athletics is the unwavering passion
of Fighting Sioux fans, the nation’s best.
“I’ve never been to a place that’s more proud of its athletes
and its athletics than UND.”
strength and conditioning
mission
It is our mission to physically and mentally
prepare the student-athlete for the rigors
of collegiate athletics, by implementing
professionally designed, scientifically
sound training programs, designed
specifically to reduce the incidence of
injury and help each team and studentathlete
reach their full athletic potential.
PHilosoPHy
We believe that strength and conditioning
is crucial to the complete development
of the student-athlete. The philosophy of
our strength and conditioning program
is based on the belief that what occurs in
the weight room and field transfers to the
playing surface. We train sport specifically with the goal of enhancing
athleticism. We also believe in the importance of work ethic, attitude,
accountability and mental toughness and that these qualities can
be developed and enhanced through our strength and conditioning
program.
At the University of North Dakota, one program, functioning behind
the scenes, but which should not be taken lightly, is the strength and
conditioning program. The strength and conditioning program at UND
is among the finest in Division I and vital to the success of all UND athletic
teams. The strength and conditioning staff commits themselves to the
development of size, strength, power, speed, agility, conditioning, and
body composition of each student-athlete. The goal of the strength staff
is to develop the athlete and team to reach their maximum potential
throughout their career while staying injury free.
Nate Baukol, director of strength and conditioning, oversees the
program and facilities. Baukol has three full-time assistant coaches and
one graduate assistant coach to assist him.
Together they direct and monitor the training of over 500 studentathletes
in 20 sports at UND. UND also boasts some of the finest
strength training facilities around. The facilities include the Ralph
Engelstad Arena weight room, the Memorial Stadium weight room, and
the Hyslop Sports Center weight room.
Training has become a year-round activity, with a student athlete
spending as much time on physical development as any other part
of their sport throughout the year. Student-athletes follow either offseason
or in-season programs, which are individualized specific to the
athlete and sport. Off-season programs are five days a week, summer
months included.
Each athlete receives a comprehensive summer training manual to
follow, given that a member of the strength staff won’t be supervising
them. In-season programs are typically 45-minute sessions, two to three
days per week, supervised by the strength and conditioning staff.
The Fighting Sioux volleyball program trains at the Betty Engelstad
Sioux Center’s Brown and Bender Performance Center, which was
graciously donated by Mark Brown and David Bender during the 2005-
06 season.

steve Westereng
Director of Sports Medicine
Dr. Greg Greek
Team Physician
One of the unfortunate aspects of athletics
is that injuries do occur. However, every
student-athlete from UND athletic teams
are under excellent care thanks to the
UND Divison of Sports Medicine and its
umbrella of staff, facilities and training.
With a staff of nine faculty athletic trainers,
two graduate assistant athletic trainers
and 30 athletic training students headed
by director of sports medicine Steve
Westereng, UND student-athletes are in
good hands, returning them quickly and
safely to participation.
The UND Division of Sports Medicine was
formed in 1990. Additionally, the bachelor
of science in athletic training degree and the UND Center for Sports
Medicine was founded. The athletic training education program was the
first program in the nation to be placed directly in a school of medicine
and is housed within the Department of Family Medicine, combining
the efforts of the UND Athletic Training program and the UND School of
Medicine and Health Sciences.
UND’s progressive thinking makes the institution a leader in the field
of athletic training. Moreover, the program’s affiliation with the School
of Medicine helps both the athletic training student and the studentathlete.
Completion of the bachelor of science in athletic training
allows the student to sit for the board of certification exam to become
a certified athletic trainer (ATC).
The student-athletes also benefit from having a wealth of competent
individuals getting them back into action.
In order to be accepted into the athletic training program, which
received a seven-year accreditation in 2001 (note: UND will receive
word in August 2008 of re-accreditation) from CAAHEP, a student must
complete 100 hours of observation, fill out a formal application, and
have a minimum GPA of 2.75.
The Division of Sports Medicine also has an outpatient facility, the
UND Center for Sports Medicine, which specializes in rehabilitation of
orthopedic injuries. UND student-athletes, as well as the general public,
utilize this facility to decrease pain, increase strength, and improve
range of motion of injuries. Many of the injuries seen in the Center for
Sports Medicine are significant, such as pre- and post-surgical issues.
