Planning for your Pond
Introduction to Planning
Water gardening is increasingly becoming a popular hobby that can add a unique dimension to your home. Even with limited space, you can design
a water feature that brings the beauty of nature into your backyard, along with sound and movement. Having a clear plan is the best way to insure
you will create the water garden of your dreams.
Two key planning factors are:
• Budget — by determining your budget, you simplify the majority of your pond decisions.
• Site Location — choosing the correct location helps to clarify the size and type of pond that is possible.
Budget
By using a balanced approach, you will not only create a beautiful pond that requires less maintenance, but save yourself time and money.
• What will the final size of pond be? Bigger ponds may require bigger pumps and filters, but generally requires less work and cost to maintain.
• What kind of pond/water feature is desired - container, pre-form, liner or waterfall?
• Will the pond incorporate fish or plants or both?
• What accessories will be included – lighting, spitters, fountains, etc?
A common mistake people make when building their pond, is cutting corners in the wrong areas, such as:
• Purchasing a pump with a lower “sticker price” may save you $100 initially, but cost an extra $50 or more per year in higher electricity
usage and repairs.
• Purchasing too small of a pump.
• Buying too small of a filter.
• Too small of a pond, that needs to be enlarged after several years.
Site Location
Key factors for choosing the correct location
for your pond
1. Choose a location that receives 4 to 6 hours of sunlight each day. Most
aquatic plants flourish in sunlight, but too much sunlight can cause the
pond to overheat and make maintenance more difficult.
2. Position the pond where it can be easily observed and heard from the
house.
3. Use natural slopes in your yard to create waterfalls and other landscape
features.
4. Choose an area close to an electrical source with GFI rated electrical
outlets and a water source. Small ponds can easily lose 1” (2.54 cm) per
day due to evaporation.
5. Check with your local municipality regarding pond depth, fencing
requirements and required safety measures.
6. Avoid digging in an area where there are power cords below ground.
7. Avoid overhanging trees as falling leaves will contaminate the water,
roots will hamper digging and potentially cause damage.
8. Avoid areas that always stay wet.
Planning for your Pond
Pond Sizes
• 1 to 5 gallon ponds. Offer a carefree way to enjoy small water plants close up.
• 20 to 40 gallon ponds. Let you get your feet wet by providing a serene area to enjoy small/medium pond plants. You can also have a small pump
and maybe even a goldfish or two.
• 50 to 500 gallon ponds. Are a great place to start, not too big of a commitment. However, once you discover your enthusiasm for pond keeping,
it won’t be long before you’re making plans to expand.
• 500 to 3000 gallon ponds. Will allow you to keep fish and a large variety of pond plants.
• 3000 gallon ponds and over. Many people find water gardening and fish keeping to be the hobby of their dreams and will invest the time and
money to get the maximum enjoyment out of their water garden.
Small Pond
up to 500 U.S. gal (1890 L)
Medium Pond
500 to 1500 U.S. gal (1890 L to 5670 L)
Large Pond
1500 to 3000 U.S. gal (5670 L to 11350 L)
Determine the size of your pond as follows:
(All measurements in feet).
For a Square or Rectangular Pond:
(Length x Width x Average Depth) x 7.5 = Total U.S. Gallons.
For a Round Pond:
0.785 x (Top Dia. x Bottom Dia. x Depth) x 7.5 = Total U.S. Gallons.
Extra-Large Pond
3000 U.S. gal or more (11350 L or more) To convert to litres, multiply U.S. gallons by 3.78
4
Installing your Pond
Liners
45 mil EPDM Flexible Liner (20 year guarantee)
Pros:
• Liner is flexible and allows more versatility in pond design, ideal
for custom installations.
• Long lasting, comes with 20 year manufacturer’s warranty.
• UV stabilized.
• Excellent performance in cold climates.
• Ideal for making natural looking streams and waterfalls.
• Safe for fish and plants.
EPDM Rubber Liner
Calculating Liner Size:
In feet:
Length = (Depth x 2)+ Length + 2’ (for overlap).
Width = (Depth x 2) + Width + 2’ (for overlap).
In meters:
Length = (Depth x 2) + Length + 0.6m (for overlap).
Width = (Depth x 2) + Width + 0.6m (for overlap).
Things to consider: Not all liners are intended for pond use and
may contain oils and fungicides that are harmful to fish and plants.
