Welcome to another edition of the PHJ! I have
certainly picked an action packed time to start
my time here at the PHAA.
We have had a rather hectic time with the various changes in
the office and the closing off dates for futurity payments,
membership renewals and breeding returns amongst our
usual work flow. Thank you for your patience during this
transition time and we ask for just a little more as we actively
process all requests.
Thank you is also extended to Kim and Amy in the office and
all of the Board for making my arrival a welcome one; and to
Lee Ann Hall and Jessica Sciberras for offering their support
and answering my many questions! I know I have some big
shoes to fill.

We are a land of extremes, I do hope that all affected by the
Equine Influenza are keeping up-to-date with the regular
updates from our industry bodies with requirements and
restrictions. Links can be found on our website to relevant
industry or state bodies.
I am excited to be a part of the PHAA. I am new to the horse
industry – mind you learning fast! My background covers a
broad cross-section from hospitality, administrative support,
event and project management to personal coaching. After
working for myself for the last 4½ years it is great to be a part
of a proactive motivated team. Thank you to the members
who have called in or phoned to welcome me to the
organisation. I am looking forward to meeting everyone at the
National Show next year or if you are passing through Dubbo
– don’t hesitate to drop in for a coffee and a chat.

● COMPLETING & LODGING YOUR PAPERWORK
Due to the increased volume of work within our office, we
would like to remind all members that all appropriate
paperwork MUST contain relevant attachments needed eg:
Mare owners certificate, photos, etc.
Paperwork that is received incomplete or incorrect, will now
receive a letter in the form of a checklist and their original
paperwork will be returned to them until corrections are
made. Incomplete or incorrect paperwork will also attract a
penalty fee of $25 and this will have to be paid before your
paperwork will be processed and / or completed.
Please make note that we do not accept photocopies of ANY
service certificates for registrations. We require the original
"pink" copy of the service certificate. Breeders MUST sign
registration applications if registration is to go into another
membership. Failure to do so will incur penalty fees. Please
make sure you are the current owner of the mare and it is
registered in your name. Also, correct foaling dates need to
be documented here within the office, so please ensure that
correct foaling date is written on registration applications.
Copies of registration papers MUST be sent in with
registration if dam is either QH or TB. Stud prefixes can be
used on registrations, but the purchaser must obtain
permission from the breeder, to carry the stud prefix if the
foal is being purchased before registration.
All transfers require the "original" registration certificate to
accompany the Transfer/Bill of Sale document and MUST be
signed by both seller and purchaser. To keep files updated,
please send in updated photographs of the horse for filing
purposes and also to update the registration certificate.
Stallion owners: please ensure that all breeding reports are
in before 1 July every year. We need them in the office to
register foals. If we don't have reports, WE CANNOT
REGISTER!

● ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
The AGM will be held on Monday 17 March at the Expo
Centre, Dubbo Showgrounds at 10.00am. A timetable will
be in the next journal with mail out and lodgement dates.
● EQUITANA
The decision was made on Friday 14 September to
postpone Equitana while the effects of the Equine Influenza
threat are managed. We look forward to being a part of the
event, which will now be held Thursday 20 to Sunday 23
November 2008.
● CHRISTMAS BREAK
Please note the office will be closed for the Christmas Break
from Monday 24 December 2007 and will reopen on
Wednesday 2 January 2008.

PRESIDENTS REPORT - by Craig Dengate
I’d like to welcome Kate Clark to the Paint Horse Association Of
Australia as senior office administrator. Kate was the preferred
applicant out of five applicants the PHAA received resume’s from.
Obviously the job of replacing Lee Ann
Hall required a special person, to
continue to take the PHAA forward. I
am confident that Kate brings with her
a package of diverse people skills,
experience in administration and an
enthusiastic personality to rise to the
challenge that our association
presents. As you may realise Kate’s
position is the most important position
in the running of our association. It is
my belief that our association needs to
continue to lift the standards of
member service and administration
and through the employment of
capable professional employees this
will come to fruition. Although
commitment from some of our past and
present Directors is admirable a
volunteer naturally has limitations. I
look forward in the near future to
working with Kate and as effectively as
possible steering our association in the
right direction.
It is possible whilst you are reading this
journal I will be in America, Jeff & Lee
Ann Hall, Karen and myself will be
attending the American Paint Horse
Association’s 2007 Convention held in
Kentucky USA. I look forward to
attending the APHA Convention, being
able to view how an association
approximately 50 times the size of the
PHAA conducts this event. I will have
the opportunity to attend the general
members meeting, presidential dinner
and observe the standing APHA
committee reports. A social occasion
is provided to have lunch at THE
DERBY CAFÉ and tour the historic
CHURCHILL DOWNS RACETRACK
home of the Kentucky Derby.
Another opportunity I will have is to
converse with some of the executive
committee and management of the
APHA, I have always enjoyed my
experience interacting with these
committed people who obviously are
serious about what they do for the
good of their association. In the past I
have been quite keen to absorb the
processes, policies and experience’s
that they have come across whilst
promoting and helping to administer
their association. This knowledge
gained may help me to do what I do
better for our PHAA.
In recent times some of you may have
been aware that our PHAA office staff
were reduced to two through
unforeseen circumstances. During this
period of time I spent most of my spare
time assisting with extraordinary
members work. Whilst the PHAA is a
member service organisation and we
endeavour to process paperwork
within a 21 day period; there are some
members who aren’t so good with their
own paperwork. The time it takes to
process incomplete paperwork can be
often two to three times longer than
correctly submitted paperwork of the
same item. At times our office staff and
Directors have spent considerable
time and effort chasing up breeding
certificates, transfers, parent validation
and correct information for paperwork
to be processed. I am appealing to all
our members to assist your association
in the submission of correct
paperwork where possible. The
association in the future will be
tightening up on the submission of
incomplete or incorrect paperwork.
Did you know? Rule 124C “It shall be
the responsibility of the seller to
complete the transfer form in its
entirety to include the correct name
and registration number of the horse,
date of sale, name and address of
purchaser and signature and address
of seller. Should a seller of a registered
horse sell a horse and fail to complete
the transfer form and this fact is
established, the seller may be
assessed a penalty and such violations
shall be noted. This penalty shall not
apply when a horse is consigned at a
regular auction sale, where it shall be
the duty of the sale manager to insert
on the transfer the complete name and
address of the purchaser. The
purchaser shall forward completed
transfer form and certificate with the
applicable fee to the association for
appropriate action”. 124A “Blank
transfer report/bill of sale forms will be
furnished free by the association upon
request. The registration certificate
must accompany the completed
transfer form to the association in order
for the horse to be recorded in the
name of the new owner within 30 days
of date of purchase, otherwise a
penalty fee will apply. The PHAA
recently changed the layout of our
Registration Certificates to include the
Transfer Report on the reverse. If you
have a new style certificate there is no
need to obtain a further Transfer
report, simply use the one on the back
of the Certificate of Registration.
On a positive note I have started the
planning for the 2008 National Show
and there will be a two day Paint-O-
Rama commencing on Saturday 15th &
Sunday 16th of March prior to the
National Show. Questionnaire results
and show committee reports have
been seriously considered and I will
endeavour to make the next Paint week
the best one yet. See you there!