The center is staffed by Cathy Ziegler, PT/ATC, and Robin Tracy, PT/
ATC, who have experience with high school, college, and professional
athletes.
Whether it is reading to area school children or lending their time to countless charitable organizations or providing disaster relief, UND’s
student-athletes pride themselves on their community involvement and have long been looked upon as pillars within the UND and Grand Forks
communities. In 2009-10 alone, UND student-athletes logged nearly 7,000 hours of community service.
has also taught at the University of California, Berkeley.
Kelley earned his bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry from Abilene
AThlETIcS DIREcToR
Brian Faison
Brian Faison is his third year as athletics director at the University of
North Dakota. Faison assumed his duties at UND in May of 2008.
Faison’s first year was a busy one, leading Fighting Sioux athletics
through its first year of transition to NCAA Division I status for all
of its sports programs. He secured conference membership for 16
of UND’s 20 sports in the Great West Conference, restructured the
athletics department and enhanced UND’s statewide profile through
community outreach initiatives and an expanded Fighting Sioux
Sports Network.
In Faison’s second year, student-athletes continued their tradition of
academic excellence: four student-athletes were named academic All-
Americans by ESPN the Magazine; two student-athletes received NCAA
postgraduate scholarships; and a school-record 111 student-athletes
received academic all-conference honors.
Alumni and fan support continued to grow: annual giving to the
Fighting Sioux Club set another record; volleyball set a single-season
attendance record; women’s hockey finished seventh in the nation in
average attendance; and men’s hockey finished second in the nation in
average and total attendance.
Competitively, UND teams again enjoyed outstanding seasons:
volleyball, women’s basketball and softball all won Great West
Conference championships; men’s hockey won the Broadmoor Trophy,
the WCHA Final Five championship, and qualified for its eighth straight
NCAA tournament appearance; and football enjoyed its seventh
straight winning season.
Prior to joining UND, Faison served as special assistant to the president
for athletics development (2004-07) and director of athletics (1999-04)
at New Mexico State University. Before that, he served as the director
of development for the National Children’s Cancer Society (1995-1999).
Faison gained experience in Division I administration as the director
of athletics at Indiana State University (1988-1995), assistant athletics
director for development at the University of Louisville (1984-1988)
and assistant athletics director for promotions and fund raising at
Illinois State University (1979-1984). He also had stints as the assistant
manager for athletic public relations at the University of Missouri (1978-
1979) and assistant director for alumni activities at the University of
Missouri (1974-1978).
Faison received his bachelor’s
degree in 1972 from the
University of Missouri and
is also a 1997 graduate of
the National Planned Giving
Institute.
Faison and his wife, Donna,
have three sons: Jonathan,
Matthew and Bradley.
DICK clay
Head Coach
Years at UND: 26th
Hometown: Dawson, Minn .
Alma mater: St . Cloud State (‘82)
One of the longest-tenured coaches in the history of Sioux athletics,
the 2010-11 season marks the 26th year of Dick Clay’s decorated
coaching career at UND . It also marks a year of change for Clay, who
has added the reigns of the men’s track and field and cross country
programs after having served as women’s track and cross country head
coach since 1985 .
The 2010 track and field season was a memorable one for the Sioux
women, as Clay’s student-athletes set numerous school records . At the
Great West Conference Indoor Championship, junior Jessica Butler won
the 60-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 8 .98 seconds and led
the Sioux to a third-place finish .At the GWC Outdoor Championship,
Brenny was the runner-up in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter
runs .
Also during the outdoor season, sophomore Emily Emerson was twice
named GWC Athlete of the Week . UND’s quartet of Mikaela Hirst, Paige
Kuplic, Cheri Boyer and Taryn Anderson broke an 11-year old record
in the 800-meter relay at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational .
Several Sioux athletes also recorded times, throws and jumps that have
cracked UND’s all-time top-10 lists .
