FUTURES FIRST CAPITAL CAMPAIGN DONORS<br />
LAUREN STARLING<br />
While most of her South Central High School classmates were<br />
completing requirements for a high school diploma, Lauren<br />
Starling was also busy putting <strong>the</strong> finishing <strong>to</strong>uches on a college<br />
degree. In addition <strong>to</strong> her normal high school courseload,<br />
Starling <strong>to</strong>ok college classes at PCC. As a result, she earned an<br />
associate degree in University Transfer around <strong>the</strong> same time she<br />
received her high school diploma.<br />
Starling is well on her way <strong>to</strong>ward becoming a second-grade<br />
teacher, something she has dreamed about since she was a little<br />
girl. The credits she earned through concurrent enrollment at<br />
PCC helped speed that process along by allowing her <strong>to</strong> enter<br />
East Carolina University this fall as a junior.<br />
“(Concurrent enrollment) allows you <strong>to</strong> get a taste of what<br />
college classes are like before actually entering college full-time,”<br />
“I feel that when you are given an opportunity <strong>to</strong> learn and <strong>to</strong> grow,<br />
why not take advantage of it?”<br />

says Starling. “It allows a person <strong>to</strong> learn how <strong>to</strong> be independent,<br />
school-wise. It helps a person plan effectively and efficiently. It<br />
also allows <strong>the</strong> student <strong>to</strong> get a jump start on college credit. ”<br />
Though <strong>the</strong> additional<br />
coursework gave her<br />
a busier schedule than<br />
<strong>the</strong> average high school<br />
student, Starling found PCC<br />
advisors helpful, instruc<strong>to</strong>rs<br />
very understanding, and<br />
she enjoyed <strong>the</strong> added<br />
responsibility that helped<br />
her develop timemanagement<br />
skills.<br />
