The sound of nature
SYDENHAM Garden in South
London is a local charity which
supports mental health services.
The organisation now enjoys a
resource centre, designed by
Architype Ltd, which includes a
garden used for therapeutic
gardening and creative activities.
The building was a winner of one
of the UK’s Building Better
Healthcare Awards in 2011.
This sustainable exemplar is
constructed from natural
materials which are warm and
textural, reminding people of their
connection to earth and nature. A
sense of solidity comes from the
chunky timber used while the
rooms are full of natural and
uplifting light. A good example of
materials specially selected is the
Troldtekt fine K5 acoustic panels
used for the ceilings. These not
only complement the robust
selection natural materials but
also reduce reverberation time
from the bamboo pre-oiled
flooring and hard surfaces. The
panels have also recently been
classed as an Allergy Friendly
Product by Allergy UK.
The Centre is designed to
Passivhaus principles, with high
levels of insulation and triple
glazed windows and doors. An
MVHR system provides warm fresh
air by recovering 90% of the heat
from expelled stale air.
Renewables have been included
in the form of a solar panel and an
air source heat pump providing
supplementary heat, low energy
internal and external lighting.
Danish manufactured Troldtekt
tiles are made from 100% natural
wood fibres. Their benefits are
high sound absorption, high
durability, natural breathability,
low cost life cycle performance
and sustainability. They are widely
specified throughout Europe to
improve acoustics in many
different projects, such as schools,
swimming pools, sports halls,
commercial and public buildings.
Available in various sizes and three
grades from ultrafine to coarse,
they can be left unpainted or
painted in virtually any RAL colour.

Teak tile showering solution
BRITISH furniture manufacturer, William Garvey, has introduced a new range of organically
distinct showering solutions.
Hard wearing, as easy to clean as ceramic tiles and also easier to fit, William Garvey’s range of teak
tiles is claimed to make the perfect choice for wet-room application. Waterproof and rot proof, William
Garvey achieves this by using a teak veneer fused to a plastic backing. This exclusive design detail
ensures that there is absolutely no movement, shrinkage or expansion of the tiles in a humid
environment.
William Garvey’s teak tiles are designed with interlocking tongue and groove joints that make for
easy installation and avoid the need for unnecessary grouting. Not only will this prevent any ugly
discolouration to the wood but when it comes to cleaning, just use a standard bathroom and kitchen
cleaner to bring it back to life. William Garvey’s shower trays are construction from a 2.5 mm teak
veneer on specialist marine ply with the grids and duckboards made of solid teak. All grids are
designed to be removable, swiftly facilitate cleaning and are supported on rubber studs to ensure
stability. The range of shower trays have also been skilfully designed with an elliptical shaped base to
improve drainage.

SmartPly at Ravenhill
THE MAJOR redevelopment of the rugby ground in Belfast has
incorporated 250 sheets of 18 mm SmartPly OSB3 boards. The
strong, sustainable OSB3 has been utilised during the reconstration
of The Ravenhill Ulster Rugby Club to provide a temporary
hoarding cover for the site.
“We supplied SmartPly OSB3 for the challenging project due to
its highly durable characteristics,” explains Lawrence Murdock, manager
at Peterwoods Builders Merchants. “The FSC certified boards
offered a host of benefits compared to traditional plywood, not least
environmental reassurance, combined with the convenience and
versatility of SmartPly OSB3. The material provides a sustainable
panel that is assessed by BBA for its suitability in outdoor applications
and significantly humid environments. This will enable the
rugby club to deliver an outdoor athletic area that will stand the test
of time.”
