are intended as a general guideline to help steer you in the

Planning and Budgeting Your Pond
Selecting the pond type
There are many things to consider when deciding to add a pond to a home. Planning ahead will not only prevent mistakes but will also save time and money. To help make
certain of lasting success, the following should be established up-front:
• How much can be spent
• How much space is being allocated for the pond or water feature
• What kind of pond/water feature is desired (liner, pre-form, self-contained or waterfall)
• Final size of the pond
• Will the pond incorporate fish or plants, or both
Selecting the equipment
Once the desired pond size and type has been determined, be sure to choose equipment that best suits its unique requirements.
Basic pond equipment required:
LINER OR PRE-FORMS
Liners provide the flexibility to build a pond in any desired shape, while
pre-forms are an ideal choice when space and time are limited.
FILTERS
Filter type and capacity will depend on size and location of the pond, as
well as the quantity of plants & fish being incorporated.

PUMPS
To select the correct pump size, determine the pond’s volume. It is recommended
that the water in a pond be circulated at least once every 2 hours. Therefore, the
pump should have a GPH rating of at least half of the pond size.
HOSING, CONNECTORS, AND CLAMPS
The “nuts and bolts” of any pond system, choose equipment accessories
that ensure quick and easy installation.
UV STERILIZERS/CLARIFIERS
Incorporate a UV to ensure crystal clear water. It is the environmentally
friendly approach towards controlling green water.
LIGHTING & POND ACCESSORIES
Help enhance & maintain the beauty of a pond by incorporating lighting
and accessories.
Things to further consider are:
Price - invest in good quality pond equipment at the onset, trying to save by purchasing a more economical system or equipment that seems like a great
deal may seem like a wise decision, however inexpensive equipment often requires extensive maintenance - costing time, effort, and money in
the long run.
Power consumption - establish the amount of electricity that the pond equipment will generate and account for their cost in the overall budget.
Maintenance - in general, most pond equipment requires some level of maintenance - consumers need to factor in the level of maintenance they are willing and
able to perform when selecting equipment.

Max-Flo Waterfall & Filter Pumps are designed to process water loaded with moderate amounts of suspended solids and transport them to suitable external filter systems
which then trap any debris that may potentially pollute pond water, effectively filtering the pond. They are completely submersible and generate continuous and reliable
water circulation and are suitable for multiple fresh-water pond applications including pressurized filters, surface skimming filters, filter falls, and for creating waterfalls and
watercourses.

Each of the PowerJet Fountain/Waterfall Pump Kits includes a energy efficient PowerJet pump, riser stem, two fountainheads, and two adjustable valves that control water
flow to the fountainhead and waterfall. The pump rests inside a strainer cage that pre-filters and protects from clogging, reducing maintenance. Easy to install and operate,
the pumps are completely submersible and have been engineered to run continuously.

PRESSURE-FLO FILTER
How It Works:
1. With the filter connected to the pump, water enters the unit through the water inlet.
2. It then passes through the mechanical filtration stage (consisting of foam filters that
intercept and trap dirt and debris).
3. Next, water enters a biological filtration chamber (except PT1500) where it comes
into contact with Biospheres bio media which harbour beneficial bacteria (that
keeps the water healthy).
4. Dirt-free water then passes along an integrated UV-C lamp, where it is exposed to
ultraviolet rays that inhibit the growth of single-celled algae organisms.
5. Filtered water finally returns to the pond and the cycle starts again.

Backwash Cleaning System
Pressure-Flo Filters feature a revolutionary Backwash-Cleaning System that
completely cleans the entire surface of the foam filters without having to remove the
filter lid. This patent-pending system is the only one of its kind. The backwash feature
ensures that the filter performs at optimal levels and prolongs the time between full
maintenance sessions. An easy-view cleaning indicator signals when it is time to
perform backwash cleaning.
How It Works:
A. External cleaning handles move up and down - no need to open filter lid.
B. Two internal cleaning blades scrub and remove debris from the filter foam.
C. Debris is expelled (into a bucket or garden). Filter foam is now clean.

The nitrogen cycle is the biological interaction between plants, fish, and beneficial bacteria. This is a natural process which develops in time in any water garden.
Equipment technology and water treatments can reduce the time factor and help to achieve a healthy chemical balance in your water garden.
The nitrogen cycle begins when fish eat food they find in the water and produce waste. The fish waste contains nitrogen in the form of ammonia (too much ammonia and
nitrogen in the water can be deadly to fish). Beneficial bacteria convert waste into nitrites (a form plants absorb). Plants take up the nutrients and help produce clear water.
Alquatic plants produce chlorophyll, which in turn is consumed by fish to continue the cycle again.
Generally the nitrogen cycle is encouraged with biological and mechanical filtration and with UV Sterilization/Clarification. However, problems can occur if you remove any
part of the cycle such as if the pond has too many fish or too little beneficial bacteria, or insufficient plants. Maintaining stable pH and water quality is important for all pond
inhabitants, specifically large population’s of beneficial bacteria.
Stabilizing Your Water Gardens Eco-system
Laguna’s Quick Test Strips for Ponds
(PT145) provide a fast and easy way
to measure your ponds toxic levels
of nitrites and nitrates as well as
pH alkalinity and hardness levels.
Should your pond have unbalanced
pH levels use Laguna water
treatments to take quick corrective
action and achieve a healthy
chemical balance.
The higher the pH of the water, the
more toxic ammonia will be. If you
have a high pH (above 7.5) and are
having trouble with fish, test for
ammonia.
Providing pond plants with
additional nutrients such as Pond
Spikes (PT910 & PT911) and Plant
Grow (PT866) helps maximize the
plants job in helping to convert
nitrites to nitrates and can lessen
the levels of ammonia in the water.
If you have a low pH (7 or below),
and are having trouble with fish,
test for nitrites. Nitrites are toxic
to fish and need to be removed or
changed. Without a supplement,
such as Bio Booster (PT891/
PT893), it can take approximately
ten days to break the nitrites down
naturally. It is especially important
to supplement with Bio Booster in
the spring or when adding fish as
nitrites increase at this time.
It can take up to 21 days for nitrites
to convert to nitrates. In small
quantities, Nitrates are non-toxic
to fish and are a fertilizer for plants.
To speed up the conversion process
we recommend adding Laguna Bio
Sludge Control (PT886/PT888) to
your pond.
Remember to test your pond often; especially in new ponds where ammonia and nitrogen levels are likely to vary until their eco-systems are stabilized.

Water Maintenance
Part of maintaining a pond usually means testing, treating, and cleaning the water from time
to time. Testing to see if the pond water is adequately balanced and to see if the filtration
system is doing its job is essential. When testing indicates problem areas, Laguna water

Choosing a liner or perform may be one of the most important decisions to make regarding
the construction of a pond. Whether the consumer is looking to transform their yard into
a backyard retreat, or simply install a small water feature, Laguna liners and pre-forms are

Winterizing
Pond owners in colder climate zones, who plan to over-winter fish in their pond, need to
ensure that an air hole is kept open, allowing the release of toxic gases from fish respiration
and decomposing organic matter to escape (which is essential for fish survival).
Laguna winterizing products will help keep an area in the pond thawed, releasing the toxic
gasses and allowing oxygen to re-enter the pond, helping keep treasured fish healthy until
spring.
