2008 Community Benefit Report<br />
A Year <strong>in</strong> Review—<br />
improv<strong>in</strong>g for you<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center’s mission <strong>to</strong> provide excellence <strong>in</strong> health care is the guid<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>in</strong> everyth<strong>in</strong>g<br />
we do. We are committed <strong>to</strong> our community, and we are driven <strong>to</strong> offer compassionate, high-quality<br />
medical services. As part of our annual Community Benefit Report, we present the details of our five<br />
recent, most notable developments, and future plans.<br />
Emergency Physician Bradley Br<strong>in</strong>ggold, MD, demonstrates <strong>to</strong> U.S. Sena<strong>to</strong>r Patty<br />
Murray how the picture archiv<strong>in</strong>g communication system (PACS) allows physicians <strong>in</strong><br />
the emergency department <strong>to</strong> quickly access diagnostic imag<strong>in</strong>g results, allow<strong>in</strong>g for a<br />
quicker diagnosis and improved quality of care for patients who come <strong>to</strong> the ED.<br />

Wash<strong>in</strong>g<strong>to</strong>n State<br />
Qualis <strong>Health</strong>, a prom<strong>in</strong>ent<br />
Medicare health care review<strong>in</strong>g<br />
organization, recently ranked <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong>’s results on Medicare core<br />
quality measures among the best<br />
scores statewide for treatment of heart<br />
attack, heart failure and pneumonia.<br />
“This rank<strong>in</strong>g shows that the medical<br />
professionals and staff at <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> are focused on provid<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
highest quality of care,” says Eric<br />
Lewis, adm<strong>in</strong>istra<strong>to</strong>r of <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> Center. “We believe that <strong>in</strong><br />
order <strong>to</strong> provide outstand<strong>in</strong>g service,<br />
we must strive for excellence daily and<br />
always try <strong>to</strong> improve.”<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>, for the fourth<br />
quarter of 2007, met 100 percent of<br />
the standards measured by Qualis<br />
<strong>Health</strong> <strong>to</strong> atta<strong>in</strong> these quality results.<br />
The June 2008 report places <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> ahead of 30 Wash<strong>in</strong>g<strong>to</strong>n State<br />
hospitals, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g those <strong>in</strong> Seattle.<br />
2 | Compassionate <strong>Care</strong><br />
Essential <strong>to</strong> the Patient<br />
Experience<br />
At <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>, we feel our job<br />
is <strong>in</strong>complete unless our patients are<br />
content with their experiences. This<br />
is why we place emphasis on patient<br />
satisfaction scores. By study<strong>in</strong>g these,<br />
we can see what is most important <strong>to</strong><br />
patients and amend our services <strong>to</strong><br />
cater <strong>to</strong> those needs.<br />
Press Ganey, a leader <strong>in</strong> patient<br />
satisfaction surveys, ranked <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> <strong>in</strong> the 95th percentile <strong>in</strong> its<br />
recent study.<br />
“Every employee at <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><br />
is committed <strong>to</strong> the essentials of<br />
cus<strong>to</strong>mer service,” says Gary R. Smith,<br />
2008 chair of the <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><br />
Center Board of Commissioners. “This<br />
commitment is evident at all levels of<br />
our organization.”<br />
For years, <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> has<br />
been provid<strong>in</strong>g its staff with an<br />
<strong>in</strong>-house Service <strong>Excellence</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
program. <strong>Our</strong> employees are tra<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong><br />
a cus<strong>to</strong>mer service program targeted<br />
specifically at patients. The aim<br />
of Service <strong>Excellence</strong> is <strong>to</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> all<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> employees from the<br />
patient’s po<strong>in</strong>t of view <strong>to</strong> ensure the<br />
<strong>in</strong>dividual is never overlooked.<br />
3 | Your Hospital, Your<br />
<strong>Health</strong> <strong>Care</strong><br />
On August 19, 2008, Clallam County<br />
voters showed their dedication <strong>to</strong><br />
quality health care by approv<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
tax levy <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>to</strong> support <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong>. The revenue from the<br />
<strong>in</strong>crease will allow <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>to</strong><br />
