The Dominican Sisters of Peace is a congregation formed on Easter Sunday 2009 

from the union of seven former congregations of Dominican Sisters: 

• Congregation of St. Rose of Lima (Oxford, Michigan) 

• Dominican Sisters, Congregation of St. Mary (New Orleans, Louisiana) 

• Dominican Sisters, St. Mary of the Springs (Columbus, Ohio) 

• Dominican Sisters of Great Bend, Kansas 

• Dominicans of St. Catharine (St. Catharine, Kentucky) 

• Eucharistic Missionaries of St. Dominic (New Orleans, Louisiana) 

• Sisters of St. Dominic of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (Akron, Ohio) 

A pontifical institute, the Dominican Sisters of Peace congregation shares a common embrace 

of Dominican life and its mission which unites us to each other and to the work of Jesus 

Christ. We are Dominican Sisters whose mission, or “charism,” of preaching flows from our 

contemplation, study, and community. We are more than 600 Sisters and 500 Associates who 

live and minister in 28 States and in Honduras, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, and Vietnam. 

We are committed to greater involvement in the global community, simplicity of life, and itinerancy. 

Our diverse ministries include education, health care, social work, spiritual direction, 

and parish-based ministries among others. We serve in universities and colleges, high schools, 

elementary schools, literacy centers, ecology and spiritual outreach centers, parishes, prisons, 

and more. We work to create environments of peace by promoting non-violence, unity in 

diversity, reconciliation, and justice through solidarity, especially for women and children.

I approach this letter with the holy season of Thanksgiving in mind. I am sure you 

share my sense that it is a sacred time, free of commercial incentives and full of spiritual 

ones. Our family and yours cherish these opportunities to gather around our tables and 

to give thanks to God who has blessed us all so generously with the priceless gifts of 

life, love, and compassion. As a congregation of Sisters who have been graced by your 

generosity, we want to assure you that we try to live out in a tangible way our gratitude 

for your gifts, a kind of “Thanks-living” that embodies in a very real way our Eucharistic 

faith. Please know that you and your loved ones are remembered at our daily Eucharistic 

table, that most sublime prayer of thanksgiving. 

Through your generosity to us, you participate with us in our mission, and this is a 

blessing for you and for us. We carry your presence, your embrace, to God’s people. Because 

of your generosity this past year we are in a position to insure that our mission of 

preaching holds pride of place in the way we live together and minister to others. Each 

day, as we go forth to our ministries of education, health care, social services, pastoral 

work, and simple presence, we extend your concern and compassion along with our 

own to those we meet. You enable these good works, our simple gifts of service, to happen. 

You will find in these pages a record of some of the milestones in our first year as the 

Dominican Sisters of Peace: profession of vows, celebrations of jubilees, some of the 

works of our Sisters in founded and supported ministries, and the deaths of members of 

the congregation – some of whom you have known well. The list of memorial tributes 

attests to the fact that you have treasured the lives of these Sisters. Their vision has 

made it possible for us to become the congregation we are today. I assure you that we 

will carry their memory with us in our journey forward, for as we say in our new Constitutions: 

“We, the Dominican Sisters of Peace, journey together inspired by the wisdom 

and faith of our founders and the courage with which they faced their future.”

Sisters’ Ministry Fund 

Enabling the Work of 16 Supported Ministries 

and 340 Sisters’ Ministries 

The founding congregations of the Dominican Sisters of Peace established more than 33 institutions that 

continue to operate today, some of which are financially independent and others of which continue to be supported 

by the Dominican Sisters of Peace. Currently, 160 Dominican Sisters of Peace and numerous Associates 

of the congregation serve in these institutions. An additional 137 Sisters serve in parish or other diocesan ministries, 

16 serve in other nonprofit organizations, 27 minister in public sector (government) positions, and one 

ministers in the private sector. Almost 300 Sisters volunteer with our own institutions and countless others. Your 

contributions to the Sisters’ Ministry Fund enable the continued ministry of our Sisters in all these areas. 

Education 

Traditionally, Dominicans have spread the Good News through education for all ages. From preschool 

children to adults, in grade schools and high schools, in colleges and universities, many students have experienced 

the Sisters’ dedication to learning and their providing hope and enlightenment through an ongoing 

pursuit of Truth.

