The Henry Carl Peter and Wilhelmine Boell Sporleder Family
Henry Carl Peter was born March 15, 1865, in Nindorf, Amt. Luneburg, Hanover, Germany and migrated to the United States in March 16,
1871, with his parents. They initially settled in Peotone, Illinois where Henry received his education and was confirmed into the Lutheran
faith.1 The parents moved to Carroll County, Iowa in 1879 or 1880 where they farmed and Henry followed one year later.
Wilhelmine Boell was born January 28, 1872, in Mecklenburg, Germany. Her parents were John Henry and Maria Pluckhahn Boell.2 She
came to America with her parents when she was about one year old. She was customarily called Minnie. The family originally settled in
Lyons, New York and moved to Carroll County, Iowa in 1884.
On May 23, 1890, Henry Carl was married to Minnie Boell by Rev. C. F. Hermann, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Carroll, Iowa. They
initially lived on a farm near Carroll. In 1903, they moved to a farm near Galesburg, Neosha County, Kansas where they lived until 1914.
They returned to a Carroll County farm where they lived seven years. They later lived on two different farms in Calhoun County, Iowa near
Lake City. Their children include Laura Francis Katherine, Emma Wilhelmine, Carl Henry, Albert Arthur, Clara Marie, Ernest Walter, Cora,

and Waldo. Cora was born in March of 1911 but died four months later in June of 1911. All of the other children are now deceased except
Ernest Walter and Waldo.
Henry Carl and Minnie were co-founders of the Lake City Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Their youngest two sons, Ernest and Waldo, who lived
with them then were also co-founding members.3
On September 16, 1930, Henry fell backwards onto his head from a wagon on which he was loading hay. He suffered a broken back and
died September 21, 1930, at the age of 65. At the time of his death, the local newspaper remarked, "He was an honest, earnest man, and
was held in high esteem by all who knew him." Henry was buried in the Carroll City Cemetery.
After Henry's death, Minnie lived with her son, Ernest. On December 18, 1934, Minnie died at age 61. A funeral service for the family was
held at the home of her son, Carl, with final services in the Lake City Lutheran Church. At the time of her death, the local newspaper
commented, "She was a good mother, and a woman of admired traits." She was buried in the Carroll City Cemetery.1
The Trip to America
While coming over to America by boat when she was less than a year old, Wilhelmine Boell ran a high fever. If the ship's medic or doctor
thought anyone had a communicable disease, the person would be thrown overboard to prevent the spread of the disease to others. Her
parents obtained some ice from the ship's mess (kitchen) to pack in her crib to keep her temperature down and thus prevented Wilhelmine
from running a fever with the ominous consequence.
The Money Changer
When Wilhelmine Boell's parents, John Henry and Maria Boell, arrived at the immigration port in New York City, it was necessary for them to
exchange their money for American currency. It was a common practice for the currency changers to cheat the new arrivals. When John
Henry protested that he was short-changed, the currency changer drew a pistol and told him to move on.
The Boell family did not have enough money to go to their hoped for destination in the Midwest. They were stranded at the New York port
until a man arrived looking for workers on his farm near Lyons, New York. He hired John Henry and Maria to work on his farm. They worked
there for about eleven years and later continued their journey to the Midwest
