created for: Summit <strong>Yarn</strong> Studio in March 2010<br />

Materials: 800-1000 yards of fingering to dk weight yarn (superwash<br />

preferable)<br />

US 5-6 32inch circular needles<br />

Tapestry needle for burying ends<br />

Gauge: six sts equals one inch<br />

Abbreviations: K = knit<br />

P = purl<br />

K2tog ( / ) = knit two sts together<br />

SSK ( \ ) = slip one stitch as if to knit, slip a second stitch as<br />

if to knit, insert LH needle through these two sts<br />

And knit the sts together<br />

YO = yarn over (bring yarn to front of knitting between the<br />

needles, over the RH needle and work next knitted st<br />

Cast on 176 stitches and knit six (6) rows (garter stitch). Continue,<br />

remembering to knit the first and last three (3) stitches of every row, and


work rows one through four of the <strong>Old</strong> <strong>Shale</strong> Lace pattern a total of fifty<br />

times. The rows, written out are as follows:<br />

1. K3, [(k2tog x 3), (yo, k1) x 5, yo, (ssk x 3)] X 10, k3<br />

2. K3, purl to last three sts, K3<br />

3. KNIT<br />

4. KNIT<br />

After <strong>com</strong>pleting 50 four-row pattern repeats, work six rows in garter stitch<br />

(knit every row). Bind off using stretchy lace bind-off: * knit two stitches,<br />

insert LH needle through them (like SSK) and knit them together, knit one<br />

more stitch; repeat from * until all sts are bound off. Fasten off yarn and<br />

bury ends with the tapestry needle. Block lightly with steam iron. Take<br />

pictures of blanky with intended Baby!<br />
