President’s Message
Ken Perry
I love my job. Really! Being the president of this region has its
ups and downs. The pay is non-existent and there are numerous
problems to solve, but that’s OK since most of us solve problems
for a living and have fun with it no matter what. What’s in it for
me? I get to have a hand in the fun stuff, work towards keeping
most people happy, and ensure any negative influences don’t
impact the club. It’s all in a day’s work, and I had many good
mentors along the way to show me how it’s done.
All of this could not happen if we didn’t have an amazing team of
board members who work hard and ask for little in return. Who
needs to delegate when you have a bunch of intelligent, self
motivated men and women who want the same thing?
Let’s start with our VP, Jeremy. He was able to organize the
board to produce our latest version of bylaws and is able to step in
with little notice. He’s a hard-working vice president. Who
would have thought that could happen?
Our membership chair, Bob Schmitt is great in keeping you and
me up to date on “stuff” and ensures new members are welcomed
properly. It’s crucial to reach out to folks once they join if we
want to see them at events, and he does it well.
Next is Ed Lustgarten who has taken on the role as treasurer. His
approach is results oriented and not dramatic. He was able to
work with a CPA to obtain non-profit status with the IRS as well
as keep the checkbook balanced.
Chuck Morrison has been our secretary for a couple of years now.
He takes amazing notes, and is able to create nice looking minutes
that serve as reminders to commitments and decisions. He makes
my life easier, that’s for darned sure.
Connie Schmitt is our newsletter editor and produces a
remarkable and easy read newsletter every month. She and
husband Bob work together to ensure we publish on time and
with interesting things to read. Ed Lustgarten and Chuck
Morrison are great about pitching in for Quality Assurance
services. Well done times 12!
Rusty Russ puts in uncounted hours organizing and
communicating about our social events and has the patience to
make it work when things don’t go according to plan. Of course,
when does it go according to plan? Because of him we have gone
to too many awesome places to count, got there in style, and had
lots of spirited driving en route.
Our Driver’s Education Chief Instructor role has changed
recently from Nick Grynkewich to Allen Shirley. Nick was the
motivation behind our successful “Ride Along” program where
club members over 18 can ride along for a couple of laps for
$25. Nick also organized our instructor school in January to
ensure we had enough qualified instructors to go around.
Taking the reins is Allen Shirley, a long time veteran of our
Driver’s Ed programs, to ensure we continue to provide the
best experience that we can.
Our club race program is alive and well with not one but two
races. The first is in October at Daytona that has been chaired
by Dave Rodenroth for the past two years. He says he wants to
step aside, but I am going to get a court order to make sure he
doesn’t!
Bob Linville has been our Club Race chair for our December
event at Roebling Road for two years now. We also need to
credit him for starting our Driver’s Ed program in the early
90s. He really has brought a bunch to the club and I may
include him in Dave’s court order!
I credit Mike Haile for keeping auto crossing alive. This event
seems to be hard for us to get going and to his credit found that
the Corvette Club is ready, willing, and able to welcome us at
their events. Bless you for not giving up.
Our Concours Chair, Steve Palmer, puts on a low key, fun, and
well organized event time after time. I look forward to his
events because of that. No white gloves here and thank
goodness for that.
Last, but not least, is our recent and reluctant acceptance of
Deborah Mobbs resignation as sponsorship chair. She brought
in a small fortune of sponsorship money for our club races and
then ran around to make sure the sponsors were happy. We
will miss her. Hey, maybe I can put her on Dave and Bob’s
court order too.
I want to close this month with a mention to a big supporter of
the board, Brumos. They have been more than generous with
us over the years and I am grateful for that. It’s nice to work
with a group of folks that care about the club and the members.
Chris Lifka has been our Driver’s Ed Registrar for some time
now. He has been able to turn the event around from a financial
aspect and at the same time making it more enjoyable for the
entrants. He saw our expenses hemorrhaging and closed the gap
while working hard to increase participation. His wonderful wife
Sharon has been at his side or behind the wheel proving the old
adage that “The family that tracks together stays together,” or
something like that.
