Porsches and Corvettes at the Low
Country Boil Drive and Dine. Bob
Schmitt photo.
This month’s PorscheKlatsch features our recent social at Angelo’s and our Low Country Boil Drive & Dine, and several upcoming
events. My husband Bob suggested that we reprint the Porsche Detailing article from www.pelicanparts.com. This website includes
parts for Porsches and other marques, as well as technical information and forums. Now I understand where my microfiber towels
(from Sam’s Club) keep disappearing!
Chuck Morrison contributed the article on our recent Low Country Boil Drive & Dine. Chuck also told me about some FCR
members who participated at the September Brumos U. Lanny Wiles just missed out on the "Fastest Time of the Day" award with
his new GT-3, and new FCR member Angela Martin drove her new Boxster. Arnold Zeal provided details about his wife’s Janet’s
experience with their new Cayenne. I was also “Most Improved Driver” at my Brumos U experience a couple of years ago.
The monthly eKlatsch is printed every other month in black & white, and posted online in color at http://www.pcafcr.org. Check this
club website also for the latest calendar, classifieds, and photos. Please send suggestions, contributions, or classified for the Klatsch
to rgs454@bellsouth.net by the 15 th of each month.

President’s Message
Ken Perry – “Let the Games Begin!”
Now that the summer is over and the weather is supposed to get cooler our weekends are filled up with lots of fun car stuff. One of
the joys about living in the Sun Belt is the fact that our car enjoyment is not seasonal. It’s a matter of convenience. We do not have to
wait for the weather to break or the roads to be cleared. Yippee!
As I write this column we are gearing up for our September Driver’s Ed at Roebling Road Raceway. We have the United Way 211
Charity Oktoberfest on October 6 th , our Club Race in Daytona on October 12 th – 14 th , Brumos Swap Meet on the 20 th , and Rennsport
Reunion III on November 2 nd – 4 th . Those are just the events that the Porsche Club has a hand in planning. There are a bunch of
others held during the same weekends scattered throughout Florida. What’s a car person to do?
Meanwhile the Board of Directors has been very busy on the administrative side of things. Jeremy Pinsley and his committee just
finished off updating our Bylaws and what a great job they did. It proves our club has strong leadership. Nice work folks.
To prove what a great board we have I recently had a conversation with my counterpart in another car club. It seems that most of the
work is divided up between a few people. I was proud to point out that our Board has 4 elected members and about 15 committee
chairs / appointed positions. Our board meetings are sometimes standing room only. It pays to delegate because we all end up with a
much better product if there are more folks involved. Our board meetings are productive, fun, and prove that the PCA Florida Crown
Region is as strong as ever. That is a direct result of the hard working folks found on the contact page of the website.
Last but not least I want to express my amazement at the work of Rusty Russ for organizing the monthly socials. Thanks go to Jeremy
Pinsley and Bob Schmitt in getting the word out to members on dates, time, and location. The turnout has been incredible for a
Tuesday night. If you look at the pictures on the website, you can see for yourself that we are a pretty fun group. I can only hope the
trend continues and it should as we understand it’s about the people.
See you at any or all of the events coming up!
Vice President’s Message
Jeremy Pinsly
After nearly two months of back and forth e-mails, phone calls and discussions, I am proud to report to you that we have successfully
revised the Club’s Bylaws. In addition to modernizing the Bylaws and removing many ambiguities throughout the document, we have
added a section to help keep the Club’s finances in check. You can view the Bylaws at the FCR website. For their efforts in assisting
me, I would like to acknowledge Ed Lustgarten, Mark Laszlo, Bob Barren, Cindy Hill, Ken Perry, Bob Schmitt, and Chuck Morrison.
Without their assistance this would not have been possible.
Have you signed up to volunteer for the Daytona club race yet? What are you waiting for? We need people like you to help make this
a world-class event. Last year I worked the grid, and I had a great time. Oh, and you get to see some awesome cars up close!
