News from the
Parish Pump
A BUSY three months is reflected in this, our eighth edition of La
Cloche, which is bursting with photographs and news of parish
events. The editorial team are always on the lookout for news,
events and particularly for photographs of what is going on in the
parish, so do, please send in items for publication to Elaine
Hanning at hanning@psilink.co.je
THE front cover picture was taken by Bob Olliver, secretary of the
St Saviour Twinning Association, and it shows the St
Saviour-Villedieu team on the beach at Granville for the bienniel
twinning games, the Jeux Intervilles.
LA Cloche congratulates our lively Twinning Games team of
Ashley Brock, Rebecca Morris, Stephanie De Sousa, Ryan Powell,
Jordan Brown, Ben Gurney and team manager Jordan Etienne. You
may not have come home covered in glory, but you were great
representatives of our parish and we look forward to seeing you
again at the games in St Brelade in 2012.
GRANVILLE is twinned with St Brelade and is a fairly recent
twinning, but all credit must go to the chairman of the Granville
committee, Jean-Paul Grosse and his team for such a successful
event. Special St Saviour thanks go also to Jean-Paul’s wife, Sue
Ingram, for her help with translations and explanations. Thank you,
Sue, and huge thanks to Paulo.
AS we go to press, representatives of the St Saviour in Bloom
committee are making their way to Birmingham for the awards
ceremony of the 2010 Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in
Bloom competition. Delegates from more than 40 villages, towns
and cities the length and breadth of the British Islands come
together to hear the results of the judging in their category. Jersey
has an honourable record in these awards and we are hoping for a
good result. Our thoughts are also with Grouville who are finalists
in the Champion of Champions category and La Cloche wishes
CHRISTMAS is coming, and to prove it, here is a beautiful
picture of St Saviour’s church in the snow by parishioner Shelagh
Marett. It has been chosen as one of the 2010 selection offered by
Jersey Hospice Care to raise funds for this very worthwhile Island
charity. Jersey hospice care Christmas card. Shelagh is a keen
amateur photographer and had been waiting a long time to take
some photographs of Jersey in the snow, having lived here for 30
years and in St Saviour for twelve. This year, the snow fell on a
Friday night, so early Saturday morning she and her husband
walked up to St Saviour’s Church to take some photographs
before the snow was disturbed by anyone.
‘I have been producing a Christmas card for myself over the years,
always a photograph of somewhere local, for example, Rocco
Tower with the sun going down, Corbière lighthouse and Gorey
Castle, but had never linked up with a charity before, she said.
‘When I saw the advert about Jersey Hospice looking for ideas for
their Christmas cards, I sent the photograph in straight away as I
wanted to help.’
There are, not surprisingly, very few photographs of St Saviour in
the snow, and this one is so full of serenity and peace it is sure to
become a parish favourite.
D-DAY is also coming! Digital television switchover happens
in Jersey on 17 November this year. That’s when the analogue
TV system will be switched off forever and, for the first time,
everyone in the Channel Islands will be able to receive
multi-channel digital TV. Bill Taylor, the Channel Islands
regional manager for Digital UK, says: ‘Don’t worry about
switchover. More than a quarter of the UK population has
already made the switch and everything has gone smoothly.
Research shows that the vast majority of people like
multi-channel digital TV.’
Here is a quick Top Ten guide to the essentials of digital
switchover.
1. If you have satellite TV, do nothing. It’s already digital.
2. If you have cable TV, talk to your cable provider.
3. If you have any television that receives its signal through an
aerial, you must get ready to receive Freeview from 17
November.
4. No one needs a new television. A Freeview box costing on
average £30 will let your existing analogue TV receive a
digital signal.
5. If you already have a flat-screen television with a digital
tuner built in, you don’t need a separate digital box: just
tune in the TV on switchover day.
6. Most people won’t need a new aerial. The golden rule is –
if you receive a good analogue picture now, your existing
aerial will almost certainly receive Freeview. If you are a
tenant, talk to your landlord.
7. After switchover, your analogue video recorder will be
extremely limited in what it can do. You may want to buy a
new digital TV recorder.
8. Radio is not affected by digital TV switchover. Your FM
radio will continue working.
9. For more information, visit
10.Older and disabled people can receive help from the
Switchover Help Scheme. If you are eligible, you should
have received an information pack in the post. For more
As the magazine is published, the announcement of
where St Saviour has come in the finals of Britain in
Bloom is due to be announced.
