WHAT IS HIT • What is heparin induced thrombocytopenia • Ordinarily, heparin prevents clotting and does not affect the platelets • Triggered by the immune system in response to heparin, HIT causes a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia) • Two types of HIT occur; nonimmune and immune mediated • Type 1 nonimmune mediated has a mild decrease in platelets and is not harmful • Immune-mediated HIT occurs less frequently but is dangerous