The monthly social events
have been getting bigger and
better. It is so nice to go out
and see so many people turn
out for food and festivities.
Rusty has been doing a
phenomenal job—and we are
a tough crowd to please!
Don’t forget to keep an eye
on the events calendar. A lot
will be going on now through
the end of the year. Stay
tuned for updates from me.
I’ll see you around town!
Porsche Racing History
Since day one in 1948, racing has been an important part of Porsche. Don’t miss an excellent opportunity for a fairly local event that
will draw Porsche enthusiasts from far away. On November 2-4, the Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona International Speedway will
include three days of racing, and track exhibitions of many purpose-built racecars featuring the dominating 917, 956, and 962
Porsches. Many of these are museum cars.
Many famous drivers of the Porsche race cars will be there, including Richard Attwood, Vic Elford, George Follmer, Hurley
Haywood, Willy Kauhsen, Charlie Kemp, Gerald Larrousse, Rudi Lins, David Piper, Brian Redman, Derek Bell, Gijs van Lennep,
John Andretti, David Hobbs, Bruce Leven, Jochen Mass, John Morton, Bobby Rahal, and Chip Robinson.
There will also be a display of production cars of most models since 1948.
September Social
Connie Schmitt
A HUGE group converged at Angelo’s Restaurant on September 11 for the monthly FCR Social. I had never been there before, but
heard many comments from others who remembered dining at the great, family-owned restaurant decades ago. It closed in 2005 when
the owner retired, and re-opened less than a year ago.
There were almost 50 of us with lots of familiar and new faces. I helped Bob pass out the “Hello My Name Is” tags. After cocktails,
we were seated. Rusty announced Bob Mobbs as the winner of the 50-50 drawing and awarded several other prizes. We also sang
“Happy Birthday” to Jeremy Pinsley. Our waitresses were challenged by the large group, but it gave us time to talk with those seated
near us. The food was finally served and the famished group dove in. It was fun to connect once again with our Porsche friends!
Low Country Boil Drive & Dine
Chuck Morrison
Florida Crown Region’s monthly Drive & Dine for August 18 was first envisioned as a backyard affair at the St. Simons, GA home of
our DE Chief Instructor Nick Grynkewich, Jr. with him and wife Ray preparing the feast. Unfortunately the lovely home of our host
became the victim of a falling oak tree, so our fete was moved to one small facility that specializes in these unique local feeds called
“Low Country Boils”. That can be defined as all the food boiled in a single cauldron. This concept originated in the swampy coastal
backwaters of GA and SC, probably by poor folks owning only one pot. There has been considerable economic progress on St.
Simons and vicinity since that time.
Because we had been guests of the Jacksonville Corvette Club earlier in the year, our D&D Chairman Rusty Russ thought this would
be a great opportunity to reciprocate their hospitality. Well, they joined us at our start point with some 25 Corvettes and we had some
30 Porsches, 102 hungry souls ready for a road trip. Rusty alternated the marques so we were a colorful bunch as you can imagine.
We did seem to attract quite a bit of attention along the way, with some folks even waving to us.
Mudcat Charlie’s Restaurant located on the tidal Altamaha River near Darien, Georgia was our destination. We enjoyed our
beverages on their beautiful outdoor deck and commented on our trip and the boats in the river. As our dinner was boiling under the
watchful eye of host Chris Jones, the air was redolent of fresh shrimp, smoked sausages and fresh vegetables. The food was delicious
and the company was fun. We attracted several new Region members to this event and cemented relationships with our Corvette Club
friends.
Washington DC Area
October 11-14, 2007
Don’t miss out on the Porsche Club of America’s 2nd National event of 2007, Escape07 hosted by the
Founders Region.
Photos from pca.org – Mt. Vernon, Smoky Mountains, rustic covered bridge.
We invite you to attend and experience the premier opportunity for PCA members to delve into the United States beginnings while
enjoying the company of fellow Porsche enthusiasts.
