Dear Friends,
This past year has been an
important one for Olympic
Medical Center. In 2008, the more
than 1,000 employees at Olympic
Medical Center continued their
focus on our mission of “Working
together to provide excellence
in health care.” The year also
brought with it our ongoing
work toward quality, and found

We would like to personally thank the community for the ongoing
support through the years, especially in regard to the tax levy voters
supported this past August. Using the funds provided through the levy,
Olympic Medical is placing emphasis on upgrading and expanding the
emergency department, birth center and inpatient hospital services,
as well as recruiting needed physicians. In addition, the funds will
be used for wellness and chronic disease management services and
providing care to uninsured residents of Clallam County.
Community support is demonstrated in many ways, including
assistance from the Olympic Medical Center Foundation. Please accept
our sincere gratitude for all the work and funds raised through special
annual events and campaigns. Our donors are incredibly important to
us, and a donor list is included in this issue.
One of Olympic Medical’s guiding principles remains caring for all
members in the community. It is our goal during the next year and
beyond to further strengthen our partnership with you by expanding
services and extending community outreach, including promoting fit
lifestyles and healthy activities.

Free Clinics Work to Fill the Need for Medical Care
Dungeness Valley Health and Wellness Clinic volunteer Karen Epler, RN, works
closely with patients such as Greg Bland in managing chronic disease and providing
preventive health care services.
Volunteers in Medicine of the
Olympics (VIMO) in Port Angeles
and the Dungeness Valley Health
and Wellness Clinic (DVHWC) in
Sequim are continuing to provide
vital primary care services to the
uninsured and underinsured of
Clallam County. Olympic Medical
Center supports both clinics through
in-kind lab and X-ray services –
approximately $96,000 total – as well
as by leasing clinic space to each for
$1 per year.
VIMO
In 2008, VIMO provided medical
care to 750 patients for a total of
2,250 visits. The services
included acute care, chronic
disease management and
mental health services. Of these
750 patients, 84 percent were
uninsured. Fifty-three percent
of those were employed and 11
percent were homeless.
VIMO is located at 909 East
Georgiana Street in Port Angeles,
and it is open from noon to 5 p.m.
Mondays and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Thursdays. A behavioral health
clinic is open on Fridays and the
second and fourth Saturdays of
each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Olympic Medical Center Commissioners Gary R. Smith, Cindy Witham and Jim
Leskinovitch spearheaded the effort to make the VA Clinic a reality in the spring of
2007. The VA Clinic – located at 1005 Georgiana Street in Port Angeles –
experienced 3,954 patient visits in 2008, providing a very valuable service for veterans
in Clallam County.
Dungeness Valley Health
and Wellness Clinic
DVHWC offers a primary care
clinic, a chronic health care clinic
and wellness education. Other
services include prescription
assistance and specialty, dental and
behavioral health referrals. DVHWC
recorded 1,172 patient visits in 2008.
The most exciting news for the free
clinic is its move into a space at the
Sequim Medical Plaza, allowing for
much-needed clinical space and
access to other medical services such
as lab work and imaging.
Dungeness Valley Health and
Wellness Clinic is located at the
Sequim Medical Plaza at 777
North Fifth Ave. in Sequim, and it
has drop-in clinic hours Mondays
and Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m.
and a chronic health care clinic by
appointment on Tuesdays.
Employees Raise More Than
$127,000 for United Way
Olympic Medical Center employees
continue to make a big difference in the
community, collectively raising more than
$127,000 for the United Way and internal
Olympic Medical charities in 2008.
“We consider this a very successful
fundraising campaign on behalf of Olympic
Medical Center employees,” says Eric Lewis,
administrator and co-chair of the medical
center’s combined fund drive committee.
“Our employees have shown tremendous
support for the United Way, raising more
than $360,000 in the last three years alone.”
Lewis, along with Bobby Beeman,
marketing and public relations coordinator,
co-chaired the 2008 fund drive with
significant participation of fellow
employees Jeff Anderson, Heather Delplain,
Pamela Hawney, Stacie Neff, Sally Rowland,
Sandy Smith and Lorraine Wall.

Olympic Medical Center’s mission to provide excellence in health care is the guiding principle in everything
we do. We are committed to our community, and we are driven to offer compassionate, high-quality
medical services. As part of our annual Community Benefit Report, we present the details of our five
recent, most notable developments, and future plans.

the emergency department to quickly access diagnostic imaging results, allowing for a
quicker diagnosis and improved quality of care for patients who come to the ED.