DIRECTORS REPORT - by Laurel-lee Wear
Hoping you’re all flu free if you’re living in NSW or QLD and a big
thanks for all those well wishes coming from across the borders.
Lets all hope it’s over as quickly as possible so we can all get
back to normal.
Not so much good news on the Sydney
Royal front the RAS has decided to
exclude the Paints from future
programs at this stage. I made a
second submission but the Committee
has decided that even with the
numbers quoted that they are unable to
support our breed within their
schedule, the sad end to an era but
maybe we will see Western Breeds
reintroduced in the future. I will make a
diary note to write them each year to
ask for inclusion so feel free to join me
in writing each year. I was hoping to
have more positive news but I have
tried all the angles I can think of so if
you have any more please let me know
and I’ll give them a try.

had Paints on their Royal program and
I take this chance to highlight the

PORTFOLIO REPORT - by Jeffrey Hall
[Rules & Regulations]
For some time now the PHAA has been working on preparing a set of
Show and Performance rules, specific to PHAA approved shows. This
will replace the use of the current HSAA rules, giving PHAA their own
rules and jurisdiction over them, no longer being governed in part by
other breed associations.
The rules will cover competition
events, show management and the like
and will form part of our current PHAA
Rule Book.
A draft has now been prepared and is
before the Board at the moment for
proof reading, perusal and feedback.
APHA rules were used as a guide,
however these rules are not identical to
APHA. Australian Paint Horse owners
compete in events that are not
available in the USA and due to the
difference in the sizes of our shows and
membership level many of the other
APHA logistical show rules would not
be appropriate to our members. You
may be interested to note that PHAA
are not “just followers” of the APHA, we
have been able to impart some of our
forward thinking, with APHA now
considering the introduction of Hunter
In Hand events into their rule book. The
visiting APHA President, Mr Richard
Cox, was quite impressed with this
event at our National Show this year.
PHAA also had Led Trail events before
APHA had accepted the event into their
rule book.

Once the new Show and Performance
rules have been accepted by the
Board, the rest of the current rule book
will be in need of some revisions as
some show rules already appear in our
current rule book – all be them sparse,
and we need to avoid overlap or
contradiction. After this step is
complete a new and comprehensive
rule book that contains membership,
registration, show & performance rules
as well as the Association’s Constitution
will be published. With the revisions
that are needed and due process for
acceptance the entire re-write will most
likely come into effect in August 2008.
In the interim PHAA will still abide by
the Show rules of the HSAA.
The next step will be the planning and
acceptance of a judging system,
accreditation, training and examination.
All rule book events will be covered in
detail, including halter. Evaluation for
halter classes will appear in the new
PHAA Show and Performance rules.
Further events taking in what we may
consider rodeo events will be included
as well – various roping events, to try to
promote the versatility of our Paint
Horses. Some other classes -
Traditional English events of Dressage
and Hacking, will not be included – you
will be referred to the appropriate EFA
& Hack Council rules, the same will be
for Cutting – NCHA rules.
Once an acceptable Judging
Accreditation has been formulated the
PHAA will be able to plan Judging
Seminars across Australia. This process
should commence a few months after
the acceptance and adoption of the
new Show and Performance Rules.
Further down the track, PHAA may
consider hosting seminars on Show
Management along with Judging
Seminars. This will educate our Show
Organisers, Stewards, Judges and
helpers, making PHAA Approved
Shows the Show to go to.

- Genetics -
HERDA – DNA TESTING
In May a DNA test for the genetic condition called Hereditary Equine
Regional Dermal Asthenia (or HERDA) was developed by researchers
at the University of California, Davis.
A horse affected by HERDA suffers an
excruciatingly painful disorder where
the collagen fibres do not properly
connect the deep layer of skin called
the sub cutis to the underlying tissue.
These defective fibres separate when
placed under stress causing the skin to
stretch and eventually it gives way and
tears. Horses usually show symptoms
as a 2yo when started under saddle.
The pressure of the saddle causes the
skin to shift resulting in haematomas
and sores or may even tear the skin
apart. These lesions are hard to stitch
and leave terrible scars. There is no
cure for HERDA so afflicted horses are
usually put down humanely.
The diagnostic DNA test for HERDA
that has been developed allows
identification of horses that are affected
or that carry the specific mutation.
Other skin conditions can mimic the
symptoms of HERDA. The DNA test will
assist veterinarians to make the correct
diagnosis. For horse breeders,
identification of carriers is critical for
the selection of mating pairs.
Breedings of carrier horses have a
25% chance of producing an affected
foal. Breedings between normal and
carrier horses will not produce a
HERDA foal although 50% of the foals
are expected to be carriers.
Results from the diagnostic test offered
are reported as follows:
• N/N Normal - horse does not
have the HERDA gene.
• N/HRD Carrier - horse carries
one copy of the HERDA
gene.
• HRD/HRD Affected - horse has two
copies of the HERDA gene.
To facilitate our members in making
informed breeding choices the Board
of Directors from the 1st August 2007,
have enacted a rule change which
requires all imported horses and
imported semen which trace to Poco
Bueno be tested for HERDA and have
their status recorded on their
registration records. We also
encourage and support the testing of
all existing registrations and their
resulting progeny.

HALL OF FAME
This will be the last reminder for
applications for the 2008 Hall of Fame
inductions which will be due before
the next journal comes out. Inductees
will be presented during the National
Show week and will coincide with our
35th Anniversary.

contributions of Australian bred
stallions to the Association so have a
look for the “Australian Made” article.
If you have a “home grown” stallion
that has progeny doing him proud in
the show ring let me know and we’ll
sing his praises.