Porscheklatsch Editor Notes
Connie Schmitt
What a busy spring! Less than 2 weeks after being pampered at the Greenbrier in
White Sulfur Springs, WV, we cruised to White Springs, FL and saw the
Suwannee River. We learned that Stephen Foster, composer of “Old Folks at
Home,” was from Pittsburgh, PA. I’m heading in a few days to western
Pennsylvania to see my folks at home. There is a spring there too!
We missed the Spring Concours, but Steve Palmer has shared results from the day.
It sounds like it was fun!
Bob and I carved out a long weekend to drive our 911 on the Sunrise to Sunset
rally. We really had a good time. I’ve included a story about it in this issue.
Coming up, Alex Randall has planned a local murder mystery driving tour.
Jason Roberts photo: Connie with camera.
The multi-event ZoneFest at Mt. Dora is happening on Memorial Day weekend.
See Rusty Russ’s plans for other June social “happenings.” I’m hoping that
Grove Conrad will write about his trip to Le Mans. We’ll be watching the race at
the Member Appreciation / Le Mans party at Neal and Janice Young’s home. See
you there!
Finally, I’ve only met Ray Grynkewich twice, but feel like I know her from the
adventures of Nicky the Snail that her husband Nick shares with all of us. She’s a
remarkable person and I’m sure she will beat this. Let’s all wish her the best.
Book Review - The Book of the Porsche 356
By Bob Schmitt
I recently read The Book of the Porsche 356 by Brian Long.
This book contains a succinct history of the Porsche car and
the family behind the automobile that exists today. There are
many other more thorough books that document early Porsche
history, but this one provides you with a good understanding
of the formation of the company.
It documents the development and production of the Porsche
356 which grew out of the Volkswagen Beetle. The VW was
created because Adolph Hitler, newly elected Chancellor of
Germany in 1932, wanted an automobile that any German
could own. The German government financed racing
programs for Mercedes Benz and Auto Union. Auto Union's
V-16 Grand Prix car was a Porsche design. Founder
Ferdinand Porsche died in 1951 and his son Ferry Porsche
continued to run the company.
A quote by Ferry Porsche in the 50s still is mostly true today.
"We build cars that have a sporting tendency and which bear
an obvious relation to sporting success."
The photographs in the book are almost all period images. It
is a very helpful source for correctly restoring a Porsche 356.
The pictures highlight the quality built into the cars and the
styling roots of today’s
911.
If you are interested in the
history of Porsche, this
book should be part of
your automotive library.
Zonefest Special Announcement
By Tom Gorsuch, Space Coast
Vic Elford will be attending the May 23-25 Mt. Dora
Zonefest. As our very special guest, Vic will be an honorary
judge at the Saturday concours, participate in the rally, offer
Porsche performance driving pointers at the autocross and
discuss first hand Porsche racing history with us at the Sunday
Victory Banquet. Vic, who lives in Florida, has heard that the
Mt. Dora rally is the closest thing we Floridians have to the
Monte Carlo Rally over the French Alps (which he was the
first to win in a 911 in 1968).
Victor Henry Elford was at the forefront of top-line Porsche
racing. He was the first to successfully rally the 911. He was
the first Porsche driver to win the Daytona 24 Hours thereby
beginning a legacy for Porsche in Florida. He helped pioneer
the famed 917 racecars and recorded many victories in these
fastest to date yet pre ground effects cars. He set a lap record
at Le Mans in a 917 Long Tail being the first driver ever to lap
the famed circuit at over 150 MPH. He has also raced
successfully for other makes in World Championship Rallies,
Formula 1, and CAN-AM; often times running multiple series
in the same year. He was a close associate of Jim Hall in the
early 1970s and assisted in ushering in ground effects with the
leading edge Chaparral racecars. Vic has long been a
significant ambassador for Porsche and holds many close
friendships in and around Porsche. More recently Vic founded
the Porsche Driving Experience in North America and has
written several books including Reflections on a Golden Era in
Motorsports and the recently released 2 nd Edition, Porsche
Performance Driving Handbook.
