Since the opening of what was then Olympic Memorial Hospital in 1951, Olympic Medical Center has dedicated our time and talents toward providing excellence in health care to residents of the Olympic Peninsula. Our commitment to excellence is demonstrated throughout the hospital – in our dedication to invest in the latest advancements in technology and evidence-based techniques, the expertise of our physicians and staff, and the variety of services we provide to meet the needs of our community. In this issue of Living Well, you can read about some of our investments and the multitude of services we offer: From a hospitalist program dedicated to around-the-clock care (pages 4 and 5), advancements in anesthesia (page 8) and pain management in obstetrics (page 9) to electronic medical records designed to expedite your patient experience and enhance safety (page 10). Improvements in technology and technique are important parts of providing health care. Yet a medical staff committed to excellence is the single-most important part of our mission. Nowhere is this commitment more visible than in Dr. Jim Mowry and Dr. Bob Watkins, board-certified orthopedic surgeons. On pages 6 and 7, you can read about their outstanding dedication to providing trauma services to our community. The Washington Rural Health Association recently recognized the physicians’ efforts, naming them 2010 Outstanding Rural Health Practitioners. The Downtown Health Center is built for efficiency and quality care. Family Medicine of Port Angeles Takes It Downtown F amily Medicine of Port Angeles (FMPA) has moved to the new Downtown Health Center, located at 240 West Front Street in Port Angeles. FMPA is a private-practice primary care clinic separate from Olympic Medical Center, but Olympic Medical leases a portion of the building to provide X-ray, physical therapy and diabetes education services. FMPA physicians designed the Downtown Health Center specifically to allow more efficient patient care. The clinic is environmentally friendly and cost-effective, and it utilizes an old City of Port Angeles storage facility that had been unused for several years. Olympic Medical’s Involvement Olympic Medical is pleased to offer X-ray, physical therapy and diabetes education in the Downtown Health Center. A person need not be an FMPA patient to utilize the services. In addition, due to the importance of making primary care available in Clallam County, Olympic Medical supported FMPA in making its move. “We are incredibly supportive by doing what we can to ensure Clallam County residents have access to family medicine,” says Eric Lewis, chief executive officer, Olympic Medical. “FMPA is taking the lead not only in our community, but in the country, by creating new ways to provide efficient and effective primary care.” Help for Haiti After recognizing the medical need of people injured after the earthquake in Haiti in early 2010, local orthopaedic surgeon Margaret Baker, MD, spearheaded the effort to collect medical supplies from the local health care community. Other participants included Olympic Medical Center’s surgical services department, Dr. Peter Lewis, Dr. Robert Scott, Jamestown Health Clinic, Fricks Pharmacy and the local chapter of the American Red Cross. Together they gathered and shipped three full pallets worth of medical supplies, prosthetics, vitamins and medications. Puget Sound Transfer provided a significant discount on the shipment of the items to the heart of the relief effort in Miami, Florida. The OMC Foundation paid the balance of shipping costs.