4 www.olympicmedical.org
upgrade exist<strong>in</strong>g services, ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> a<br />
highly qualified workforce and provide<br />
care for those <strong>in</strong> our community who<br />
may not have <strong>in</strong>surance or the ability<br />
<strong>to</strong> pay.<br />
“We want <strong>to</strong> say ‘thank you’ <strong>to</strong> the<br />
community for their trust,” says Lewis.<br />
“The affirmative vote gives us the ability<br />
<strong>to</strong> provide great care, and it shows that<br />
our neighbors put a premium on a high<br />
quality of life.”<br />
The <strong>in</strong>itial distribution of funds will<br />
be wide-rang<strong>in</strong>g, from improvements<br />
<strong>in</strong> the emergency department and<br />
hospital services <strong>to</strong> the acquisition<br />
of lead<strong>in</strong>g-edge technology and<br />
physician recruitment.<br />
“Given our pledge <strong>to</strong> provide the<br />
best care for our community, we have<br />
<strong>to</strong> go after the best and brightest<br />
doc<strong>to</strong>rs available,” says Smith. “To<br />
attract those physicians, we must have<br />
a <strong>to</strong>p-tier facility outfitted with the<br />
best medical equipment. That way,<br />
our friends and neighbors won’t have<br />
<strong>to</strong> drive almost 100 miles <strong>to</strong> Seattle for<br />
certa<strong>in</strong> services.”<br />
4 | <strong>Our</strong> <strong>Path</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Provid<strong>in</strong>g</strong><br />
<strong>Excellence</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Health</strong> <strong>Care</strong><br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> refuses <strong>to</strong> rest on<br />
its many accomplishments. Given the<br />
immense demonstration of trust by<br />
the community recently, we have<br />
developed an ambitious three-year<br />
strategic plan aimed at improv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
system-wide service.<br />
“After much thought and<br />
consideration we felt confident that the<br />
52 goals laid out <strong>in</strong> the strategic plan<br />
will result <strong>in</strong> a medical center that is<br />
undeniably one of the nation’s best,”<br />
says Smith. “Many of the items will<br />
transpire <strong>in</strong> 2009, although f<strong>in</strong>ancial<br />
realities and other constra<strong>in</strong>ts make<br />
it impossible <strong>to</strong> tackle everyth<strong>in</strong>g at<br />
once.”<br />
The plan’s goals are broken <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong><br />
three ma<strong>in</strong> priority areas:<br />
• Quality, patient safety<br />
and satisfaction<br />
• OMC and community relationships<br />
• Organizational performance<br />
“In 2009, we will have a cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />
focus on quality measures and patient<br />
satisfaction with an added emphasis<br />
on physician recruit<strong>in</strong>g,” says Lewis.<br />
In addition <strong>to</strong> receiv<strong>in</strong>g sooth<strong>in</strong>g heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>side <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center, patients are treated<br />
<strong>to</strong> relax<strong>in</strong>g views outside, as heal<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>volves both advanced medic<strong>in</strong>e and a centered m<strong>in</strong>d.<br />
“We also want <strong>to</strong> put additional focus<br />
on strengthen<strong>in</strong>g bonds with the<br />
community. They have given us so<br />
much, and we want <strong>to</strong> show them that<br />
we are here for them.”<br />
5 | Rally<strong>in</strong>g for Reform<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ues <strong>to</strong> be<br />
a vigorous advocate for health care<br />
reform. S<strong>in</strong>ce a sizeable portion of<br />
the American population is either<br />
un<strong>in</strong>sured or under<strong>in</strong>sured, and<br />
with medical expenses constantly<br />
balloon<strong>in</strong>g, it’s obvious that there is<br />
much room for improvement with<strong>in</strong><br />
the health care system.<br />
“It’s stagger<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> look at the<br />
numbers,” says Smith. “The United<br />
States pays over $7,000 per year per<br />
person for health services. Yet, when<br />
you look at quality, the U.S. ranks 37th<br />
<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational community. While<br />
there is no perfect system, there are<br />
some better ones whose pr<strong>in</strong>ciples we<br />
could borrow.”<br />
Representatives from <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ually lobby state and<br />
federal lawmakers <strong>to</strong> help remedy the<br />
flawed system.<br />
“The crisis will not get any better<br />
unless someth<strong>in</strong>g is done soon,” says<br />
