WITH THE HEAT
Heat-storing fireplaces made of Mammutti soapstone

A fireplace harnesses the power of fire
The fireplace was the heart of the
home
for three-year-old Juhani Lehikoinen, the
future founder of NunnaUuni. Today, many
owners of NunnaUuni fireplaces agree with
Juhani on this. The picture shows young
Juhani heating the home.
More and more people admit that they long for a simple, earnest, and stable life.
We value having a home and traditions, and we invest in our environment and
in time spent with family and friends. We are returning to our roots, and to good
experiences.
With Finnish tradition and modern skill, NunnaUuni fireplaces contribute to
good everyday living. A blazing fire gathers families together and keeps us warm in
every type of weather. Each time we light the fire, we can have a moment of quiet.
At their best, those moments create memories that become stories to remember.
A fire strengthens the flow of positive energy in the home. Soapstone represents
similar stability and continuity. The stories nature has written in the stone sweep
us along on a shared journey.
Heating with wood signifies caring. It involves many ecological and traditional
values that are passed on to the next generation. Clean and dry wood and a heatstoring
NunnaUuni fireplace manufactured of pure soapstone form a wonderful,
energy-efficient combination. Thanks to modern technology, NunnaUuni fireplaces
burn wood efficiently and cleanly. A choice that is good for the environment is
good for the conscience, too.
We have harnessed fire as a faithful servant for you. With warm recommendations.
A gift from one generation
to the next
Fire has provided people with warmth
throughout the ages. That heat is still
needed today, and this is no cause
for a guilty conscience. By burning
wood in a modern, cleanly burning
fireplace, we contribute to keeping
the planet in good living condition
for future generations.
Wood-heating on the upswing again
In 2008, a great increase in the use
of renewable energy sources was entered
as one goal for the new climate
agreement by European Union countries.
In the future, the use of CO2
neutral wood should increase greatly.
incomplete burning. The gasification burning
method of the Golden Fire burns the
impurities present in smoke gases to create
thermal energy.
and development work carried out
by NunnaUuni over the decades. The
Golden Fire gasification burning method
has guaranteed the cleanliness of
wood-burning and gone under the
limits of the clean burning indicators
since 1998.
Carbon monoxide, or coal gas, is produced
as a result of incomplete burning.
The Golden Fire gasification burning method has guaranteed
clean burning in stoves and stoves with baking oven since 1998.
The challenge in batch combustion of wood has always been the over-gasification
of the wood and the difficulty in finding the correct ratio for secondary air and gases
released from the wood. NunnaUuni has solved these problems by developing
the Golden Fire gasification burning method. It is based on careful air control that
makes the wood gasify and burn at a high and even temperature of 800–1,200 °C.
The invention has been patented (EP 1008808).
One invention – many benefits
EXCELLENT EFFICIENCY
Even gasification burning of wood produces
plenty of energy.
EFFECTIVE HEAT PRODUCTION
Heat production is intensified by preheated
secondary air that keeps the
burning temperature high.
MINIMAL EMISSIONS
As the smoke gases released from wood
burn immediately around and above
the wood, the amount of emissions
remains low.
QUICK BURNING OF THE EMBERS
When the embers burn quickly, energy
production is intensified and the heating
time becomes shorter.
CLEAN SMOKE DUCTS
Thanks to lighting from below, the hot
and rapidly moving smoke gases prevent
tar from accumulating in the smoke
ducts.
PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION WITH THE
GOLDEN FIRE
1 The primary air is led under the wood,
2
through the small holes in the grate, to
maintain the gasification burning.
2 The secondary air is also led under the
grate to around the gasification burning,
where the air is strongly preheated. The
preheated air mixes with the wood gases
around and above the wood, raising the
burning temperature of the gases to a steady
800–1,200 ºC.
3 While under the grate, the primary
and secondary air flow also cool the grate
structures..
All of this is enabled by fireproof
Mammutti soapstone that stores
heat quickly and works seamlessly
with the fire to provide lasting
warmth.
Heat tempts one to stay even long after the fire has gone out
The blaze of a fire has its admirers,
but the heat of NunnaUuni fireplaces
speaks to you even long after the
flames have gone out. The even heat
radiating from the soapstone tempts
you to stay by the fireplace. The heat
Warmth comes in different forms. Everyone
who has a NunnaUuni fireplace
knows that. A soapstone fireplace releases
heat as the rays of the sun do. That is
how pleasant the heat from a NunnaUuni
fireplace feels on the skin. The heat
waves warm the surfaces that they hit.
There is no sense of a draught. Even the
floors feel pleasantly warm.
Radiated heat, the type of heat borne by
the rays of the sun, is heat that warms the
surfaces it hits. This makes even the floors
feel pleasantly warm.
