Corner<br />

Prior to launching our first Raffle SM<br />

game, the St. Patrick’s Day Raffle<br />

in January 2009, we looked<br />

closely at how other state lotteries<br />

positioned their raffle games. We<br />

applied those lessons to our own<br />

Raffle game and after careful consideration,<br />

decided that offering<br />

250,000 tickets at $10 each with<br />

a $1 million top prize would work<br />

best in <strong>Oregon</strong>.<br />

Raffle game #1 sold out in 12<br />

days, while our second offering<br />

went in 11 days. Raffle #3<br />

exhausted all 250,000 tickets in<br />

only 10 days. <strong>And</strong> the recent 4th<br />

of July Raffle saw its entire allotment<br />

of tickets get into players’<br />

hands in 14 days!<br />

With the repeated fast sell outs,<br />

many <strong>Oregon</strong>ians were waiting<br />

too long to buy tickets and were<br />

not able to get in on the Raffle<br />

fun. A recent survey on our Web<br />

site told us that 53 percent of the<br />

responding core players were not<br />

able to buy Raffle tickets before<br />

they all sold out.<br />

With that in mind, the <strong><strong>Than</strong>ksgiving</strong><br />

Raffle launching Sept. 26<br />

will be twice as big! <strong>Ever</strong>y aspect of<br />

the new <strong><strong>Than</strong>ksgiving</strong> Raffle will<br />

be doubled - 500,000 tickets, two<br />

$1 million top prizes, 20 prizes of<br />

$20,000 and 2,000 prizes of $100.<br />

The great news for your players<br />

<strong>is</strong> that the ticket cost remains the<br />

same - $10! Even though 500,000<br />

tickets will be available, don’t forget<br />

to remind your players that tickets<br />

are still limited.<br />

Successful Sales Tactics<br />

At the Beachcomber Pub in Florence<br />

The Beachcomber Pub in “Old<br />

Town” Florence, <strong>Oregon</strong>, was<br />

establ<strong>is</strong>hed in 1936. Considered to<br />

be the local hangout, th<strong>is</strong> location<br />

offers a wide variety of great food,<br />

games and excellent customer service.<br />

Scott Wa<strong>is</strong>s has owned th<strong>is</strong> location<br />

for over five and a half years. Th<strong>is</strong><br />

establ<strong>is</strong>hment offers players a wide<br />

variety of games including Scratchits<br />

SM , Video <strong>Lottery</strong> SM , Keno and draw<br />

games. They have also creatively<br />

arranged their Video <strong>Lottery</strong> terminals<br />

to attract attention, and allow<br />

plenty of room for player enjoyment.<br />

With the current state of the economy,<br />

th<strong>is</strong> location continually strives<br />

to offer something new to their<br />

customers. For over a year and a<br />

half, th<strong>is</strong> location has run a successful<br />

promotion called Keno Burger<br />

on Monday nights. Scott and h<strong>is</strong><br />

staff find that Scratch-its also provide<br />

great entertainment to customers<br />

enjoying a meal. Keeping players<br />

engaged in <strong>Lottery</strong> games ass<strong>is</strong>ts in<br />

keeping the Video <strong>Lottery</strong> area busy.<br />

The area <strong>is</strong> well-maintained by the<br />

staff, who are also very knowledgeable<br />

about the games.<br />

Scott says, “The staff always has a<br />

friendly smile and they make sure<br />

that customers receive prompt service.<br />

They always strive to learn<br />

customers’ names to give that added<br />

personal touch.” With all of these<br />

great sales techniques, it <strong>is</strong> no wonder<br />

th<strong>is</strong> location remains a favored<br />

location for both tour<strong>is</strong>ts and locals.<br />

With the addition of Mega Millions ® , drawings for big jackpots happen<br />

Retailer Survey Results<br />

<strong>Than</strong>ks to your responsiveness, the<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> ®<br />

has just completed its<br />

2010 Retailer Survey process.<br />

In March 2010, survey packets were<br />

mailed to 3,899 retailers to be completed<br />

and returned by April 5, with a new<br />

option for retailers to complete the survey<br />

on the Internet. Th<strong>is</strong> year 1,457 surveys<br />

were returned, resulting in a return<br />

rate of 37.4 percent. Th<strong>is</strong> <strong>is</strong> a slight<br />

decrease from 2009, but remains at one<br />

of its highest levels. Of all the returned<br />

surveys, 11.7 percent were completed<br />

using the Internet. Th<strong>is</strong> year was also<br />

the second year we offered an incentive<br />

of a $100 drawing for each of the six<br />

sales areas. Th<strong>is</strong> year’s six winners for<br />

the $100 drawing are:<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> Web Site<br />

A new question about Web site v<strong>is</strong>itation<br />

and player referral was also asked th<strong>is</strong> year.<br />

Twenty five percent indicated that they<br />

v<strong>is</strong>it the <strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> ® Web site, and<br />

35 percent indicated that they refer players<br />

to the <strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> Web site. Our<br />

recently redesigned Web site offers valuable<br />

information on the good things the <strong>Lottery</strong><br />

does for <strong>Oregon</strong>. Both players and retailers<br />

have access to easy-to-navigate pages for<br />

winning numbers, current jackpots, game<br />

demos, winners and information about<br />

<strong>Lottery</strong> promotions and contests. It <strong>is</strong> a<br />

good resource for you and your players.<br />

Future Online<br />

Communications<br />

Another new question was added<br />

th<strong>is</strong> year to understand retailer interest<br />

in future online communications.<br />

all retailers in early March 2011.<br />

Riverside Cleanup<br />

An <strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> ® Sponsorship Event<br />

Th<strong>is</strong> month, the <strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> ® will be<br />

a presenting sponsor of SOLV’s Beach<br />

& Riverside Cleanup, an event where<br />

volunteers gather together to clean local<br />

waterways. Th<strong>is</strong> year, over 200 project<br />

sites will be v<strong>is</strong>ited by thousands of<br />

volunteers, with the m<strong>is</strong>sion of<br />

keeping <strong>Oregon</strong> the green and<br />

clean state it <strong>is</strong> known to be.<br />

As a presenting sponsor, the<br />

<strong>Oregon</strong> <strong>Lottery</strong> will be giving<br />

away 7,000 reusable grocery<br />

bags and gloves to volunteers<br />

at the event. The event will<br />

take place on Saturday, September 25,<br />
