Steve Abel
Named Bucke Professor
The School of Pharmacy is pleased to announce that
Steven R. Abel was named the Bucke Professor of
Pharmacy Practice by the Purdue University Board of
Trustees on April 7, 2006. The Bucke endowed professorship,
established to provide funds for teaching and research,
is named in honor of William S. Bucke, founder of the local
company Lafayette Pharmacal, Inc. Bucke and his wife,
Edith, both deceased, were longtime friends and benefactors
of the School of Pharmacy. This professorship was previously
held by Drs. Robert Chalmers and Michael Murray.
Steve is Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice
at Purdue’s School of Pharmacy. He is also the Director
of Clinical Strategies Advancement for the Department of
Pharmacy Services at Wishard Health Services in Indianapolis
where his emphasis is on compliance with regulatory
standards and patient safety. He received his BS in 1976 and
his PharmD in 1978 from Purdue University. He served as
Assistant Director of Pharmacy for Clinical and Educational
Services for 17 years at Indiana University Medical Center,
now Clarian Health Partners. He then joined the faculty at
Purdue in 1996.
His research focuses on development, implementation,
and evaluation of progressive pharmaceutical services in
organized health care systems. He has extensive experience
in tracking the types and frequency of clinical services
provided in different inpatient pharmacy practice models
(centralized, decentralized, multidisciplinary patient focused
care teams). He has assessed services based upon their impact
on patient care and cost. Other primary areas of interest
include medication safety, strategies to improve medication
management/medication use, and ocular pharmacology.
Steve has published more than 110 scientific and
professional articles and has given more than 300 research
and invited presentations at national and international
pharmacy meetings. He has a history of active service in
various pharmaceutical organizations including the Indiana
Pharmacists Alliance, American Society of Health-System
Pharmacists, American College of Clinical Pharmacists and
American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. In 1995,
he was selected as a Fellow of the American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists.
