Whilst the bottom line to the<br />

PHPA was testament to the<br />

wonderful team of workers and<br />

support through each class, the<br />

real winner from the Festival at<br />

the <strong>House</strong> was the continuing<br />

sense of community health and<br />

happiness. This is priceless.<br />

To each member of the PHPA<br />

organising team under the<br />

marvellous leadership of Mrs Lissa<br />

Hurst, I can but say a very<br />

sincere thank you. Last Saturday<br />

showed the true spirit of <strong>Pittwater</strong><br />

<strong>House</strong>. The team has been in full production mode for quite some time; the<br />

last week has widened that network to seek the support of parents to make<br />

and bake; to serve and set up; and finally to take down and clean up ready<br />

for a full school day come 8.30am Monday. When the Hall and gates were<br />

locked up late on Saturday evening, the celebrations could begin. The <strong>School</strong><br />

and your children are in your debt.<br />

GRIT AND DETERMINATION…<br />

There are a small group of parents who share stories with me… articles and<br />

websites and experiences elsewhere. It is very much appreciated. One such<br />

offering came through this weekend from CBC News, asking ‘what if a child’s<br />

success in school was measured not in IQ but in strength of character’. It is a<br />

question asked by Paul Trough in his book, How Children Succeed-Grit,<br />

Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character. It is worth quoting from this<br />

CBC Report as it holds true at a time of year when everyone is tiring and yet<br />

there are key activities to complete before we can bolt the gate and say 2012<br />

has been successfully completed.<br />

The article continues … “the educators and scientists that Trough interviewed for his book say that character is<br />

malleable. Kids can actually develop a set of strengths over time. In order to do that, they must learn not only to<br />

accept but embrace failure… failure can be very scary until you experience it a few times, says Trough. Too often we<br />

protect our kids from making mistakes... if you are able to bounce back from failure, it gives you a certain amount of<br />

resilience and a confidence that next time you can experience a setback and recover and do better. Children who are<br />

unused to failure are actually at a disadvantage. They end up being fragile and brittle, and they’ll go out into the<br />

world and experience some kind of setback and it will often completely derail them, because they haven’t had that<br />

experience, that opportunity to learn how to fail, he says…”.<br />

As we move our thinking at <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong>, we will continue to work on our academics and additionally focus on the<br />

character traits. Our planning is underway to embrace this opportunity and help the students in the key areas of<br />

happiness and resilience. It is an area I focus on when interviewing new students and families. Part of this is our<br />

subscription to the work of well-known psychologist, Michael Grose. Therefore an additional element to <strong><strong>House</strong>News</strong><br />

every fortnight will be a link to a parenting idea from Michael. I urge you strongly to use this additional service to our<br />

parents. This week, Michael shares his reflections on gratitude. It is a timely thought piece no matter what age your<br />

children. I commend the article to you.<br />

JUST ANOTHER ADVANTAGE OF PITTWATER HOUSE…<br />

The Year 11 students have of course begun their HSC studies this term. Each subject has at least one assessment<br />

item before the end of the school year toward their final result in 2013. As part of their studies, the Business Studies<br />

students and the Legal Studies students have recently experienced two marvellous excursions focused on current<br />

topics. In each instance, it was <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> parents who made the excursion possible.<br />

We are indebted to Mr Craig Dunlop (Kelsey C10 and Reiley P6) and Mr Todd Alexis SC (Maddy C10) for their support.<br />

The Business Studies students visited the PharmaCare Laboratories in Mona Vale where Mr Dunlop is Operations<br />

Manager. Supported by Mr Michael Halter, the Operations Director, the students were given a presentation on the<br />

business and a guided tour of the warehouse.<br />

The Legal Studies students visited the Supreme Court of NSW to witness an Insider Trading Case. Mr Alexis not only<br />

visited the class as pre excursion preparation but he arranged for a private question and answer session with the<br />

Crown Prosecutor and Defence Barrister and the Judge, the Hon Justice McCallum. This is a unique opportunity and<br />

ensures <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> students are given insights rarely possible at other <strong>School</strong>s.<br />