• HOW LONG YOU’VE BEEN INVOLVED IN PAINTS
Sue Sparkman introduced me to the paint world three years ago now.
• WHAT HAS YOUR CAREER IN PAINTS INCLUDED
I was lucky enough to learn to ride on the Sparkman’s fantastic mare
Skipastaray, who taught me a lot about western riding. Coming straight
out of the English world, the hardest part was having no contact on the
reins! Skip and I with help from the Sparkmans achieved High Point
Performance Horse of the Year in 05/06, the first year I ever rode western!
She is a truly amazing horse and will always hold a special place in my
heart. In 2005 Skippy had a paint bred colt (by embryo transfer) by My
Only Concention and I knew I had to have him, so Sherman became my
project. I couldn’t have asked for anything better as this year at the
Nationals he went Grand Champion PB Gelding at Halter, National Champ
Hunter in Hand and Reserve in the Led Trail!
• YOUR CURRENT HORSE
My Only Skipastar (aka Sherman), a paint bred gelding who is now 2
years old.
• BEST SPECIAL MOMENT WITH YOUR PAINT
Winning Grand Champion Paint Bred at the Nationals. I told Sue that
Halter didn’t matter to me (Performance rocks) and she had great delight
in reminding me of that as I came out of the class with tears of happiness
running down my face and shaking like a leaf. Sherman has also won
numerous High Point awards with SEVPHC including overall Paint Bred
Halter and High Point Yearling Performance against all western breeds.
• WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR PAINT
Sherman is going into training for his two year old year but I hope to ride
him in a couple of AO classes at the Halter Showcase this year as well as
take him to the State and National shows. He blends in really well at the
quarter horse shows because he doesn’t have any patches.
• WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL WITH YOUR CURRENT HORSE
To do well in Open and AO competition at major all breed shows like
Halter Showcase and NPHA as well as local quarter horse and paint club
level shows. I think he is going to be a fantastic all round horse.
• WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PAINTS AS A BREED
Their personality, trainability plus every one is uniquely marked.
• WHAT ARE YOUR TRAINING SECRETS
That would be telling! It’s all about how much time you are prepared to
invest in your horse. When Sherman was a yearling, I trained him five
days a week for about half an hour each day for five months before the
Nationals. Short sessions are the key with babies and patience, but don’t
put up with any nonsense!
• FAVOURITE EVENT AND WHY
The Nationals for the socialisation and the Halter Showcase because I can

Well it’s been a bit quiet at my place with
everyone being placed into lockdown by
the Equine Flu, gone are Saddle Club days
of all of us gathering at someone’s place
to ride.
Therese Searle and I have
to say while it was a great
day for training it was cold
and windy. Turns out that the
wind made for a great
training aid as we all show at
Cobbitty on a regular basis
so now all our horses are
much
better for the day
of training in the
wind. We had a
good turn up as
you can see from
our happy snaps
which were all

like
to call “Murph Cam”. Tim
and Therese kept us all
entertained and everyone
was keen to get together
again. It’s great to train with
others as you can swap
ideas and training tips with
the added bonus of being
under the guidance of a
trainer to help you out. I
have to say it was a great
chance to get together and
was even better when the
following weekend we had
a double day show and all of
us were able to support
each other. A big thanks to
Tim and Therese for the
time and effort they put into
the day and a monthly
coffee club has been born
from the clinic which is
great for all of us. If you’re
interested in joining our

one being held.

225. YEARLING CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE
New Rule
(d)
And at least fifty (50) of those points have been won in
performance events approved by the PHAA.
1. No more than ten (10) points won in any one
performance event will be counted.
2. Horse must have earned at least one Register of
Merit in each of Categories 1, 2, 3 and 4 of
performance events as listed above.
3. And must have earned at least one (1) Register of
Merit in either category 6 or 8 as set out in
Performance events above.
4. And must have earned at least ten (50) points as
indicated under category 6.
(A) The purpose of this award to recognise the achievements
of Regular Registered and Paint Bred Yearling Horses.
(B) In order to qualify for the award the Yearling must have
attained a Register of Merit in each of the 4 events of Halter,
Led Trail, Lunge Line and Hunter in Hand, before 31st
December of their 2 Year Old year.
237. AMATEUR ACTIVITY PROGRAMME

(g) If two age divisions are to be offered, they shall be 44 yrs
and under and 45 yrs and over. Age calculations are as at 1st
August of each year.

111. BLOODTYPING/DNA TESTING
(This new rule is in response to the new gene test now available
for the HERDA genetic disorder, present in some Poco Bueno
bloodlines. For many years, the PHAA has been in the forefront
of identifying and trying to minimise or eliminate genetic
disorders from Paint Horses in Australia – such as HYPP.
Recording of HERDA status will allow Paint Horse breeders to
make informed and responsible decisions regarding future
matings.)
Add clause
(g) From 1st August 2007 all imported horses and imported
frozen semen donors of ‘Poco Bueno’ bloodlines must be
tested and their status recorded for the genetic condition,
HERDA. The PHAA would encourage members to
voluntarily test all Australian horses that trace back to
‘Poco Bueno’ and have that status noted on the horse’s
studbook records. Where the status of both parents has
been tested negative, no further testing of progeny is
required.
228. AWARDS FOR PAINT BRED HORSES
(These rule changes were made to bring rules and categories
for Awards for Paint Bred Horse in line with those for Regular
Registered Horses)
Amendment to Clause (c)
(c) Points would be awarded on the same basis as all other
PHAA points. Six awards will be available (ie. ROM,
Superior, Champion, Century, Superior all Round,
Supreme).
228A. PHAA PAINT BRED SUPREME HORSE
The title PHAA Paint Bred Supreme Champion will be awarded
to any stallion, mare or gelding which has been issued a
numbered regular registry certificate by the PHAA, provided
the said horse meets the following requirements.
(a) Has been named at an approved show, National or State
Champion at halter.
(b) Has won a total of at least eighty (80) points in halter and
performance shows.
(c) At least thirty (30) of those points must have been won in
halter classes.
In the event that this title is awarded, a special and engraved
trophy shall be prepared and presented to the owner of the
said horse at the next annual general meeting of the PHAA. A
proper notation shall be made in an applicable Stud Book and
other records of the PHAA.
The title of "PHAA Paint Bred Supreme Champion" is hereby,
from this date and in the future, reserved by the PHAA for its
express use. The registration certificate of any horse shall be
revoked permanently by the Association if the owner thereof
fraudulently advertises, claims or holds forth that this certain
horse is entitled to the title "PHAA Paint Bred Supreme
Champion" prior the title being officially awarded by the
Association.
228B. PHAA Paint Bred Superior All Round Horse
The title "PHAA Paint Bred Superior All Round Horse" will be
awarded to any stallion, mare or gelding which has been

2. Must have one superior rating in one performance class

least four (4) of the performance contest categories 1, 2,
3, 4, 5, 6 and 8.
In the event that this title is awarded, a special and properly
engraved trophy shall be prepared and presented to the
owner of the said horse at the next annual general meeting of
the PHAA. A proper notation shall be made in the applicable
Stud Book and other records of the PHAA.
The title of "PHAA Paint Bred Superior All Round Horse" is
hereby, from this date and in the future, reserved by the PHAA

