From the Principal’s Desk
CITIUS ALTIUS FORTIUS?
As our eyes are focused on London and the Games of the XXX Olympiad, it
allows us a moment to pause on some of the many messages we can take
from this reflection. The games are additionally about diversity, complexity
and inevitably, inequality. Each is a consequence of our 21 st century world
and must be studied and understood within our school curriculum.
We are increasingly more conscious of difference or diversity in our
community than at any time in our past. This is surely reflected in the
composition of our Olympic team just as it is in our neighbourhood, school or
classroom. Whilst this diversity is present, so too is the extent of complexity
we face daily. Our once clear interpretation of issues is now far more likely to
be challenged and our classrooms certainly encourage all to have an opinion
as the team of students and teachers battle over shades of grey in opinion
formation. And of course, globalization is providing a greater sense of
winners and losers than perhaps at any other time in history. Yes, we are
seeing how unequal is the opportunity for success despite our desire for a
repeat of the example set by Eric the Eel of Equatorial Guinea in the
swimming pool at the Sydney Olympics…
Each of these elements offers us at Pittwater House both challenge and
scope. We are undeniably a community of global citizens and from this our
classrooms benefit from the diversity of backgrounds therein where we are
able to examine ideas that challenge, and thus enjoy its complexity. I trust
our difference, enshrined in our unique structure of twin schooling, allows us
to celebrate difference continually. You, the families of Pittwater House not
only recognise, but accept, welcome, enjoy and celebrate our being. We are
so fortunate to have this variety. Our 6 th Core Value, democracy, allows us to
explore new ideas which are less likely to emerge if they are part of a group
of similarly-minded students. Similarly this challenge encourages students to
step beyond their comfort zone to embrace complexity and from this take an
understanding of self to new levels. I trust too that our community ensures a
greater understanding of interdependence where our lives are enriched, our
political debate fine-tuned and determination to challenge ignorance ignited.
Whilst we will chant Aussie Aussie Aussie in the coming days, let us also
acknowledge and appreciate those within our community whose first
allegiance is to another tune… understanding too, that their patriotism is as
valid as ours and we are the richer for this good natured banter.
FASTER, HIGHER, STRONGER… AT PITTWATER HOUSE
Whilst writing with a background of sport, I
wish to acknowledge the outstanding
performance of Pascalle Casey who has
returned from Hungary as part of the
Olympic Hopes Water polo team; a team
that came 4 th in this recent competition.
Pascalle, like Fraser McTavish in Kayaking, is
not only a member of a national team
competing at international meets, but both
students are about to undertake their HSC
Trial examinations. We wish them and all
HSC students every success in this key part
of their academic program.
PRINCIPAL’S HONOURS MORNING TEA
It was a delight to share with the families of 37 of
our students, their academic success in Semester
One. At the Principal’s Honours Morning Tea held
this week, not only were we able to acknowledge
the outstanding commitment of these students,
but to state that this happens due to the strong
and ongoing partnership between home and
school. These fine young members of the Pittwater
House community have not only brought credit to
themselves and their families; they have been
encouraged to support and ensure that this group
is even larger at the end of year celebration. My
congratulations to each of these students.
PITTWATER HOUSE 2012 ART PRIZE
All students are to be commended on their submissions. The collection was outstanding and augurs well for continuing
focus and achievement in the visual arts. How would you rate these examples of student work?
LE DINER FRANÇAIS 2012
The French Dinner will be held on Tuesday 4 September from 6-9pm in the Hall. This will be a
wonderful evening for the school community to experience a slice of French culture. There will be
student performances from all years and a menu ‘à la française’. Please keep this date free in your
diary. More information will be posted in the coming weeks in HouseNews, on MyHouse as well as
notes sent home with the students.
A bientôt!
PHPA COPACABANA FIESTA
The PHPA would like to inform the parents of the school that the South American themed evening has been cancelled.
The decision to cancel was not taken lightly but the deposit for the catering and DJ had to be paid in advance and
without sufficient tickets purchased this was not possible. As a committee we feel quite sad to have had to cancel,
especially when it looked like a fun evening for all, but without the support of the school families we had no other
choice.
We would like to especially thank the following families for their kind donations for the ‘Auction of Promises’:
Finally we would also like to thank the sub-committee for the time and effort they put into organising this fund raising
event, and Mr Cosentino and Mrs Mitakos for agreeing to perform for us on the night.