Time is running short to register for this year’s event.
Registration is via www.clubregistration.net with the event
listed under the PCA Florida Citrus Region. If you need a
paper registration process then please contact Anne Del
Villano, annedelvillano@comcast.net. Don’t miss this once
per year opportunity to compare your car and driving skills
with all of Florida and this once in a life-time opportunity to
share quality time with Porsche Legend Vic Elford.
A Porsche is more than just a car. It is also the expression of the personal
freedom of its driver, personal taste, and lifestyle.
Over half a century ago, Professor Porsche created an
automobile company to build his dream car. His philosophy
of exclusivity, individuality, and craftsmanship became
concepts that are the foundation of Porsche. The Porsche
Exclusive program embodies that philosophy and allows the
Porsche customer to customize his/her Porsche directly from
the factory.
The 2008 Cayman S on offer here was created by the
President and CEO of Brumos Porsche under the Porsche
Exclusive program. It is, perhaps, the only one like it in
existence today.
Painted in the Non-Metallic Paint to Sample color of Fly
Yellow, this special Cayman S is sure to stand out from the
crowd. Spoiler lips in Aluminum Look, All Red
Taillights, and 19" Turbo Wheels accent the unique exterior
design.
On the inside the driver is cosseted in Sand Beige Sport Seats
over the Black deviating carpet color. The non-standard Fly
Yellow color is extended to the interior via a factory painted
Gear Lever and Instrument Surround Trim option. Guards
Red seat belts simulate the look of a professional racing
harness system - sporty, yet elegant.
The performance
options were not left
aside when creating
this road and track
masterpiece. A 3-
Spoke Sport Steering
Wheel connects the
driver with the road
through the optional
Porsche Active
Suspension Management System (PASM). A Sport Shifter
promises that famous "snick-snick" feel of a formula racer
while the Sport Exhaust amplifies the aural pleasure of the
famous flat-six motor. The dash mounted Sport Chrono
Package is both stylish and practical.
When new, this 2008 Cayman S Special Order Coupe carried
an MSRP of $79,405.00. Today, it has covered just less than
700 miles and is offered with the balance of Porsche's factory
warranty for $74,405 plus tax, tag and fees. Don't miss your
PCA opportunity to own this unique example of Porsche's
Exclusive factory order program today. Enjoy the custom
look, without the custom build delay.
Sunrise to Sunset Rally
Story and Photographs by Connie Schmitt
How many people have watched the sunrise on the east coast
and the sunset on the west coast in the same day? On April
26, there were over 100 of us who shared this fabulous
experience with Beach breakfast on Atlantic and dinner on the
Gulf.
The Sunrise to Sunset Rally, limited to 60 cars, was jointly
hosted by Citrus, Space Coast, and Suncoast regions. Online
registration opened on Friday, 2/29 at 1PM. The rally sold out
in the first 4 hours!
Our weekend away started early on Friday, April 25 th . Bob
and I visited our friends Lee and Donna Cockey in Vero
Beach, then drove back on A1A to see FOG friends Ken
Shearer and Kris Henry in Indialantic, and then headed to
Porsche of Melbourne. After our car was tech inspected on
the parking lot, we enjoyed the evening’s “Blue Skies and
Green Lights” kickoff party with special guest Derek Bell
MBE.
Along with most of the other rally teams, we stayed at the
Crowne Plaza in Melbourne on the beachfront. We were up
before dawn on Saturday to catch the sunrise (6:55AM) from
the hotel patio where breakfast was hosted by Porsche of
Melbourne.