This low key fun-filled weekend getaway is scheduled for Thursday, October 11th through Sunday, October 14th. The members of
the Founders Region have been working hard to prepare a memorable program for all attendees.
October is a gloriously colorful time in the National Capital Region. Washington, the surrounding towns and countryside are filled
with beds of fall flowers. The trees are ablaze with the autumn colors. The days are warm and dry, while the nights are pleasantly
cool. And, the hordes of tourist have gone, so the visitor can absorb the varied and interesting sights and sites that await the
adventurous Porsche members.
Visit historic Mt. Vernon and its newly expanded Visitors Center.
Scientists believe the Smoky Mountains once rivaled the Rockies in height. The majestic aura now comes from the play of sunlight
on their shapes and contours, ever modifying the shades and tones of the mountainsides. They will be at their fall colorful best for
Escape07.
What can be more romantic than a country drive to a rustic covered bridge? How about a whole catalogue of them? Don’t miss this
scenic drive to a collection of early transportation engineering marvels.
Seven other tours are offered, each affording you a wonderful drive to a historic site near the U.S. Capitol.
Porsche Detailing
Bob Tindel – www.pelicanparts.com
Along with the beautiful curves of the newer (as well as older) Porsches, comes some vulnerability to damage from the elements, and
the need for some extra attention to maintenance to ensure that your car stays beautiful. You have probably read other items on how
to keep your Porsche in top shape, so this article will just be a brief review, and will cover some new developments in car care.
Washing the car is the first basic step. It is best to work in the shade, or at least not in the middle of a sunny day in direct sunlight.
The paint should not be uncomfortably hot to the touch. To wash the car, use lots of water in a large, clean bucket, along with just a
capful of so of good quality carwash liquid (unless the car is really dirty—then you will need to use a bit more carwash).
I start with the wheels, using a “Wheel Wooley” (Pep Boys). This is a nice-sized little wheel cleaner that will fit through the opening
of most Porsche wheels, allowing you to clean most of the inside of each wheel without taking them off or getting under the car. Also,
the Wheel Wooley doesn’t have the twisted wire center of most wheel brushes, so it won’t scratch your wheels. Scrub each wheel
gently with carwash solution, and rinse. If the wheels are very dirty, or it has been too long since you cleaned them, you may need to
use some wheel cleaner. Just be careful to choose one that is gentle, and is compatible with the finish on your wheels. Some popular
wheel cleaners contain acids to help “clean” your wheels!
Next, wash the car with the carwash suds, using a good quality wash mitt or small all-cotton terry towel. After washing it, rinse off
the car with cool water. If the car is a convertible, you may not want to wash the top every time you wash the car. Washing is hard on
a convertible top, and may not be necessary unless the top is dirty.
To dry the car, I use a couple of new products that work very well. First, I squeegee most of the water off the car using a “California
Water Blade”, (Costco has them) and then blot/wipe off the remainder with a “dimpled synthetic chamois” (Griot’s Garage,
http://www.griotsgarage.com/index.jsp). I have never been a fan of chamois, but this is a different product. It really soaks up the
water and doesn’t leave little droplets of water on the paint the way a cotton towel does, and there is no lint. Also, it doesn’t seem to
pull the wax off the paint like a traditional chamois. These two items do an excellent job of drying the car, and they do it very quickly.
If you do use cotton towels, and you have a convertible, you know by now not to use towels on the top—it leaves a tremendous
amount of lint.
While we are on the topic of lint, the best thing I’ve found to remove lint is the “lint brush” available at Wal-Mart. It is a doublesided,
unidirectional brush, a bit like the “hook” component of Velcro. You just brush any visible lint spot on the top, and the lint
sticks to the brush. To clean the brush, simply wipe it on a cloth or your hand in the opposite direction.
Dry the wheels with cotton towels. This is not a good place to use your expensive synthetic chamois, because it will quickly become
stained.