NOTES FROM THE CHAPLAIN
In chapel this term we will be looking at the spread of Christianity during the first century and how it came across to
England during that time. Could I also remind all those who are interested in being Confirmed into the Anglican faith
to please see me so that your name could be included on the class list.
I was advised recently that Kylie Nicholas died last week and a service was conducted on the Central Coast. Kylie left
the school in 1989 and was a much loved and respected member of the school.
A reminder that we are still looking for Alumni to be included in the data base here at school. There will be an Alumni
Christmas Cocktail Party here at school on Tuesday 13 November between 6 and 8pm.
SAIL TRAINING EXPEDITION - JANUARY 2013
After very successful trips in 2007 and 2010, once again students from the
Senior school will have an opportunity next January to join a 5 day Sailing trip
on the Queensland Sail Training Association’s ‘MV. South Passage’, a 20m twin
masted schooner. The trip will depart from Darling Harbour and run from
Monday 7 to Friday 11 January and includes all food and accommodation. This is
a unique experience and has been so good that we even have keen sailors
signing up already to come along a second time! No sailing experience is
necessary to take part, but all participants will be active members of a ‘Watch’
on board and will learn how to handle the ropes, steer, and navigate. Along the
way, we may visit the uninhabited Broughton Island (off Port Stephens) or we
may visit Newcastle or Port Hacking. With luck, we will get the chance to do
some exciting night sailing, or perhaps watch some porpoises as well as
exploring some of the remote bays around Pittwater and Broken Bay, and of course there are also plenty of
opportunities to swim and relax when off watch, or to just chill out on deck with a guitar. The trip will be accompanied
by Mrs Fran White and Mr Peter Fathers and further information may be obtained from either one of us, or you can
take a look at the website: www.southpassage.org.au. The total cost of the trip is $847, and a non-refundable
deposit of $200 is due by 15 August to secure a berth on this trip. We look forward to welcoming you aboard!
Junior School News
FROM THE HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
Kindergarten
Kindergarten has had an exciting start to Term 3, enjoying an
excursion to see a theatre production of Peter Rabbit, as well as
celebrating their 100 th Day of Kindergarten. The students reflected on
the play by writing interesting recounts to capture the highlights of
the day. Chloe Davis said ‘I loved the show. I couldn’t believe it that
Mr McGregor had stilts and big shoes’. Ted Chambers thought the
show was very funny and enjoyed the part when Fox tricked Badger
with a bucket of water.
Their 100 th Day of Kindergarten involved the students participating in
numeracy and literacy games based around the number 100. The
afternoon was spent presenting homemade projects which
represented 100. The variety of projects was fascinating, some
examples include a beaded necklace using Pittwater House colours, a
giant trophy, a medal, cookies in the shape of 100 and, posters and
dioramas all using 100 objects, such as marbles, shells and Lego
pieces. What clever Kindergarten students we have!
Sydney Swans Visit Years 3 and 4
Last Tuesday Year 3 and Year 4 were very privileged to have a visit
from two Sydney Swans players. Jesse White and Jordan Lockyer
came to visit Pittwater House after their morning training session at
Moore Park. The students were all very excited when they arrived and
could not wait to hear what they had to say. The players spoke about
their love of sport growing up as boys and how their love of AFL then
became their profession. The students were given ‘insider information’
HouseNews Issue 2012 / 13 Page 5 of 10

as to what it is like to play for the Swans, the type of training that is involved and the diet they need to follow. Jordan
explained ‘drafting’ and how you need to be prepared to relocate interstate should you get a call up. The students had
the opportunity to ask questions; for example, ‘Can you describe the feeling of running onto the SCG in front of a full
stadium?’ We wished the players well for the remainder of the season and hope to be cheering them on come the
finals.
It is wonderful to see so many parents on campus during the evening this week meeting with their child’s teacher at
the parent teacher interviews. These interviews offer opportunities for the teachers to discuss the personal goals they
have for your child as they progress through the second semester.
This week Year 4 are preparing for their excursion to the Long Reef Rock Platform Coastal Reserve to support their
study of the way we use our coastal environment for leisure and recreation. They are endeavouring to learn about
enjoying these beautiful areas without damaging the natural features and life forms that make them unique.
On Wednesday morning PK and JK students will play host to parents of the current ECC Possums to show them just
how grown up you need to be in Kindergarten. The parents of Kindergarten 2013 will attend an informative
presentation about readiness and expectations for their upcoming debut as Kindy parents.
On Thursday the NED show will visit K-6 students presenting the message of being a champion who Never gives up,
Encourages others and Does their best. This supports our pastoral time messages as well as being aptly timed for the
Olympics and our Book Week theme ‘Champions Read.’