We were all sworn in for the day as criminal investigators in a
murder mystery. Kevin Duffy, our Rallymaster, definitely
missed his calling as a stand up comedian. The general
instructions started with 2 basic rules:
1. The Rallymaster is always right.
2. If you have any questions, refer to instruction #1.
Another important rule in the general instructions was to
“have a good time,” and we really did!
There was a Murder Mystery theme for the drive. Kevin had
been a criminal investigator and modified a real case that he
had responded to in Deland, FL in 1988.
The rally started in Brevard County and meandered through
some of the best Porsche back roads in Florida. My favorite
section was early in the day driving on South Tropical Trail
through Merritt Island from Banana River Drive. We also
traveled on Thrill Hill Road, although I cannot tell you where
exactly it is.
During the day, we stopped at checkpoints for additional
information to solve the case. The first clues included the
transcripts from two 911 calls and Kevin’s police report. The
rally revealed a varied Florida terrain and more clues about the
crime. Included in the rally route instructions were questions
that tested our powers of observation and our problem solving
skills. We even visited the actual crime scene which is now a
park!
Sunrise at Melbourne Beach, breakfast at sunrise; swearing
in, agreeing to uphold the traffic laws in the state of Florida.
Sunrise to Sunset Rally (continued)
My mathematics studies in college and graduate school helped
me solve this problem (or maybe it was in junior high):
A Porsche 997 leaves Daytona on I-95 southbound at Mile
Marker 265 for Vero Beach at 112 mph. A Porsche Carrera
GT leaves Vero Beach northbound on I-95 at Mile Marker
138 at 184 mph. At what Mile Marker will they meet?
At the final checkpoint control, we received a list of questions
about things we had seen, like the color of the trim at the train
station. It’s one thing to look for clues while you’re driving,
but another to remember what you saw earlier in the day.
We arrived at the Hotel Isis on the Gulf in Redington Shores.
After checking into our room, we finished our paperwork.
Kevin’s questions on our criminal investigator “job
application” were absolutely hilarious, like whether we are
registered sex offenders! We submitted our application for
scoring and joined the other rally teams at the reception.
Mimosas were flowing, and so were the stories.
We walked from our hotel to dinner at the Doubletree’s Sunset
Room in North Redington Beach where we had a great view
of the sun setting (8:03PM) over the Gulf of Mexico.
After dinner, Kevin announced the winners and thanked us for
material for the next 20 years in his Criminal Justice class at
Daytona. The winner described his qualifications as “good
with handcuffs!” Other people listed jury duty, fighting in
Viet Nam, and watching law enforcement TV shows like
Dragnet and the Andy Griffith Show. This was a very creative
group of people. I can’t remember when I’ve laughed so
much!
This rally was brought back by popular demand after a hiatus
for few years. Keep an eye out for an encore. You won’t
want to miss the next one!
Top: Porsches line up for the start; Porsche of Melbourne’s Shay Rowe in Porsche cockpit; sunset over the Gulf from Doubletree in North Redington
Beach; Bottom: Teams finalize their PCA criminal investigator job applications; Bob and Connie Schmitt toast the end of day at Hotel Isis.
Nicky the Snail Actually Gets to Drive
By Nick Grynkewich, Jr.; Photographs by Tom Sawyer
Ray, Nick III, my brother Greg, and I attended the April DE
and had a grand old time. Wendy and the kids came, but she
didn’t want to drive so she and the grandkids just cheered for
us all weekend.
My brother from Phoenix had just bought a 997 Turbo from
Brumos and figured he may as well get some track time in the
east before he returns to Arizona. We’re going to run Sebring
and Road Atlanta also. After that he’s going to do Brumos U,
and then the fool is going to let Ray and Lynn drive the beauty
to Phoenix! They are really looking forward to it as both of
them could use a break. I don’t know if my nerves could
handle it, so I’ll just fly to Phoenix and await their arrival.