And whilst wandering in and out of classes last week, I happened upon<br />

the girls of J5. They were busily putting the finishing touches on their<br />

newspaper from the Golden Era of Eureka in 1854! Each student was<br />

playing a role: Editor, Manager, Reporter, Photographer (illustrator<br />

perhaps?); they were working to role and have been happily engaged<br />

in research, editing, matching and ensuring each student emailed<br />

around deadlines and task completion. At the same time they were<br />

learning very important tasks around teamwork. Earlier that day I had<br />

a visitation from 4 very impressive Kindergarten students. Their task<br />

was to interview the Principal about her job. The questions were set<br />

and Marigold was responsible for writing the answers I shared. She<br />

asked about the study I did to become a Principal so I showed the<br />

students<br />

the books I wrote for my post-graduate degrees. And when they asked<br />

me my hobbies, they had to search my Office to find the answer! It<br />

took some time to spot the AFL Demons football…<br />

As we move into the final throes of 2012 I trust you are reflecting on<br />

the many achievements for each member of your family across the<br />

calendar year. When this is broken down across a week, it is still<br />

impressive. When you think about each day, each of us can nominate<br />

what has gone well …<br />

I trust the coming week continues positively for you all.<br />

LONG TAN AWARDS<br />

On Tuesday 27 November Warrant Officer Mark Hammond presented<br />

to the 2012 <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> recipients, their Long Tan Awards. The<br />

Battle of Long Tan (August 1966) holds a special place in our national<br />

psyche for it was here that 108 Australian soldiers held out against<br />

2500 Viet Cong, overcoming monsoonal rain, difficult terrain and a<br />

barrage of shelling.<br />

These Awards, first established in 2006 by the ADF for Leadership<br />

and Teamwork, recognise students who demonstrate leadership and<br />

teamwork within both the <strong>School</strong> and the broader local community.<br />

At the same time, they recognise those who display strong values<br />

such as doing one’s best, respect for others, tenacity, compassion<br />

and ‘mateship’; characteristics that are integral to Australian society.<br />

Congratulations to Tamsin Delaney (C10), Brittany Klein (C11), Laura Melrose (C12) and Akshai Bhandari (G11) and<br />

Fraser McTavish (G12).<br />

General News<br />

DEADLY CRUISING…<br />

Students in Years 6, 7 and 8 in 2013 are invited to take part in the Forensic Science Camp being<br />

held at <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> from Wednesday 23 to Friday 25 January. Students can enrol in either a<br />

one day program-23 January or the 3 day program.<br />

The one day program looks at a crime where the murderer is yet to face the court; the task for<br />

the day is to see if we can have the suspect convicted. So if you like thinking, arguing, problem solving, working as a<br />

team to solve a problem and analysing evidence, this may be for you.<br />

Days 2 and 3 … a locked cabin, a luxury cruise ship, a dead body and plenty of mystery… your aim is to solve<br />

the crime called “Deadly Cruising”. Analysing evidence in the science laboratories, taking fingerprints, questioning<br />

witnesses, interrogation of suspects… and more.<br />

The camp is being run for <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> again by Mr Bill Toppin, a former <strong>School</strong> Principal for 17 years who now<br />

consults, teaches and runs forensic science camps in Tasmania, NSW, Singapore and Indonesia. This will be his 22 nd<br />

camp!<br />

An application form is being sent to <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> students and those students joining <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> in Years 6-8<br />

in 2013. It is also available on My<strong>House</strong>.<br />

We do hope you will take up the challenge and solve the crime…<br />

Bookings close on 15 January and there are no refunds or cancellations after 9 January.<br />

REMINDER FOR THOSE STUDENTS USING STATE GOVERNMENT BUS PASSES IN 2013<br />

1. All Students using public school buses who are moving from Year 2 to Year 3 in 2013 will need to complete<br />

a Blue Bus Pass Application Form as they must now meet eligibility criteria.<br />

2. All Students using public school buses who are moving from Year 6 to Year 7 in 2013 will need to complete<br />

a Blue Bus Pass Application Form as their eligibility criteria changes even if they are still at the same<br />

school and on the same campus.<br />

3. Any student using public school buses who has changed address or will be changing address before<br />

return to school should complete a new blue application form showing the new address for a pass to be<br />

processed.<br />

4. ALL BLUE APPLICATON FORMS are to have students CLASS YEAR circled and clearly marked 2013.<br />

5. BLUE APPLICATION FORMS will be available from your class teacher or Reception.<br />

DEBATING 2013<br />

Debating will commence very early in Term 1 next year with various workshops taking place as early as 18 February.<br />

