Delivering on its promise is the new
Pharmaceutical Society’s top priority
Delivering on its promises is a top priority for
the Royal Pharmaceutical Society as it breaks
away from its regulatory role next week and
begins life as pharmacy’s new professional
body, says Chief Executive Helen Gordon.
“We’ve got to make sure that the services,
the support, the benefits that we’ve promised
the membership run smoothly . . . over into
the commencement of the new organisation,”
Mrs Gordon told The Journal.
Other key aims for the RPS are to develop
new services and approaches, particularly in
response to the changes that are taking place
in the NHS, and to build relationships with
other organisations that represent pharmacy
in order to promote common messages and
exert a strong influence, she said.
A lot of positive working with other
organisations has already taken place as a
result of the recent White Paper, said English
Pharmacy Board chairman Lindsey Gilpin.
Looking ahead to the RPS launch, she said:
“The White Paper has thrown up so many
issues and opportunities, which have [made
us], and will continue to make us, look afresh
at so many things.”
Welsh Pharmacy Board chairman Nuala
Brennan stressed how important it is for the
RPS to engage with members and give people
clear reasons for joining the new body.
Providing strong professional leadership is
also vital “so that the Welsh Assembly
Government is aware of what is the
authoritative voice for pharmacy — and that is
the RPS,” she said.
Scottish Pharmacy Board chairman Sandra
Melville added: “What’s really important . . . is
for the board to be rid of the umbrella that
incorporates regulation and be free to dedicate
everything to leading the profession.”
The new Royal Pharmaceutical Society
is due to be launched on 27 September
2010, the day the General Pharmaceutical
Society is due to take over the regulation of
the profession.