Anyhow, the DE weekend was just gorgeous and even though
we had a bit of rain on Saturday night, the track quickly dried
and was in great shape both days making for good fun and
many good stories at the socials. Greg was having a ball in his
new car, but on Saturday evening told me that he was getting
some tail wag under heavy braking.
He asked if I’d drive it for a session and see what I thought.
Was I supposed to say no to drive in a brand new 997 Turbo?
No way! I agreed before he could change his mind!
Since it had rained on Saturday night, there were puddles and
damp spots all over the track on Sunday morning. The good
news is that he’s using street tires, and in these conditions they
were great. I was passing all the race cars that were trying to
make it around on slicks as they really had to back off when
they came up on the wet spots. It was great sport and I loved
watching their frustration as I sailed by. What fun!
I couldn’t make the brakes misbehave, and Greg said that they
didn’t do it all day Sunday, so we really don’t know what
made it happen on Saturday. It either cured itself or there was
some combination of conditions that made it happen, then
weren’t there the next day. I could also say that Greg is full of
beans, but he’d let Frank Beall drive it on Saturday. Frank
reported the same thing.
the help and fine support during my tenure. I think it’s the
best job FCR has to offer and I consider it a great privilege
that I was able to fill the position. However, I cannot think of
a better selection for the job than Allen and would ask that you
throw your full support behind him and the DE program.
Secondly, as many of you now know, Ray is presently battling
breast cancer. She is undergoing chemo and will have
radiation after that. She had her fourth dose of chemo today
and has four more to go, but the next batch is supposed to be a
bit easier than the first four. She’s tolerating it really well and
the new anti-nausea drugs really do work as she’s not had the
violent sessions you hear so much about. She has a bad time
for the week after a dose, and then recovers to her old self for
the next two weeks. She loses her appetite for a few days after
a dose and is very fatigued, but we’re very grateful it’s not
more than that. As I said above she felt well enough to drive
during the DE as it was between doses which she gets every
three weeks. She sure does look strange in her “Do rag”
though! Maybe I should get her a Harley.
Again, I’d like to personally thank everyone who expressed
support for us and I will tell you that your concern and caring
are VERY much appreciated, especially those who have been
through it and know what it’s like.
So Ray dealing with this and Lynn dealing with WayneO’s
paralysis are the reasons Greg offered them the cross country
drive and that’s why they could use the break. They both
jumped at the chance and are busily making plans, so we are
all hoping that it will work out. Greg says he’ll pay for the
gas, but he doesn’t know about the hotel rooms. Last I saw
they were planning a route thru North Dakota!
We plan to be over and done with all this at the September
DE, and believe me when I say we plan to be there and enjoy
the drive!
See you at the track!
I had a great time in my car and as I reported before I was
trying out the ceramic brakes. (Yes, Greg’s new car has them
also.) One problem I’d had last DE was the PSM tossing me
all over the place, particularly in turn five, to the point that I
had to turn it off to feel comfortable. This time I forgot to turn
it off and found that it was not doing anything like that, and
never interfered at all. Again, I have no explanation for this. I
can only report that it happened.
Finally, here are two more things.
First, as most everyone knows by now, I have been replaced as
CI by Allen Shirley, which is why I actually got to drive. I
thoroughly enjoyed the job, tried to keep the program moving
onward and upward and would like to thank everyone for all
Nick Grynkewich III, Greg Grynkewich, Dr. Harold Thomas
(Bonesy) and Frank Beall.
Grove House Mystery Tour on June 7
By Sherma Katz and Alex Randall
The Florida Crown Region is proud to sponsor a fun-filled day
of “super sleuthing” and “surprises” as we drive the main
roads, back roads, and all roads in between in the Jacksonville
area. The cost for this day of fun is a great bargain at $60 per
car or motorcycle (two participants) and $25 for each
additional participant riding in the car. Register by May 30
for a special gift. Your registration donation is fully tax
deductible and one hundred percent of all registration
proceeds will directly benefit Grove House Supportive
Services, Inc.