I was first impressed
with Wills attitude to
horses, competition
and life in general
when I had the
pleasure of meeting
him, along with his
parents Arthur and
Sharon and of course
“Kash” at a local
Dubbo Western
Performance Show
earlier this year.
wWe have all heard the old phrase, it’s
often used to encourage us and to keep
us motivated. Nothing could be closer to
the truth than if you have had the
privilege of meeting young PHAA
member William Hupp. Will is the most
delightful young man and an inspiration
to many older, more experienced Paint
Horse competitors. Born and raised in
the charming NSW country town of
Gulgong, and at 11 years of age, young
Mr Hupp can already claim a NSW State
Championship title, deservedly won with
his remarkable Paint Gelding
Counthekash.
Nothing phases Will, he continues on his
path no matter what, is eager to learn and
not afraid to ask for help, this is all
reflected in his horses performance. The
odds can be stacked against the new to
the industry and the younger youth
competing in Open events, let alone
couple this with an inexperienced
yearling. None the less, Will and Kash
have shared success and enjoyed their
journey headed for greater heights.
The determination and dedication that
Will has shown is second to none, and not
just with his horse. Will was born with a
condition known as Talipes. At birth his
left leg was twisted around facing the
opposite direction and there was no calf
muscle formed on that leg. He spent his
first 6 months of life in plaster, with
weekly changes, and major reconstructive
surgery carried out on the leg. At only 7
months of age he had a further operation
to release the tendons, however this was
not as successful as had been hoped.
Further surgery 1 year later, an infection
set in and Will almost died. Another 6
months later and another lot of surgery.
Will not being able to try to start to walk
until he was 2 ½ years old. As a result of
his condition, Will has one foot 2 sizes
smaller than the other, one regular leg and
one that is somewhat slimmer, and walks
with a slight limp. I asked Will about his
leg and with a cheeky smile his reply was
“Well, I’m lucky to have one”, he then
added “When I ride a horse, all of the pain

just
goes away” – what a fabulous
outlook on life this young man has.
Although the family were not really “into horses” Mum and
Dad gave into the wants of their young boy, who always
wanted to be a cowboy. A Welsh Mountain Pony named
Tillie came into Will’s life when he was only 3 years of age.
Tillie taught Will a thing or two along the way, being a
seasoned child’s pony, she knew all of the tricks. Tillie
remains part of the Hupp family today, and has produced
Will’s second horse “Slim” a black pony that started off Will’s
Western Performance Showing in January 2007.
Why Paints? I thought that was an obvious question to ask.
The Hupp family raise Polled Hereford cattle and have
another property in Boggabri, NSW. Arthur had seen an
(unregistered) overo Paint mare on the neighbouring
property in Boggabri and decided that he should buy her for
Sharons birthday 3 years ago. What a surprise! Wills keen
interest in horses also led him to become involved with the
neighbours to the family home in Gulgong, Dave and Kathy
Henderson. Will had watched Dave & Kathys children riding
a Paint Horse and wanted to go and ride it as well. This then
extended into sharing fun days with the Henderson children
Josh & Meredith. Paint fever had touched the Hupp Family’s
hearts and Arthur needed to find a registered Paint Horse to
buy. Along came Illoosion, known as “Louie”, now a 4 year
old, she was purchased as a 2 Year Old in the process of being
broken in. Louie proved to be a successful show horse,
winning the 2006 National Show 2 YO Hunter Under Saddle
Futurity, 3rd in the 2YO Western Pleasure Futurity and
Reserve National Champion 2YO Hunter Under Saddle class.
Will loved Louie and wanted a horse just like her. At the
Paint Horse National Show in 2006 Will met the full brother
to Louie, a weanling gelding named Counthekash. In fact
Dennis Sullings who had Kash at the show said that the
minute Kash saw Will – he knew that it was love at first
sight. Kash chose Will. Will wanted Kash, he would check
the Loots Image web page regularly to look at the gelding,
then he was so disappointed when Kash was taken off the
site. Arthur explained to Will that Kash had probably been
sold to someone else and then removed from the website.
Will accepted the fact that the gelding had been sold.
Unbeknownst to him, Arthur and Aunty Norma had already
travelled to Gunnedah and collected the gelding. On the
morning of Wills 10th birthday, what should be on the front
lawn – the beautiful Paint gelding Counthekash!
Dreams do come true.
Kash was only a young horse, and Will himself new to Paints,
help training Kash came from trainer Wayne Caslick. During
the Christmas holidays of 2006 Wayne began training Will

where there’s a will...
and Kash in Led Trail. Their debut was in January 2007
where Kash, along with Wills pony Slim attended the Dubbo
Western Performance Club Show. Will & Slim competed in
Showmanship and Best Presented, Kash was a little excited
about the show however still managed a 2nd ribbon in the
Best Head class. Will was determined to improve on his
performance and returned with Kash for the February show.
He had practiced his Led Trail every day in between shows.
The partnership were proud to receive the second place
ribbon in Led Trail at that show. A similar result was
achieved at the March show under Wayne’s guidance.
Next came the National Show. Mum decided that the
National Show was not really the place “for a kid to show a
horse”, Wayne therefore given the job of showing Kash. Will
was just as excited to watch his horse under the guidance of
Wayne as he would have been to compete himself. Kash
finished National Reserve Champion in both Led Trail and
his Gelding Halter class. Not long after the National Show
Kash developed a mystery rash on his hindquarters.
Remedies were being offered to the Hupps left, right and
centre, but nothing seemed to help. The rash spread and
effected Kashs mane, the NSW State Show was looming and
Kash had next to no mane – certainly not enough to band.
What to do? The mane had to be hogged off. Slowly the rash
healed, just in time for the NSW State Show – and one less
job to do – no banding!
Will had practised his Led Trail everyday and Lunge Line
most days. He has a modest but effective trail course at
home, with a gate, bridge and many other “spooky” obstacles
to help teach Kash to be a solid, trained and reliable trail
horse. Aside from working together, Will and Kash spend fun
time together too. I asked Will what was his favourite thing
that Kash can do, to which he replied “Kash gets his black
tyre feeder and throws it across the paddock. Not because he
is hungry, just because he wants to play. He can throw
it 20 feet.”
The NSW State Show came around and it was time for the
Led Trail class. Ten competitors, all adults except for Will.
Staying very focused Will entered the arena. A few had gone
before him, each time the judge nodding to indicate that
they could start. This time the judge took a second look
when he saw such a young competitor in Open competition.
This did not deter Will. Kash worked quietly and cleanly
through the course, listening to every command that Will
would give him – the pair have really bonded over their time
together and work as a team. The other competitors and
spectators watched intently as the pair completed the
course. After the last obstacle was completed a round of
applause was heard, everyone knew that Will and Kash had
put in the best performance so far. Not another competitor
could match the run – awarding from 7th through to first
would have been an anxious time, Mum was especially
nervous. Then when the time came to announce the State
Champion – William Hupp and Counthekash – everyone
applauded, it was a wonderful achievement.
I asked Will if he was nervous competing at State level
against the adults and trainers, to which he replied “I was just
a little nervous, so I just pretended I was at the local Dubbo
Show. I was really happy with Kash and am very proud of
him.” When asked what was his favourite moment “It is
really hard to pick out the best, but I can’t wait until next
show season. I think the best thing about the shows is that
we are all like a big family. I now have lots of “Aunties” and
“Uncles” and even an adopted Step-Pop Jack Abbott.”
Will has ambitions as well, he is focused on constantly