Clay’s women’s cross country team earned team and individual runnerup
honors at the 2009 Great West Conference Championship; the Sioux
finished second in the team standings while senior Brittany Brenny
earned her second straight all-conference first team nod by taking
second in the individual standings . Brenny was joined on the allconference
team by teammate and second-team selection Katherine
Enabnit .
In 2008-09, UND’s first as a Division I program, Clay guided the
Sioux to a third-place finish at the inaugural Great West Conference
Cross Country Championship, where three of his runners earned allconference
honors: Brenny (first team), Mandy Gefroh (first) and Emily
Emerson (second) .
Clay’s track and field team finished fourth at the 2009 GWC Outdoor
Championship, highlighted by individual conference titles by
Jessica Clausnitzer (pole vault) and Kristi Dahlheimer (3,000-meter
steeplechase) . The Sioux also placed fourth at the 2009 GWC Indoor
Championship, led by a pair of individual titles from Clausnitzer, a twotime
Division II All-American, in the 60-meter hurdles and the pole
vault .
A hallmark of Clay’s coaching career at UND has been academic succes,
and the 2009-10 was as successful as any . Clay’s women’s track and field
team boasted the sixth-highest grade point average (3 .5) in Division I
last season, earning the team 2010 Division I Women’s All-Academic
Track and Field Team honors by the U .S . Track and Field and Cross
Senior Josh LaBlanc cracked the top five in three of
the five meets in which he competed. He was also
named to the GWC Fall All-Academic team.
It was a season of change for the Fighting
Sioux cross countr team in 2010 .
Head coach Mike Grandall retired during the
summer after 28 seasons at the helm of the
program, handing over the reigns to longtime
women’s head coach Dick Clay, himself a UND
coaching veteran of more than 25 years .
Clay guided the Sioux through a consistently
competitive season and a sixth-place finish
at the Great West Conference Championship
that was one spot higher than the preseason
coaches poll had predicited .
The Sioux were paced throughout the season
by senior standout Josh LaBlanc (International
Falls, Minn .), who provided three top-five
finishes in his five meets . LaBlanc was named
GWC Athlete of the Week on Sept . 15 after finishing
as the runner-up at the Eastern Illinois
Panther Open .
LaBlanc and the Sioux had opened the season
one week earlier by hosting the annual UND
Ron Pynn Invitational . Although the Sioux
fell to Seattle and South Dakota State in the
double dual, LaBlanc provided a fourth-place
individual finish to lead the team .
After splitting duals with the host Panthers
and Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at the EIU
Panther Open, UND traveled to Minneapolis
to compete in the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational,
hosted by the University of Minnesota .
LaBlanc was outstanding once again, charting
the 8K course in 26:12 to place 96th among a
field of 213 runners .
2010-11 track & cross country
UND tuned up for the season’s final stretch the
following week in Brookings, S .D ., with a dual
against South Dakota State . LaBlanc shaved
nearly a minute off of his previous week’s effort
to place fourth among 20 runners .
Following an open week, UND returned to
action at the University of Arkansas’ annual
Chile Pepper Festival . With the Sioux running
without LaBlanc, junior Tyler Rose (Brainerd,
Minn .) stepped forward to pace the squad .
Rose clocked a 10K time of 32:41 .47, placing
him 177th in a field of 463 runners .
The Sioux were led by a new face at the 2010
GWC Championship . Junior Adam Stainiger
(Chisholm, Minn .), who transfered from Garden
City (Kan .) Community College prior to
the season, placed 19th at his first Division I
conference meet .
After the season, both LaBlanc (electrical engineering)
and Rose (biology and pre-health)
were named to the 2010 GWC Fall All-Academic
team, which recognizes those with a
mimimum cumulative grade point average
of 3 .2 and who contribute significantly to his
team’s success .
Junior Adam Stainiger, who transferred to UND
from Garden City (Kan.) Community College, was
2010 cross country season review 27

2010-11 und track & cross country
Senior Brandon Quesenberry is the defending
Great West outdoor shot put champion.
Dick Clay takes over the reigns of the men’s
track and field program for the first time in
2011, and inherits a talented roster that boasts
an intriguing mix of upperclassmen and underlcassmen
.
