And the Winners are!
Once again this year, Palmer's Environmental Steering Committee raffled
off some beautiful native plants and an electric mower. Helena Frelak of
Berkley Street won the plants, and Ann Young of Broad Street was the
winner of the electric mower. The plants and mower are used to help the
committee educate our residents on the environmental benefits of these
items. Native plants provide a beautiful, hardy, drought resistant, low
maintenance landscape while also benefiting the environment. Electric
lawn mowers are environmentally friendly by reducing noise and air pollution,
and are convenient to use. Congratulations, ladies!
Suburban EMS Kicks Off Their Annual Subscription Plan For
Palmer Township Residents
Suburban Emergency Medical Services is proud to be your
local not-for-profit ambulance service provider and has serviced
Palmer Township, Wilson Borough and West Easton
Borough for the past 57 years. As a reminder, Suburban
E.M.S.’s services are not funded by your tax dollars, including
the local services tax (also known as the LST).
During the fall of each year, Suburban E.M.S. offers a subscription
program to all residents in the communities they
serve. The subscription plan works in two ways to benefit
our members. First, for all emergency (911 calls), we will
bill your insurance first; and any co-pays, deductibles and
co-insurance that you are responsible for paying, will be
written off up to $500.00 per call. Second, for all non-covered medically necessary transports we offer a
discounted price.
Suburban has recently sent out their 2011 Palmer Township subscription form, so local residents should have
received or will be receiving their form in the near future. The subscription program and a donation program
helps Suburban offset the costs associated with funding the ambulances, building maintenance, medical equipment,
and training of our volunteers and staff.
With your help, Suburban E.M.S. is able to remain current with the latest, most advanced, pre-hospital emergency
and non-emergency medical transportation equipment in order to provide you with the utmost quality
service at the lowest cost possible to you. If you choose to offer a donation, Suburban E.M.S. is a non-profit
501(c)3 corporation making your donation tax deductible. Suburban E.M.S. appreciates any support and looks
forward to serving you and your community for years to come.
Palmer Township First Responders Highlight 9/11
Remembrance at Embassy Bank
With the Palmer Fire Department's extension ladder towering
more than 100 feet into a clear blue sky, Old Glory
was slowly raised aloft while neighbors joined local police,
firefighters and EMS professionals in a stirring, solemn
recital of the American Pledge of Allegiance.
Such was the patriotic spirit shared by all at the "9/11:
Never Forget" memorial event held in Palmer Township
on Saturday, September 11, 2010, and hosted at the new
Embassy Bank location on Corriere Road.
Highlights of the event included lifesaving vehicles,
equipment and personnel appearances by the Colonial
Regional Police Department, Suburban EMS, Hecktown
Fire Department, Hecktown Ambulance Company and
the Palmer Fire Department. Families were provided with
free fingerprint registration for children and other safety
education services. The event was broadcast live from
Palmer Township to the entire Lehigh Valley on radio
station CAT Country with DJ personality Sam Malone
interviewing first responders from our home community.
Free refreshments were provided to all attendees, courtesy
of Embassy Bank and Diner 248.
"We appreciate the turnout for this community remembrance
of September 11 and the support of our Palmer
Township first responders today and every day throughout
the year," said Dave Lobach, Embassy Bank President &
CEO. "We believe the victims and heroes of that tragic
day occupy an important place in American history. Those
souls and the lessons learned from that experience should
never be forgotten. Community gatherings like today's
ensure they never will be."
Kiwanis Club of Palmer Township
One of the pleasures of being a Kiwanian is that we can give
back to our community through our giving programs. To do this,
we raise money through our annual golf outing in the summer,
our rose sale in the fall, and our breakfast in the spring. This
time of the year, the Kiwanis Club of Palmer Township, through
the Foundation and the Club, make donations to a number of
local agencies and organizations which include:
• Salvation Army - $500.00 towards their Learning Zone
Program, which is an after school program for children from
low income homes.
• The Children’s Home of Easton - $500.00 to support the
Emergency Shelter Program for children.
