This is an old Shetland <strong>Lace</strong> pattern that was used in the 1800ʼs to imitate patches of<br />

fields in a pastoral countryside...again reflective of the Victorian obsession with imitating<br />

Nature through their Artwork.<br />

Materials: 80-100 yards of worsted wool or cotton, US8 (5mm) needles<br />

Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows per four inches in Stockinette Stitch<br />

Abbreviations: K = knit P = purl YO = yarn over<br />

K2tog = knit two stitches together<br />

SSK = slip one stitch as if to purl, then slip another stitch as if to purl,<br />

insert LH needle through the 2 sts and knit them together<br />

SEED = *K1, P1; rep from * to last st, end K1 on an odd number of sts


CAST ON 45 stitches and SEED four rows. Next row: SEED 40 sts, make one new<br />

stitch, end with SEED 5 stitches (total 46 sts).<br />

Set foundation and ALL WRONG SIDE (WS) rows:<br />

SEED 5, K3, P to last 8 sts, K3, SEED 5.<br />

BEGINNING on the RIGHT SIDE (RS):<br />

Row 1: Seed 5, K3, (YO, SSK, K4, K2tog, YO, K2) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row 2 AND ALL WS ROWS: Seed 5, K3, P to last 8 sts, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row 3: Seed 5, K3, (YO, SSK, K4, K2tog, YO, K2) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row 5: Seed 5, K3, (YO, SSK, K4, K2tog, YO, K2) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row 7: Seed 5, K3, (YO, SSK, K4, K2tog, YO, K2) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

THINGS CHANGE HERE...JUST A HEADS UP:<br />

Row 9: Seed 5, K3, (K1, K2tog, YO, K2, YO, SSK, K3) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row11: Seed 5, K3, (K1, K2tog, YO, K2, YO, SSK, K3) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row13: Seed 5, K3, (K1, K2tog, YO, K2, YO, SSK, K3) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row15: Seed 5, K3, (K1, K2tog, YO, K2, YO, SSK, K3) X 3, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Row16: Seed 5, K3, P to last 8 sts, K3, Seed 5.<br />

Repeat rows 1 - 16 until piece measures 9.25 inches from cast-on edge.<br />

Next row: Seed 40 sts, K2tog, (P1, K1) X 2. THEN SEED 4 MORE ROWS.<br />

<strong>Work</strong> 8 rows in Garter Stitch to prepare for the next square if you are making the<br />

afghan. Place stitches on holder or leave on needle until next Wednesday!<br />