ST SAVIOUR, classified as a ‘town’ in the prestigious Britain in
Bloom competition is pitted against five other top towns from the
British regions – the City of London; Cupar, Scotland; Douglas,
Isle of Man; Halstead, Anglia and Wetherby, in Yorkshire. We wish
St Saviour the best of results, while accepting that the standard
is almost impossibly high and to achieve a gold medal would be a
huge achievement for the parish.
The St Saviour committee headed by Connétable Peter Hanning
and organised by floral co-ordinator Graham Langlois, with Mary
Le Brocq, Betty Le Quesne, Francis Ozouf, John Hidrio, and
Elaine Hanning, Nance Hicklin and Jean Roche were thrilled to
win the best Parish in Bloom and Best Parish Hall awards in
Tourism’s Parish in
Bloom competition.
Not only does this give
the parish entry into
the 2011 UK finals,
but the comment from
the judges that the
parishes had been
judged to the ‘Britain in Bloom gold standard’ was a huge boost
to their confidence when presenting the parish to the Britain in
Bloom judges a couple of weeks later.
We, at La Cloche may be biased, but more than a few
parishioners commented that they had never seen the parish and
parish hall look so good and the committee were delighted to
learn that one of the judges saw his very first red squirrel
prancing on the lawn at Government House.
None of the parish achievements would be possible without the
hardworking Parish in Bloom committee, parish foreman Peter
Jacklin and his staff and the volunteers who have taken on parish
projects such as the woodland at Jardin des Buttes.
Whatever the actual results of Britain in Bloom, St Saviour’s
parish is the winner as parishioners enjoy the beauty of our
parish garden troughs and tubs. And we get to have another go
next year!
Meet our floral
co-ordinator
By Daff Noël
BEFORE I began working on our
magazine I must admit that – along with
many more of our readers I suspect – I
was not aware of the amount of voluntary
work that took place in the parish. I’m
afraid I am also guilty of taking the hours
of dedication involved in events such as
entering a float in the Battle of Flowers or
the Parish in Bloom entirely for granted. I
admired the results greatly but never gave
a thought to the people responsible. One of those people is
Graham Langlois.
Graham was a dustman in the parish for 19 years before taking
his HGV licence to become a road cleaner. He continued to work
on the roads until his retirement two years ago.
How did you get involved in the Parish Floral displays?
I just happened to be up at the Parish Hall one day in 1989 and
commented that de-heading needed doing on the blooms and
before I knew it I was assigned the job. That year the parish won
gold for the Best Parish in Flower and was a Britain in Bloom
finalist. From then on I was hooked. I found ideas for design
forming in my head. I began with yellow as the main colour but
got nowhere until one of the judges dropped the clue that a
variety of pinks look best on a granite
background. After that I never looked
back. I even found myself working out
a route the judges might follow.
Are you a natural gardener?
Well the ideas come naturally but I
was taught a lot by Bob Kearsey, the
manager up at the Parks and Gardens
Department. We meet up at the end of
the summer to discuss the good and
bad points of the displays and any
changes that need to be made. The
staff at Parks and Gardens then seed
up so that the plants can be put out
around the second week of June.
The Parish Secretary, Mike Mallet, has always been very
helpful too in agreeing to my suggestions of added pieces to
the overall display, for which I renovate the containers every
year.
When did you become Floral Co-ordinator?
In 1994. One year I was also judge for Tourism around the
Island. One of the main projects I am very pleased with is the
woodlands. It took me two years to get it off the ground.
Another is the Schools’ Painting Competition, which started
in 2002 and is still going strong.
That must take up a lot of your time, do you have
other interests?
I’ve been a Standard Bearer for my old regiment, The Royal
Hampshire, since 1989 and besides family history I’m a very
keen photographer. When the Archives wanted local
photographs for every day of the Millenium I went in to
several parish establishments including schools and even
Government House where I was permitted to follow the staff
and photograph them going about their duties.
You were treated for cancer last year, can we talk
about that?
Yes, it was in the prostate and I underwent two months of
radiotherapy. As we were out of the Island, my wife and I
made a bit of a holiday of it, taking the bus out to explore the
surrounding towns each day after the treatment.
That’s sounds like a very positive attitude to take.
Well I am very positive. Everyone involved was so very good,
doctors, hospital staff here and away. The support of my
family too has
been a major
factor in my
recovery.