The HICES competition Round 1 will be on 28 February and coaching will begin in Week 2. If you would like to be<br />

involved in debating next year you are required to express your interest to Mrs Sellies via email<br />

juliette.sellies@tphs.nsw.edu.au or in person as registration of teams for the HICES competition needs to be finalised<br />

before the Christmas holiday period.<br />

FROM THE CREATIVE ARTS FACULTY<br />

<strong>School</strong> Spectacular<br />

On Monday 26 November a combined vocal group made up from the Cantabile Singers, Chamber Choir and Senior<br />

Choir joined together to sing some Christmas songs at Warringah Mall as part of their <strong>School</strong> Spectacular. This was<br />

followed by the Big Band playing several toe-tapping pieces. It was a very successful event and members of the<br />

audience remarked on the high standard.<br />

Christmas Carol Service<br />

The Christmas Carol Service will be held on Friday 7 December in the Hall. All parents and alumni are invited to join<br />

FROM THE CHAPLAIN<br />

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal<br />

As the term draws to a close and the Season of Christmas is approaching at a frightening pace may I remind<br />

everyone here about the Class Hampers and the Christmas tree in the Hall.<br />

We support the Salvation Army with both of these appeals each year. Please place your gifts of unwrapped games,<br />

books toys etc. under the tree for collection after the <strong>School</strong> Carol Service. Another method is to purchase gift cards<br />

and pin those to the tree for help in the local areas of need.<br />

Gifts of non-perishable food are also collected in the form rooms and these hampers are also given to the Salvation<br />

Army to help them to supply food to those in need at Christmas time.<br />

Last year we passed on a cheque for $325.00 which was collected following the <strong>School</strong> Carol Service I hope to be able<br />

to repeat this generous donation from the school family which shows a tangible way in which we are mindful of those<br />

who are in need.<br />

Alumni News<br />

We held a very well attended and happy evening recently with the Alumni Christmas Party held in the Hall. Cathy<br />

Player, the president welcomed the gathering and our special guests. Dr Hillier as our host for the evening, spoke and<br />

welcomed everyone to the event. Mr Rex Morgan, the Founder and Patron of the Alumni Association was also<br />

welcomed and he spoke wishing the Association well.<br />

The Paella was served and proved to be a great success, enjoyed by everyone. We now look forward to many more<br />

events and thank the committee for the tremendous amount of work which went into the evening.<br />

FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL<br />

The final round of the Public Speaking Competition took place last week with<br />

the student representatives from Year 3 to Year 6 contesting the<br />

championship. Fine presentations were delivered to the audience from<br />

Campbell Jones (P3), Megan Shaw (J4), Caprice Pethybridge (J5) and Tamsyn<br />

Navra (J6). Campbell and Caprice were the announced winners for their<br />

respective stages and received their awards from Mr Strange who adjudicated<br />

a very difficult competition.<br />

The Christmas tree in the foyer of the Hall is there as a reminder that, even though we are looking forward to a<br />

Christmas, for many, sadly, this may not be the case. Don’t forget the gift of giving, where bringing joy and<br />

happiness to others can be just as fulfilling. The Salvation Army will ensure that gifts and non-perishable food items<br />

are distributed to those most in need. It is asked that gifts be left unwrapped so that they can be distributed much<br />

more easily. Non-perishable food items can be let in a box in your children’s classrooms.<br />

Parents of children in E–2 are invited to attend the Christmas Concert in the Hall on Tuesday 4 December,<br />

commencing at 9:00am and concluding at 10:00am. Parents are invited to bring along a morning tea to share with<br />

their children on the oval from the conclusion of the concert until 10:45am. The oval will be open for overflow parking<br />

and refreshments will be available on the Hall veranda before the concert from 8:30am. The excitement in the<br />

children is building and I look forward to sharing this wonderful occasion with you. As always it is sure to be an<br />

entertaining show.<br />

Over the coming week, Year 6 will be performing at assembly, the students from K-6 will be attending their Christmas<br />

Picnic, they will be rehearsing for Carols Night and for Prizegiving. Students’ attendance at the Carols Evening is<br />

mandatory and correct <strong>School</strong> uniform must be worn.<br />

Mufti clothing maybe worn for the Picnic Day, however, the <strong>School</strong> wide<br />

brimmed hat must be worn by all students, to ensure maximum sun<br />

protection. Miss Bennett’s note home, outlines the dress code for the day.<br />

In the classrooms, Year 2 is preparing for their Polar Express extravaganza,<br />

