LABOUR FORCE<br />

<strong>Oshawa</strong> has a skilled labour force of more than 75,000 people,<br />

comprised of 55% males and 45% females. Over half of the city’s<br />

workforce has been trained at either community college or university<br />

level. The Skills Training Centre of Durham College custom designs<br />

training for employees to help business and industry meet their hiring<br />

needs and reduce payroll costs. <strong>Oshawa</strong> has a growing bilingual and<br />

multilingual labour force.<br />

EDUCATION<br />

Elementary and secondary school education is offered by both the Durham<br />

District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School Board.<br />

There are several independent schools, for example Kingsway College,<br />

which also offer private elementary and secondary school education.<br />

Post secondary education is offered at Durham College and the new<br />

University of <strong>Ontario</strong> Institute of Technology [UOIT]. As <strong>Canada</strong>’s newest<br />

university, UOIT offers a combination of academic knowledge, vibrant<br />

student life, leading-edge research and hands-on skills. Career-focused<br />

degree programs, some unique in the province, are offered together with<br />

leadership and professional development. Programs include Business and<br />

Information Technology, Education, Engineering and Applied Sciences,<br />

Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Energy and Nuclear Sciences, Advanced<br />

Manufacturing Technologies and Criminology and Justice Studies.<br />

UOIT features state-of-the-art technology that provides for a fully<br />

networked campus that allows students access via their personal laptop<br />

computers.<br />

Adult training, apprenticeship and customized corporate training programs<br />

are offered through Durham College, and in some cases financial<br />

assistance from Human Resources and Skills Development <strong>Canada</strong> is<br />

available. Training in other business, computer and secretarial skill<br />

programs are available through privately operated <strong>Oshawa</strong> businesses.<br />

HEALTH CARE<br />

Lakeridge Health <strong>Oshawa</strong> provides primary, secondary and tertiary health<br />

care services to residents of <strong>Oshawa</strong> and beyond. Several medical<br />

clinics and numerous doctors’ offices are located throughout the city.<br />

A high standard of health care is also provided through Community<br />

Health Programs and professional medical and dental services,<br />

ambulance service and care for the aged. Social service organizations<br />

provide a host of programs as well, and a number of nursing homes<br />

and retirement residences are located throughout the city.<br />

LIFESTYLE<br />

PARKS AND RECREATION<br />

<strong>Oshawa</strong> has over 1,200 acres of parkland, plus numerous other facilities<br />

such as arenas, recreation complexes, athletic fields, beaches, jogging<br />

and walking paths, playgrounds and pools. The <strong>Oshawa</strong> Trails and the<br />

9-km Waterfront Trail along Lake <strong>Ontario</strong> provide year-round activities.<br />

Five conservation areas provide picnic grounds, fitness trails and<br />

interpretive nature programs. The <strong>Oshawa</strong> Valley Botanical Garden boasts<br />

one of the largest collection of peonies in North America. In addition to<br />

the municipal facilities, <strong>Oshawa</strong> is home to the Durham Region YMCA<br />

and the privately owned ice rink complex, Ice Sports <strong>Oshawa</strong>.<br />

Starting in 2004, <strong>Oshawa</strong> will invest $70 million dollars in renovations<br />

to existing sports and recreational facilities and in constructing new<br />

state-of-the-art recreation complexes to meet the needs of the growing<br />

population.<br />

CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT<br />

A variety of organizations such as the <strong>Oshawa</strong> Folk Arts Council and<br />

the <strong>Oshawa</strong> and District Historical Society promote the arts, culture<br />

and local heritage. <strong>Oshawa</strong> boasts the:<br />

symphony orchestra and the philharmonic choir. The <strong>Oshawa</strong> Public<br />

Library offers excellent services at locations throughout the <strong>City</strong>.<br />

Numerous ethnic clubs provide cultural and language programs to the<br />

community and present an annual ethnic celebration called "Fiesta<br />

Week" every June. During the summer, concerts and theatre in the park<br />

are popular attractions, as is the annual <strong>Oshawa</strong> Jazz and Blues Festival.