Professor of Theology, University of Notre Dame

Sr. Mary Catherine Hilkert brings her strong 

Dominican identity to bear in her research and 

work with both undergraduate and graduate students 

as theology professor and director of the 

Master of Theological Studies program at Notre 

Dame University. Specializing in contemporary 

systematic theology, she has particular interest in 

theological anthropology, feminist theology, and 

theologies of preaching. She is currently working 

on a second book on theology and preaching titled 

Words of Spirit and Life, based on her recent 

Lyman Beecher Lectures at Yale University.

Adult Literacy 

Although the educational mission of the Dominican Sisters continues to thrive in schools and colleges, the 

Sisters have recognized a new area of concern in adult literacy. True to the Dominican spirit of adapting to 

meet the changing needs of the times, today the Sisters operate three learning centers and work in other organizations 

to address adult literacy needs of the the poor, the marginalized, and immigrant populations. 


Yvette Gioannetti, OPA 

Associate Yvette Gioannetti, 

now residing at Sansbury Care

Rachel Sena in Guatemala. 

In 1993, after fleeing that 

country, she and Sr. Rachel 

establish the Maya Ministry 

Family Literacy Program as 

a diocesan program addressing 

the literacy needs of the indigenous 

Maya immigrant 

families from Guatemala and Hispanic 

immigrants in Florida. She continues 

to act as an informal consultant for the staff from afar. 

Housing 

Affordable housing, especially for the poor, elderly, and disabled, 

continues to be an important issue facing our society. In efforts to 

provide safe, affordable alternatives for individuals in these groups, 

the Dominican Sisters of Peace sponsor two low-income housing 

units, in addition to nursing and assisted living facilities, and support 

several Sisters working in the field.

Manager of the Residences at 

Creekside senior apartments. In 

this role, she oversees the administration 

of the building and 

the needs of its residents. In everything 

from supervising maintenance to 

planning social events and other activities 

to foster community, Sr. Kathleen enjoys her myriad tasks in working with the facility’s 

elderly residents. Currently, she is overseeing the construction of a second building on 

the property, which will increase the number of apartments to 200.

Health Care & Independent Living 

Another traditional ministry of many Dominican Sisters has been in health care. Today, this traditional 

ministry has expanded to include the care of senior citizens and the disabled, offering hospitable environments 

for healing of body, mind, and spirit through a variety of ministries. 


Sr. Frances Mary Kernasovich, OP 

Pastoral Minister, Lourdes Campus 

Waterford, Michigan 

Sr. Frances Mary Kernasovich ministers to 

the sick and elderly on the Lourdes Campus in 

Waterford, Michigan. She is conscientious in 

her care of the dying and ensures that no one 

dies alone. Also, some seminarians receive their 

field education under her supervision. Her 

ministry at the various health care ministries at 

Lourdes has spanned 29 years. Prior to her 

current pastoral care ministry, where she has 

served for the past five years, she ministered as 

Administrator of Lourdes and later as CEO of 

the Campus. While in these roles, she led the 

organization through a period of expansion 

that included construction of independent 

senior housing, assisted living, and an 

Alzheimer’s and dementia unit.

Retreat/Spiritual Life 

Through various expressions of spiritual life ministry, Dominican Sisters make themselves available to 

those seeking to deepen their relationship with God and who want to expand the spiritual dimensions of 

their lives. Through pastoral ministry, chaplaincy, spiritual direction, retreat minstry, and more, Dominican 

Sisters of Peace help individuals to recognize God’s presence in their daily lives. Sisters in spiritual life ministry 

often teach methods and practices of praying. They may also plan and direct retreats, attend to individuals’ 

pastoral needs, or accompany others on their spiritual journeys in various ways.

Care of Creation 

Care of Creation is a value grounded in Catholic social teaching and embraced by the Dominican Sisters. 

Ecological issues are part of the Catholic social justice agenda, and the Sisters use the term “eco-spirituality” to 

reflect the spiritual dimension in the science of ecology. Through prayer, study, individual initiatives, and local 

eco-spirituality centers, the Dominican mission of education is now being applied to the protection of Earth’s 

resources.