The roster includes only three seniors and
three juniors, compared to 12 freshmen and
five sophomores . However, two of those three
seniors are defending Great West Conference
champions in their respective events .
The incoming freshman class is heavy on both
quantity and quality, which should ensure
Clay and the Sioux will field a team that will be
highly competitive in 2011 .
THROWS
An undeniable strength of the 2011 Sioux
will be the team’s group of throwers, which
includes the likes of Great West Conference
champions Creighton Schroyer (Sr ., Pipestone,
Minn .) and Brandon Quesenberry (Sr .,
Billings, Mont .) .
Last season, Schroyer won his second straight
conference championship in the indoor shot
put, while Quesenberry captured outdoor
shot put crown .
The senior duo heads up an impressive group
that will also include talented freshmen
Shawn Johnson (Eveleth, Minn .) and Roman
Waldera (Minot, N .D .) .
DISTANCE/mID-DISTANCE
UND boasts a deep corps of distance runners,
headed by senior Josh LaBlanc (International
Falls, Minn .), and juniors Tyler Rose (Brainerd,
Minn .) and Adam Stainiger (Chisholm,
Minn .) .
28 2011 track & field preview
LaBlanc put together a standout junior season
in 2010, setting school indoor records in both
the 3,000-meters (8:33 .46) and the distance
medley relay (10:14 .40) . LaBlanc, a previous
All-GWC Cross Country performer, went on to
take runner-up honors in the 3,000-meters at
the 2010 GWC Championship .
Rose was also a member of the record-setting
distance medley relay, and also scored for the
Sioux in the 1,500-meters at the GWC Outdoor
Championship .
Stainiger, who transferred to UND from Garden
City (Kan .) Community College, was UND’s top
finisher at the GWC Cross Country Championship
last fall .
Other distance runners in the mix include
sophomore David Niday (Richfield, Minn .)
and freshmen Jerrod Braam (Pequot Lakes,
Minn .), James Dean (Brainerd, Minn .), Kyle
Economy (Victoria, Minn .), Chris Knutson
(Brainerd, Minn .), Dwight mandimika (Harare,
Zimbabwe) and Ross Nelson (Apple Valley,
Minn .) .
In the mid-distance events, sophomore Chris
Benson (Devils Lake, N .D .) and freshmen Kent
Luetzen (Minot, N .D .) and Jesse Fenstermacher
(Hibbing, Minn .) will asked to be key
contributors .
SPRINTS
Junior Chris Stoks (Virginia, Minn .) will anchor
the team’s group of sprinters after being
named the UND’s Most Valuable Runner as a
sophomore in 2010 . Stoks nabbed top-six finishes
in the 400-meter dash and 4x100-meter
relay at the GWC Outdoor Championship, and
the 400-meters at the GWC Indoor Championship
.
Chris Stoks was named UND’s Most Valuable
Runner as a sophomore in 2010.
Senior Josh LaBlanc broke a pair of indoor school
records in 2010.
Sophomore Shawn Reich (Grand Forks, N .D .)
and freshmen Reilly mathiason (Grafton,
N .D .) and Jordan Fisk (Langdon, N .D .) will also
provide solid depth .
JUmPS/HURDLES
Sophomore Bryant Halvorson (Rugby, N .D .)
is coming off of an outstanding freshman
campaign in which he was named UND’s
Rookie of the Year . He placed seventh in the
long jump at both the GWC Indoor and Outdoor
Championships, and looks to build on his
performance .
Freshman matthew Harris (Sidney, Mont .)
looks to make an immediate impact in the
pole vault, while sophomore matthew mc-
Creary (Grand Forks, N .D .) will be in the hurdles
mix .
Ed Grom
GWC Commissioner
The Great West Conference is
made up of 10 intercollegiate institutions
that range geographically
from New Jersey to Texas to
California . The 10 member schools
are spread out over seven states
and four time zones, giving each
school added exposure - both in
terms of media and recruiting - in
new destinations .
The conference affiliation also
generates much interest within
the 10 institutions’ substantial
alumni base .
The conference, which began as
a football-only league, took a giant leap in the collegiate athletic
world when the conference expanded to include several additional
sports and several new members .
