Message from Commissioner Ian Stewart
As everyone is aware the Queensland Police Service is
undergoing change and the effect it will have on
Bundaberg District is not known at the present time.
Commissioner Stewart has indicated that “It is a
testament to the resilience of the organisation that we
haven’t lost sight of the core duties of making
Queensland safer and more secure.”
He personally spoke with QPS members at the
Bundaberg Police Station on Monday 14 January 2013.
Information on the state wide changes can be found at
Clandestine Drug Labs
Drug labs pose a risk to the safety and security of all Queenslanders. The
ingredients used in drug labs to produce illicit drugs are highly toxic, flammable, and
incredibly dangerous. Drug labs explode, ignite and emit harmful gases that can
cause serious health problems and can be life-threatening.
The State Drug Investigation Unit (SDIU) is a specialist investigative unit which has
responsibility for conducting and assisting in investigations of serious drug offences
including the production of dangerous drugs and possession of drug lab equipment.
The SDIU is responsible for safely dismantling drug labs. Our message should you
locate or suspect a drug lab:
GET OUT
STAY OUT
CALL POLICE
Never touch items you suspect are drug related. If you suspect a drug lab is
present, do not enter the premises. If already inside or near a drug lab then leave
immediately and contact police.
More information including photographs of what a drug lab can look like can be
found at http://www.police.qld.gov.au/programs/druglabs/
The Fifth Factor
One of the most distracting factors
held accountable is using mobile
phones while driving, especially
texting or typing. Even interaction
with a hands free mobile phone
while driving is four times more
likely to result in a serious crash.
Acting Superintendent Paul Fogg
from STSB said mobile devices,
whether you are talking on the
phone, texting or checking your
emails are a physical, cognitive and
visual distraction.
“Driving requires all of your senses
to be alert and focused”
“One slight error, or one second
lagging in your reaction time can
result in tragic circumstances –
serious injury or fatality, as well as
mental trauma and grief”.
myPoliceQPS news 16 January 2013
The new Fatal 5 police cars.
myPolice Maryborough 11 January 2013
District Officer’s Report – Superintendent Rowan Bond APM
Happy New Year to all of you and I hope you had a Christmas/New Year break that
was to your expectation. I trust that your break was one that was safe, and did not
include too much overeating. Police in Bundaberg District were very busy over the
holiday period, dealing with a significant number of major incidents and disturbances.
We unfortunately had a fatality on our roads in the period between Christmas and
New Year. It occurred on the Isis Highway near the Pine Creek Road area. While
the circumstances of the incident are still being investigated, the incident none the
less meant that a family is grieving the unnecessary loss of their loved one. The
deaths on the road are a needless waste of life, and I implore you to be careful on
the roads and survive 2013.
On that note, do you know that there is now the Fatal 5 of Road safety? There used
to be Speed, Fatigue, Drink Driving and Failing to Wear your Seat belt. Now
Inattention/Distraction has now been added to this list. The new one includes
offences like using a hand held mobile phone while driving as well as all those habits
like changing CDs, looking for change in the console and other distractions. These
activities are responsible for deaths and injury on the road. Please ensure that
100% of your attention is on your driving. It is a rather complex task and failure to
keep your mind/eyes and actions on the job can result in disaster.
There has been a large amount of media time expended on the news regarding the
restructure of the Queensland Police Service. The Service is commencing a major
physical and philosophical restructure, the largest since the immediate post
Fitzgerald era. The restructure will drastically change the reporting and hierarchical
structure of the QPS. The restructure is calculated to take advantage of advances in
technology and to enhance front line policing to the community. Together with the
increases in police numbers announced, this restructure should result in increased
presence on the road and out in the community. Please note that the proposed
changes will not result in any change to how you report matters to the police or
diminish their ability to respond to your calls for service. Please be certain of the fact
that the police in Bundaberg District will continue to offer the same high quality,
professional response to your calls for service.
Thank you for your support and please stay safe and secure.
Fraser Island Driver Information
Just because there aren’t any roadways, markings or designated areas (particularly
on the eastern side of the island) in which motorists are to drive on, doesn’t mean
that you as a motorist or passenger can break the law.
All too often people become complacent about road rules while on Fraser Island.
Please remember that the same road rules apply on the island as they would the
mainland. This also applies to the beaches on the mainland for example: Double
Island Point, Teewah Beach, Noosa North Shore and other beaches/inland
roadways.
Recently Fraser Island Police have intercepted motorists for offences of:
Speeding
Seatbelts
Drink Driving
Passengers/Drivers with body parts outside the vehicle.