The next step is to protect the paint with a good coat of wax. If the paint has minor scratches, or it has dulled a bit, you may want to
apply a glaze first. My favorite is 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. It goes on without a lot of rubbing, prepares the paint for waxing, and
fills in minor scratches. I put it on with a small cotton towel, and then wipe it off with the same, changing the towels frequently. I
don’t use an electric buffer on my Porsche. In my humble opinion, it is too easy to damage the paint with a buffer, and they tend to
spatter product residue all over the car.
When it comes to wax, I like One Grand Blitz wax best. It goes on very easily with a cotton-covered sponge wax applicator. Follow
by buffing it of f with cotton towels. For the glazing and waxing, use a back-and-forth motion, following the way air flows over the
car. That way, if you induce any tiny scratches with a piece of grit caught in your towel, it will be less obvious.
Give the wheels a good coat of wax also, and wipe the tires with a thin application of your favorite tire protectant (mine is Vinylex) to
restore that like-new look. Follow the tire protectant with a wipe-down to remove any excess.
For detailing the interior, and cleaning the glass, my new favorite product is microfiber towels (Costco again). They are incredibly
soft, leave no lint, and pick up dust like a magnet. To clean the interior glass, Porsche Interior Glass Cleaner (very imaginative name)
is excellent.
For exterior glass, the best cleaner I have ever used is homemade, using the recipe from Consumer’s Reports: to an empty gallon jug,
add 1 pint of rubbing alcohol, ½ cup of sudsy household ammonia, and 1 teaspoon dish soap. Fill the remainder of the jug with water,
and you have a lifetime supply of excellent glass cleaner for pennies.
When using glass cleaner, vinyl/rubber protectant, or any other spray product, I don’t recommend spraying them on the car. Spray
them on your cleaning cloth or applicator, and then use them on the car. The manufacturer’s directions usually instruct you to spray
the product directly on the car—it’s easy and it uses more product, but it gets in places where you don’t want it.
Happy detailing, and enjoy your Porsche!
“I really enjoyed serving as Co-Grand Marshal at the previous Porsche Rennsport Reunion,” Mr. Schwarzenbauer related. “At that
event I was so impressed with the enthusiasm and camaraderie of the participants and fans. It was easy for me to see that the Porsche
racing community is truly one big family and this event is their exclusive gathering. I look forward to another great reunion with
them.”
An avid Porsche racing fan, Betty Jo Turner has edited Porsche Panorama for 38 years. The monthly magazine has a circulation of
57,000 enthusiastic Porsche Club of America members.
“Porsche motorsport has been followed intensely by Porsche Club of America members since the club’s formation in 1955,” Mrs.
Turner commented. “Back then, the first Panorama celebrated Pete Thacher’s Speedster win at Marlboro and included Dick
Thompson’s advice on how to race a 356A Super. Today we cheer factory driver and PCA member Patrick Long winning at Le Mans
with a 997 911 RSR and the huge success of the RS Spyders. In between, we’ve been there in spirit for every great Porsche win and
offer our own form of motorsport in PCA’s Club Racing series, where, as always, every Porsche is a race car.”
Weekend Schedule Features Races for Historic and Contemporary Porsche Race Cars on Sunday Afternoon and
the World’s Only Concours Exclusively for Race Cars on Saturday Afternoon
Like the previous events, Porsche Rennsport Reunion III features a three-day program including on-track competition plus a concours
d’elegance, now called the Concours d’ Sport, which is open to the event’s participants by invitation. Events are also planned
commemorating the awesome Porsche 917 racecars and the 25th Anniversary of the racing debut of the all-conquering Porsche
956/962 prototypes.
production race cars, prototype race cars, 911 Cup cars, and, entries permitting, a special 25th Anniversary race for 956/962s.
Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance Founder and Co-Chairman, Bill Warner, and his staff are organizing the Concours d’Sport for
Saturday afternoon, Nov. 3. Staged on Daytona International Speedway’s pit lane, it is the world’s only concours devoted exclusively
to race cars. The event’s judged classes include 917 Coupes, 917 Spyders, 956s, 962s, 550 Spyders through RS61s, 904s through
910s, and production-based race cars.
Entries Feature Legendary Porsche 917 and 956/962 Racecars and the Drivers Who Made Them Famous
Highlighting the anticipated record number of 917 entries are four cars from the Porsche Museum in Germany. They include the 917
Long-tail, the 917/20 “Pink Pig”, the 1971 Le Mans winning 917/K, and the 16-cylinder 917 Can Am Spyder that is making its first
trip to North America. Other expected 917s include the 1970 Le Mans winning 917/K, the 1972 Can Am winning 917/10, and the
1973 Can Am winning 917/30.
Joining these and other 917s are the drivers that drove them to victories in the world’s most prestigious sports car races. They include
Richard Attwood, Vic Elford, George Follmer, Hurley Haywood, Willy Kauhsen, Charlie Kemp, Gerald Larrousse, Rudi Lins, Udo
Schutz, Randolph Townsend, David Piper, Brian Redman, Sam Posey, David Hobbs, Jackie Oliver, and Gijs van Lennep.
The large field scheduled to celebrate the “25th Anniversary of the Porsche 956/962” features an equally famous group of winning
cars as well as their drivers including John Andretti, Derek Bell, Jurgen Barth, Bruce Leven, Jochen Mass, John Morton, Vern
Schuppan, and Chip Robinson.
Other drivers expected to attend include past Porsche factory drivers Joe Buzzetta, Scooter Patrick, Kees Nierop and David Murry, as
well as current Porsche factory drivers Jorg Bergmeister and Patrick Long.
Additional Events Include Street Car Lapping Session, Literature, Toy, and Memorabilia Swap Meet, and Porsche
Model Car Contest
A special pace lapping session kicks off the weekend on Friday afternoon, Nov. 2. Organized by the Porsche Club of America, the
event provides anyone who drives their Porsche to the event the opportunity to tour the entire Daytona International Speedway layout,
from the high banking to the infield road course. The following morning, attendees will have the chance to meet many of the
legendary Porsche race drivers during a special autograph session. Proceeds from both of these events will be donated to Camp
Boggy Creek, a facility for Florida’s seriously ill children.
Also on Saturday morning are two activities new to the Porsche Rennsport Reunion - a Porsche only literature, toy, and memorabilia
swap meet and a Porsche model car contest. Parallel to the famous one held every year at the Los Angeles Airport Hilton and run by
the same team, the swap meet will feature sales and technical literature for all Porsche models, factory posters, books, toys and models
of all sizes and descriptions, with proceeds going to Camp Boggy Creek. The vendor reservation form is available at
www.rennsportreunion.com, or call or email the organizer, Prescott Kelly (203-227-7770) or KellyCT@optonline.net.
The unique Porsche model car contest features 10 judged categories for Porsche race cars. They include 917, 956/962, Pre-1964,
1965-1975, 1976-1981, 1982-present, Small Scale (1/28 and smaller), Large Scale (1/20 and larger), Diorama Racing Related
Subjects, and Porsche Racing Support Subjects. Those interested in entering are encouraged to contact Henry Trent at (423-745-8765)
Dumas/Bernhard Lead Porsche for ALMS Detroit Win
Dumas passes Pirro with four laps left; Penske Porsche Detroit win eighth
overall as Porsche clinches LMP2 manufacturers championships
DETROIT - September 1 - Romain Dumas (France), driving the number seven Penske Racing Porsche RS Spyder LMP2 prototype,
pulled side-by-side and then passed the Pirro/Werner Audi R10 TDI LMP1 car with four laps to go to win Porsche’s eighth straight
American Le Mans Series event overall at the Detroit Belle Isle Sports Car Challenge presented by Bosch.