Smith. “As it stands, our current system<br />
is not susta<strong>in</strong>able, and we want <strong>to</strong> be<br />
part of the solution.”<br />
One such measure be<strong>in</strong>g taken<br />
at <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> is the planned<br />
implementation of an electronic<br />
medical records system, provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
medical caregivers improved access<br />
<strong>to</strong> a patient’s health records <strong>to</strong><br />
enhance care. <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>’s<br />
foresight falls <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with the recent<br />
federally proposed health care<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiative <strong>to</strong> computerize the nation’s<br />
medical records.<br />

we at <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> are do<strong>in</strong>g<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g possible <strong>to</strong> tend <strong>to</strong> your<br />
present and future health. We are<br />
grateful <strong>to</strong> our community for<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ued support and pledge that<br />
we will constantly strive <strong>to</strong> provide<br />

2008 Community Benefit Report<br />
Giv<strong>in</strong>g Back<br />
EACH YEAR<br />
Good friends are precious commodities, and at <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center and our Foundation, we feel like<br />
we’ve hit the jackpot. Generous time from volunteers and money from donors have helped <strong>to</strong> make<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> the lead<strong>in</strong>g-edge facility you turn <strong>to</strong> for health care.<br />
2008, <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>’s many<br />
In friends and supporters – from<br />
volunteers and Team OMC members <strong>to</strong><br />
Duck Derby participants – once aga<strong>in</strong><br />
demonstrated their generosity through<br />
gifts of money and service. If you’re<br />
consider<strong>in</strong>g do<strong>in</strong>g some good for your<br />
community this year, read on <strong>to</strong> learn<br />
about the excit<strong>in</strong>g volunteer opportunities<br />
and events available each year through the<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center Foundation.<br />
Volunteer Pat Fitzpatrick is one of the many dedicated members of the extended <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> Center team. Volunteers are <strong>in</strong>tegral <strong>to</strong> <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>, and they can be<br />
found work<strong>in</strong>g throughout the medical center.<br />
Dedicated Volunteers<br />
Volunteers are an <strong>in</strong>tegral part<br />
of <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>, provid<strong>in</strong>g<br />
much-needed assistance <strong>in</strong> a variety<br />
of locations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the lobby<br />
<strong>in</strong>formation desk and gift shop at<br />
the hospital.<br />
“When volunteers fill out an<br />
application, they’re asked <strong>to</strong> list<br />
their available hours and <strong>to</strong> choose a<br />
department that seems best suited for<br />
them,” says Sandra Dodge, volunteer<br />
coord<strong>in</strong>a<strong>to</strong>r at <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>. “We<br />
want <strong>to</strong> build long-term relationships<br />
with our volunteers, so we do our best <strong>to</strong><br />
place them <strong>in</strong> departments <strong>in</strong> which they<br />
can utilize their unique skills.”<br />
Volunteers also are lend<strong>in</strong>g a help<strong>in</strong>g<br />
hand <strong>to</strong> one of the medical center’s<br />
newest programs: pet therapy. On<br />
Christmas Day 2008, specially tra<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
dogs – handled by volunteers – brought<br />
comfort and joy <strong>to</strong> patients <strong>in</strong> the<br />
medical-surgical unit. Volunteers will<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong>volved with pet therapy<br />
dur<strong>in</strong>g future visits.<br />
“Volunteers are vitally important <strong>to</strong> <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center. They help <strong>in</strong> a number of different fields,<br />
always go<strong>in</strong>g about their bus<strong>in</strong>ess with k<strong>in</strong>dness and compassion.<br />
We’re very grateful <strong>to</strong> count such car<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dividuals as friends of <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>.”<br />

Committed Organizations<br />
The <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center<br />
Auxiliary and the Sequim-Dungeness<br />
Hospital Guild each have a long<br />
his<strong>to</strong>ry of generous support of the<br />
medical center.<br />
Most <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center<br />
