PREFACE Heritage: Civilization and the Jews was a monumental public television event when it was first broadcast in 1984. Filmed in eighteen countries on four continents, Heritage presented Jewish history in the context of world civilization, revealing its texture and content through rare archival film and modern footage. The Heritage DVD-ROM expands and deepens the value of the series by including a wealth of resources and materials that could only be referred to briefly (if at all) in the original television broadcast. By taking advantage of the newest digital technology, the DVD-ROM allows individuals, families, and educators to use the series interactively, enriching the viewing experience by providing access to a vast collection of historical maps, documents, and multimedia presentations. This Resource Guide is designed to help educators and individuals use the DVD-ROM. The guide charts “pathways” through Heritage that illuminate themes in Jewish history. It also includes detailed lesson plans for each of the nine programs that refer to the series and the DVD-ROM’s maps and texts. Abba Eban, former Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations and the narrator-host of Heritage: Civilization and the Jews, reflected on this new stage of the project: It is a matter of profound importance that audiences in the U.S. and around the world, both Jews and non-Jews, can now experience through television and new technologies the long, continuous, somber, sometimes tragic, yet noble story of the Jewish journey across the theater of history. INTRODUCTION In 1984, PBS broadcast a nine-hour documentary series produced by Thirteen/WNET New York, entitled Heritage: Civilization and the Jews. Hosted by Israeli statesman Abba Eban, this epic production traced the history of the Jewish people from biblical times to the present, telling their story as part of the broader history of Western civilization. Five years in the making, filmed on four continents, and the winner of the coveted Peabody Award, Heritage became a landmark — a television portrait of the Jewish experience with a scope and depth that has yet to be duplicated. Now, more than a decade later, Thirteen has re-released the series in a dramatically expanded form. The nine programs have become the centerpiece of a new project, the Heritage: Civilization and the Jews DVD-ROM, designed for use in personal computers. This edition of Heritage also contains a wealth of new material, including a historical atlas of 540 annotated maps, an encyclopedia of Judaism and the Jewish experience, an anthology of almost 700 historical documents, a timeline spanning six millennia and a set of more than 90 multimedia presentations on selected topics in Jewish history. Capitalizing on the amazing advances in computer technology of the past several years, the Heritage: Civilization and the Jews DVD-ROM is one of the most ambitious multimedia learning tools ever developed. It brings the enduring drama of Jewish history to homes and classrooms in a form more compelling and thought-provoking than ever before possible. To accompany the DVD-ROM, Thirteen has prepared a secondarylevel program that can be used to enrich existing curricula or to create a separate high school-level course. The Heritage curriculum is particularly appropriate in History/Social Studies, Language/Literature, and Philosophy/Religion courses. GENERAL OBJECTIVES The Heritage: Civilization and the Jews DVD-ROM provides both teachers and students with a sophisticated research and learning tool. It is designed to open a window onto world history and to help students: • Understand the history and development of Judaism • Understand how Jewish culture has been shaped by its interac tion with other societies • Explore the impact of Judaism and Jewish tradition on surrounding religions and cultures • Understand the social, religious, and political factors that enabled the Jewish people to survive as a distinct group and to consider these factors in relation to other minority groups • Analyze the assumptions and prejudices that make it difficult to appreciate other cultures • Learn to use and analyze primary source materials • View highlights from the collections of archives, libraries, and museums around the world USING THIS BOOKLET • A Guide to the Heritage: Civilization and the Jews DVD-ROM describes the DVD-ROM’s different features and how to access and use them. • Suggested Pathways follows six major topics in Jewish history chronologically, through all the chapters and material on Heritage. It has been designed to provide teachers with a set of resources for building their own courses on each of the subject areas. • Lesson Plans for each of Heritage’s nine video chapters provide a wide variety of learning activities, including discussion questions, puzzles, analyses of primary sources, and research projects. Allactivities focus on key concepts explored in Heritage. Teachers can screen the hour-long videos in class or, alternatively, assign video chapters to be individually viewed by students on personal computers. Lesson plans have been designed to allow teachers to select activities appropriate to the grade levels of their classes. Each plan includes teacher’s resource pages and a student work sheet, which can be reproduced for distribution to the class. Instructions and answers to the activities on the student work sheet appear in the teacher’s resource pages. • A Glossary defines selected terms in Jewish history for teach ers and students. The Glossary may be reproduced for distribution to students. • A Course Grid has been included for teachers who prefer to select individual video programs that they find to be particularly relevant to their curricula. The course grid isolates major themes contained in the programs according to subject area. For exam ple, the chart indicates that “Institutions of Democracy,” a theme appropriate for Social Studies classes, appears in Heritage programs 2, 6, and 7. The key at the bottom of the page provides the video program titles corresponding to each number. (It is recommended that all material be previewed before being assigned.) • Selected Jewish history resources have been suggested for each of Heritage’s nine chapters. Books for further reading range from scholarly works to easy-to-read biographies and, occasionally, works of fiction. A brief list of related CD-ROMs and Web sites has also been provided as an additional resource. 1
