INTRODUCTION<br />
Budiriro <strong>Constituency</strong> is found in the western suburbs which are predominantly<br />
High density area. It mainly borders with constituencies such as Mufakose and<br />
Glen view. The constituency has 49 919 registered voters out of a population of<br />
about 129 280 people and the registered people are 39% of the total population.<br />
Most of the residents are found in Ward 33 with 36%, followed by Ward 43 with<br />
34%. The least number of people are found in Ward 32 with 30%. The<br />
population is almost evenly distributed in all the three wards see Chart 1 below.<br />

Table 1 shows that the distribution of population by gender is evenly balanced<br />
though males are fewer than the females. There are 49.8% males and 50.2% are<br />
females thus females are 0.2% more than males. The average house hold size<br />
is 3.9 which is equal to the Harare average.<br />

The table above shows infrastructural distribution by ward<br />
NAMES OF WARDS<br />
<strong>BUDIRIRO</strong> constituency is made up of three wards namely wards 32, 33 and 43.<br />
The constituency has two male councillors and one female councillor. The<br />
constituency has a total of 7 primary schools, 2 secondary schools, and 6 health<br />
facilities, 5-business centres ranging from well-established retail supermarkets to<br />
ordinary tuck shops. The constituency has four registered NGOs that are<br />
operational and these are HELP-Zimbabwe, Mashambanzou, SOS and Child<br />
Protection Society. There are no projects that are operational in this<br />
constituency.<br />
Ward 32<br />
The ward provides shelter to a population of 39 009.<br />
Education: There are two primary schools in the ward are Glenview No. 4 and<br />
Glen View No. 6. The schools were established in 1982, and 1986 respectively.<br />
All the three primary schools experience hot seating. The schools have<br />

enrolments of 1022, and 1856 pupils respectively. There are no secondary<br />
schools in the ward<br />
Health Facilities:<br />
There are 5 health facilities in ward 32. These are the council owned Glen View<br />
satellite clinic, and 8 private surgeries with four prominent ones owned by the<br />
following doctors; Magumise, Shah, Mupfurira and Duri. The health facilities are<br />
crucial in the health delivery system in the surrounding community.<br />
Business Centres:<br />
There are 1 business centres in ward 32, with four prominent retail outlets such<br />
as Batanai, Mutomba, Hamamaoko and Mataure. The business centre is mostly<br />
characterised by retail shops and vending areas. There is also a garage and<br />
overnight car park at the business centre.<br />
Ward 33<br />
Ward 33 has a population of 46 534 people.<br />
Education: The three primary schools in this ward are Budiriro No. 1, Budiriro<br />
No.2 and Budiriro No.3. The two schools Budiriro No.1 and 2 were established in<br />
1989, While Budiriro No.3 was established in 1994. The schools have got total<br />
enrolments of 1782, 1581 and 2526 respectively. Budiriro No. 1 and 2 each have<br />
a teaching establishment of 42 each and Budiriro No.3 has 57 teachers. The bulk<br />
of the teachers are females see Chart 2 below.<br />

Chart 2 shows that the bulk of primary school teachers are females. The highest<br />
proportion of male teachers is at Budiriro No. 2 Primary School with 30% the<br />
least are found at Budiriro No.3 with 10%. Budiriro No1 and No.2 schools have<br />
hot seating (Double Sessions). The ward has one secondary school at its<br />
disposal Budiriro High with an enrolment of 1501 with 805 girls and 696 boys.<br />
The teaching compliment at the school is as follows, 23 male teachers versus 44<br />
female teachers making a total of 67 teachers.<br />
Health Facilities:<br />
Ward 33 is home to Budiriro Polyclinic. The polyclinic offers maternity facilities<br />
and has 30 maternity beds, no general beds and is manned by 28 nurses. There<br />
are also several privately owned surgeries in the ward such as Masunda,<br />
Madecare, Batsiranai and Chudry. The presence of the surgeries affords the<br />
residence accessible specialist health care to the residence of this ward.<br />
Business Centres: The ward has 1 business centres called the Budirio 1<br />
Shopping Centre which is characterised by retail shops and supermarkets, just<br />
like any other in the constituency. Due to the urban setting of this ward a number<br />
of business set-ups exist and these include hair saloons, car repairs, beer outlets<br />
(bottle stores and beer halls), and other informal sector enterprises.<br />
Ward 43<br />
The ward has a total population of 43 737.<br />
Education: There are 2 primary schools in the ward, Budiriro No.4 and Budiriro<br />
No.5 and these were established in 2001. The primary schools have enrolments<br />
of 1294 and 1461 pupils respectively. The two schools have 32 teachers each<br />
but there are more females than males see Chart 3 below.<br />

Health Facilities:<br />
There are three health centres offering health facilities in ward 43. These are all<br />
privately owned facilities known as starlight, Mutetwa and Mashaire surgeries..<br />
Business Centres:<br />
There is 3 business centre in ward known as Currency Shopping Centre,Budiriro<br />
4 Shops and Budiriro 5 OK. The Centres has most infrastructures that<br />
characterise most urban such as retail shops and supermarkets, hair saloons,<br />
car repairs, beer outlets (bottle stores and beer halls), and other informal sector<br />
enterprises.<br />
The Recommendations<br />
There is need for: -<br />
‣ Various service delivery systems to be improved; in fact, an overhaul of<br />
the whole service delivery system with regards to water supply, sewer<br />
system, refuse collection and electricity supply is imperative.<br />
‣ Given the abundance of informal sector business adventures in the<br />
constituency, the Ministry of Gender, Youth and Employment Creation<br />
needs to beef up these enterprises so that they can become more viable<br />
as currently there is no evidence of the ministry’s activities in the<br />
constituency.<br />
