Also following on from the release of the Report and in line with recommendations made in the
Report, the Chair, Deputy Chair and I met with representatives of the Law Society and other
members of the Legal Practice Board in August 2011 with a view to implementing a broad
strategy aimed at educating the profession about the Committee's procedures and addressing
mental health concerns. The Committee also published an article 'You and the LPCC How to
Reduce Stress' in Brief in June 2011 and Karen Whitney, the Manager of the Investigation team, is
a member of the Society's Mental Health and Wellbeing Committee.
National Legal Reform Project
In August 2010 the Committee made submissions to COAG on the May 2010 draft of the Legal
Profession National Law. In February 2011 the Attorney General announced that while Western
Australia supports interstate harmonisation of the legal profession in principle, Western Australia
would not be part of the national scheme and instead would reform the Legal Profession Act 2008
to ensure that it compliments the COAG reform model.
Thanks
It has been a difficult but very rewarding year. The changes to the Committee's operations could
not have been so successfully implemented without the support of my very able management
team, my office manager and all the other staff of the Committee.
The operations of the Committee also require support from other senior members of the
profession. The Committee relies on a small but important group of barristers to act on its behalf
in disciplinary matters. My thanks go to all those who have acted as counsel for the Committee
and who, with good cheer, agree to do so at reduced rates.
My thanks also go to the Chair and Deputy Chair and the members of the Committee as well as
Graeme Geldart, the Executive Director of the Board, for their support and assistance.