Good on
you Graham
and bravo to
Fete-full day
Parish’s first Master
Saviour chosen
IT was a big occasion when the day of the St Saviour Battle of
Flowers Association fete dawned bright and hot on Saturday, 3
July. The highlight of the annual fund-raising event for the
association was to be a new competition – for
the first time, St Saviour would
not only have a Miss St
Saviour to represent the
parish, but a Master and
Junior Miss St Saviour to
represent the children
and young people of the
parish.
The event was opened
by Mrs Ridgway, wife of
A day to remember
The Battle of Britain began on a wet
and cloudy day in September 1940
THE everyday quality, the
nothing-much-out-of-the-ord
inariness of exactly 70
years ago, was recalled for
those present at the annual
RAFA Battle of Britain
Service of Thanksgiving and
Rededication by Martin
Willing, chairman of the
RAFA (Jersey branch) who
read a report of 12
September, 1940. The
young pilots little knew that
they had turned to a blank
page of history on which
their names would be
written: The Few.
After the service of
REMEMBRANCE Day is fast
approaching and parishes in Jersey are promoting new initiatives
to supplement the traditional door-to-door sales. We in St
Saviour wish to be to the fore, especially as the toll of casualties
continues unabated. As we are privileged to have in our parish,
Highlands College, the opportunity arises to involve young
persons of a similar age to many who are fighting for our peace,
protection and honour in Afghanistan today. There is great
enthusiasm by the students to be involved.
The occasion will take place on Tuesday 9 November, in the
form of a Remembrance Luncheon, in the Highlands Academy
Restaurant, with His Excellency the Lieut.-Governor,
Lieut-General Andrew Ridgway and Mrs Ridgway, Connétable
Peter Hanning and Mrs Hanning as well as some very special
and honoured guests – Chelsea Pensioners – in attendance.
The lunch has been organised by Frank Falle, Poppy Appeal
organiser for St Saviour, who said of the choice of a lunch as a
fundraiser for the Poppy Appeal; ‘That “an army marches on its
stomach”, conveys in equal measure, the indispensable
contribution of the cook in every fighting unit!’
There will be a three-course menu, including a 'war time
pudding', the winner of a competition devised by the students
and judged by Mrs Ridgway. Numbers are limited by the size of
the dining room and the ambience of the lunch will be formal and
reflect a military occasion.
It is the Constable's wish that as this is a St Saviour's Parish
and Highlands College initiative, seats for the occasion should
first be offered to parishioners and staff of the college and
invitations are available through the Parish Hall. The cost of £50
per head will cover the lunch, with the majority going as a
contribution to the Royal British Legion's Poppy Appeal,
including the amount usually given to the catering students, who
provide the meal and wait at table, which they have willingly
agreed to donate.
House to house collection
THE poppy boxes and tins will be available at the Parish Hall at
our usual afternoon tea party for helpers on Wednesday, 27
October. The door-to-door collections are from Friday 29th
October to Friday 5 November.
JERSEY’S Sea Cadets and Marines took to the Island’s
for charity.
Sent on their way by the Lieut-Governor, Lieut-General
Andrew Ridgway, with the Connétable of St Saviour and the
chairman of Help a Jersey Child, Robin Rumboll, the young
people were aiming to get round the Island in shifts supported
by the rest of the group travelling in the two big Sea Cadet
coaches.
The gun-pull traditionally begins at St Saviour’s Parish Hall
and the team were led through the parish by the Honorary
charity none of the money raised goes on administration costs.
Every penny they receive is directed towards the needs of
local children.
As they travel around the Island, the cadets will also be
shaking buckets and raising money for their chosen charity.
Lifelong homes for senior citizens
Plans are going ahead for the parish’s first
homes for senior citizens despite the recent
sale of the site to another developer
FOUR fields which border Patier Road, Chasse Brunet and St
Saviour’s Hill, then owned by George Carter and earmarked for
the parish’s first foray into
homes for the elderly,
were part of the States
rezoning of agricultural
and horticultural land in
2008, when it was stated
that there were 50 St
Saviour parishioners in
need of lifelong homes.
Some of these would be
downsizing and releasing
larger properties to
Housing.
More recently, Mr Carter
has sold the land to
Dandara and it has been
with considerable relief that we hear that Dandara are honouring
the commitments made by Mr Carter, although the mooted plan
for a closed dementia unit has been dropped.