Years 3 and 4 are preparing for their Harvest Party, where they will<br />

consume the produce they have grown in their garden beds this term.<br />

Lovingly iced and decorated cupcakes went on sale for the Junior <strong>School</strong><br />

and ECC students last week. What a delicious treat! A huge thank you is<br />

extended to the very talented and culinary gifted parents of the K -2<br />

children. Your generosity was appreciated and enjoyed by all.<br />

STUDENT SUCCESS<br />

Renata Ferreira (J4) was announced the Years 3/4 tennis champion on Sunday<br />

at the <strong>School</strong> Championships. Congratulations to this up and coming young<br />

tennis star.<br />

Emily Rowell (J4) competed in the NSW State Little Athletics Championship at<br />

the weekend. Her long jump measuring 4.09m, won the event and broke the<br />

age record. Congratulations Emily, we are proud of you.<br />

NORTHERN BEACHES PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHESS TOURNAMENT<br />

On Thursday 15 November, <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> hosted the Northern Beaches Primary <strong>School</strong>s Chess Tournament. It was<br />

a very successful day with over fifty teams competing in the tournament. The day allowed for the children to<br />

experience playing in competition conditions, foster their enjoyment of chess and make new friends. Congratulations<br />

to the <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> Chess teams for taking part in the day and representing our school so well. A special mention<br />

must be made to the <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> F team, which came 11 th overall. The team included Jack Boyle, Jaiden Brazier<br />

and Giles Fitzpatrick-Vale.<br />

VACATION CARE – A YEAR IN REVIEW<br />

AS 2012 comes to a close for the school community I wanted to express my gratitude to all teachers – particularly the<br />

ECC team – who have been such an open and welcoming group of people. It has been such a gift to share in their<br />

passion for working with children and seeing them grow and learn about themselves and the world around them. I<br />

would also like to thank Agustina for always coming to work with a smile and being so passionate about the<br />

development of all children.<br />

Holiday clubs are open for December and start back again on January 14 next year in the lead up to first term next<br />

Highlights for 2012 (look for lots of photos and discussion in the 2012 <strong>Pittwater</strong>man).<br />

The children designed a sports stadium. The cardboard model took all term to make with many valuable<br />

contributions. The stadium was officially opened at the end of Term 3 with speeches and a naming ceremony.<br />

The love of cooking...started with pancakes and is looking unlikely to end! The program now sees the older children<br />

leading the activities and helping the younger children. They all keep me on my toes finding new recipes!<br />

Lots of games and activities, including treasure hunts etc. The children always come up with interesting ideas. Paper<br />

planes never get old!<br />

Secondary <strong>School</strong> News<br />

FROM THE HEAD OF GRAMMAR<br />

I experienced some of the community spirit over the weekend; spending time at the “Festival at the <strong>House</strong>” followed<br />

by the Year 10 Formal at the Harbord Diggers. On both occasions it was wonderful to see students outside the ‘formal’<br />

<strong>School</strong> environment and having fun with their families and friends. These are the type of events that bring the <strong>School</strong><br />

community together and we all owe a huge debt of gratitude to the parents and planning committees responsible for<br />

organising such tremendous occasions.<br />

The yearly examinations are now complete and students will have exams returned to them and responses analysed. It<br />

is important that they reflect on their results and decide on goals and changes to implement before the next set of<br />

exams. Teachers comments in the reports that are sent home are also vital for improvements in results.<br />

Our sister school in Japan, Chiba Keiai, are sending two students on an exchange program in late March next year.<br />

Two Year 10 boys will join us for a week to experience Australian life. I am looking for host families for the boys and<br />

would appreciate assistance from any families who would like to entertain these young men. We will be sending a<br />

group of our students across to Japan at some time so this would be a good time to make acquaintances.<br />

STUDENT SUCCESS<br />

Congratulations to the following students who excelled at the recent Manly Surf Lifesaving Club Carnival. This is one<br />

of the bigger Carnivals around so these results are outstanding.<br />

In the U13's, Grace Gurr came 5th in Iron Person, 2nd in Board and 5th in the Board Relay, and Mali Garling was 6th<br />

in Beach Sprint and 4th in Flags; In the U14's, Isaac Smith came 1st in Iron Person, 2nd in Surf Swim and 1st in the<br />

