Wyn Geleynse
Canadian artist, born in 1947 in Netherlands, lives and works in London, Ontario, Canada.
Since 25 years, Wyn Geleynse widens his artistic
renown with an installation practice that borrows
from cinema, photography, video and sculpture. Based
on both image and object, his hybrid practice
develops a specific world, halfway between childhood
wonders and adult worries. The artist often plays his
own fragile characters, in a clumsy way that rouses
embarrassment, reinforced by his systematic use of
video loops, as signs of the human conditioned by allover-agains.
“In Just… (2002), Geleynse endlessly regurgitates
wooden alphabet blocks, and yet no words form, no
final meaning appears: there is always another block,
another letter, another grimace on the way. As the
child is father to the man, so too do the wooden
building blocks of childhood remain inside the adult.
The child’s involuntary initiation into the realm of
language, culture, gender, returns with the vengeance

“ The City Services Trucks are intended to provide
solace or succor for the populace. Meant to drive
through the city offering a moment of assurance
and comfort to an increasingly nervous population.
Initially intended as a tongue in cheek stab at public
anxiety. The work once realized in maquette form
took on an unexpected poignancy because of the
actor/songwriter Brenda MacMorrow’s
performance for the video. Her maternal
performance is projected outward from the screen
with conviction and humor, making the character
and message believable, lovable and welcome
within our urban environment.” (Wyn Geleynse)
With issues like identity, melancholy,
disillusionment, or the difficulty of communication,
Wyn Geleynse achieves a sweet-and-sour
questioning of the self.