improving and doing his
best “I plan to ride in all
of the big shows and
excel in everything I try.
I want to make an
all-around horse out
of Kash - Western,
Reining, Cutting, English,
everything really. I am
going to aim for
qualifying for the 2012
Youth Team, that will
give Kash & I time to
learn to do all of those
events”.
Driving by the Hupps
family farm in Gulgong,
you can see that
determination is a part
of the Hupp way. Have
a look at the photograph of the sign that greets passing
visitors, it says it all. I spoke with Sharon, Wills mother about
her rising star. Sharon is rightfully a very proud mother,
telling me that her son rarely gets into any mischief and
applies himself to whatever he takes on. Not only has Will
excelled with his horse, he plays Touch Footy for his school,
loves to sing Alan Jackson songs and has represented his
school in Zone Cross Country. When he was training for the
cross-country he would run everyday with his father, for 8
weeks. Sharon laughed as she told me that she was worried
that Arthur would have a heart attack trying to keep up with
Will. The family are appreciative of the support that Will has
received from his school, neighbours and other competitors
at the Horse Shows - especially Chris Burton and Dennis
Sullings, Dave & Kathy Henderson, Helen Moran, Kath
Peterson & Jeffrey Hall. The family have made a lot of new
friends through owning their Paint Horses and look forward
to going to future horse shows. So keep a look out for this
ambitious young man and don’t be afraid to go and say hello! ✪

Monday morning feed time. Off on the usual routine, from
house to silo, get the oats, start the brood mare rounds.
First stop C-Notes Honey Bee, 23 years young and 16 days
over term in foal to Ratchett’s Impresed (Imp USA).
iI had started to become a bit anxious about her being over
due to foal, however she was a picture of health – fat, shiny
and happy. She had developed a reasonably full udder the
previous day so I was expecting her to foal in the next few
days, she was in a yard close by the house so that I could
keep an eye on the old dear. This was to be a special foal
from a special mare. “Ten” as she is affectionately known, is
in her twilight years and has been one of the favourite mares
that Kevin Mills has owned and bred. Ten was one of his
first foals by the imported stallion C-Notes Playboy, not
shown herself as solid paints did not have showing rights in
her younger years. She is a dear, sweet mare and has been
used as a lead pony for many terminally ill children.
As usual Ten spotted me with the barrow full of oats and
called out, I was about 100m away from her. She then laid
down and appeared to be in labour. The onset was very
quick, I went straight to her to find that she had prolapsed,
a foal and what appeared to be a part of her bowel and
uterus were exposed. Her main uterine artery had ruptured
causing her to bleed out quickly. She lifted her head, looked
at me and died. It was that quick. Even though I had my
telephone on me there was no time to call a vet, it was only
minutes. My attention shifted to the foal, a coloured colt,
who was very strong and on his feet in a few moments. I
went to the house and grabbed what I needed and milked as
much colostrum from Ten as I could. It was heartbreaking to
see her lying there and to have to do that to her, but the foal
needed the colostrum, he was now my priority. The newborn
foal is dependant on its mothers colostrum for immunity
against infection, it is imperative that a foal receive sufficient
colostrum in the first 24 hours of its life. The colostrum is
high in protein and antibody content. I was able to draw
around 350ml from her and the foal had no hesitation in
sucking from a bottle. We always have a bottle, teat, funnel
and milk replacer on hand. You hope you never need it, but
you just never do know when an emergency such as this can
arise.
First feed out of the way and successful, I then called Ross
Pedrana Veterinary Surgery to come and check the foal over.
What to do with baby now, Dr Ross would not be here for a
few hours and I have a new born baby to care for. Luckily the
day was quite warm for this time of year, I carried and
walked the foal to the stables and settled him there. I was
able to get a little more colostrum from his mother and again
he eagerly drank from the bottle.
Due to the outbreak of Equine Influenza it was not possible
to call around to find a foster mare, the no movement of
horses regulation was in effect and a mare would not be able
to be transported here, nor the foal to a mare. Only one day
earlier, we had another mare foal, maybe she would take the
new born and maybe she would still have a little colostrum.
Colostrum is usually in the mares milk for the first 24 hours,
she had foaled 26 hours before, so maybe not, but worth a
try. I knew that my chances of her accepting the orphan were
very slim as she still had her own baby and had spent enough
time with him to form a strong maternal bond.
I caught the mare “Loot Scootn Suzie” (Poosh) and put her
in a stable with her foal, I then brought the new born in. I
knew this could end in disaster but when weighing up the
good and bad I believed it was worth a shot. Poosh is a lovely
big mare, quite fractious at times and not the friendliest –
but only through lack of handling. She is not really the most
social horse on the property, but she was the only one with
a relatively new born baby. She was not happy about the
other foal being there and started to show aggression towards