Qualis Health, a prominent
Medicare health care reviewing
organization, recently ranked Olympic
Medical’s results on Medicare core
quality measures among the best
scores statewide for treatment of heart
attack, heart failure and pneumonia.
“This ranking shows that the medical
professionals and staff at Olympic
Medical are focused on providing the
highest quality of care,” says Eric
Lewis, administrator of Olympic
Medical Center. “We believe that in
order to provide outstanding service,
we must strive for excellence daily and
always try to improve.”
Olympic Medical, for the fourth
quarter of 2007, met 100 percent of
the standards measured by Qualis
Health to attain these quality results.
The June 2008 report places Olympic
Medical ahead of 30 Washington State
hospitals, including those in Seattle.

Essential to the Patient
Experience
At Olympic Medical, we feel our job
is incomplete unless our patients are
content with their experiences. This
is why we place emphasis on patient
satisfaction scores. By studying these,
we can see what is most important to
patients and amend our services to
cater to those needs.
Press Ganey, a leader in patient
satisfaction surveys, ranked Olympic
Medical in the 95th percentile in its
recent study.
“Every employee at Olympic Medical
is committed to the essentials of
customer service,” says Gary R. Smith,
2008 chair of the Olympic Medical
Center Board of Commissioners. “This
commitment is evident at all levels of
our organization.”
For years, Olympic Medical has
been providing its staff with an
in-house Service Excellence training
program. Our employees are trained in
a customer service program targeted
specifically at patients. The aim
of Service Excellence is to train all
Olympic Medical employees from the
patient’s point of view to ensure the
individual is never overlooked.
3 | Your Hospital, Your
Health Care
On August 19, 2008, Clallam County
voters showed their dedication to
quality health care by approving a
tax levy increase to support Olympic
Medical. The revenue from the
increase will allow Olympic Medical to

upgrade existing services, maintain a
highly qualified workforce and provide
care for those in our community who
may not have insurance or the ability
to pay.
“We want to say ‘thank you’ to the
community for their trust,” says Lewis.
“The affirmative vote gives us the ability
to provide great care, and it shows that
our neighbors put a premium on a high
quality of life.”
The initial distribution of funds will
be wide-ranging, from improvements
in the emergency department and
hospital services to the acquisition
of leading-edge technology and
physician recruitment.
“Given our pledge to provide the
best care for our community, we have
to go after the best and brightest
doctors available,” says Smith. “To
attract those physicians, we must have
a top-tier facility outfitted with the
best medical equipment. That way,
our friends and neighbors won’t have
to drive almost 100 miles to Seattle for
certain services.”

Olympic Medical refuses to rest on
its many accomplishments. Given the
immense demonstration of trust by
the community recently, we have
developed an ambitious three-year
strategic plan aimed at improving
system-wide service.
“After much thought and
consideration we felt confident that the
52 goals laid out in the strategic plan
will result in a medical center that is
undeniably one of the nation’s best,”
says Smith. “Many of the items will
transpire in 2009, although financial
realities and other constraints make
it impossible to tackle everything at
once.”
The plan’s goals are broken into
three main priority areas:
• Quality, patient safety
and satisfaction
• OMC and community relationships
• Organizational performance
“In 2009, we will have a continued
focus on quality measures and patient
satisfaction with an added emphasis
on physician recruiting,” says Lewis.
In addition to receiving soothing healing inside Olympic Medical Center, patients are treated
to relaxing views outside, as healing involves both advanced medicine and a centered mind.
“We also want to put additional focus
on strengthening bonds with the
community. They have given us so
much, and we want to show them that
we are here for them.”
5 | Rallying for Reform
Olympic Medical continues to be
a vigorous advocate for health care
reform. Since a sizeable portion of
the American population is either
uninsured or underinsured, and
with medical expenses constantly
ballooning, it’s obvious that there is
much room for improvement within
the health care system.
“It’s staggering to look at the
numbers,” says Smith. “The United
States pays over $7,000 per year per
person for health services. Yet, when
you look at quality, the U.S. ranks 37th
in the international community. While
there is no perfect system, there are
some better ones whose principles we
could borrow.”
Representatives from Olympic
Medical continually lobby state and
federal lawmakers to help remedy the
flawed system.
“The crisis will not get any better
unless something is done soon,” says
Smith. “As it stands, our current system
is not sustainable, and we want to be
part of the solution.”
One such measure being taken
at Olympic Medical is the planned
implementation of an electronic
medical records system, providing
medical caregivers improved access
to a patient’s health records to
enhance care. Olympic Medical’s
foresight falls in line with the recent
federally proposed health care
initiative to computerize the nation’s
medical records.