For many individuals living in the Jacksonville area, Grove
House may be known for its annual orange picking activity (at
their private orange grove located in the Mandarin area).
What is not readily known is that this 501 (c) (3) non-profit
agency provides coaching services to people with
developmental disabilities and acquired brain injuries. It is
through the efforts of the agency’s dedicated employees that
individuals receive the necessary coaching and training to live
as independently as is possible, and to be competitively
employed in the community. The agency relies on donations
from the private sector, and from state and local government
program funds in order to provide these essential services.
With continued funding reductions from both the state and
federal governments Grove House is faced with tremendous
difficulty to continue its full scope and level of services.
To help Grove House to meet their financial challenge, we
have put together a great event that will test your ability to
follow directions, separate truth from fiction, and demonstrate
that you know the difference between making a right turn and
a left turn. Don’t
laugh! Not everyone
can do all of these
tasks on a consistent
basis. You can work
independently or
with a group of
friends to solve the
mystery. In case you
feel too challenged,
we will have special
prompts to help you
to stay on course.
We will meet on at 10 AM Saturday, June 7 at the Grove
House Supportive Services, Inc.’s business office, located at
2700 University Blvd. West, Suite A-1 in Jacksonville, FL.
After receiving a complete briefing and background
information, you will go looking for clues and gaining
additional information. We have a full schedule of activities,
and will still provide you a few stints of fun driving. At 4 PM,
we will meet (at a secret location) to compare notes, present
our theories, and solve the mystery. Make your plans now for
a full day of fun.
Road Racing Course in North Florida. Yeah, Right.
By Chris Hoyt, Director of Operations, Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance
It sounds like a broken record. Lightning Ridge – dead before
one shovel of dirt was turned. First Coast Racing, LLC – a
few stories in the paper, but nothing. St. Augustine Raceway
– killed by DOT and environmental issues. How many times
have we heard “plans” announced for a badly needed road
racing facility in North Florida only to see them die quickly or
fade away quietly? We’ve hear plans so often that we cast a
jaundiced eye towards any such announcement, until now.
Several of the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance staffers and
volunteers recently headed to Keystone Heights, a popular
lake region about 45 minutes south of Jacksonville, to check
out a promising new development taking shape. Ivor
Wigham, an experienced rallyist for Audi and rally instructor
born in the UK, started European Rally & Performance
Driving School a number of years ago in Keystone Heights
and has been quietly expanding his facility, which sits on a
massive chunk of land adjacent to the Keystone Heights
Airport off State Road 21. He recently gave Amelia founder
and co-chairman Bill Warner a call, and extended an invitation
for us to come see his progress. Our visit was well worth the
trip.
counties in the state and is viewed more as a second home
and/or vacation destination than as a primary residence.
Classrooms are already being used by the rally and karting
students, and the road course’s plans call for an EMT station
with emergency treatment equipment to be built along with
shower facilities and hook-ups. Everything you need to enjoy
a weekend is at the track.
After spending several hours touring the property in an ATV,
we were very encouraged and left wishing Wigham the best of
luck, and he promised to keep us up to date on his progress.
We’re sure that he would be more than happy to host the
Florida Crown Region when he is fully operational. How
does, “Drivers ed and private track days only an hour away,”
sound to you? It sure is music to my ears!
For information on the European Rally & Performance
Driving School, go to www.GoRally.com or contact Ivor
Wigham at 887-872-9993, 352-473-2999 or email him at
Ivor@GoRally.com.
Wigham’s performance driving school has it all. He instructs
rally drivers from all over the world and his 17 miles of
“track” specially built for this form of auto sport run from
asphalt roads to deep forest trails, which wind endlessly
through large patches of pines, scrub oaks, and palmetto
bushes dotting his 330-acre property, and he also has another
150 acres for future expansion. In addition, a 12-turn karting
track sits right outside of his administrative offices. We were
even lucky enough to see a student in action on one of the
rally courses. In addition to rallying, he also provides training
to improve people’s ATV, karting, and SUV driving skills.