Auxiliary members volunteer regularly<br />
at the hospital, with the 58 active<br />
members donat<strong>in</strong>g 7,000 hours of<br />
service per year. The auxiliary donated<br />
more than $20,000 <strong>to</strong> <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><br />
<strong>in</strong> 2008 thanks <strong>to</strong> purchases made <strong>in</strong><br />
the gift shop and funds raised at annual<br />
events. Some of those funds were<br />
used <strong>to</strong> purchase respira<strong>to</strong>ry hygiene<br />
stations for the entrances and medical<br />
equipment <strong>to</strong> be used for trauma cases<br />
<strong>in</strong> the emergency department.<br />
The Sequim-Dungeness Hospital<br />
Guild has been giv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> s<strong>in</strong>ce 1970, largely from<br />
funds raised through its thrift shop<br />
<strong>in</strong> Sequim. Eighty-six members<br />
volunteer <strong>in</strong> the shop, and <strong>in</strong> 2008, the<br />
guild donated more than $23,000 for<br />
equipment such as heart rate moni<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
and <strong>in</strong>fusion chairs.<br />
Team OMC<br />
Volunteer<strong>in</strong>g at the medical center<br />
itself isn’t the only way <strong>to</strong> give back<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong>. Each year, the<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center Foundation<br />
hosts several unique events <strong>to</strong><br />
raise funds for needed services and<br />
equipment. In addition <strong>to</strong> attend<strong>in</strong>g<br />
these excit<strong>in</strong>g events as a guest,<br />
you can be a part of the fun by<br />
volunteer<strong>in</strong>g beh<strong>in</strong>d the scenes <strong>to</strong><br />
help put on the event.<br />
Team OMC members, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Robert and<br />
Sharon Stevenson, traveled <strong>to</strong> San An<strong>to</strong>nio,<br />
Texas, <strong>to</strong> raise much-needed funds for<br />
<strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Center.<br />
Team OMC challenges participants<br />
<strong>to</strong> get their hearts pump<strong>in</strong>g and raise<br />
money for the <strong>Olympic</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> cardiac<br />
services department and <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong> Cancer Center. Individuals<br />
who sign up commit <strong>to</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> a half marathon or full marathon<br />
and raise between $1,000 and $3,000.<br />
Team members receive tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> both<br />
the athletic and fundrais<strong>in</strong>g aspects<br />
of the event, and if they meet their<br />
dollar goals, the Foundation pays their<br />
expenses <strong>to</strong> travel <strong>to</strong> the race.<br />
“Last year’s race was <strong>in</strong> San An<strong>to</strong>nio,<br />
Texas,” says Bruce Sk<strong>in</strong>ner, executive<br />
direc<strong>to</strong>r of the Foundation. “It means a<br />
lot <strong>to</strong> the participants – some of whom<br />
are cancer survivors themselves – <strong>to</strong> be<br />
runn<strong>in</strong>g for such a good cause.”<br />
Red, Set, Go! Heart Lunch<br />
This <strong>in</strong>augural event <strong>to</strong>ok place on<br />
February 29, 2008, <strong>to</strong> kick off <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
<strong>Medical</strong>’s three-year campaign <strong>to</strong> raise<br />
awareness about women’s heart health<br />
and <strong>to</strong> raise funds for the cardiac<br />
services department. Two hundred<br />
women were treated <strong>to</strong> a heart-healthy<br />
menu and a keynote speech by<br />
Rosemary Peterson, MD, boardcertified<br />
cardiologist with Cardiac<br />
<strong>Health</strong> Specialists <strong>in</strong> Tacoma.<br />
“The educational luncheon was<br />
a great success,” says Sara Maloney,<br />
associate executive direc<strong>to</strong>r of the<br />
Foundation. “We raised more than<br />
$30,000 <strong>to</strong> purchase ambula<strong>to</strong>ry<br />
moni<strong>to</strong>rs and <strong>in</strong>structional DVDs<br />
for patients <strong>in</strong> our pulmonary<br />
rehabilitation program.”<br />
Duck Derby<br />
The 19th Annual Great <strong>Olympic</strong><br />
Pen<strong>in</strong>sula Duck Derby on May 18 was<br />
the event’s largest race ever, with more<br />
than 36,000 rubber ducks splash<strong>in</strong>g<br />
down <strong>in</strong> Port Angeles canal waters. The<br />
$5 a-piece ducks were sold <strong>to</strong> more than<br />
10,000 <strong>in</strong>dividuals, and the owner of<br />
the w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g waterfowl received a<br />
Toyota truck.<br />

decades. In addition <strong>to</strong> the Teddy Bear<br />
Tea for children and the Holiday Senior<br />
Breakfast for adults, more than 40 trees<br />
designed by local artists were auctioned<br />
