RESUME WRITING – QUICK TIPS
• A resume should be viewed as a professional document used to market You to employers.
• Showcase your skills, experience and knowledge that are relevant to the position you are
currently pursuing.
• Your resume should be well written and have a professional and polished appearance.
• Remember that the purpose of the resume is to land the interview.
• Make sure your resume is free of spelling errors. Don’t rely solely on Spell Check. Print your
resume and have someone else proofread it. Spell check doesn’t catch errors like using “you’re”
instead of “your” or “there” instead of “their”.
• Use the key words that you find in the job description when writing your resume to increase your
odds of appearing in a recruiter’s search in an Applicant Tracking System.
• Do not include your list of References as one of the pages of your resume. These are two
completely separate documents.
RESUME WRITING – QUICK TIPS
IF YOU HAVE NO WORK EXPERIENCE TO INCLUDE ON YOUR RESUME CONSIDER
INCLUDING SOME OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION.
• A skills summary section to highlight your technical skills and functional skills.
• Course emphasis section to show employers the subjects you are currently studying in school
that are related to your degree program.
• Include descriptions of school projects or independent projects that are related to your degree
program.
• Include volunteer work/community involvement and list this just like you would list work
experience (Company name, title, work performed).
• Show your school and/or industry involvement by listing organizations, clubs, and associations
you are involved with.
• Add an Honors section where you can list a membership with the national honor society or other
organizations honoring your academic achievements.
*see Resume Samples section for a sample resume with no work experience.

Scott R. Blanchford
Director of Development
Bayern Company
14354 N. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd
Suite 7
Scottsdale, AZ 85260
Dear Mr. Blanchford,
I wanted to thank you for meeting with me on Thursday. I walked away with a very clear definition of
the type of person you are looking for, and more importantly, what you are looking for in that individual.
Without a doubt, I feel that I can far exceed your expectations for this position and bring along many
other assets to Bayern as a company.
To refresh your memory, I have over 15 years of customer service experience with 10 of those years
being in technical support and almost 7 of those years working in both a UNIX and Windows
environment. I have also had experience working with different routers and switches and I am familiar
with networking protocols and terminal services. I have worked as a project manager before and I
know the importance of teams and having that “Whatever it takes” attitude to get the job done. My
attention to detail has always been held as a high priority, both in my personal life, and in my work.
While at PetSmart I was part of a team called Root Cause Analysis where having a high attention to
detail was a must. I would also like to add that I have worked with proprietary systems before, learning
them from the ground up, and have always been up to speed faster than my peers, as I love to read.
Assets that I have that could work as a future benefit would be my web design and COBOL
programming.
In closing, I would like to thank you again for the opportunity you extended to me on Thursday. You
mentioned that you should reach a decision on a candidate within two weeks. I will be happy to contact
you again at the end of the two week period and follow up on your decision. I hope to hear from you
very soon and also that I have convinced you that I want this job. If there is anything else I can tell you
to convince you that I am the right person for the job, please contact me at 602 555-1234.
I would like to express my sincere thanks for allowing me the opportunity to interview with you on July
2, 2009 for the Design Engineer position. I learned a great deal about your company and I am
convinced that I would be a great asset to the Advanced Engineering Concepts team.
After interviewing with you, I was impressed with the structure and philosophy of your company, which
closely parallels my own ideals. The fact that I will be able to use so much of my education for this
How to Tie a Tie
The “Four-In-Hand” knot is the easiest to tie. Place the tie around your neck with the wider side
of the tie to your right. It must hang lower than the narrow end. With your right hand wrap the
broad end of the tie over the narrow side and under completely to where your started. Pass the
broad end over the narrow side once more so that it is lying on the left. Push the broad end of
the tie upwards through the neck hole toward your chin. Now pass the broad end downward
through the top layer of the knot and pull it smooth. The knot should now be formed. Tighten
the tie gently and remember to button up the last button on your shirt.