Mrs Ruth Achurch, Head of Junior School
INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS
Olivia Cuthbert (J4) competed in the Sydney Eisteddfod during the June/July holidays and was
awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in her section – Vocal Performance (9/u) for Contemporary Singing.
This was her first Eisteddfod performance and her result augurs well for her future. We are all very
proud of her fabulous achievement! Olivia sang ‘Wasn’t it Good’ by Tina Arena.
Mrs Stephanie Cockerton, Year 4 Teacher
Secondary School News
FROM THE HEAD OF GRAMMAR
We have started the Term with a busy few weeks. Last week saw the Athletics Carnival, a camp briefing, the Annual
Art Prize and a Year 8 subject selection evening all taking place on successive days. This week sees Year 11
parent/teacher interviews on Tuesday and a morning tea for High Academic Achievers on Wednesday. As luck would
have it the cold weather has hit us ahead of the Outdoor Education Group camp for Years 8, 9 and 10 in Week 4 (next
week). The camps take place in the Southern Highlands and are always an enjoyable week of activities and team
building. At the same time, Year 12 will be busy with their Trial Examinations and we wish them all the best of luck
for this, the final part of the School based component of their HSC. The School will be very quiet next week with only
a skeleton staff and Years 7 and 11 on campus. Our Year 11 cohort have begun the process for selection as a School
Prefect; I hope families have been discussing the implications and the responsibilities involved before students apply
for the role. Each applicant will face an interview with the Heads of School and the Principal, and an ‘election’ speech,
before peers and staff members cast their votes. Of course, all this is happening at the same time as the Olympics
(which is playing havoc with my sleep patterns!). Miss Stacey Birch is in London supporting her partner, Kynan Maley,
who is paddling a C1 and C2 kayak in the Slalom Kayak competition. At the time of writing he had qualified for the
final after finishing in 12 th place in the preliminary round and I am sure everyone here wishes him the best of luck for
the finals. I am always inspired by the feats of the athletes at the Games and I urge all members of the School
community to join me in the annual Pub2Pub Fun Run and Walk on Sunday 26 August, from Dee Why to Newport.
This is a great opportunity to enjoy the sights of the Northern Beaches and appreciate how lucky we are to live here,
whilst at the same time supporting a charity. Please sign up online at www.pub2pub.com.au and select the Pittwater
House team when you enter. I look forward to seeing you all there.
INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS
Congratulations to Finn Gilbert (G8) on gaining selection to the Yachting NSW Youth Sailing Team and being
awarded an NSW Institute of Sport Scholarship for Sailing. This comes after consistently high placings in a number of
different sailing classes over the last couple of years. Finn comes from a family with a long tradition of sailing and it is
great to see him continuing this tradition.
Congratulations to Kelsey Dunlop (C10) on her recent outstanding Tennis results. During the holidays she
reached the doubles final of the Sydney Junior Championships. Unfortunately, rain on the last day meant the final was
cancelled; however, she backed up the next week by making her way through the field at the Gosford Silver Open to
reach the singles consolation final. Last week she entered the Macquarie University Open Competition in the doubles
event. Kelsey and her partner beat the number two seeded team in the semi-finals and then won the final against the
number one seeded pair, an outstanding achievement.
Mr Mark Page, Head of Grammar
MANSW TALENTED STUDENTS DAY AT MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY
The Mathematics Association of NSW held its annual Talented Students Day for
Extension 2 Mathematics students from across the State at Macquarie University on
18 July. Six students from Year 12 at Pittwater House; Ryan Hirsch, Robin Molen-
Grigull, Conan Omori, Ruby Wu, Jerry Zhang and Tim Zhang, attended the day along
with Mrs White, and were introduced to some mind-bending Mathematics not usually
encountered at school. We explored topics including ‘Calculus of the Surface’,
looking at 3-D maxima and minima problems such as the ‘egg-box’ surface shown
here, ‘Maths with a Difference’ exploring new ways of using factorials, and even
‘Probability, Matrices and Game theory’. Useful revision sessions were also held on
HSC topics, throwing new light on Complex Numbers, Conics and Volumes. A nonstop
day of lectures gave everyone an insight of what to expect at University, and an
excellent introductory address outlined career possibilities in Mathematics, but also
stressed the universally applicable careers message; ‘Choose what you’re passionate
about’ at university. All voted the day as tough but very worthwhile!