Sr. Susan Morris, OP 

Concerned Citizen‐Volunteer 

South Boston, Massachusetts 

Earlier this year, Sr. Susan Morris was picking 

up litter on the sidewalks in front of the South 

Boston Community Health Center when a 

maintenance man inquired about her actions. Sr. 

Susan explained, “the Earth is gift and each of us 

has an obligation to help keep it clean.” 

The man related the incident to two directors 

at the Center who work with an enterprising 

group of young community activists called 

“Youth Ambassadors.” Inspired by Sr. Susan’s 

dedication, the group decided to initiate an antilitter 

campaign. Sr. Susan worked with the students 

to clean and beautify the thoroughfare, 

ridding it of litter and providing new flowers in 

the tree wells along the street. 

In June, the South Boston Community Health 

Center honored Sr. Susan with one of their 

“Butterfly Awards,” which celebrate the theory 

that the flutter of a butterfly’s wings in China 

could, in fact, affect weather patterns in New 

York City. The awards are given to those who 

foster, celebrate, inspire, and open doors for the 

Youth Ambassadors in South Boston.

across the US border from El Paso, Texas, to their ministry 

in a city with the highest murder rate in North America. 

The Sisters help women to grow both personally 

and spiritually through a four-year 

leadership development program. All the 

teachers and tutors are women of the colonia 

who have successfully completed the 

program. They also empower women to 

be able to take better care of their families 

financially through operating a 

sewing cooperative and a gardening cooperative. 

In addition to the programs for women, the 

organization also provides a kindergarten for 105 

children, a homework help program for 270 children, 

and a Saturday youth group for 80 teens.

Most of our Sisters remain active in ministry well past the average retirement age. Even once retired from 

full-time ministry, some Sisters take on part-time ministries or volunteer positions to continue sharing the Dominican 

Mission as they are able. Even near the end of life, most Sisters enter a ministry of prayer, interceding 

for the needs of the world, including those of the congregation and our families, friends, donors, and benefactors.

of state as needed. This year, Sr. Betty drove a great distance 

to teach an astronomy/earth science course at 

Nunez Community College in St. Bernard Parish, New 

Orleans, which was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina.

aging volunteers and is 

on the board at Crystal 

Springs Ecological

She also teaches

young women considering religious

broaden her world view by reading Muslim writers, especially 

those highlighting women’s issues, and highly recommends 

the book Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristoff.

A renewal of vows is a prophetic sign for a religious community – it is a sign 

of hope and a sign of growth. When a woman chooses to enter a religious congregation, 

she is first a candidate, then becomes a novice for two years. After 

this initial period of discernment, she may choose to profess temporary vows 

for three years to continue living out religious life and discerning her vocation. 

She can renew her temporary vows for up to three more years before deciding 

whether to make perpetual vows as a Dominican Sister of Peace. 

Young and vibrant Sr. Mary Vuong, (pictured at left with Prioress Sr. Margaret 

Ormond) renewed her temporary vows for two 

years in the Dominican Chapel of the Plains in 

Great Bend in June. She had recently moved to 

Great Bend to begin her first ministry within the newly formed Dominican 

Sisters of Peace as an occupational therapist at Central Kansas Medical 

Center. The ceremony was a joyful occasion for all! 

“It is exciting to renew my commitment with this new community at this 

particular time and place, and to be a part of the worldwide Dominican 

Family.... It is exciting, as the poet Mary Oliver says, to live out my ‘one 

wild and precious life’ with faith‐filled women who live out their dreams 

with conviction and passion.”

Dominican Sisters of Peace Financial Report July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010 

Financial donations given to the Dominican Sisters of Peace can be directed to be used in any of four 

areas: Sisters’ Ministries, Overseas Missions, Retirement, or the General Fund (to be used as needed). 

We are grateful for all contributions, which enable us to continue our mission of preaching the Gospel, 

in word and deed, to those in need. The Dominican Sisters of Peace, Inc., is a nonprofit, charitable, 

faithbased organization that is exempt from federal and state taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the 

United States Internal Revenue Code.

The National Religious Retirement Office of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops projects the unfunded obligations for the care of retired members 

of the Dominican Sisters of Peace to be $15,942,079. At this printing , the Dominican Sisters of Peace have 614 members.