Good friends are precious commodities, and at Olympic Medical Center and our Foundation, we feel like
we’ve hit the jackpot. Generous time from volunteers and money from donors have helped to make
Olympic Medical the leading-edge facility you turn to for health care.

demonstrated their generosity through
gifts of money and service. If you’re
considering doing some good for your
community this year, read on to learn
about the exciting volunteer opportunities
and events available each year through the
Olympic Medical Center Foundation.
Volunteer Pat Fitzpatrick is one of the many dedicated members of the extended Olympic
Medical Center team. Volunteers are integral to Olympic Medical, and they can be
found working throughout the medical center.
Dedicated Volunteers
Volunteers are an integral part
of Olympic Medical, providing
much-needed assistance in a variety
of locations, including the lobby
information desk and gift shop at
the hospital.
“When volunteers fill out an
application, they’re asked to list
their available hours and to choose a
department that seems best suited for
them,” says Sandra Dodge, volunteer
coordinator at Olympic Medical. “We
want to build long-term relationships
with our volunteers, so we do our best to
place them in departments in which they
can utilize their unique skills.”
Volunteers also are lending a helping
hand to one of the medical center’s
newest programs: pet therapy. On
Christmas Day 2008, specially trained
dogs – handled by volunteers – brought
comfort and joy to patients in the
medical-surgical unit. Volunteers will
continue to be involved with pet therapy
during future visits.
“Volunteers are vitally important to Olympic Medical Center. They help in a number of different fields,
always going about their business with kindness and compassion.
We’re very grateful to count such caring individuals as friends of Olympic Medical.”

Committed Organizations
The Olympic Medical Center
Auxiliary and the Sequim-Dungeness
Hospital Guild each have a long
history of generous support of the
medical center.
Most Olympic Medical Center
Auxiliary members volunteer regularly
at the hospital, with the 58 active
members donating 7,000 hours of
service per year. The auxiliary donated
more than $20,000 to Olympic Medical
in 2008 thanks to purchases made in
the gift shop and funds raised at annual
events. Some of those funds were
used to purchase respiratory hygiene
stations for the entrances and medical
equipment to be used for trauma cases
in the emergency department.
The Sequim-Dungeness Hospital
Guild has been giving to Olympic
Medical since 1970, largely from
funds raised through its thrift shop
in Sequim. Eighty-six members
volunteer in the shop, and in 2008, the
guild donated more than $23,000 for
equipment such as heart rate monitors
and infusion chairs.
Team OMC
Volunteering at the medical center
itself isn’t the only way to give back
to Olympic Medical. Each year, the
Olympic Medical Center Foundation
hosts several unique events to
raise funds for needed services and
equipment. In addition to attending
these exciting events as a guest,
you can be a part of the fun by
volunteering behind the scenes to
help put on the event.
Team OMC members, including Robert and
Sharon Stevenson, traveled to San Antonio,
Texas, to raise much-needed funds for
Olympic Medical Center.
Team OMC challenges participants
to get their hearts pumping and raise
money for the Olympic Medical cardiac
services department and Olympic
Medical Cancer Center. Individuals
who sign up commit to participating
in a half marathon or full marathon
and raise between $1,000 and $3,000.
Team members receive training in both
the athletic and fundraising aspects
of the event, and if they meet their
dollar goals, the Foundation pays their
expenses to travel to the race.
“Last year’s race was in San Antonio,
Texas,” says Bruce Skinner, executive
director of the Foundation. “It means a
lot to the participants – some of whom
are cancer survivors themselves – to be
running for such a good cause.”
Red, Set, Go! Heart Lunch
This inaugural event took place on
February 29, 2008, to kick off Olympic
Medical’s three-year campaign to raise
awareness about women’s heart health
and to raise funds for the cardiac
services department. Two hundred
women were treated to a heart-healthy
menu and a keynote speech by
Rosemary Peterson, MD, boardcertified
cardiologist with Cardiac
Health Specialists in Tacoma.
“The educational luncheon was
a great success,” says Sara Maloney,
associate executive director of the
Foundation. “We raised more than
$30,000 to purchase ambulatory
monitors and instructional DVDs
for patients in our pulmonary
rehabilitation program.”
Duck Derby
The 19th Annual Great Olympic
Peninsula Duck Derby on May 18 was
the event’s largest race ever, with more
than 36,000 rubber ducks splashing
down in Port Angeles canal waters. The
$5 a-piece ducks were sold to more than
10,000 individuals, and the owner of
the winning waterfowl received a
Toyota truck.

winner beat more than 36,000 rubber ducks to
take home a brand new Toyota truck.
held at the SunLand Golf & Country Club
on October 11, 2008, were treated to a
sumptuous, Tuscan-themed meal by
chef Steve Little of Dockside Grill on
Sequim Bay. Guests also sipped vintages
from eastern Washington’s Barnard
Griffin Winery.
The event, which included a live
auction, raised an unprecedented
$130,000 for Olympic Medical
Cancer Center.
Festival of Trees
The annual Festival of Trees was held
November 28 to 30 at the Vern Burton
Community Center in Port Angeles,
kicking off the holiday season with
three days of great events. This annual
celebration has provided funding
for Olympic Medical for almost two
decades. In addition to the Teddy Bear
Tea for children and the Holiday Senior
Breakfast for adults, more than 40 trees
designed by local artists were auctioned
at the event and raised $105,000.
