Super 16mm Camera Film Portfolio Changes
Today, a renaissance in the use of Super 16 is being driven in part by the advances in film, lens and camera
technologies. Furthermore, recent developments in digital film mastering technology provide filmmakers who
choose to work in the Super 16 format with an affordable and practical ways to produce their products for
distribution.
The introduction of the “new generation” Kodak VISION2 film 7218 promises to boost the trend toward Super 16
format productions. The 500-speed film offers a noticeably finer-grain structure than other high-speed stocks.
Independent features are just part of a larger shift. Increasing numbers of narrative television shows and
documentaries are being produced in Super 16 mm format as an alternative to digital video.
Kodak is committed to providing the tools that filmmakers need to be just that: filmmakers. And we’re committed
to listening to our customers. Several programs have been developed to support Super 16 including:
• Events—Kodak-hosted events around the country to discuss Super 16 productions with filmmakers
working in the field.
• “Reel Talk” Online Chats—Log on to ask questions and get answers from venerable filmmakers about
their experiences shooting on film.
• Website Resource—A Kodak website dedicated to Super 16 mm production that includes information on
products, articles about users, frequently asked questions, and archived “Reel Talk” chat transcripts.
• Demonstrations—See a Super 16 mm demo with side-by-side comparisons to electronic capture.
• DVD—Hear television producers and cinematographers from around the world talk about film—both
Super 16 mm and 35 mm—and why it works for them.
• Articles—Look for great articles in In Camera highlighting who is using Super 16, their experiences and
reasons for their decisions.
Call your local sales rep for more information or to learn more about Kodak’s outreach programs outlined above.
In addition to these programs, Kodak is announcing, effective July 1, 2003, that the majority of 16 mm
camera films (acetate base) will only be stocked as single perforation products. This conversion of the
Kodak product portfolio is being done in full support of the Super 16mm renaissance described above.
For most product codes and film lengths, the catalog number for the double perforation film will be
discontinued and a single perforation catalog number made available to satisfy customer demand.
Exceptions to this policy include all high-speed camera needs and specialized customer requirements
including pin-registered animation. Any remaining inventory for the discontinued 16 mm double
perforation camera films will be available for sales until the inventory is depleted (expected 4Q 2003).