By contrast, convective heat is based on air
getting warmer and the resulting movement
of the air. Warm air rises, creating an
unpleasant sense of a draught.
er heat sources in the home, a NunnaUuni
power failures.
NunnaUuni fireplaces can provide pleasant heat for over 24 hours.
A genuine soapstone fireplace provides more than 24 hours
of pleasant warmth after just two hours of heating
NunnaUuni utilises the excellent thermal
properties of Mammutti soapstone.
NunnaUuni fireplaces are made
entirely of soapstone – from the fire
chamber to the surface structures.
The best properties of each stone
type are utilised and harnessed to
produce heat in the most efficient
way possible.
The use of soapstone of various types is based on geological
properties and thermal tests
NunnaUuni has a special resource at its sole disposal: a unique Mammutti soapstone deposit that contains several
types of soapstone. For each type, an optimal purpose of use has been found on the basis of its mineralogical
composition and internal structure. The optimal type-specific purpose of use has been determined through geological
research and verified by thermal tests.*
We have verified the heatresistance
of the fine-grained
Mammutti soapstone type
selected for the fire chamber
The heat-resistance of the Mammutti soapstone
type selected for the hottest part
of the fire chamber has been measured
with a thermal shock test (DIN 51068).
The test scale is 1–30, with the test ceiling
of 30 indicating that the sample can
withstand the thermal shock 30 times. A
thermal shock rating of 28 was attained
in the test as the heat-resistance measurement
of the best type of Mammutti
soapstone.
The great amount of energy produced
by our Golden Fire gasification burning
method can be used to heat the
home highly efficiently. The generous
amount of thermal energy produced
by the high temperature is stored in
the stone already in the fire chamber.
The soapstone core of the fireplace
stores up to 70% of the thermal energy,
while the remaining energy is
stored in other fireplace structures via
the smoke ducts. From the core of the
fireplace, the heat radiates evenly into
the room. With two hours of heating,
the slowly released energy can
heat your home for over 24 hours.
Mammutti soapstone conducts heat quickly in the direction of the foliation of
talc schists, and slowly against it. The fluctuation of the thermal conductivity
in different directions is utilised in the design of the structures of the fireplace.
thermal conductivity. In two hours, the
fireplace stores a significant amount of
heat. The Mammutti soapstone type selected
for the fire chamber immediately
stores the heat produced in the gasification
soapstone circulates the heat from
the fire chamber to the surface structures
of the fireplace and releases it slowly and
evenly into the room for, in some cases,
more than 24 hours.
burning, conducting it to the other
structures of the fireplace.
magnesite and foliated talc is ideal for the
demanding conditions of the fire chamber..
Three benefits in one unit
A stove with baking oven contributes
to good everyday life in three ways:
it produces heat, atmosphere, and
tasty, healthful oven-cooked food.
Many of us have seen stoves with a baking
oven in our grandparents’ houses.
Now these stoves are appreciated again.
The development of heating technology
and new design trends have given new
forms to traditional models. A modern
stove with baking oven is the choice of
young people who appreciate sustainable
development and energy-efficient
thinking and also want to have a cosy
atmosphere with benefits.
NunnaUuni manufactures two types of
stove with baking oven: Solo stoves, using
the heat from the fireplace in the oven
as well, and Duo stoves, which have
separate wood-burning spaces for the
fireplace and the oven.
A stove with baking oven is economical.
Wood can be used to heat the house and
cook healthful food at the same time. At a
low temperature, the food cooks slowly by
stewing. A clever cook places the ingredients
in the oven in the morning – to find a
meal waiting when returning from work.
The above are examples of grate temperatures
for Solo and Duo stoves*. Temperatures
for Duo models are higher, because
the baking oven itself is also heated with
wood. The temperatures are for reference
only, as there are differences between various
models.
* Note that at the end of the heating period, the
thermometer temperature for Duo models is approximately
50 degrees higher than the temperature above
the grate. This temperature difference decreases during
cooling..
HESTIA SOLO 4
A NunnaUuni fireplace should be placed as centrally as
possible in the room. As the soapstone heats, it transfers
warmth evenly into the room and the surrounding
materials.
Two benefits in one fireplace. While the oven serves the
cooks of the household, the stove creates a pleasant atmosphere
in the living room.
Marketta Solo / Duo 1 makes the kitchen the most
popular room in the house. The merry fire and lovely
scents wafting from the oven tempt one to stay near
the heat of Marketta. Thanks to doors on one side, one
above the other, Marketta can be placed against a wall,
thus taking little floor space.
Marketta Solo / Duo 2 works in both the kitchen and the
living room. The fire between the block-decorated pillars
provides attractive heat. The baking oven invites you to
cook. Solo models stew the food with the heat from the
stove, while Duo models have a separate wood-burning
area for the oven.
SAVE SPACE – NUNNAUUNI’S CORNER GIANTS ARE EXCELLENT COOKS AND HEATERS.
