SCHOOL NEWS
Message from Principal Jeanne Donovan
The end of the year is here and so many exciting events have taken place in the last few weeks.
Thanks to the Community Resource for Science (CRS), all students participated in hands-on science experiments
led by a group of young researchers and scientists from UC Berkeley. In May, 6th graders worked on mountain
building, 7th graders on spring mechanics, and 8th graders on optics.
This year Core 6 students raised $15,229 for the Walk-a-Thon fundraiser. Wow! What an accomplishment and
kudos to them and to their teachers. The students supported three charities with the proceeds: East Bay SPCA
(animal shelter), Shepherd’s Gate (shelter for women and children), and Cure Epilepsy Foundation.
The 8th Grade Boat Dance was a huge, smooth-sailing success. The boys were so handsome in their sports
coats and ties and the girls looked absolutely stunning in their dresses. Thanks to our parent coordinators,
Christine Crowley, Sheila Addiego, Kristen Dixon and to all the parent volunteers who helped to make this event
a memorable one. What a fabulous evening! And…there is still the 8th Grade Celebration to look forward to.
What a wonderful way to end the school year.
Lastly, and most importantly, I would like to express my gratitude for your commitment, support and dedication
in our efforts to provide your children with a superb learning experience. You are an invaluable component to

the success of our school. I applaud the work that all of you do. Thank you again for a most memorable and
exhilarating school year.
Have a safe, fun, and relaxing summer!
6th Grade:
Celebrate at the end-of-year pool party! Tuesday, June 12, 10:15am-12:15pm
Students must return waiver forms, bring suit, towel and sunscreen
To celebrate their successful transition to middle school, all 6th graders will head over to the Piedmont Pool
right after brunch on Tuesday for our annual 6th grade pool party organized by the Core 6 teachers. The kids will
swim, listen to music provided by Robbie Diaz and sign yearbooks. Students should eat a good brunch at school
before we leave at 10:15 and should bring sunscreen, a bathing suit and a towel to school. Every child, no matter
what, will have to pass a swim test in order to play in the large pool, but they do not need to take the test to play
in the medium pool. Professional lifeguards will administer the swim test and will be watching the kids the entire
time. Waiver forms will be distributed on Monday by Core 6 teachers. Students must return the waiver forms on
Tuesday in order to enter the pool area.

Turn in proof of Tdap booster prior to August 17
Please provide proof of immunization to the PMS office as soon as possible for all 6th graders. Parents objecting
to obtaining the vaccine may request a waiver form from the office.
Parent Club News
Message from Shirley Rexrode, PMS Parent Board President:
I am honored to serve as President of the Piedmont Middle School Parents’ Club (PMSPC) for 2012-13, with
Hilary Cooper serving as Vice President. Please join us in applauding our outgoing president, Mary Kelly, for the
excellent job she has done in leading the parent club and further strengthening the relationship between the PMS
administration and the parent club. Mary was instrumental in many of the improvements this year, such as the
creation of the collaborative block schedule committee, improvements to the Weekly Bulletin, the production of
the PMS Musical Into the Woods, and the development of the iPad grant for PMS, to name just a few. She has
truly made this school a better place for all your children, and we are very grateful. Mary, we are very sorry to see
you leave as your youngest child graduates from PMS, but we hope that you will still serve us in an advisory role
from that far, far away place called PHS.
Congratulations to the 8th grade parents on your child’s journey to high school! We hope your child will come
back to be a Youth Educator for PMS when they get that opportunity at PHS. Best of luck to your child in high
school.
6th and 7th Grade Parents: Please click HERE for important information about the 2012-2013 school year. The
PMS parent club hopes to be your “voice” to the administration and teachers at PMS. To stay informed, first
please read the PMS Weekly Bulletin, as it will give you essential information about your child’s experience at
school. Secondly, please look at the list of PMS Parent Club Board members and find at least one board member

that you would feel comfortable contacting should you have any thoughts and concerns regarding PMS. Better
yet, plan to attend one or two board meetings during the year to see how they are run. The meetings are at 8:30am,
typically on the second Friday of every month. There will also be an evening meeting on Thursday, November
15 at 7pm in the MPR. Finally, try to find a way to volunteer. There are many opportunities, from all-year
commitments to one-time contributions. Opportunities will be listed in the bulletin as well as on the website.
The Parent Club Board wishes you a great summer and looks forward to welcoming you and your child back to
PMS in the Fall. If you ever have any questions or concerns that you would like our perspective on, please feel
free to contact me Shirley Rexrode or Hilary Cooper .
PMS REGISTRATION INFO
On-line Registration for 2012-13 will open the 2nd or 3rd week of August 2012.
Look for a letter from the district with your child’s student and registration ID numbers. First, don’t misplace
the letter because that letter contains the codes to get into the system. Second, if you complete registration early,
you will have more choices of 15 minutes slots for the walk-through registration on 8/20 (see below). You’ll
submit your credit card twice during on-line registration: first, for costs from the school district and, second,

for programs managed by the parent-run organizations. You’ll need to print the last page and bring it to Walk-
Through Registration. Beware, it is easy to misplace!
Mandatory Walk-through Registration on Monday, August 20th from 1-6pm.
You’ll need your paperwork from on-line registration. At least one parent/guardian must accompany each child.
Please allow 2 hours to get through the process. The schedule is VERY tight so come a few minutes before your
time slot and you will be put in the appropriate line. Coming a lot earlier than your 15 minute time slot does NOT
get you in earlier. If you come later than your appointed time slot, we will put you in a separate line and you will
be allowed in as the line thins. Walk-through registration will be in the PMS multi-purpose room. In addition to
the key checkpoints for completing the emergency card, school photos, PE uniform pick-up, school schedule and
textbook pick-up, there will be tables for all the important volunteer organizations and for your grade level parent
representatives. You’ll be able to sign up as a room parent, and you’ll also have a chance to get a one-on-one tour
of the campus. Remember, your children will be given a whole set of textbooks to keep at home. They are really
heavy so they will need help with this. Dress code from the shoulders and up should be slightly formal since your
child’s yearbook photo will be taken that day. Please be sure to bring your checkbook.