Board while Keelan Smith was 4th in the Beach Sprint and 3rd in Flags.<br />

FROM THE CAREERS AND TERTIARY ADVISOR<br />

Work Experience<br />

All the very best to the Year 10 students who will be attending Work Experience next week. I know that they will all<br />

be great ambassadors for our school, reflecting our school values. If there are any problems please email or phone<br />

Mrs Murray. Contact details and final instructions will be given to all Year 10 students on Thursday and Friday of this<br />

week, at the Year 10 study days.<br />

End of Year Program for Year 10<br />

Permission notes for the activities are due back to Mrs Murray as soon as possible. The first events are the Study<br />

Days, this Thursday and Friday. On Friday please remember that we will be taking a campus tour around the<br />

University of Sydney. Full, correct, tidy and neat uniform is required - especially shiny shoes!!! Looking forward to the<br />

program of events ahead.<br />

TPHS HSC LEGAL STUDIES AND THE CASE OF INSIDER TRADING<br />

Year 12 Legal Studies students were extremely fortunate to witness the operations of the adversarial system within<br />

the Supreme Court of NSW recently. Our students were able to observe a full day of court proceedings which focused<br />

on a case of insider trading. The charges for the criminal case were brought forth by Commonwealth DPP after a<br />

lengthy investigation by the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). Mr Todd Alexis SC (Chairman<br />

of the Board at TPHS) kindly arranged for our students to visit the Darlinghurst Court <strong>House</strong> to experience aspects of<br />

the criminal legal system at work.<br />

The excursion was carefully orchestrated, allowing students to witness a powerful cross-examination of the accused.<br />

Our students were then able to meet with both the Crown Prosecutor and the Defence Barrister during a short court<br />

recess, where they heard a short summation of the trial from both perspectives and were able to ask questions<br />

afterwards. The access to both Barristers made this excursion a particularly powerful experience for our Year 12<br />

Legal Studies students.<br />

In addition to this, Mr Alexis had also arranged for the Honourable Justice McCallum to speak with the students<br />

regarding her role as a Judge of the Supreme Court. She too made herself available for questions from our students.<br />

We feel most fortunate to have been involved in such a unique and valuable excursion. The experience <strong>Pittwater</strong><br />

<strong>House</strong> students enjoyed will not only enhance their understanding of legal pedagogy for the HSC, but will also have a<br />

great impact on their lifelong learning experience.<br />

YEAR 12 BUSINESS STUDIES VISIT TO PHARMACARE<br />

The Year 12 Business Studies class, accompanied by Mr Lawry and Ms Jeffery, were fortunate to visit the head office<br />

of PharmaCare in Warriewood last Tuesday. The visit was kindly organised by <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> parent Craig Dunlop<br />

who is the Operations manager for PharmaCare. This was an invaluable experience for all the students as it allowed<br />

them to see in a real world context much of the content that is covered in their first HSC topic of Operations. The<br />

students enjoyed a one hour presentation by Michael Halter, the Operations Director, who touched on the history,<br />

growth, product offerings and strategies employed by PharmaCare. They were then walked through the PharmaCare<br />

warehouse and saw all the challenges of running such a complex operation in particular in relation to technology,<br />

staffing, temperature control, customer demands and stock control.<br />

Term 1 2013<br />

All <strong>School</strong>s Triathlon – Nominations Due Week 1<br />

You can either enter a relay team or compete as an individual in the three following categories:<br />

Junior (12 – 14yrs): Swim 400m Bike 10km Run 3km<br />

Intermediate (15 – 16yrs): Swim 600m Bike 15km Run 4km<br />

Senior (17 – 19yrs): Swim 750m Bike 20km Run 5km<br />

Individual Events: Events will be held in all 3 age divisions on the day for Girls and Boys.<br />

Relay Events: Teams for each age and gender division. Three Athletes; one swimmer, one cyclist and one runner per<br />

relay team. Cyclists must bring their own bike.<br />

CIS Boys Baseball 17 Years and Under – Nominations Due Week 1<br />

Trials are for any male baseball players that are 17 Years and Under as at 1/6/13 that plays A grade or representative<br />

level baseball. A team of 15 will be selected from CIS schools to represent CIS at All <strong>School</strong>s.<br />

AICES Open Tennis – Nominations Due Week 1<br />

Trials are for both male and female players, 15 Years and over. Limited positions are available.<br />