Pre-Formed
Laguna pre-formed ponds are available in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and depths. Many come with pre-contoured shelves and steps. Choose
a style that best suits your garden and selected location. Another point to consider when selecting your pre-formed pond is water depth. If you
wish to winter your fish in a harsh climate you will need to select a pond with a depth of at least 4 feet (1.2 m) therefore a liner may be more suitable.
5
Installing a pre-formed pond:
1. Place the pond in position and carefully mark out its shape with pegs (ill.1). DO NOT place the pre-formed pond upside down to outline the shape,
or your hole will not match the shape of the form. Position the pond right side up in the exact place you want it and use it as a guide or template
while digging around the stakes. Make your outline 4 - 6 inches (10 - 15 cm) larger than the pond itself.
2. Check the first level and start digging down to the shelves.
3. Reposition the pond, mark out the inner deeper section and continue digging out to the bottom. Be sure that the hole is slightly deeper than the
actual depth of the preformed pond and verify that the bottom is level. remove any stones or roots that may pierce the pre-formed pond when
the weight of the water is added.
4. Once you are satisfied that the hole is the proper size, depth and orientation, add about 2 inches (5.08 cm) of sand to the base level and shelves
(ill.4). This will protect the liner from damage due to exposed roots or rocks.
5. Insert the pre-formed pond and make a final check to make sure it is level (ill.5). Back-fill any spaces left from digging with sand.
6. Now you are ready to add water. The weight of the water as it is added will help the pre-formed pond settle into place.
Installing your Pond
Digging the Hole
Use a rope or garden hose to determine the shape of your pond, avoid sharp corners as they will impede optimum filtration.
Design a series of levels or shelves
• A small shelf should be made to be the same thickness as the stone being used for the surround or coping of the pond. This can often be achieved
by removing a layer of sod. This first shelf is used to hide the liner and allows for the water level to be above the first layer of rock: generally
4” (10 cm) deep and 8” to 10” (20 – 25 cm) wide.
• The next shelf is used for planting marginal and/or bog plants: generally 8”-12” (20 – 30 cm) deep, 8”-10” (20 – 25 cm) wide.
• A 12” (30 cm) steep step helps deter predators such as raccoons .
• Also create a step for pond access, remember the step does not need to be created around the entire pond.
• Deeper shelves can be made for the addition of plants such as hardy or tropical water lilies. Deeper shelves can also be used for over wintering
potted water perennials.
• Remember, always dig a gradual slope. We recommend 120 degrees. If the pond is not angled, you run the risk of having the pond collapse or
cave in.
• If you are considering fish we recommend a minimum depth of 36” (91 cm). For Koi we recommend a large pond with a minimum depth of 48” (122 cm).
6
Installing the Liner
• Use 1-2” (2.5-5 cm) of sand or geotextile underlay. This will help
protect the liner from sharp stones or tree roots.
• Drag the liner over the hole and gently push it into place. We
recommend if possible that you warm the liner before adding water.
You can do this by leaving the liner in the hot sun, either in place or
on a driveway. (Tip) Do not leave the liner on the grass to pre heat.
This may cause permanent damage to the grass.
• Place bricks along the outer edge of liner to prevent EPDM
from shifting.
• Be sure to leave a minimum of 2’ (0.6 m) of overlap around outer edge
of pond.
• Begin filling the liner with water .
• Liner will stretch and conform to shape of the hole.
• Fold and fit liner into place as it fills with water.
• Once the pond is full, place flat stones over the edge of liner.
• Trim and tuck the excess liner.
Filtration
All ponds will benefit from the addition of a filtration system. A good filtration system ensures that the water quality of the pond will remain clear of
impurities which can accumulate, creating a cloudy or toxic environment for pond plants and fish.
Filters perform three filtration functions: mechanical, biological and chemical.
Mechanical filtration refers to the process of removing debris and dissolved organic waste from the pond water. As dirty water flows through the
filter foam or other mechanical media, dirt and debris is trapped.
Biological filtration refers to the process of providing an area where beneficial bacteria can grow and multiply. This is an important factor in the
breakdown of harmful toxins such as ammonia. Once biological toxins are broken down, chemical filter media and pond plants can help control
the resulting compounds.
Chemical filtration refers to the process of controlling and changing specific water conditions. This does not mean that the media is a chemical.
Natural products can be considered chemical media.
Laguna Pressure-Flo Filters (PT1500/02/04/06)
EPA Registered. EPA Est. No. 74504-ITA-001
A high performance water filtering system that keeps pond water clean and healthy.
• These high performance filters provide important water filtration functions that are essential for
everyday pond maintenance: mechanical and biological* filtration, as well as UVC sterilization.
(*except model 700).