Contracts for evasive driving tactics with a number of
organizations, a strong relationship with Polaris, and corporate
motorsports entertainment events help pay the bills and have
allowed Wigham to steadily piece together what should be a
first-class racing facility in our own backyard.
Now, for all you Porsche-owning, road racing junkies out
there, here’s the really good news. When we were there, a
paving crew was putting the finishing touches on the pit road
of a two-mile road course that will feature some tight turns,
long straights, and several elevation changes. Yes, it’s true;
I’ve see it with my own eyes! Alleluia!
After the track has had time to cure and all of the safety
features have been installed, Wigham will begin hosting
groups as soon as possible. That includes private owners of
exotics wanting some track time, motorcycle clubs, cars clubs,
karts, and rallyists. Unlike Roebling Road in Savannah where
residential development is beginning to seriously encroach on
the track, Wigham’s facility faces no such threat and he has
plenty of land to maintain a buffer between him and the
public. Keystone Heights is in one of the less populated
Teams Gear Up for 2008 Transsyberia Rally
By Porsche AG
Porsche’s U.S. Transsyberia Rally team combines youth and experience as it
attempts to conquer the world toughest rally
ATLANTA, May 7, 2008 --- When Rod Millen’s schedule
would not allow him to defend his title as the winner of the
2007 Transsyberia Rally, he was asked who he would
recommend to take over his seat in his Porsche Transsyberia
Cayenne S.
“When Porsche came to me and asked me to recommend
someone, to lead Team USA in my stead, it took me a while,
but in the end, I couldn’t think of anyone better suited than
Ryan,” said the legendary rally and Pike’s Peak Hill climb
champion.
For someone that is only 23 years old, Ryan Millen already
has a very impressive resume. At the tender age of just 18,
Millen competed in his first Baja 1000 and in the five years
that followed, moved from off-road buggies into heavier, more
powerful stock vehicles; in 2008, he will compete in his sixth.
Ryan has pre-run the Baja course at least a half a dozen times
more, honing his off-road skills. For 2007, Ryan won a
convincing class victory at New Zealand’s toughest off-road
event, the Taupo 1000. "I grew up in a motorsports family,"
says Millen. "Even when I was a kid, it was natural to be
around racing cars and I grew up going fast. But my decision
to go racing was not made by anybody else. I enjoyed playing
in the dirt all my life and racing off-road seemed like a natural
extension of that."
How much advice did his father give him about the rally
itself? "I sat down with my dad multiple times" he says. "He
told me about the bigger stuff like the overall strategy, day-byday
tactics and what to expect from the terrain, but some of
the most important information was the small stuff. Things
like how to get fuel, food or water in Mongolia. That kind of
stuff.”
equipment and getting to the finish is second-to-none," added
the proud father.
Millen's background and diverse range of interests make him a
formidable competitor. In addition to his racing experience,
he's an engineer, working at the family business, Millen
Works, on a variety of military projects. Perhaps more
importantly, he has a natural affinity for the wilderness,
enjoying all manner of outdoor pursuits, including mountain
biking. I just love being outdoors, he says. In the summer, I
crave adventure."
Co-driving for Millen will be Colin Godby, a mechanical
engineer as well as a longtime friend. "Colin and I are a good
match," Millen says, "We're both outdoorsy and we're used to
dealing with adversity and difficulty in the wilderness. We
drove together in the Baja 1000 and he's an intelligent guy."
"Events like Transsyberia are the ones to do with your
friends," says Rod Millen, who drove with Richard Kelsey in
the 2007 event. "We'd driven Baja together, so we knew we
worked as a team. But more important than that, it was
important that we had a really good time. We've all been
confined in a small space with someone we didn't like to be
around before; but not for 15 days!"