AICES Nomination Policy: A maximum of 48 players will be admitted to each draw (boys and girls). This will consist<br />

of 8 pools of 5 and two pools of 4. All players with a current Australian ranking will be admitted to the draw first. This<br />

is followed by one player from each school. This process continues until each school is exhausted of players or all<br />

places are full. If a school has more than one nomination without a ranking they must list the rank order of those<br />

players to ensure the strongest are admitted to the draw first.<br />

CIS Girls Cricket 19 Years and Under – Nominations Due Week 1<br />

Trials are for any female player that is 19 Years and Under that plays A grade or representative level cricket. A team<br />

of 13 will be selected from CIS schools to represent CIS at All <strong>School</strong>s.<br />

CIS Girls and Boys Golf Open and Juniors (Years 7, 8 and 9) – Nominations Due Week 2<br />

Trials are both male and female players that are 18 Years and Under as at 31/12/13.<br />

All <strong>School</strong>s Canoeing – Nominations Due Week 5<br />

Students must be proficient in paddling and manoeuvring their craft in the conditions applying to events, can capsize<br />

and exit their boat wearing full gear (including spraydecks) and get themselves, their boat and paddle safely to shore<br />

without assistance.<br />

ATHLETICS<br />

Athletics Academy Special Notice<br />

In Week 8 our Athletics Coach Paul Bryon will be away and has organised alternative coaching and training days to<br />

make up to the Athletes.<br />

On Wednesday 5 December the Academy will be postponed to Monday 8 December. Times are as follows: 3.30 –<br />

4.30pm for Long Jump and Throws and 4.30 – 5.30pm for Hurdles and Middle distance. Please either contact Sue<br />

Barnett or Athletics Coach Paul Bryon if you have any concerns with this change.<br />

On Friday 7 December he has organised for an amazing coach Nick Bromley to come in and run the academy for that<br />

day. Nick Bromley is one of Australia’s middle distance champions and has competed in the 800M at the<br />

Commonwealth Games. The Friday training session will go ahead as planned 3.30 – 4.30pm for Sprint and Explosive<br />

power and 4.30 – 5.30pm for Speed Endurance. Nick will be coaching both these sessions.<br />

Little Athletics<br />

Congratulations to Katia and Elisa Molen-Grigull who participated in State relays at Homebush last Sunday. Katia's<br />

team got a bronze medal in High/Long jump and Elisa's team won gold. They also set a new state record in High/Long<br />

jump. Elisa won the High Jump with a new personal best of 1.65cm.<br />

BASKETBALL<br />

P6 v St Augustine’s Vikings (14 November). Won 37-14. The boys came onto the court all fired up and at half<br />

time they were in the lead 15-4. The boys remained on the attack throughout the game and Luca Franks had an<br />

exceptional game scoring 14pts, the most points a single player has scored all season. A great team effort. Top<br />

scorers: Luca Franks 14pts, Alex Giles 2pts, Kyle Thomlinson 2pts, Mason Gordon 2pts, Ruggiero Angelucci 2pts,<br />

Aaron Auld 4pts, Lachlan Batton 4pts plus 1ft, Samuel Wang 6pts.<br />

P6 v St Augustine’s Tigers (21 November). Won 26-12. It was a great effort by all the boys as by half time they<br />

were in the lead by 16-6. With great defence the boys held the opposition back and Samuel Wang had a great<br />

attacking game .Top scorers Samuel Wang 8pts, Mason Rutzou 6pts, Luca Franks 4pts, Aaron Auld and Ruggiero<br />

Angelucci both 2pts plus 1ft, Lachlan Batton 2pts.<br />

G9 v St Augustine’s Swifts (15 November). Won 36-5. Grammar 9 played against St. Augustine’s Swifts this<br />

week, winning convincingly 36-5. Congratulations to all of the team for playing as a team and gaining a great result.<br />

G10 Lakers v St Augustine's Trailblazers (16 November). Won 38-19. A fantastic game to watch with the boys<br />

displaying lots of skills practiced at training this week with new coach ex <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> student James Henderson.<br />

Matt Giles and Ben Chapman’s shooting were spot on with strong support from the rest of the team. Well done boys!<br />

MOSMAN SHIELD CRICKET<br />

Last Friday 23 November our Prep 1 st Cricket played Mosman Prep in our<br />

annual Cricket Match. Mosman batted first and in their 20 overs they scored<br />