him. I tied her up and fitted
her with a collar and leg
strap to prevent her from
kicking at the foal or at me. I
directed the orphan foal to
the teat and he was
immediately interested in
suckling, Poosh on the other
hand did not want him
there. To make matters
worse I was home alone
and had no one to help
handle the mare. I then got
her own baby alongside of
the orphan and managed to
have them both suckle at
the one time. Once I was
happy that they were both
full I left them to sleep
and put the mare in the
adjoining stable, where
she was able to see both
babies.
Time for mares, foals and
myself to take a break
while waiting for the Vet.
I returned to the house and got into reading several
different books that discussed raising orphan foals. Most only
dealt with one mare / one foal or did not give much hope of
a mare accepting a second foal. In most cases a mare loses a
foal and is then used as a nanny mare for a foal that has lost
its mother. Many thoroughbred studs keep nanny mares just
for this purpose. All the books had one thing in common and
that was to disguise the smell of
the new foal. So I guessed I had
to make both foals smell the
same to confuse the mare into
not knowing which was hers. I
spoke to Dr Ross before doing
this and he said to try using
vanilla. Returning to the stables
I allowed the mares natural foal
up to her first and watched the
way in which she had greeted
him – firstly she sniffed his
buttocks, then his shoulder and
then his face – I let him suckle
then took Poosh away. Next
these 3 areas on both foals were
wiped with the vanilla and the
mare allowed back in the stable, restrained with the leg strap
and both foals given the chance to suckle. For a few
moments she was not sure and allowed them both to drink.
This didn’t last very long before she realised there was an
addition to her family that she didn’t approve of.
Still, I believed it was worth persevering as long as I could get
the new born to suckle I didn’t really mind that I would have
to restrain the mare and hoped that over a few hours she
would give in and accept him. Allowing the foal to bond
with a mare is better for his psychological development than
bonding with a human. The foals have now been named –
the orphan Jose and the natural foal Ricky, don’t really know
where those names come from – but they will do. Jose thinks
that I am his mother, but Poosh
is the milk bar, so that’s not too
bad for now, until we can get
him to bond with the other foal
or the mare. Dr Ross arrived and
assessed Jose and my chances of
getting him to survive and
having Poosh accept him. As a
precaution Jose received a bag
of plasma intra-venously and
the usual baby vaccinations. A
catheter was left in place so that
we could easily administer any
drugs that may be needed. The
plasma would boost his immune
system. Dr Ross also provided a
drum of milk replacement powder so that I could bottle feed
Jose, both of us assuming that Poosh would reject him.

Every 2 to 3 hours I would return to the stables to restrain
the mare and allow both foals to feed. As the vanilla did not
seem to be masking the differing scents of the two foals I
switched to eucalyptus oil. The oil being a natural antiseptic

may also benefit the well being of José. A light wipe over
with eucalyptus oil and some Vicks Vapour Rub on the
mares nose each feed. As each feed went by Poosh was a
little more acceptant of José, the oils seeming to mask the
scents sufficiently to confuse her long enough for them to
feed. The foals and mare were kept separate between feeds
to avoid injury to the orphan as the mare was still showing
some aggression towards Jose during day 2.
On the second evening José had a check up from visiting vet
Dr Kevin Doyle. Finding it difficult to select which of the 2
foals was the orphan José got the all clear on day 2, another
bag of plasma just to be sure and continue with our regular
feeding program.
By the next morning, without the use of a leg strap, Poosh
was allowing the foals to drink. She was happy to stand and
let them nurse while ever I watched over her although she
was still quite tense. The few times she would show signs of
aggression I would only have to scold her and she would
refrain. Everything was starting to work out, the foals were
in a routine and accepted the mare leaving after each feed.
As I would move the mare out of the stable the 2 boys would
move to the back of the stable and play for a short while and
then sleep. They were recognising the sound of the gate to
the stable compound and would call out every time they
heard the chain rattle, knowing I was on my way to put them
on the milk bar. Two happy, healthy foals and a stable block
that smells like a koala house. I was becoming concerned for
the welfare of the mare though. It takes a good mare to
accept another foal, let alone raise her own and live in
confinement that she is not used to. We had started to
develop a bond and Poosh was settling to my activities. I
would make a point of picking her large bundles of fresh
grass each time she fed the babies and gently brush her,
anything to keep her happy. I was careful with the length of
time between feeds, not only for the babies sake but I was
concerned about the mares comfort and the risk of mastitis
or tender teats.
Getting up through the night and walking back and forth to
the stables all day was taking its toll on me already. At least
with a human baby they are in the house! Each time we fed,
the mare seemed to settle a little more and by the 4th day I
was able to let her into the stable with the boys and leave her
alone for an hour at a time without any restraint. Although I
was doubtful she would ever accept Jose, she was now
allowing him to walk around her, walk up and nurse and play
with her foal. Up until this stage she would only let him
nurse. She would now happily eat her feed while the foals
were drinking, this indicated to me that she was starting to
relax and accept that she had double trouble. I decided to
test her and led her out of the stable with
the 2 foals following, a little sunshine and
some fresh grass would have to cheer her
up and I would be able to see her reaction
to the foals out in a larger space. She was
very protective of her own foal and

showed no aggression towards Jose. And
then a wonderful thing happened, Jose
wandered off a little and she called out to him, he answered
and came back. I felt so excited.
Later that evening I had cause to have the vet visit to attend
another mare (all is well with her) both Dr Ross and Dr
Doyle both were very pleased with the progress of Jose, both
commenting on his strength and that they would not be able
to choose which was the orphan if they didn’t know.
Day 5 – both foals are gaining weight and growing well, and
both need to stretch their legs more often. So a few more
trips out on the grass with Poosh through the day. With both
foals growing so well and after consultation with the Vet, I
decided to supplement their diets with Di-Vetelact Milk
replacer by bucket as well as allowing them to nurse from
the mare. I introduced both foals to the bucket by putting
milk on my fingers and lowering my hand into the bucket.
Both were very interested in the milk but didn’t want to put
their heads down to drink. I tried for quite some time and
then though this would never work. I left the bucket secured
to the wall in the stable and returned to the house. After 2
hours I returned to find the bucket drank almost dry and
both babies with milky muzzles and milky ears. That was a
relief. With the introduction of bucket feeding I could
stretch the feeds out to 4 hours, letting them nurse from the
mare and then leaving them with a bucket, being careful not
to leave the mare too long in between drinks.
Jose is now 1 week old and progressing beautifully. He is
developing his own personality and learning about being a
horse, he has learnt that humans are not horses and other
foals are so much more fun to play with. Hopefully he will
continue on his way and be a beautiful gelding that you may
see in the show ring.
With the constant handling, Poosh has become a delightful
mare, she enjoys the attention she is getting and has become
quite friendly. She loves getting brushed and having grass
picked for her. Although she can’t wait to have the babies in
to drink, when time comes around she certainly lets me
know when they have had enough and she wants to return
to her own stable. She is becoming quite a character.
I hope that this story can help anyone who is in a similar
situation. Orphan foals and nanny mares are not uncommon,
but getting them to work out can be very trying. Believe me,
it is well worth the sleepless nights when you hear that little
nicker or see the babies playing together in the sunshine with
an anxious mother standing by. Don’t ever give up on the
little ones. ✪

