Every year Palmer’s Environmental Steering Committee raffles
off environmentally friendly products to Palmer residents. This
year the low emission electric mower and various native plants
were highlighted. Native plants maintain the gene pool which
promotes hardiness, disease resistance and adaptability which, in
turn, means less maintenance for us!
Pictured from left to right: Campbell Davie, winner of the electric
mower; Lorraine Arnts, winner of the Hydrangea plant; and Valerie
The Auxiliary of the Children’s
Home of Easton
THANK YOU TO ALL OUR SPONSORS!
On behalf of the Palmer Township Athletic Association, we
would like to take this opportunity to thank the following
sponsors and families for their support & generous donations
for the 7th Annual Beef & Beer Fundraiser Dance.
The Ladies Auxiliary of The Children’s Home of Easton
announces the date for the 2010 Annual Pink Ball. The
Pink Ball is the area’s oldest charity ball, first held on April
18, 1917, at the City Guard Armory in Easton. Guests were
asked to wear pink, white and black, thus the name. Today,
the Pink Ball continues as the sole fund-raising event for
the Auxiliary. Proceeds of the evening benefit the Auxiliary
of The Children’s Home of Easton which goes back to the
children of the home for different activities throughout the
year. Because we are all volunteers, every penny raised goes
directly back to the children. Special events and activities
for the children include such things as pumpkin carving at
Halloween, bowling, go-carting, a day at the salon, etc. The
Auxiliary also provides birthday and graduation gifts for the
students, and presents for each unit at Christmas. Our goal
is to give the children of the Home a sense of belonging,
acceptance and family orientation.
Next year’s Pink Ball, which is a black tie optional affair,
will be held on February 20, 2010, at the Candlelight Inn in
Bethlehem. It will be an evening of dancing and socializing,
including entertainment, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and cash
bar.
We are asking that anyone wishing to be considered as a
corporate sponsor or anyone interested in having an invitation
sent to them, please contact the Auxiliary President,
Susanne Correia, at 610-653-1468 or send an email to
Suburban EMS Kicks Off Their Annual Subscription Plan For
Palmer Township Residents
Suburban Emergency Medical Services is proud to be your local not-for-profit
ambulance service provider and has serviced Palmer Township, Wilson Borough
and West Easton Borough for the past 56 years. As a reminder, Suburban
E.M.S.’s services are not funded by your tax dollars, including the local
services tax (also known as the LST).
During the fall of each year, Suburban E.M.S. offers a subscription program to
all residents in the communities they serve. The subscription plan works in
two ways to benefit our members. First, for all emergency (911 calls), we will
bill your insurance first and any co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance that you
are responsible for paying, will be written off up to $500.00 per call. Second,
for all non-covered medically necessary transports, we offer a discounted price.
Suburban has recently sent out their 2010 Palmer Township subscription form, so local residents should have received or
will be receiving their form in the near future. The subscription program and a donation program helps Suburban offset
the costs associated with funding the ambulances, building maintenance, medical equipment, and training of our volunteers
and staff.
With your help, Suburban E.M.S. is able to remain current with the latest, most advanced, pre-hospital emergency and
non-emergency medical transportation equipment in order to provide you with the utmost quality service at the lowest
cost possible to you. If you choose to offer a donation, Suburban E.M.S. is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation making your
donation tax deductible. Suburban E.M.S. appreciates any support and looks forward to serving you and your community
for years to come.
Citizens Advisory Committee - Should It Continue?
For many years, Palmer Township has had a Citizens Advisory Committee comprised of interested residents who like to
be involved in local matters of interest. From time to time there were issues which the Board of Supervisors felt needed
input from the citizens before they made a decision. These issues were discussed at Citizens Advisory Committee meetings,
and the result of the discussion passed on to the Board for their consideration. Also, speakers have been brought in
to talk about topics of both local and regional interest. They have ranged from the Police Chief, Fire Chief, speakers from
ProJeCt of Easton, The Children’s Home of Easton, Easton Hospital, Third Street Alliance and Majestic to mention a few.
Through the past years, the Committee attendance has dropped to very low levels while at the same time excellent
speakers with very worthwhile topics have presented very interesting programs. Because of the low attendance, the
Board of Supervisors needs to make a decision on whether to continue the Citizens Advisory Committee.
Before making a decision on the future of the Committee, the Board is interested in determining if more residents are
interested in joining the Committee. Meetings are normally held bi-monthly on a Monday evening in the Palmer Library.
Meetings are open to all residents of Palmer Township.
Please note this is not a meeting where any official action by township government is taken, but merely to inform committee
members on matters of interest in our community and to solicit their assistance from time to time on matters of
importance to our township.
If you would be interested in learning more about your community and wish to see the Citizens Advisory Committee
continue, please indicate your interest in joining the Committee by contacting us either by letter to Virginia S. Rickert,
Palmer Township Municipal Building, 3 Weller Place, Palmer, PA 18045, e-mail rickertv@cs.com or telephone 610-258-
2767.
Your comments and interest are very important to us and the future of the Committee.
fall, the members focus on “Giving” with the Club; and Palmer Kiwanis Foundation
awarding grants to various agencies and organizations who work with or care for
children in need. This year awards were granted to:
• Turning Point of Lehigh Valley – program for prevention of domestic violence
• The Children’s Home of Easton – Danjczek Family Center
• Third Street Alliance – children’s beds for family shelter
• Lehigh Valley Children’s Center – day care play equipment
• Easton Corps of The Salvation Army – children’s after school education program
• Minsi Trails Council of Boy Scouts of America – Scout environmental education program
• Northampton Community College - scholarship for a student in need endowment contribution
Cell Phones For Soldiers Continues
Due to the overwhelming success of this program, collection containers will
remain in place at the Palmer Municipal Building, the Palmer Library, and the
Charles Chrin Community Center through November 30.
More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families.
Cell Phones for Soldiers and Palmer’s Environmental Steering Committee are
asking you to support these brave men and women by donating your unused cell
phones.
Cell Phones for Soldiers was created by Brittany & Robbie Bergquist, from Norwell,
Massachusetts. After reading a story about a soldier who ran up a huge
phone bill calling home from Iraq, these two teenagers decided to help out. The
donated phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for
each phone – enough to provide an hour of prepaid calling cards for soldiers
abroad. Cell Phones For Soldiers is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
PALMER UTILITY BILL PAYMENT CHANGES…
Effective December 1, 2009, Palmer Township utility bills can no longer be paid
at Lafayette Ambassador Bank locations. The good news is, that beginning January
4, 2010, we will be using the services of “Official Payments;” and customers
will be able to pay their bills using an automated Debit or Credit Card payment
system. This change will allow you to pay on-line or by phone. Of course, you will
still be able to pay by mail or at the Palmer Township Municipal Building.
Detailed instructions on how to pay by Debit or Credit Card will be put on the
Palmer Township web-site (www.palmertwp.com) before the end of the year, and
all customers will also receive a letter on how the program will work. If you have
any questions, please call Val or Rose at 610-253-7191.
Changes are forthcoming when you file the 2009 earned income tax return. You will no longer be able to deduct the loss
from a business against W-2 income. However, you will be allowed to net schedules from self-employment income. This
change will now make the filing of your compensation the same for both the PA Dept. of Revenue and your local tax return.