SDN DEBATING
Last Friday Pittwater House attended Wenona School to compete in the SDN Debating competition. The debating
coaches are happy to see the Junior, Middle, Intermediate and Senior teams working well together and supporting
each other within their individual debates.
We would like to especially congratulate both the Year 7 and Year 8 Junior teams that were both able to succeed in
arguing their case against the topic: ‘Technology is ruining our communication skills.’ On Friday the Year 7 team
included students: Elliot Milijasevic, Benjamin Rees, Oliver Rees and Aidan Murphy as team advisor. While the Year 8
team included students: Russia Christensen, Bianca Keating, Jordan Howes, and Molly Hurst as team advisor.
Both teams commendably argued some interesting points and a mention should be given in regards to all teams’
consistent effort in assisting with rebuttals and preparations before the debate. The students’ confidence and speaking
manner is improving immensely with each round and we are very proud of their continuing efforts.
Congratulations to the Year 10 team comprising Sebastian Davies-Mills, Benjamin Blackshaw, Thomas Bruinjius and
Tamsin Delaney who won their debate on the topic ‘That we need tougher deterrents for illegal downloading on the
Internet.’ This team also went through to the Preliminary Final in the HICES competition last Tuesday and although
they did not win the debate they have shown commitment and great team spirit.
Next week is a home debate against Roseville College on the topic area of Education. Please remember to attend the
coaching sessions on the designated day and also on Friday before the debate.
YEAR 9 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION
On 25 July, Year 9 went on a Geography excursion to Pyrmont to understand
the changing Australian communities over time. This included seeing the
renewal of buildings in the Pyrmont area from old factory buildings to new
luxurious high rise apartments looking over Darling Harbour. Year 9 also
visited the Maritime Museum to research and view artefacts from World War
2. It was a fantastic day with great weather and engaged students.
School Sports
ATHLETICS ACADEMY
Thirty-four Pittwater House students from Year 1 to Year 10 are involved in this very new and exciting Academy. The
athletes are all showing great enthusiasm and this is resulting in some great training sessions with very pleasing
results. As the weather is getting colder each week, I must insist everyone brings warm clothes to put on at the end
of the sessions. This is useful to aid muscle recovery as well as keeping you from getting cold and sick. There is a
distinct lack of drink bottles at training. Even in the cold weather, your body uses a lot of fluid during training and it is
essential that everyone stays hydrated. Please make sure you have a full drink bottle at the start of every session.
Thank you to the parents for your support. It is nice to see the athletes wanting to show mum and dad how much
they have learned or improved. I look forward to seeing how much more talent we can unearth as the program
continues.
Mr Paul Byron, Athletics Coach
Athletics NSW
Congratulations to Amity Delaney (C12) who has been selected by NSW Athletics to compete in their team at the
National Cross Country Championships in Adelaide in August.
BASKETBALL
Basketball Academy, The basketball academy offers basketball skill training for individuals through a variety of
standard and custom training programs for students from Year 3 to Year 12. The Academy offers group training in the
following categories: shot mechanics, ball handling, offensive footwork, defensive movement and positioning,
offensive movement and post play footwork and movement. In 2012 the basketball academy students have been
working hard on the above skills and improvement has been noted by all. As a young athlete, it can be hard these
days to keep up with everyone around you. From trainers to equipment to access to coaching, it is always a battle to
keep up with the next guy. Growing up around sports, I know what it's like, and looking back on my growth as an
athlete, I always wish someone would have taken more time to teach me the way to play the games I loved the right
way, right from the start! This is what I try to do with athletes I work with in training. I impart to them all of the
skills and information I have learned through over 30 years of dedication to the game of basketball. My approach is
always the same—to make young players the best they can be.
If you are interested in joining the Basketball Academy please see Ms Barnett. The Academy is on Thursday
afternoons from 3.30–4.30pm for Years 3-6 and 4.30–5.30pm for Years 7-12.
Mr Brad Dalton, Dual Olympian
P6 v St Augustine’s Giants (25 July). Won 12-7. The boys have commenced the competition of division 2 with a
great win. With great defence work they were able to hold back the opposition and obtained an extra basket due to 8
fouls imposed by the opposition. Top scores of the game were Luca Franks shooting 6 points, Ruggiero Angelucci and
Alex Giles both shooting 3 points. Great start to the competition, keep up the great effort boys. The next two
scheduled games are against St Augustine’s Wizards on 1 August at 6pm and against Covenant Christian on 8 August
at 5.15pm.