There has long been a need for lifelong homes in the parish for
our older residents because, as Connétable Peter Hanning
pointed out: ‘There is no parish residential home or sheltered
accommodation or social rental homes for senior citizens in St
Saviour.’
Dandara have already met to discuss the project with the
Connétable and applications and plans are in the making. It is
perhaps not surprising also to hear that although the homes are
planned to be built next year, Dandara have already received
queries and requests from parishioners.
Of the social housing units to be 6 built on the site, Mr Carter had
agreed to give the parish 30 of them and the Connétable was
pleased to have this commitment honoured by Martin Clancy,
Dandara’s managing director, at a recent meeting.
Mr Hanning explained that the homes, which are worth a great
deal of money, would enable the parish to provide help for
elderly people in the parish. There are also some extra benefits
attached to the plans – extra garden areas for some residents
living along the edge of the development, off-road parking and
more pavements as well as a pull-in bus stop to provide safe
access on St Saviour’s Hill.
At a meeting at the Parish Hall to view the plans, before 5 the
rezoning, many parishioners were very supportive of the idea,
especially as it is a low-density scheme, but the Connétable has
also warned that he does not want to see any more building in
the countryside beyond Five Oaks. Traffic has been voiced as a
problem in this area in the face of the new development but the
Connétable is convinced that because it is senior citizen
housing, it will have little impact on the daily commuter traffic.
Although a waiting list for social housing on the site will not be
opened until a much later date, Planning’s criteria insists on a
minimum of 45 per cent of social housing, of which the 30
houses gifted to the parish will be a part. Discussions are now
Jersey Evening Post
being held between the Connétable and Minister for Housing
Sean Power on how the remainder of the social housing will be
organised and administered.
Dandara will be submitting their
application to the Planning Department at
the end of November and, if successful,
they will aim to start work next spring.
The new plans include more sheltered
homes in place of the original dementia
unit and there will also be a total of 80
cottages and 40 apartments for sale on
the open market. Plans also include a
village community hall, an exercise facility,
tea room, hair salon, snooker room,
library, doctor’s surgery, office and kiosk.
Based on site will be a receptionist and
warden and the residents will have the
benefit of a security alarm system.
‘Imagine a series of cottages with their own conservatories, and
apartments with balconies in courtyards, with herb gardens,
potting sheds and dovecotes’, that is what is envisioned by
Dandara, according to Mr Clancy.

The group spent a marvellous day with their St Saviour
friends, including a joint trip of 60 Jersey and French children
to Durell as guests of St Saviour’s Parish who also provided
a healthy lunch at the Café Dodo, where the children were
Miss St Saviour participates
in Villedieu’s Fourth of July Parade Americaine
THE Flower festival in Villedieu Les Poëles is
held only once every four years, so it is a huge
event for our twin more than a quarter of a
century. Miss St Saviour, Ashley Brock, her
family, Connétable of St Saviour Peter Hanning
and the St Saviour delegation were greeted as
old friends in this old Normandy town by the
Mayor, Daniel Macé; the newly-elected Reine
de Villedieu, Maud Laine, and her two
princesses, Dauphines Charlotte Stephens and
Marlène Eury.
The town was ablaze with red, white and blue
as the Parade Americaine took to the streets of
this ancient town. Cowboys and cowgirls
jostled with jazz singers, gold prospectors and
Al Capone to create an exciting mix of the Wild
West and New Orleans while non-stop jazz
played out over the town.
It was a fun-packed weekend with something
for everyone, ending with a magnificent firework display over the town.
Friendships renewed at Jumelage dinner
A MAJOR part of any visit to our twin town of Villedieu is the
generous hospitality offered by our hosts and this occasion was no
exception to that rule with dinners, lunches and a vin d’honneur. The St
Saviour Twinning Association is a thriving group that meets quarterly
for lunch and arranges trips to Normandy
events. The next outing is a sell-out day trip by
ferry and coach to Avranches for lunch (sadly,
it is too far from the St Malo ferry to get to
Villedieu this time). A party of 50 parishioners
and friends will enjoy an all-inclusive day out to
include lunch at the Hotel de la Croix d’Or in
Avranches and a visit to the hypermarket in the
hypermarket in 6bSt Malo before they return home.