34 35

Double the benefits of
one heating
This is sustainable development at its
best: an energy-efficient and easy-touse
stove with baking oven saves on
heating and cooking electricity costs
and functions as a space-divider between
living room and kitchen.
Stove with baking oven or
wood-burning cooker?
Those who cook a lot know how solutions
that make cooking easier can improve
the quality of life and offer more
free time – without compromising on
food quality.
Stoves with a baking oven are ideal for
cooking – although they do require some
planning. Preparing the ingredients is the
main thing. The oven takes care of the
cooking, and in the best possible way.
Even large numbers of pastries can be
baked with ease. Heating is taken care
of at the same time.
Wood-burning cookers are well suited
to summer cottages, modern kitchens,
and traditional farmhouse kitchens alike.
NunnaUuni cookers with a Golden Fire
grate are probably the only cookers on
the market that provide clean burning. A
cooker cooks food and heats the kitchen
at the same time – qualities appreciated
especially at summer cottages. A
cooker releases heat quickly and simultaneously
stores it within its structures
for later release.
The above is an example of temperatures
measured at the grate. Note that at the end
of the heating period, the thermometer
temperature for the baking oven is approximately
50 degrees higher than it is above
the grate. This temperature difference
decreases during cooling.
The Waves of Lake
Pielinen
The fireplace in the picture is a bespoke
model made of massive blocks in
accordance with the customer’s wishes.
The lifelike feel of the surface led the
owners to name the fireplace ‘The Waves
of Lake Pielinen’.
Ridge
This fireplace, built for a villa by Lake
Saimaa, was influenced by the massive
open fireplaces in skiing centres in central
Europe.
Individual wishes?
NunnaUuni’s customisation services are there for you. Tell our expert
what you want from a fireplace – our designer will draw a special
model for you. Customisation wishes don’t have to be big. Even a
small change can increase satisfaction. A fireplace can be tailored to
your wishes with choices of stone, benches, shelves, elevating components,
or the use of new surface materials alongside the soapstone.
A modern fireplace
The owners of this modern stone house
wanted the fireplace to be made of natural
stone. This Mammutti soapstone fireplace
decorated with spectrolite creates a
pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.
Major
NunnaUuni also has ready-made
customised products for both rustic and
modern homes. The picture shows the Art-
Nouveau-style Major fireplace.
LISTEN TO YOURSELF. AN INDIVIDUAL FIREPLACE MAKES YOUR HOME MORE ATTRACTIVE.
NunnaUuni accessories
A fireplace with all the bells
and whistles?
Besides customisation, a NunnaUuni
fireplace can be individualised with
ready-made accessories. Here are a few
examples.
Tiles
Soapstone tiling creates a pleasing look
around a fireplace. Decorative tiles are
particularly ideal in front of the fireplace
(see pictures 1–2 and 4–6). Front tiling
by separate order.
Benches and shelves
Closed or open benches and shelves can
be integrated into the fireplace (as shown
in pictures 1–2 and 6).
Flue connection elements
If the flue does not reach the floor, the
flue connection can be made with a separate
flue connection component (shown
in picture 5).
Flue cover stones
Brick and steel flues can be covered with
stones, if desired (see picture 4).
Bottom plinths
In most pictures in this brochure, the fireplaces
are placed on bottom plinths (as
in pictures 3–4). The bottom plinths are
usually ordered separately, but for Cha,
Joya, Blanka, and Hestia models, a socle
is included in the basic price.
Replacement air under the
fireplace
For many NunnaUuni fireplaces, the replacement
air needed for burning can
be led under the fireplace.
Alternative fuels
Some NunnaUuni fireplaces can also burn
pellets, with the use of a separate pellet
unit (Aurum).
Electrical resistor
An electrical resistor (1.5 kW or 2 kW) can
be installed in the smoke ducts of most
NunnaUuni fireplaces.These resistors are
especially useful in holiday houses and
homes that utilise night-rate electricity.
Ignition damper
An ignition damper is a plate that can
be opened to increase the draught in
the flue and facilitate lighting. Many of
our fireplaces can be equipped with one.
Top connection
Most of our fireplaces are connected to
the flue from below. Some have the option
of a connection at the top (as shown
in picture 2), which is ordered separately.
Heat categorisation helps you choose a suitable fireplace.
Estimate the heating needs of the building correctly
Matching the fireplace with your needs
for heating is important. We recommend
that you estimate your heating
needs with the aid of the tables on
the next page or ask a NunnaUuni
expert to make an estimate for you.
We have tested the heating properties
of our fireplaces, and the models
are placed in heat categories on the
basis of the amount of thermal energy
they store during one heating.