• Third Street Alliance - $500.00 for a portable washing sink
for preschool classroom in the Learning Center.
for The Third Street Alliance.
• Lehigh Valley Children’s Center - $400.00 to cover the cost of painting 2 to 3 childhood classrooms.
• ProJect of Easton - $750.00 for their Sizzle Program, which provides a free summer literacy day camp for at
and book talks, we would like to thank the
businesses in our community that helped make this
year’s program so enjoyable for our children as well
as all the volunteers that helped us throughout a
very busy summer. It is the generosity and support
of our community that helps make our summer reading
Library Information You May Not Know…
State public library funding has taken another hit
in the 2010-2011 budget. After sustaining a 20%
decrease in last year’s budget, public libraries must
now deal with another 9% cut in the 2010-2011
state appropriation.
How will this affect you as an Easton Area Public
Library patron? We’re just beginning to consider
cuts, but a few have been decided. One is in the
number of copies of new best sellers purchased. You
10 T O D A Y ’ S P A L M E R Fall 2010
may have to wait longer to get a copy of the new
James Patterson or Danielle Steel novel. Another
change will be in obtaining materials for our patrons
from other libraries through interlibrary loan (ILL).
When we request materials from libraries outside
the area, we must pay postage to get the items and
then again to return them. In an effort to reduce
spending, it will be necessary to place restrictions on
fulfilling ILL requests.
What can you do now?
Be an active Library advocate. Tell your friends and
neighbors about the Library and its services.
Donate to the Library. There are many ways. Our
Buy-a-Book program is a wonderful way to honor a
loved one or commemorate a special occasion while
building the Library’s holdings. You can dedicate a
book, DVD, magazine subscription (anything the
Library lends) to a friend or relative. Give us your
gently used books and media. Current titles are often
added to the circulating collection, and many donations
replace our worn items. The remaining items
stock our fundraising book sales held in June and
December. Monetary donations are always welcome.
Your tax-deductible gift can be put to use immediately.
We’re just beginning to look at ways to absorb the
9% reduction. Be assured we will do our best to
maintain the services and programs you expect and
enjoy, but some changes will have to be made. If you
have any questions or comments, contact the Library
Director Jennifer Stocker at 610-258-2917 ext. 310.
ZUMBA GOLD
The Zumba Gold Fitness program is second to none. It is an innovative,
fun and exciting program. It was designed for the active
older adult, the true beginner, and/or people who are not used
to exercising, or people who may be limited physically. The main
difference between Zumba Gold and Zumba Basic is Zumba Gold is
done at a lower intensity, not as fast, but it certainly is as fun. The
same great Latin styles of music and dance are used.
This amazing program is very easy to follow so anyone at any age will be able to do Zumba Gold. Dances that are specifically
highlighted in this program include the Merengue, Salsa Cha Cha, Cumbia, Salsa, Rock & Roll (including Twist and Charleston),
Belly Dance, Flamenco, and Tango.
Mondays: 10:30 a.m.-11:15 a.m.
ZUMBA TONING
Zumba Toning takes the original Zumba dance-fitness class to the next level utilizing an innovative muscle training protocol
and the addition of light weight toning sticks or dumbbells. Created to emphasize muscle work along with rhythms, this
combination of cardio and dynamic resistive exercises is an effective use of progressive light weight training to improve overall
performance. This Latin-inspired dance ‘n tone program also includes, for the first time, combination rhythms within the
same songs which adds to the fun and flavor: Latin Disco, Reggaeton-Cumbia, Conga Hip-Hop, Merengue Hip-Hop, Reggaton-Belly
Dance, Techno and Salsa. This program is assured to provide the participant with a safe and effective, re-defining
total body workout! Zumba Toning creates the same party atmosphere as every other Zumba program because the rhythm of
the dance is the passion and foundation which keeps the participant engaged and coming back. Zumba Toning is fun, different,
challenging and effective and provides, for the participant, a new avenue to weighted activity.
Tuesdays: 10:30 a.m.-11:20 a.m.