Appropriately
named as many people who bought tickets
were doing exactly that, chasing their dream to
own a Paint Horse. It certainly happened when
Jessica Burrows purchased her winning ticket.
Jessica had purchased 5 tickets over a few
weeks from the BP Mooloola Qld (operated
by PHAA member and stout
“
Amateur supporter Shirley
Sommers) not thinking that she
would have any chance of
winning.
Jessica’s 22nd birthday was on July 18th,
what a surprise when she received a
telephone call on the 21st to say that she
had won the raffle. Jessica’s boyfriend Rob
answered the call and handed the telephone
over to Jessica, both believing it was a hoax
call or a belated birthday prank. She asked a
few times to make certain that the call was
genuine. At that time she did not live in
Caboolture but just happened to be in town
at the Fantastic Farm Show, in their truck.
The raffle was drawn at the Queensland State Show in
Caboolture. Talk about coincidence.

filly for the show, but were not so prepared when it came
time to say goodbye. Kim and Margaret’s 3 children, Khira,
Jesse and Ethan had worked with the filly since she was
weaned, doing most of the feeding, rugging and daily chores,
it was a very emotional day to see “Chase” go to her new
home. The Harris family still miss her but are very pleased
that her new owner is so excited about her.
Chase is progressing really well in her new home and has
become a part of the family. “She is absolutely gorgeous and
we just love her. We have lunch at the
picnic table some days and Chase comes
along with us, standing by the table” Jessica
told me. Although Jessica had no other
horses at the time of winning Chase, she
had previously owned and loved a
Standardbred x Arabian mare named
Bonnie, who unfortunately had to be sold 5
years ago when Jessica moved house.
Jessica had owned her since a young horse,
broken her in and had a lot of fun riding
her. Presently Jessica and Chase are
learning natural horsemanship together
and are doing a lot of basic groundwork.
When the filly is old enough she will be
broken in and maybe shown, Jessica has no
high pressure plans for Chase, what ever
comes along, she just wants to have fun
and enjoy her. Thank you to South East Queensland Paint
Horse Association for allowing the PHAA to draw the raffle
during the Queensland State Show. ✪

performed Paint Stallion in Australia. Over his eight
year show career he spent six months of each year in the
paddock with his mares and foals, not only does Cloudy
have the ability to perform he also has temperament to
die for and has proven this many times over in the arena
and in the paddock with his mares and foals.

NSW State Show and in 2007 she took out Hi Point Junior
Horse and Junior versatility for the State Show.

Bred by Mike and Carol Elliott in Victoria
and sold as a weanling to John Morrison who
showed him to win PHAA National
Champion colt and Yearling Futurity
Champion.
Purchased by Murray and Vicki Stevens in August 1992
when Peppy Shaker had just turned four. His show
record at that time had 16 Halter Points and 1 Western
Pleasure point.
Over the next two years Peppy Shaker with limited training
and shown by trainer, David Norbury, Peppy attained
National Championships in Western Pleasure, Reining and
Get of Sire plus multiple State Championships in Halter,
Trail, Western Pleasure, Western Riding and Reining. At his
retirement from the show ring he was a PHAA Champion, a
Superior Halter Horse plus ROMs’ in Trail, Western
Pleasure, Western Riding and Reining.
Sired by Peppy’s Chickabar, who was a sabino by the
imported QH Crop out sire, Peppy’s Doc Bar, who now after
his death has been registered QH. Chickasha Bar, the dam
of Peppy’s Chickabar, was a Sabino crop out by Chickasha
Dan (Imp) out of Kitty’s Gail (Imp). Peppy’s Chickabar as a
two year old won the 2YO Open Breed Sires Classic Western
Pleasure futurity with Craig Emerton and then as a 3YO
won the Wagga Cutting Futurity again ridden by Craig
Emerton. The following year he won the NCHA Derby with
Graham Lamey on board.
Peppy Shaker’s dam, San Antonio Rose, a loud Overo, was a
PHAA Weanling Halter Futurity Champion and National/ State
Weanling Filly Champion & has a Superior Halter award.
Her sire, the loud Overo Diamond Jim Jnr (Imp) has only
five PHAA registered progeny because he died from an
injury shortly after arriving in Australia. Her dam, San Jose,
was a crop out by San Leo Joe (Imp) out of Sextant (TB)
who produced six PHAA Weanling Futurity Champions.
Peppy Shaker has sired progeny who have shown ability in
most facets of the horse industry. To name a few who have
proven their sire has past on his versatility and trainable
mind are;
• Twin Oaks Cleopatra – trained by Natasha Backhouse and
created history by being the first horse / rider combination
to win all three VRHA, NSWRHA and QRHA Non-Pro
Reining futurities plus the NRHA Youth Champion. Cleo
also won the PHAA Senior Reining title plus multiple State
Champion Reining titles.
• Peppys Bonanza – PHAA Sires Classic Champion,
Weanling Halter Futurity Champion and Southern Circuit
Super Slider Reining series Champion
• Shake It Up Babe – PHAA National Weanling Halter

PHAA YOUTH • DIRECTOR - LEE WEAR
✪ Youth report...
It’s an exciting time of the year what with the World Show Team to be
selected and the new season of showing starting up along with the
wrapping up of last season’s high points. Congratulations to all of you
that have earned yourself ROMS throughout the year and to everyone on
the way in which you have conducted yourselves, I’m always impressed with
the level of sportsmanship shown throughout our Paint Youth.
It’ll be a slow start to the year with NSW & QLD in lockdown from
the Equine Flu but it’s a great chance to practice all those arena
exercises so you’re ready for your next show.
Each journal we try and spotlight a Youth member so you can all
get to know a bit about each other even if you don’t see each other
too often. This gives us a great way of getting to know each other
but is limited by the amount of space we have in our journal so
with that in mind we would like to build up our web page so we
can all get to know each other a bit better. If you would like to be
involved in providing your snapshot details and a photo for our
web page we will see about getting our page up and running. You
don’t have to show to be involved, you might be a trail rider or go
to Pony Club or even just hang out locally with your paint,
everyone is welcome. If you’re interested email me at

can get your information from you.
You’ll also notice a report from your Youth President and a review
of the QLD State show, Rebecca and myself are aiming at having a
dedicated page for Youth each Paint Horse Journal so if you have
a story you’d like to share please let us know so we can help
organise it. If we cant get it in the Journal then we will try our best
to get it into our web page. Please keep it in mind should you
attend anything you think might interest others, could be a show,
a Pony Club event, a trail ride or even just a great day out with
your Paint or visiting someone else’s Paint that you let us know.

