Ann Berchtold had seen a lot<br />

of <strong>San</strong> <strong>Diego</strong> art fairs come<br />

and go. Then, a few years<br />

ago, she traveled to Miami<br />

to check out the city’s annual Art Basel<br />

contemporary art fair. “Blown away”<br />

by the cultural overhaul that had taken<br />

place in the ensuing decades since her<br />

previous visit (when she used to go there<br />

for spring break), she had an epiphany.<br />