Reliable testing in a calorimetric room
NunnaUuni’s Golden Fire fireplaces are tested in a calorimetric room in accordance
with the SAA 142/222 standard, perhaps Europe’s strictest testing and
measurement method for heat-storing fireplaces. The test provides more information
on a heat-storing fireplace than many other tests do, including
• the amount of thermal energy released by the fireplace
• the heat-releasing ability of the fireplace and its fluctuation
• the carbon monoxide, hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide, and particle content of the
emissions
”All of NunnaUuni’s Golden Fire
fireplaces and Solo stoves with baking
oven meet all European emission
and efficiency requirements. More
information from your distributor.”
Select the outdoor temperature and
the size of the room from the table.
By looking up the amount of heating
required, you can determine the
efficiency level (in kWh) of the NunnaUuni
fireplace you need if you are
planning to use the fireplace as the
sole heat source.
The heat demand of a building is affected
by, for example, the insulation,
ventilation, airtightness, internal heat
production, and surface area of cold
external walls and windows. A good,
warm atmosphere is ensured by selecting
the fireplace that best suits the
space in terms of its heat production.
The diagrams presented here are designed
to help you find the fireplace
100 kWh
Fireplaces in heat category 3 produce
more than 60 kWh of thermal energy from
recommended maximum wood amount in
24 hours..
Fireplaces in heat category 2 produce 40–60
kWh of thermal energy from recommended
maximum wood amount in 24 hours.
Fireplaces in heat category 1 produce
less than 40 kWh of thermal energy from
recommended maximum wood amount in
24 hours.
The room height in the example houses is 2.5 m, the window
area is 150f the exterior wall area, and the inside temperature
is 21 ºC. Ventilation is calculated to be 0.5 times the room
volume per hour, and the heat recovery efficiency is 50%. It is
presumed that the heat from the fireplace can move without
obstruction to the whole area to be heated. Insulation requirements
vary from country to country. The Swedish heat insulation
requirements as set forth in BFS 2002:19 are among the
strictest in Europe.
Every building is different, so the need for heating energy is
always space-specific. The diagrams are for guidance only and
are based on calculations from the values given, but they do
add security when you are choosing your fireplace.
You get the most from your fireplace by
placing it centrally.
Good quality firewood, a storing
fireplace of a suitable size and
place in room that burns wood
cleanly – that’s all you need for
heating!
Amount of wood (kg): the maximum amount of wood that can be burned during one heating (according to the user instructions).
Approximate heating time: the estimated time it takes to burn the given amount of wood. Heating time is affected by wood type, the moisture in the wood, and the draught,
among other factors.
Nominal heat output and time: period of even heat release, determined according to the SAA 142/222 testing method (see the diagram).
100%
(h)
50%
(h)
The SAA 142/222 testing method measures the fireplace’s
heat release into the room. This is used to determine the
period of even heat release (the nominal heat output and
heat release of Leila have been used as an example).
Thermal energy: the amount of energy received from the amount of wood stated. The amount of thermal energy is affected by wood type and humidity, among other factors.
Heat storage capacity: times as determined according to the EN 15250 standard.
100% (h): time from the beginning of heating at which the average between the fireplace surface temperature and ambient temperature is at its peak.
50% (h): time from the beginning of heating at which the average between the fireplace surface temperature and ambient temperature is half of the maximum value.
25% (h): time from the beginning of heating at which the average between the fireplace surface temperature and ambient temperature is a quarter of the maximum value.
According to EN 15250, a fireplace can be called heat-storing when it takes at least four hours for the difference between the fireplace surface temperature and the ambient
temperature to decrease to 50%.
Ensure a successful
result
A successful result is the sum of many
factors. To get a successful result,
several technical matters, such as the
flue, base, and safety distances, must
be taken care of. There is no need for
you to become an expert on fireplaces
– you can always turn to a NunnaUuni
distributor or a NunnaUuni Master.
Ordering a home visit is a good way to
start. You get the service to meet your
needs, when it suits you.
Installation included
Installation of NunnaUuni fireplaces takes
skill. Therefore, our fireplaces are always
sold with installation included. The installation
is fully handled by our partners’ authorised
installers. NunnaUuni fireplaces
that are installed by these trained installers
have a five-year warranty on materials
and the heat they provide*.
”Getting a fireplace became easy when I
passed the responsibility to a NunnaUuni
distributor. They ensured that the fireplace
was suitable for the room, acquired the
necessary permits, took care of the disassembly
of the old fireplace and the cleaning
after that, had the new fireplace installed,
and provided instructions in its use. Things
were made easy for me as a customer – I
could just start enjoying the benefits,’
explains one satisfied customer.”
* The five-year guarantee applies to material and thermal
properties, not metal or wearable parts.
* Information provided by NunnaUuni.
** Weight varies by assembly. More detailed weight information can be found on pp. 46–53.
The properties and benefits of NunnaUuni-fireplace are verified with up-to-date tests and measurements in European research institutes.