✪ Youth report...
For all those youth who have been gathering enough points
together to qualify for the 2008 Paint Horse Youth Team, don’t
forget to thank mum and dad for there support and for all of those
miles they have done with you in the past 2 years, I am sure they
will be enjoying the break. I wish all of those who have qualified
the best of luck with the selection process it sure is an experience
of a life time.
The end of the show season also brings a time of change with it,
we say farewell to those older youth that have left us with there

Nationals, the new venue for the NSW State show and more recently the Qld
State show, I would like to congratulate all youth on their sportsmanship,
effort and dedication to this show season. It seems that as each year goes by
the competition within the youth takes a step further forward.

QLD STATE SHOW
review...

With the New South Wales State
Show and Grafton show all over it
wasn’t long before we all packed up
and headed for sunny state Qld for
the 2007 State Championships and
hopefully some warmer weather.
However we experienced what
seemed like some of the coldest
nights in the history of Caboolture,
but being the dedicated young youth
we are we braved the cold and we all
stayed to share the company of each
other and to compete at another
great QLD State show.
It was an action packed show that on some days
reached into the early hours of the night.The
SEQPHC held their annual Paint-O-Rama on the 19th
and 20th of July, with E Towill, J Serry and K
Holzberger judging a fantastic quality of competitors.
The State show then ran on the 21st and 22nd with
International Judge - Deanna Akin.
It certainly was a great show and Deanna helped the
youth out before and after classes telling them what
she was looking for and after the class what we could

but Sharyn Simpkin his new owner is very kind and lets me
still ride him at the big shows.

National Champion Leadline this year because Dad bought
me a skateboard to celebrate.
• WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR PAINT:
Not much at the moment because there aren’t many shows
but I’m learning to ride.
• WHAT IS YOUR MAIN GOAL WITH YOUR
CURRENT HORSE:
To ride HJ again this year.
• WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT PAINTS AS A BREED:
They are cool colours.
• WHAT ARE YOUR TRAINING SECRETS: Marie Farmer
taught my sister and I to keep the ice cream up – or
otherwise it will spill (referring to my hand holding the reins).
• FAVOURITE EVENT AND WHY:
Leadline because I get a new shirt with cool stuff on it
(like spiders or sharks) every year.
• WHAT EVENT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD
TO THIS COMING SEASON:
Hanging out with all the boys at the Nationals plus the Easter
Egg Hunt.

have improved on. It certainly made for a few laughs
and jokes in the arena and all of the youth enjoyed her
great sense of humour and her helpful advice. The
youth numbers were really great and spread out
between both age groups. It was great to see so many
smiling youth out there competing and having fun
showing with one another. Victoria Egan and Kristy
Trigg were just some of the Interstate Youth who had
travelled the distance to compete with all Queensland
youth, thanks for making the trip guys.

• YEARS INVOLVED WITH HORSES: My whole life.
• OTHER BREEDS YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH: Quarter Horses.
• PHAA OR CLUB INVOLVEMENT: Member of the PHAA and of
numerous other local clubs such as Maryborough, SEQPHA, Bundy,
Gunalda and Nanango.
There was also the annual entertainment night in the
hall, which had some great music and some even better
dancing by all who were there. Others watched on and
had a great laugh. There was also a great raffle run by
Helen Bentley which had some really great prizes, no
one went home empty handed. For the first time this
year we also had the Horsemans Trading Post come
and set a stand up along with Oz-West Saddlery,
Maureen Smith and a few other Saddlery shops. This
certainly gave the youth plenty of things to nag mum
and dad to buy for them over the weekend.
All in all the 2007 Qld State Show was another
success and all the youth had a great time with each
other and their horses. With the competition hotting
up I can’t wait to see what next year will bring.
• WHY DO YOU LOVE PAINT HORSES?: Because of their colour and how
their markings all differ. The QH bred paints have great temperaments.
• FAVOURITE SHOW OF THE YEAR: This year?.. Grafton because even
though Rose was sore she pulled through a performed well.
• FAVOURITE SHOW CLASS: I don’t think I can pick a favourite I just love
going out there and giving it my all.
• HOW MANY HORSES DO YOU OWN?: My family own’s 6. Leroy, Solo
and Buddy (my Warmblood) are mine.
• FAVOURITE HORSE EVER OWNED: Leroy, the horse I have now is
probably the easiest I’ve ever ridden so makes it a hard choice, but I’d
have to say overall is Eban Solo, it was slow process for me to work well
with her but the rewards of accomplishing something like that create an
incredible connection.
• NAME ONE PERSON YOU ADMIRE IN THE HORSE INDUSTRY: Can I
name 2? Jet and Denise Thompson, I like the way they get through to
horses and interpret their way of thinking.
• BEST MEMORY INVOLVING PAINT HORSES: winning Western Eq at
QLD State show this year, Rose got off to a rocky start but I controlled
her and stuck on.
• FAVOURITE TIME OF THE YEAR TO RIDE: I LOVE Spring! It’s not too
hot and not too cold and the days are just long enough to ride in the
mornings.
• FAVOURITE PLACE TO TRAIL RIDE: Around the Grafton show grounds,
it’s so picturesque there.
• IF YOU DIDN’T OWN HORSES WHAT WOULD YOU DO?: I love dancing
(Tap and Jazz), I also play the guitar and sing so possibly a performer of
some sort.
• FAVOURITE VACATION SPOT: Coffs Harbour.
• FUN FACT: I eat all of my food separate from each other.

NEW PHAA AFFILIATED
PAINT CLUB FORMED IN
TASMANIA
The Performance Paint Horse Association of Tasmania
(PHAT), recently affiliated with the Paint Horse Association
of Australia (PHAA), began in early July 2007 when a small
group of owners decided it was time to expand the Paint
Horse name and standing in the State and move forward
with the support and backing of the PHAA.
A meeting was held in Ross, Tasmania, where a way forward
was discussed and what it was believed members of a new
club would desire. In a very short period of time many Paint
Horse owners had made contact with the initial planning
committee relating many positive ideas on how to progress
with the fledgling Association.
The name "Performance Paint Horse Association of
Tasmania" was Registered on 30th July, 2007.
The main thrust of the new Association is not just about
‘showing’, but all about promoting the Paint Horse and
showcasing them to the general public and the qualities as a
breed with ability to do whatever you may choose.
The election for positions on the inaugural PHAT Committee
took take place in Ross on Saturday 11th August at 2:00pm.
There was a good turn up of people on the day keen to show
their support for the new club. It was particularly pleasing to
see many faces who had been “off air” for some time, proof
that the new club is what paint owners of Tasmania want.
We had a good array of clothing merchandise on sale, sporting
our distinctive logo with many of the new members taking
advantage to purchase caps, vests and polo tops to boost
much needed funds to the club for the various costs involved
in the formation of a such a venture.
Our next meeting to discuss arrangements for our Inaugural
State Show in 2008 will be on Friday September 21st at
7:00pm.