More visits to France are planned and the association also plan to
invite their French counterparts to visit Jersey again. Anyone who
would like to know more about the St Saviour Twinning Association,
would like to take part in any of the activities or offer hospitality to our
French cousins as guests in their home, should contact Elaine Hanning
(telephone 723850 or email hanning@psilink.co.je) in the first instance
as she is compiling an interests list for the St Saviour Twinning
Find new Friends at local meeting house
'I CAME to Quakers in my early thirties having been
brought up in another denomination and then 'given up' on
any regular church attendance,’ explains St Saviour
parishioner Elizabeth Jelley.
She enjoys the Quaker form of silent worship – the
coming together of individuals into a group to listen to,
contemplate and ‘know one another in that which is
eternal’ as George Fox, founder of the Religious Society of
Friends, described it.
She also appreciates the outlook of Friends, as they are
also known, that is inclusive and non-judgemental.
‘People generally recognise us for our Peace testimony,
but we also try to live out the testimonies of simplicity and
equality and concern for the environment,’ she said. ‘I
think, I hope, that this local group of Quakers which
sustains me also informs my daily life and interaction with
others.'
Local artist creates iconic image
of St Saviour
Artists and
iconographer
Karen Blampied
has set herself
the task of
creating a
traditional icon to
represent each
of the parishes
and its church
and in November
it will be the turn
of St Saviour
ICONS are more usually associated with Eastern Orthodox Christianity, but Karen
Blampied, who initially trained as an art teacher, became inspired by icons while studying
pastoral theology at Heythrop College in London.
‘My studies at Leuven University for a master’s degree in religious studies encouraged me
to look at religious art from a wider perspective, but for me, the orthodox icon offers a
profound way in which to express my Christian faith,’ she said.
She also uses iconography in the classroom as a way to study the Christian religion. ‘The
whole process of writing an icon is a theological journey, from the bare wood of the
crucifixion to the luminous colours of the resurrection,’ she said.
Karen, who is a member of the British Association of Iconographers, explains that the 12
Parish Saints are so much part of Jersey’s heritage that their names are an integral part of
our Island’s past and present, its community boundaries and identity.
The patron saints provide a combination of story, legend and historical facts that weave an
intriguing community story and identity for the island of Jersey.
Within the icon tradition, the Saviour can be represented in many ways, each giving an
insight into Christian belief about the Saviour.
‘My challenge was to interpret all these statements of belief into a single icon that
expressed St Saviour de Jersey with the parish crest depicting the crown of thorns and
nails,’ she said. ‘I chose to represent the Saviour as Pantocrator, the seat of wisdom.
Here the Saviour is seated on a throne holding in his left hand the scriptures and his right
hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. ‘The finished icon will be 52cm X 42cm made out
of recycled wood, a pew from Holy Trinity church. All natural materials have been used to
write the icon, each having a theological meaning.
To find out more, please visit St Saviour’s Church during the week of the 15 -20
November where Karen will be artist in residence and happy to share her work on the icon
of Saint Saviour.
Her work can also be followed on her website, www.iconspirit.com or on Facebook.
Bouônjour
bouonnes gens
I've often said that learning Jèrriais can help you to
understand the Island better, and in this article, I
thought I would explain why. I'm going to look at the
names of places around the parish, some of which
have changed to English or which are written in
“official” French; all have Jèrriais at their root.
In no order of preference, we kick off Sous la Hougue. Sous
means under or below, and la Hougue not surprisingly refers
to La Hougue Bie. A hougue is a mound in which the ground
is always rocky, so very often refers to a neolithic
burial-place. According to the book Jersey Place Names
there are at least 144 hougues around the island; the word
itself is thought to come from Norse and is an example of
the Viking influence. The same word may be the origin of the
English word hoe as in Plymouth Hoe. La Hougue Bie itself
is just outside our parish – there are two theories about the
Bie part – it may refer to Hambye in Normandy, connected
with the legend of the St. Lawrence dragon, or it may be the
Norse byr which meant an abode or village.
Bagot was a family name which appears as Baggod, de
Bagod and de Bagot – the family has disappeared but their
name lives on. A family which still exists gave its name to
Pinnieaux (written officially as Pigneaux) which is the plural
of the Pinné or Pinel family, who must have been numerous
here at some time in the past though there are few of them
in the parish today. Longueville may also have a family
association, as almost all the -villes begin with a surname.
There's some debate about
how Maûfant got its name – it
may mean “bad mud” referring
to the waterlogging of the
area in winter, or else “bad
smell” which is nothing to do with the odour of silage that
sometimes wafts around the area! The name of Les Vathinnes also
tells us that at Les Varines the land is heavy and often humid – and
even now in winter it can be a muddy lane.
