Oshawa – A great place to g LOCATION The City of Oshawa is considered the eastern gateway to the Greater Toronto Area [GTA] and is the largest urban municipality in Durham Region. OSHAWA OVERVIEW Oshawa is a city of approximately 150,000 people and is the dominant population and economic centre of the Regional Municipality of Durham. First settled as a French trading post in 1750, Oshawa grew steadily and was incorporated as a city in 1924. In 1876, Col. R. S. McLaughlin relocated the McLaughlin Carriage Company to Oshawa which became the forerunner of General Motors of Canada Limited. GM is the city’s and region’s largest employer. BUSINESS OVERVIEW Oshawa is well known as Canada’s "Automotive City" and for good reason. It is the Canadian headquarters for General Motors of Canada Limited, Autoplex and GM’s Regional Engineering Centre. The proposed extension of 407 Highway will provide an additional east – west link across Oshawa’s northern area. Rail – Via Rail Canada provides passenger services along the Windsor – Quebec City corridor. Canadian National and Canadian Pacific rail lines provide freight service and interswitching facilities on Canada’s mainline corridors from eastern Canada to southwestern Ontario, western Canada and the American mid-west. Fast and convenient commuter service to the heart of Toronto is available through GO Transit. ow a family and a business. LABOUR FORCE Oshawa has a skilled labour force of more than 75,000 people, comprised of 55% males and 45% females. Over half of the city’s workforce has been trained at either community college or university level. The Skills Training Centre of Durham College custom designs training for employees to help business and industry meet their hiring needs and reduce payroll costs. Oshawa has a growing bilingual and multilingual labour force. EDUCATION Elementary and secondary school education is offered by both the Durham District School Board and the Durham Catholic District School Board. There are several independent schools, for example Kingsway College, which also offer private elementary and secondary school education. Post secondary education is offered at Durham College and the new University of Ontario Institute of Technology [UOIT]. As Canada’s newest university, UOIT offers a combination of academic knowledge, vibrant student life, leading-edge research and hands-on skills. Career-focused degree programs, some unique in the province, are offered together with leadership and professional development. Programs include Business and Information Technology, Education, Engineering and Applied Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Energy and Nuclear Sciences, Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and Criminology and Justice Studies. UOIT features state-of-the-art technology that provides for a fully networked campus that allows students access via their personal laptop computers. Adult training, apprenticeship and customized corporate training programs are offered through Durham College, and in some cases financial assistance from Human Resources and Skills Development Canada is available. Training in other business, computer and secretarial skill programs are available through privately operated Oshawa businesses. Several medical clinics and numerous doctors’ offices are located throughout the city. A high standard of health care is also provided through Community Health Programs and professional medical and dental services, ambulance service and care for the aged. Social service organizations provide a host of programs as well, and a number of nursing homes and retirement residences are located throughout the city. LIFESTYLE PARKS AND RECREATION Oshawa has over 1,200 acres of parkland, plus numerous other facilities such as arenas, recreation complexes, athletic fields, beaches, jogging and walking paths, playgrounds and pools. The Oshawa Trails and the 9-km Waterfront Trail along Lake Ontario provide year-round activities. Five conservation areas provide picnic grounds, fitness trails and interpretive nature programs. The Oshawa Valley Botanical Garden boasts one of the largest collection of peonies in North America. In addition to the municipal facilities, Oshawa is home to the Durham Region YMCA and the privately owned ice rink complex, Ice Sports Oshawa. Starting in 2004, Oshawa will invest $70 million dollars in renovations to existing sports and recreational facilities and in constructing new state-of-the-art recreation complexes to meet the needs of the growing population. CULTURE AND ENTERTAINMENT A variety of organizations such as the Oshawa Folk Arts Council and the Oshawa and District Historical Society promote the arts, culture and local heritage. During the summer, concerts and theatre in the park are popular attractions, as is the annual Oshawa Jazz and Blues Festival.