The U. S. squad will be paired with Team Canada as the North
American entry in this year’s Transsyberia Rally. Team
leader Kees Nierop, once again joined by Co-Driver Laurance
Yap, are both going back to the Transsyberia with something
to prove, having had a harrowing end-over-end crash in last
year’s rally, effectively writing off their 2007 Cayenne S
Transsyberia in the process.
With the cancellation of the Paris-Dakar Rally, the
Transsyberia Rally, called by the elder Millen “the toughest
thing I’d ever done,” moves to the forefront as the most
physically grueling and mechanically challenging
competitions of this or any year. This year’s 4,347-mile route
will traverse the Ural Mountains, wind through the pristine
sub-arctic forests of Siberia, up to the rugged peaks of the
Altai Mountains and continue across the sprawling, barren
Mongolian plains and on through the legendary Gobi Desert,
prior to reaching the finish line in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of
Mongolia.
“Ryan is young, but he is mature as a driver on long-distance,
endurance-type events. He's done the Baja 1000 five times
and has competed in several other U.S. off-road events; his
knowledge in terms of reading the terrain, taking care of the
2009 Porsche Cayenne Turbo
By Porsche Cars North America
Hottest Cayenne ever will debut in the U.S. and Canada in August
The new 2009 Cayenne Turbo S is Porsche’s response to the
enormous demand, especially in the emerging markets of
Eastern Europe and Asia, for premium brand vehicles with
exclusive heritage and performance. With a 4.8 liter twin
turbocharged V8 engine that delivers 550 hp, this latest
Porsche SUV is the most powerful Cayenne ever produced.
Remarkably, even with a 10% horsepower increase over the
Cayenne Turbo, the new Cayenne Turbo S shares the identical
mileage figures (based on European Operating Cycle).
The new Cayenne Turbo S is instantly recognizable with its 21
inch alloy wheels that are housed in wheel arches painted to
match the exterior color, and dual-twin sports tailpipes in
brushed aluminum. Additionally, the air intake grilles and
wheel arch extensions are painted the same color as the
Cayenne’s body. Lava Gray Metallic, a new color that is rich
yet understated, will be offered as an exclusive option for the
Cayenne Turbo S.
The Cayenne Turbo S comes standard with air suspension,
self-leveling and ride-height control, along with Porsche
Active Suspension Management (PASM). This technology
combined with the standard Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control
(PDCC) and Servotronic speed- sensitive variable power
steering allows the driver to enjoy the additional horsepower
while still being rewarded with the handling and performance
characteristics that you can only find in a Porsche SUV.
The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system
currently offered only on sports cars will be available on all
2009 Cayenne S, GTS, Turbo and Turbo S models in
conjunction with 20’’ or larger wheels. PCCB braking power
is provided by six piston calipers applied to 16.4 inch ceramic
discs in the front and four piston calipers and 14.56 inch discs
in the rear.
As should be expected, the standard interior of the top-of-the
range Turbo S is equipped with high-end features such as
sport seats with memory, carbon trim on the dashboard and
door, leather interior in exclusive color combinations
(Black/Havanna and Black/Steel Grey), plus a leather steering
wheel with padded rim.
The Turbo S will be available in the United States in August
and pricing will be announced in the near future.
Well, I have almost finally completed the upgrades and repairs
to my 1985 Carrera 911 Cabriolet which I purchased in
August 2007. I hope to start attending some FCR PCA events
very soon. It has been (an enjoyable) battle, trying to get this
thing right!
If you are interested, please contact me at
AMARR1@msn.com for the necessary parts. Once you have
the parts, the installation is very easy.
I’d like to share one upgrade with everyone. It is a cold air
system which I have designed, developed, fabricated, and
installed. This filter system allows for freer air flow, therefore
creating greater horsepower and smoother performance. It
does create a minor engine rumble, but it is hardly noticeable.
This fits 1984-1989 911 3.2. The filter is “oil free,” cleanable,
and reusable. Best of all, the filter, elbow, sleeve, MAF
adapter, and clamps are all custom-made for me in the USA.
