January 2010 • Tevet/Shevat 5770
Dear Rabbi Skoff,
Why does Judaism seem to be so
focused on insignificant details? When to
bow during services, avoiding money
on the Sabbath, putting pebbles on a
gravestone, all those prayers at the
Seder! It seems to me that we miss the
big picture by obsessing over such
non-critical items. Are these kinds of
trivialities really what Judaism is all
about? By the way, I sent you this
question a week ago and have not heard
back from you. Are you avoiding me?
Sincerely,
M
Dear M,
Don’t worry, I am not avoiding you.
In fact, I did answer your question,
and I sent you a reply immediately. If
you did not receive it, then that itself is
the answer to your question. You see, I
sent you a reply, but when I wrote you
back to your email address on YAHOO,
I left out the dot before the “com”. I
wrote to you at “yahoocom” instead of
at “yahoo.com.” You still should have
received the email, because after all, it is
only one little dot missing. I mean, come
on, one little dot is so insignificant, it
is not as if I wrote the wrong name!
Why would something so trivial prevent
you from receiving my email? Isn’t it a
From My Study
A LETTER FROM RABBI SKOFF
bit ridiculous that you did not get my
email because of a little dot?
No, actually, it is not ridiculous.
Because the dot is not just a dot. It
represents something. The dot has
significance far beyond what I
understand. It may seem to me to be
trivial, but that is simply because I do
not fully understand how the Web works.
All I know is that with the dot, my
message reaches the correct destination;
without it the message is lost.
Finding significance in living a
Jewish life is a lot like the dots. The
details of Jewish practices and customs
contain a great deal of meaning and
depth. Every detail, if properly
understood and practiced, can be
relevant to our lives and the lives of
others. In other words, every dot counts!
If you want to know more about the
importance of the dots on the web,
study computers. If you want to know
more about the importance of Jewish
customs and practices, come see me.
I would love to help you connect the
dots so that they will be more
meaningful to you. And remember, at
Park Synagogue, every congregant is
on his/her own unique journey, and,
every journey counts, no journey is
insignificant. See you in Shul.
Sincerely,
Rabbi Skoff
Garinim – Like tiny seeds, we must carefully tend to our youngest students.
Nitzanim – These children are like the buds on a tree, just beginning to
A S Y N A G O G U E F O R A L I F E T I M E
PARK
PRESCHOOL
CORNER
with Morah Kimmy
Every Friday at Park Preschool, the entire school
gets together for Kabbalat Shabbat, a celebration to
greet Shabbat. It’s the one thing that brings our
entire school together on a regular basis and, by far
my favorite 20 minutes of the entire week. Imagine if
you will, the very first Friday of the school year. There
are 80 to 90 little children still tentative about coming
to school without Mom or Dad. They are just starting
to feel comfortable with their teachers and friends
and beginning to understand the routines in their
preschool classrooms. Out of the blue, the teachers
walk all the children to the front foyer. There they see
all these strange adults (the other teachers) and
unfamiliar children and someone called Morah
Kimmy standing behind a very big piano. Sounds
frightening, don’t you think?
But then I put on my Bim and Bam puppet friends
and quietly begin singing. Soon the older children
join in, remembering the song from last year. Before
the first verse is over, Bim and Bam have put everyone
at ease and the room fills with song and joy. No one
is scared, and to watch, you would never know this
was the first week of school.
That’s the feeling that Shabbat instills in us. It’s a
special time for friends and family to enjoy each
other’s company, sing, dance and be thankful for the
time together. And it’s a special time for us at Park
Preschool. While ‘what happens in the classroom stays
in the classroom’, what happens at Shabbat is shared
by all. We have a diverse
group of preschoolers and
families and yet, while
spending this special time
together, we become one
big peaceful and happy
family. If you’re ever in the
neighborhood around 10:15
on a Friday morning, please
stop in and join us for
Kabbalat Shabbat – we’d
love to see you!!
Shabbat Shalom,
Note from Teri Hochberg
Teach us so to number our days that we may
attain a wise heart. Psalm 90
This is the time of year when we, as American
Jews, again say, Happy New Year! While we, of
course, count our days by the civil calendar year, in
truth, we measure our days by the Jewish calendar.
The Jewish calendar, a lunar-solar calendar in which
the days begin and end at sunset, weaves together
time as established by nature and also mirrors the
rhythm of our laws on how to live every day life. This
month we look forward to Tu B’Shevat, celebrating
the new year (another new year!) of the trees and
reminding us that conserving the earth’s natural
resources is a central Jewish commandment.
Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel once said,
“Judaism claims that the way to nobility of the soul
Park no longer receives a notice of hospital admissions of our members.
If a Park member is in the hospital or in a nursing home, we ask that a family member or close friend
contact Rabbi Skoff’s office. Your help is needed so that Rabbi Skoff, Rabbi Marcus, or
Join a Park Havurah!
Park Synagogue has a wonderful network of
havurot, or small fellowship groups, that meet
monthly in members’ homes or other sites. The
groups do their own activity planning, whether it is a
study, social action, holiday or a social event. Being in
a havurah is a wonderful way to meet and really get
to know others at Park!
What do havurot do when they meet? Depends
on the interests of the members! Our young family
group activites have ranged from a family sukkah
party, to a “women’s only” night at a spa, to a family
Havdalah service complete with spice boxes made
by the children. Other groups have organized study
sessions, enjoyed a picnic and Blossom concert
together, welcomed Shabbat with a potluck dinner,
and celebrated holidays throughout the year.
We would especially like to start the following
new havurot:
• For young singles and couples with or without
children
• For families with preschool-age children
• For families with elementary-age children
• For singles and couples over 50
If you have interest in joining any of these groups or
another new havurah group, please contact Ellen
Petler at epetler@parksyn.org or (216)371-2244,