• Pressure-Flo filters are designed to work in tandem with a solids handling pump such as Laguna’s
Max-Flo circulating pumps. With the filter connected to the pump, water enters the unit through
a water inlet. It then passes through the mechanical filtration stage, consisting of foam filters that
intercept and trap dirt and debris.
• Next, water enters a biological filtration chamber where it comes into contact with Biospheres
biomedia which harbour beneficial bacteria that keeps the water healthy.
• Dirt-free water then passes along an integrated UV-C lamp, where it is exposed to ultraviolet rays that
inhibit the growth of single-celled algae organisms. Water finally returns to the pond thoroughly
cleansed.
• Each Pressure-Flo filter features a revolutionary Backwash-Cleaning System that completely cleans
the entire surface of the foam filters. This patent-pending system is the only one of its kind. Backwash
cleaning can easily and comfortably be done in a few minutes without opening the lid. This feature
ensures that the filter performs at optimal levels for many days and prolongs the time between full
maintenance sessions. An easy-view cleaning indicator signals when it’s time to perform backwash
cleaning.
• The unit can be installed in or above ground.
UV Sterilizers, Tubing, Connectors and Clamps
Algae can be a major problem with some ponds. One way to help control algae growth is with the installation of a UV sterilizer.
A UV sterilizer uses powerful ultraviolet light to destroy algae cells (green water), reduce free flowing harmful bacteria and
viruses, as well as help control certain parasites. UV light (radiation) is absorbed by algae cells and disrupts their DNA,
preventing them from reproducing and eventually causes the cells to die. The same UV radiation helps to control parasites,
bacteria and viruses which in-turn reduces the chances of fish disease.
Advantages of UV Sterilizers
• UV treatment does not adversely change the water chemistry of the pond.
• Easy to install
• Treatment takes place outside of the pond, away from fish and plants.
• Laguna’s line of UV sterilizers/clarifiers provides an
environmentally friendly approach to controlling green
water by eliminating the need for harsh chemicals.
Laguna UV Sterilizers (PT1671/75/80)
EPA Registered. EPA Est. No. 079790-CHN-001
• Quartz-sleeve protects the lamp from damage and
maintains optimal bulb temperature.
• Spiral shaped contact chamber provides maximum
water exposure to UV light.
• Eliminates green water guaranteed.
• Creates beneficial pond water conditions for fish and plants.
• LED Indicator – Safely shows the UV lamp is working.
• Easy UV-C lamp replacement.
20
PowerClear UV’s (PT520 8W & PT522 16W)
EPA Registered. EPA Est. No. 079790-CHN-001
• Compact design ideal for small ponds from 1000 – 1800 gals.
• Made in Italy – Quality construction.
Hosing, Connectors, and Clamps
Hoses, connectors and clamps are the “nuts and bolts” of any pond system. Laguna can provide
pond owners with everything they need to create a long lasting and beautiful water garden. Thanks
to our Click Fit connectors, all components snap together for easy assembly and maintenance.
Non-Kink Tubing
• The tubing is thick yet flexible and will not kink, ensuring minimum
water resistance and maximum water flow, even in the sharpest turns.
• Reinforced ribbing prevents collapse when used on suction lines due to
reasonable weight from gravel and cover material when buried.
• Black opaque hose prevents the formation of algae on the inner walls
of the hose.
• Made from 100% fish safe P.V.C.
Stainless Steel Hose Clamps
• Enables tight and secure hose connections.
• Stainless steel clamps will not rust as they are specifically suited for
applications in and near water.
• Clamps have a smooth inner surface that will not damage the hosing.
• Provides maximum torque and sealing efficiency.
Fish
Fish add color, movement and grace to any water garden. The size of the pond and how much oxygen there is in the water will
help determine the number of fish it can accommodate. It’s worthwhile to have a little less fish than a little too many and to keep
in mind that in the summer fish are more active and the warmer water contains less oxygen (which can influence unsightly water
conditions) so it’s important to resist any temptation to overstock.
Fish will often reproduce and grow quickly in a pond environment. A general rule of thumb is to allow 1 inch (2 cm) of fish for
every 13 US gallons (50 liters) of water. Note: Koi are specialized fish and need more space in a pond than goldfish.
Tips for selecting healthy fish:
• Clear Eyes (not cloudy).
• Undamaged fins.
• Scales should be intact, parallel with body (not sticking outwards) and no red blotches.
• No holes, ulcerations, or lumps.
• Active, lively, normal swimming patterns.
• No white spots (salt grain size) or white cottony growths on the fins or body.