With the Penske Porsche victory and the Dyson Racing Porsche’s Butch Leitzinger (USA)/Andy Wallace (England) second place in
LMP2, Porsche also clinched the LMP2 engine and LMP2 chassis manufacturers’ championship for 2007, adding to the Penske
Racing team championship which was decided last week at Mosport.
Dumas, and co-driver Timo Bernhard (Germany), started behind their Penske Porsche teammates Ryan Briscoe (Australia) and Sascha
Maassen (Germany), but Briscoe ran into trouble early, incurring a penalty for avoidable contact with a GT2 car, handing the lead to
Bernhard. But, after a series of pit stops which included 12 laps that were led by the Dyson Racing Porsche of Guy Smith, Briscoe put
himself back in the lead before handing the car over to Maassen with 90 minutes to go.
Meanwhile, after a yellow flag session, the Pirro/Werner Audi jumped into the lead at the re-start, and it looked like the more
powerful diesel race car would break the Porsche overall win streak, but Dumas chased him down with less than three minutes to go.
“The Audi could pull away on the two long straights, but I could
get close at the short corners. I did not want to risk my LMP2
first position, but I found a place to pass. He then passed me
back, but I caught him again at the next corner. I knew I could
turn faster laps, but it was hard to get past him because of traffic
and his power out of the corners,” said Dumas.
Maassen ran into bad luck late in the race as one of the Acuras
spun and knocked off the rear spoiler of the number six car,
causing an unscheduled pit stop and putting him two laps back,
resulting in a seventh-place finish in class. Although
Bernhard/Dumas have not clinched the LMP2 driver
championship, they are 37 points ahead of Briscoe/Maassen
with only 49 points to be earned in the last two events. Andy
Wallace/Butch Leitzinger have pulled into a third-place tie with
Acura drivers Brabham/Johansson.
The Guy Smith (England) and Chris Dyson (USA) Porsche RS
Spyder was competitive all afternoon, looking like it would lead
a Dyson Racing Porsche second and third in LMP2 until their
#20 Porsche stuck momentarily in third gear late in the race -
just long enough to slip from second to fifth place. That enabled
their teammates Leitzinger/ Wallace to move into second place -
the team’s best finish of the season
.In GT2, the Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 RSR
of Patrick Long (USA) and Darren Long (USA) gave chase to
the winning Ferrari for the last 45 minutes, with Long falling 20
seconds short at the checkered flag after closing to less than one
second with 15 minutes to go. Still, the second place finish in
class was a bright spot for the team after the Bergmeister/van
Overbeek team Porsche caught fire after colliding with another
car. The severing of an oil line resulted in the fire which caused
extensive damage to the race car. The Tafel Racing Porsche of
Robin Liddell/Wolf Henzler also retired as a result of that
accident.
Brumos U News
Dr. Arnold Zeal
Janet "Mario" Zeal was awarded "Most Improved Driver” at Brumos U in September, driving her new Cayenne. Actually, Janet
doesn't drive the 993 and Cayenne often, although that will change probably change after her experience at Brumos U. It's quite
addictive, as you know. Janet usually drives her monstrous Ford Excursion. The way she drives it, our 4 sons have nicknamed her
"Mario" as short for Mario Andretti. When she whips her monstrosity around a corner, the 4 boys chant "Mario, Mario, Mario."
When set to buy an automatic 993 at Brumos in 1998 (had prior '84 928). Janet lay down the law that “IF I BOUGHT A NEW
PORSCHE IT WOULD BE A STICK" and so it was. Our kids told Brumos salesperson Mike Mason, about the Mario nickname.
After she returned from test-driving the 993, several salespersons greeted her chanting "Mario." All had a good laugh, including
Janet.
Interestingly, I won most improved driver too 9 years ago in my 993. I still own the car and received a Porsche briefcase that I still
use nearly daily.
You might be interested in knowing that our 3rd son, Michael, is in his 4th year as a Porsche technician at Brumos.