G8. The next two scheduled games are against St Pauls on 1 August at 6.10pm and St Augustine’s Spurs on 22
August at 4.30pm. There is a bye on the 15 August. All games are being played at Narrabeen Sports High.
4.20pm and St Pauls on 16 August at 5.10pm both games will be held at Narrabeen Sports High.
MOD LEAGUE
Junior Team 3/4 v John Colet. Won 11-0. The Junior Mod League played their first game of the season and had a
pleasing 11 - 0 victory over John Colet. The following boys ran strongly with the ball and were our try scorers: Liam
O’Hara 3, Kobe Fulton 2, Matthew Rose 2, Jordon Obst, Jack Whitehead, Max Garling and James Brock scored one try
each. Best tacklers were: Max Garling, Liam O’Hara, Kobe Fulton. Well played boys!
Senior Team 5/6 – Bye. Senior Mod League played a trial game against Oxford Falls. They showed some excellent
development from last season.
RUGBY
Junior Rugby 3/4. The first game of the season will be on Wednesday 15 August against Reddam House at Keirle
Park in Manly at 4pm.
Junior Rugby 5/6. The first game of the season will be on Monday 6 August against St Lukes at Pittwater House at
4pm.
U14B v Oxford Falls Grammar School (23 July). Lost 15-64. This was the first round of the U/14B Peninsula
Rugby Cup. The team was definitely a run short; however they tried very hard throughout the game, eventually going
down. Sol Henry’s bustling runs were a real highlight from the game and enabled us to score two of our three tries.
However, too many missed tackles and an inability to maintain possession proved costly throughout the match.
Training will continue on Monday mornings and our next scheduled game is against St Luke’s on 13 August.
U16B v Cromer Campus (23 July). The U16 team ended up having a bye with the Cromer Campus team
withdrawing from the competition. The next game is a home game on 1 August against St Lukes at 4pm. Training will
continue to be on Wednesday mornings before school on the school oval.
SOCCER
Junior College 3/4 v John Colet. Lost 0-2. The girls played an awesome game. The game was fast and there was
a lot of skill shown by everyone. Isabella Lorenzo (J4) was our best player, while Renata Ferreira (J4) also played a
good game. Our new recruit Olivia Revelle-Reade (J4) was awesome in defence and our goalkeeper Emily Zhou (J4)
made some brilliant saves. We will work on our passing game and work harder to get to the ball first. Well done team.
Junior College 5/6 v John Colet (27 July). Lost 1-6. In spite of having practised only once together, the girls
managed to score a goal. The game was very even in terms of possession, but the opposition managed to get all the
way to the goal more often than us. The girls are really looking forward to working on some new skills and strategies,
and they have been practising hard whenever they have the time.
C7. Due to other commitments the Pittwater House College 7 soccer team has been withdrawn from the competition,
those players who are still keen to play have been invited to join the Year 8 team and will start training with them on
14 August. If you are in Year 7 and would like to play in the Year 8 team please see Ms Barnett.
C8 v Stella Maris. Lost 1-4. TPHS played an exciting game against Stella Maris on Tuesday afternoon. The highlight
of the game was undoubtedly Molly Hurst’s goal. She skilfully kicked the ball over the head of 4 defenders plus the
goalie and landed the ball in the corner pocket. Well done Molly. The final score was 1-4 to Stella who played a fair
and consistent game. The next scheduled game is against Northern Beaches Secondary College (home game) on the
14 August. Training will continue to be on Tuesday mornings before school on the school oval.
C9/10 v St Lukes. Lost 1-13. TPHS played a tough match against St Lukes who showed plenty of skill and
experience all game. Tamsin Delaney worked tirelessly all game saving as many goals as she could. Our one and only
goal was very exciting. Better luck next week girls. The next two scheduled games are against Northern Beaches
Secondary College (away game) on the 2 August and Oxford Falls Grammar School (home game) on the 16 August.
Training will continue to be on Thursday mornings before school.
WATER POLO
G7 v St Lukes Blue. Drew 3-3. This was a wonderful start to the Season for the team and for Coaches Jonathan
Brooke and Huw Griffiths, particularly considering this was, for most players, their first experience of Water Polo ever.
What the boys lacked in skills was more than made up for in enthusiasm.
G8/6 v Mater College. Won 9-2. With several players missing due to illness we were able to experiment with a
variety of positional changes. Every player contributed in a clear victory.
C7 v Brigidine. Won 8-7. Well done to the whole team everyone played very well indeed. For your first game it was
so good to have a win and everyone enjoyed themselves so much. Don’t forget to be at the pool Friday morning for
practice.