There will be no exceptions, Police will be patrolling the beaches and inland
roadways to ensure the safety of motorists and beachgoers (camping or using the
beaches).
Disaster Preparedness
Bundaberg Regional Council
recently had a novel way of
reminding the community about
being ready for the storm, cyclone
and bushfire seasons that are upon
us.
With the support of McDonalds
they printed Be Prepared … tray
placemats to ensure this message
reaches the wider community, and
is hopefully acted upon.
Winners can collect their prize by contacting the venue.
Once again the campaign received positive feedback with one driver commenting
that ‘this was the best ticket they have ever received’.
The aim of the project is to promote responsible driving and remind drivers that if
they plan to drink, plan not to drive - use a designated driver or taxi instead. Liquor
Accord members plan to run the campaign again during the 2013 Christmas
holidays.
Safer Internet Day is organised by Insafe each year in February to promote safer
and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially
amongst children and young people across the world.
Last year, Safer Internet Day took place on Tuesday 7 February 2012 and was
centred around the theme of connecting generations and educating each other, with
the slogan: "Discover the digital world together... safely!"
This topic looked at the reach of the online world across all generations and cultures
and encouraged families to work together to stay safe online. Whether you are 5, 40
or 75 years old, whether you use the internet once a month or several times a day -
each person has something different to bring to the table that can help shape our
online experiences and our understanding of online competences and safety. We all
have a role to play in ensuring that every child is safe online.
Today our offline and online worlds are strongly connected, from families
communicating via webcam with relatives and friends abroad to children doing their
homework online. The online world is a unique arena where people of all ages can
learn together and from each other, especially regarding online safety. Tech savvy
youngsters can teach their elders how to use new technologies, while grandparents
can draw on their life experiences to advise younger generations on how to stay safe
online, as they discover the digital world together.
Safer Internet Day 2013 will take place on Tuesday February 5, 2013. As this will
be the10th Internet Safety Day it is hoped to make it bigger and better than ever
before. The theme is Online rights and responsibilities and the slogan is
"Connect with respect".
Bundaberg NHW 11 Free BBQ and Community Day
January 4, 2013 at 2:23 pm
This is Bundaberg’s first entry on the NHWQ blog ( www.nhwq.org/page/2/ ).
Congratulations from the State Office of NHWQ and Bundaberg Police to the
Bundaberg NHW 11 – Avenell Heights East for successfully holding their inaugural
BBQ and Community Day on December 1, 2012 at Boreham Park, Avenell Heights.
The Community Day was a great success with a free BBQ and drinks, kids activities,
a jumping castle, face painting and a visit from Sergeant Marty Arnold (Officer in
Charge, Traffic) in one of the local ‘Fatal 4’ traffic vehicles. A great day was had by
all!
Any information on crimes can be
reported anonymously to
Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000
Thank you to Senior Constable Amanda Dohrman (NHW Liaison Officer NHW11) for
encouraging her group to become more active in the community. Thank you also to
local businesses, the Bundaberg Regional Council and PCYC Blazers youth group
for contributing to the success of the day.
Did you know…?

A local officer has advised of a possible crime deterrent for recent thefts of fuel,
but could have many other uses. Battery operated audible alarm padlocks
that come in various sizes. Some have cables so a few items can be secured
together, but on movement of the padlock or cutting of the cable an audible
alarm sounds. There is a short time delay to allow for routine unlocking.
These locks are being purchased by councils overseas to on sell to ratepayers
to curb the theft of heating oil in winter. Although police cannot
promote/endorse any retail product, the principal of this product appears to be
very good.
The following is an extract from a myPolice Dutton Park article published on
January 11, 2013 which provides a different perspective on home and personal
security from the Officer in Charge.
Hi folks,
Really how is your mail box?
The reason I am asking you to take note
of the general condition of your mailbox is
that recently my officers have
apprehended a suspicious person in our
area with mail clearly not theirs. During
the course of the investigation we
discovered that the mailboxes the
property was stolen from were in either
poor condition or couldn’t be locked or a combination of both.
The crooks are looking for credit cards in particular but anything else they can
use to establish a false ID for their illegal purposes.
If you live in a block of apartments, you need to make sure the managers of
your apartment building have this sorted!
Check your mailbox.
Did you know police really do have a sense of humour…!
Some of the quotes below have come from the QPS Facebook
page over the past few days and show a different side to the
QPS. The public is questioning whether someone really gets
paid to write this stuff! Witty responses from the public have also
been included. These should bring a smile to your face …