140 for the loss of 4 wickets. Our top bowlers were: Luca Franks 0 for 15,<br />

Liam <strong>House</strong> 2 for 23, Mason Rutzou 1 for 11, Alex Giles 1 for 29 runs. Lucas<br />

Jennings, Reiley Dunlop and Luca Franks all took top catches during the<br />

Mosman innings. It was then our turn to bat and Mason Rutzou along with<br />

Liam <strong>House</strong> got our team off to a steady start with a partnership of 25 runs.<br />

We needed to score at a rate of 7 runs per over to reach the Mosman total<br />

and this was proving difficult for our batsmen as the Mosman bowlers were<br />

bowling very accurately from both ends. Our captain Luca Franks was our<br />

best batsman, Luca scored an impressive 40 runs retired to give our team<br />

some chance of reaching the challenging Mosman score of 140. Luca was<br />

the most impressive batsman on show from both teams on the day. Our boys reached the total of 7 wickets for 83<br />

runs at the end of our 20 overs. The boys tried their best and were great ambassadors for our school.<br />

Congratulations to Luca for his top batting and captaincy on the day. May many of our team members continue to<br />

play this great game of Cricket for years to come as we certainly have several potential First Grade players<br />

developing their skills in our team this season.<br />

TEEBALL<br />

J1/2 Angelfish (10 November). Won 28-23. Player with Best Team Spirit during the game: Jade Clarke. Player<br />

with best attitude whilst training: Siobhan Phelan.<br />

J1/2 Angelfish (17 November). Lost 19-21. Player with Best Team Spirit during the game: Annaliese McLean.<br />

Player with best attitude whilst training: Lulu La Ganza. The girls have certainly improved with their overarm throws,<br />

in both accuracy, strength and direction. Our next goal will be understanding to throw to any base in order to get a<br />

player out as well as learning how to tag a player.<br />

J1/2 Angelfish (24 November). Lost 20-21. What an exciting day the Tee ball Angelfish had on Saturday. They<br />

enjoyed a very close game against the Poppies losing by a narrow margin 21-20. Apparently the game was packed up<br />

incredibly quickly as they were all so excited to return to school on a Saturday… for our Festival of the <strong>House</strong>! A<br />

special mention must go to Siobhan Phelan who managed to get two of the opposing team out as well as Anna Hurst<br />

who also had a great game. Many thanks to all the parents who pitched in to help in my absence on Saturday, due to<br />

the festival. Also a great big thank you, to Mr Jason Day who stepped up to the plate, as coach for the day. Many<br />

hands make light work and skilled players. A HUGE THANK YOU.<br />

PITTWATER HOUSE PARENTS ASSOCIATION SECOND HAND TEXTBOOK SALE<br />

Once again, the <strong>Pittwater</strong> <strong>House</strong> Parents Association will be organising a Second hand textbook sale at the end of the<br />

school year for books used in Years 7-11, plus some for Year 12. This means you will have a chance to sell and<br />

purchase second hand textbooks before completing your online textbook order for 2013. Any textbooks for sale can<br />

be dropped off at school and will be sold by volunteers from the PHPA committee. For the sale to be a success we<br />

need both sellers and buyers.<br />

Some textbooks have been updated and cannot be resold for use in 2013. Please consult the 2013 official booklist<br />

available on the Campion website before bringing textbooks to school for sale. All books will be sold at approximately<br />

50% of the original price, depending on the condition, and the PHPA will retain $9 per book. Those wishing to sell<br />

their textbooks should complete the attached form and submit it along with their textbooks. All payments will be<br />

made during December/January for those textbooks that have sold and any textbooks not sold will be retained at the<br />

Clothing Pool and Second Hand Book Shop on consignment.<br />

Drop off: Monday 3 December 12.50pm-3:30pm - Second hand textbooks can be delivered to NG1 (Drama<br />

Room at bottom of Science block) ready for the sale. Ensure the textbooks are in a good condition, the name of the<br />

current owner is clearly visible on the textbook, the CD's included, and the Book Receipt form completed. A copy of<br />

the Book Receipt can be found on the following page.<br />

Purchases: Tuesday 4 December 8am-9.30am and 2pm-3.30pm – Second hand textbooks will be available for<br />

sale from room NG1 (Drama Room at bottom of Science Block). Payment can be made in cash, cheque, or EFTPS.<br />
