Sunrise to Sunset Rally (continued)
My mathematics studies in college and graduate school helped
me solve this problem (or maybe it was in junior high):
A Porsche 997 leaves Daytona on I-95 southbound at Mile
Marker 265 for Vero Beach at 112 mph. A Porsche Carrera
GT leaves Vero Beach northbound on I-95 at Mile Marker
138 at 184 mph. At what Mile Marker will they meet?
At the final checkpoint control, we received a list of questions
about things we had seen, like the color of the trim at the train
station. It’s one thing to look for clues while you’re driving,
but another to remember what you saw earlier in the day.
We arrived at the Hotel Isis on the Gulf in Redington Shores.
After checking into our room, we finished our paperwork.
Kevin’s questions on our criminal investigator “job
application” were absolutely hilarious, like whether we are
registered sex offenders! We submitted our application for
scoring and joined the other rally teams at the reception.
Mimosas were flowing, and so were the stories.
We walked from our hotel to dinner at the Doubletree’s Sunset
Room in North Redington Beach where we had a great view
of the sun setting (8:03PM) over the Gulf of Mexico.
After dinner, Kevin announced the winners and thanked us for
material for the next 20 years in his Criminal Justice class at
Daytona. The winner described his qualifications as “good
with handcuffs!” Other people listed jury duty, fighting in
Viet Nam, and watching law enforcement TV shows like
Dragnet and the Andy Griffith Show. This was a very creative
group of people. I can’t remember when I’ve laughed so
much!
This rally was brought back by popular demand after a hiatus
for few years. Keep an eye out for an encore. You won’t
want to miss the next one!