2010-11 track & cross country
Joining the league on July 10, 2008 were Houston Baptist University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, University of North Dakota, University
of South Dakota, Texas-Pan American and Utah Valley University . Chicago State accepted the league’s invitation to join in October, 2008 . These
seven schools joined football only members Cal Poly, UC Davis and Southern Utah University to make up the 10-member league .
In addition to football, championships conducted during the 2008-09 academic year were men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s
indoor and outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s golf . Team sports in baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball begin
league play in 2009-10 .
As the conference began planning for multi-team sport competition in 2009-10, several teams were added in the sports of women’s soccer and
baseball to help provide a more diverse and competitive field . Delaware State, Howard and South Carolina State joined as associate members
in women’s soccer, giving the Great West two, four-team divisions . The associate members, plus NJIT, make up the Eastern Division, while North
Dakota, South Dakota, Houston Baptist and Utah Valley play in the
West . Northern Colorado and New York Institute of Technology joined
as associate members in baseball, giving the Great West eight playing
members . Seattle University was added as an associate member in
cross country and track and field in 2009 .
Officially announced Feb . 25, 2004, charter members of the Great West
Football Conference were California Polytechnic State University; University
of California, Davis; North Dakota State University; University
of Northern Colorado; South Dakota State University; and Southern
Utah University . Conference competition began on Sept . 4, 2004 with
UC Davis scoring a 52-0 win over South Dakota State and Northern
Colorado notching a 15-13 win over North Dakota State .
The Great West continues its proud tradition in football and has been
rated as one of the best in Football Championship Subdivision and
ahead of Football Bowl Subdivision leagues such as the Mid-American
Conference and the Sun Belt .
The Great West Conference recognizes student-athletes on both a
weekly and full-season basis . Individual awards include players of
the week; all-conference teams; an academic all-conference team;
and player, newcomer and coach of the year awards . The league also
crowns team champions for both regular season and post-season
competition .
The governance of the Great West Conference remains primarily with
the member institutions . Each member institution is represented
on the President’s Council by its respective CEO . The general operations
and management of the Conference will be conducted by the
directors of athletics and senior woman administrators (Joint Council) .
Scheduling of contests, assignment of officials and certain media relations
functions remain with member institutions .
UND President Dr. Robert Kelley (left) and director of athletics Brian Faison announced
UND’s membership into the Great West Conference in July of 2008.
By Jackie DeMolee, UND Athletics
Ron Pynn was an educator at the University of North Dakota
for 29 years in political science, but he didn’t only shape the
minds of students in the classroom . He has projected his love
for track and field and cross country onto the programs at UND .
Pynn has been a long time supporter of cross country and track
and field .
The Ron Pynn Invitational, UND’s
annual cross country meet, was
established in 2002 to honor
Pynn for his many contributions
to the teams, including travelling
with the teams for support,
working events and financially
supporting the program . He said
that he’s always had a passion
for the sport and the studentathletes
involved .
Ron Pynn
“It [running] takes a special brand of
discipline,” said Pynn . “What drives them
[athletes] to run drives them to succeed in other areas of their life .”
This is only one of the many reasons Pynn feels so passionate about the
program at UND .
“It’s been exciting each and every year,” said longtime UND men’s cross
country and track and field head coach Mike Grandall, who retired following
the 2009-10 season . “It’s great to have him back .”
Pynn uses the Invitational as an opportunity to visit the University and
friends .
“I think the world of the coaches,” he said . “The way they treat the athletes,
but not just as UND athletes, but as students too .”
Pynn currently resides in Burlington, Vt ., but makes the trek back to
UND each year for the Invitational .
The 2010 cross country team with Ron Pynn at the Ron Pynn Invitational.
Ray Richards Golf Course is home to the Ron Pynn Invitational . The course
is set up as a 5K for women and 8K for men, providing a challenging route
well-known in the Upper Midwest .
The Division I transition has changed the Invitational somewhat, but
it doesn’t change the meaning behind the name of the event or how
important the event is to the head coaches of the men’s and women’s
cross country teams and Pynn .
“What drives them to run drives them to succeed
in other areas of life.”