The road to the water-meadows is the English translation of La Rue
des Prés, and in the same part of the parish you will find Lé Pliat
Doue or Plat Douet, the Flat Stream, which meandered along
through the meadows. Where Brookhill estate now stands was Lé
Doue dé Pithot, the Goose Pond – a doue can also be a pond if it
has water flowing in and out of it.
To finish, we'll head down to our parish beach at Le Dicq – we have
so little you could miss it! Lé Di refers to an excavated channel and
embankment or dyke that resulted from digging it out. The land
behind is below sea-level, and there were often problems with water
in the surrounding area. Apparently there were at least three
megalithic stones here – perhaps neolithic man thought he needed
to make a mark on our seaside!
I hope you found that interesting!
THE pupils in the First Aid Club at Grainville School have
excelled themselves in both local and National Competitions
this year.
Initially two teams made up of ten members competed
against local teams from JCG and Les Quénnevais, treating
casualties in a scenario, in pairs and foursomes before
answering questions on a first aid topic.
The outstanding Grainville teams then came both first and
second against much more experienced teams in Guernsey,
the winning team being Sophie Rolland, Jahmahl Brady,
Lorraine Murray, Amelia Van Der Vliet and Brandon Ahier
with Jasmine Beaumont, Emma Crossley, Jade Beaumont,
Amie Townsend and Liam Correia as runners-up.
With the winning team’s score of 206 out of 219 against
Guernsey’s winning team’s score of 201, Grainville became
the delighted Channel Island winners.
The winning team then went on to London on 22 of June to
compete in the National Schools First Aid Competition held
at the Natural Museum, for which they were fortunate in
gaining sponsorship for travel and accommodation from
Domion. They also made and sold cakes to cover additional
costs.
Grainville’s comparatively novice team was now competing
against 13 teams from all over Britain, with many of the rival
pupils being both older and more experienced.
The tests, dealing with electric shock, broken ankle, head
injury, severe bleeding and broken jaw really stretched the
team members, yet Grainville worked through to be placed
fifth, just six points away from third place.
Individually, the youngest competitor of the day Brandon
Ahier deserves a huge commendation for winning the
highest marks for his test in the Reserves Competition and
to tutor Dani Bouchard and all the pupils who took part, a
big Bravo! Everyone.
Glanville celebrates 150
years in Royal style
Sunshine and
smiles at
residential home’s
celebration
Glanville is a residential
Home which cares only for
ladies, continuing a charitable
decision made 150 years ago
to provide care and comfort for elderly women in their
declining years.
It all began in 1857. Two elderly ladies felt that they must help
a poor, blind woman living in St Helier. Several other women
were also found to need help and in the summer of 1859 a
house was opened for the care of these aged and infirm
women. The official title was, and still is, the Home for Infirm
and Aged Women, but nowadays it is better known as
Glanville.
In 1884, Regent Villa, Regent Road was purchased and over
the years many improvements were made. A house named
Roxmead was left to the Home and in 1963 it was sold and
the money put towards buying Glanville in St. Mark’s Road.
The Home is a registered charity, with donations and
fund-raising events supplementing the low fees paid by the
25 residents. Although it is run on a day to day basis by an
excellent manager, overall responsibility lies with a small
voluntary committee.
Each lady has her own en-suite room, and there are two
beautiful lounges with a separate dining room and lovely
The building requires continued maintenance and
improvements, and in the 150th Anniversary year
it is planned to provide a new conservatory for the ladies,
where they can sit and relax enjoying the view of the garden.
To the delight of all concerned, the Earl and Countess of
Wessex, agreed to visit during their planned stay in Jersey in
June. Finally the day arrived and the weather was fine and
sunny, but not too hot. The residents looked their best and
were all ready when the Earl and Countess arrived at Glanville
to be welcomed by Connétable of St Saviour Peter Hanning,
and introduced to Vince Roberts, hon. treasurer of Glanville; Jill
Norman, vice president and Philippa Romeril, President.
The Earl and Countess were escorted into the lounges where
they met and talked to residents, including Miss Elsie Luce and
Mrs Florence Allenet who both celebrated their 100th
birthdays in 2009. The Royal couple were then taken out into
the garden where they were introduced to some of the Home’s
benefactors and talked to staff, committee members and
guests. Before they left they signed the visitors’ book and
unveiled a plaque marking this very special
year in the history of the Home.
Guests were then served afternoon tea in