• Respiration rate should be regular and steady (in unstressed circumstances).
• Gills should be red inside, not faded or discolored, and not distended or puffy.
• Actively feeding.
• Avoid selecting fish from a system that contains any sick specimens.
Choosing fish that are healthy from the beginning will help avoid problems.
l
Goldfish vs. Koi
• Goldfish can be kept in smaller ponds than Koi. They have been cultured for centuries and a variety of different species are available. Among the
characteristics that determine the different varieties are tail length, color, and the absence of a dorsal fin. Goldfish can grow to 12 inches (30 cm)
in length. Common varieties include: Sarasa, Comets, Red Fantails and Shubunkins.
• Koi (carp) are the most well recognized pond fish. They come in a variety of different color patterns. Some koi have been reported to live up to 75
years and reach over 3 feet (0.9 meters) in length.
Nutrition
• It is important to feed pond fish a high quality diet to supplement the natural foods that are found in the pond (such as insects and plant matter).
This ensures that the fish are receiving a correctly-balanced diet.
• Laguna fish foods and treats are ideal for all types of pond fish and are formulated for the seasonal variances in pond temperatures.
21
Adding Fish to the Pond
• Treat pond fish with great care. Any handling or transportation, even introducing them to the pond will cause stress.
• Introduce fish to the pond slowly, matching the water temperature by floating the bag in the pond before release. Keep in a shaded area as the
sun can quickly raise the temperature in the bag.
• Add a small amount pond water to the bag to help them get used to any differences there may be in the quality of water.
• After approximately 20 minutes of this gradual introduction process you may release the fish into their new home. Any handling of the fish
should be minimal and only a soft net should be used.
Tips for disease prevention:
• Choose only healthy fish.
• Purchase fish in limited groups, slowly build fish populations.
• Follow proper acclimation of new specimens.
• Always condition new water properly. Chlorine, chloramine, and
metals are damaging to inhabitants. Use Laguna Water Prep.
• Perform basic water tests and maintenance on a regular basis.
Tips for disease prevention:
• If a medication has been used, after the treatment is complete,
perform additional water changes and use carbon to remove
residual traces.
• Supply regular feedings with a high quality diet such as
Laguna Goldfish and Koi foods.
Pond Food Design
Active fish in warm water require greater amounts of food than sedentary fish in cooler water. Select a
protein-rich fish food for warm weather feeding, as your pond fish will benefit from the added nutrition. As the
temperature outdoors grows colder, your goldfish and koi’s metabolisms drop and their ability to digest protein
decreases. Once the temperature of your pond water drops below 50°F (10°C), switch both goldfish and koi
to a low-protein, high-carbohydrate fish food. Wheat germ is easily digestible even for fish with decreased
metabolic rates – making it a safe cold weather diet.
A fish fattens up in the fall, like a bear before going into hibernation. As the water temperature begins to drop, the fishes metabolism slows and
they will consume less food.
In the Fall
• Switch food source to Laguna Wheat Germ when water temperature reaches 50°F (10°C) .
• Digestion slows as the water temperature decreases - Hi protein foods can stay in the digestive tract and decay causing harm to the fish.
• When water temperature falls below 47°F (8°C), discontinue feeding completely.
In the Spring
• The fish will be lean and hungry, their metabolic rate will slowly increase with the water temperature.
• When a constant water temperature of 47°F (8°C) is achieved, start feeding with Laguna Wheat Germ Food. As the temperature rises above
50 °F - 54 °F (10 -12 °C), All season, or Color Enhancing Sticks are recommended.
Water Treatments and Maintenance
The Nitrogen Cycle explained
The Nitrogen Cycle refers to the conversion of toxic compounds - ammonia, nitrite and nitrate that are produced in all aquatic environments.
Although this looks a little intimidating, understanding the process will give better insight into how your water garden functions biologically. When
looking at the Nitrogen Cycle, we can break it down into four phases.
FISH EAT
plants
eat
FISH
WASTE
Pond Spikes and Plant Grow to
maximize nitrogen cycle
Nitrates
AMMONIA
Bio Sludge Control to help
beneficial bacteria convert nitrites
NITRITES
Bio Booster to help beneficial
bacteria remove ammonia
23
PHASE ONE: The cycle begins when fish eat and then excrete ammonia. Decaying plant material also adds to higher ammonia levels in the pond.
Ammonia is toxic to fish and must therefore be removed from the pond. The higher the pH of the water, the more toxic Ammonia will be. If you have
a high pH above 7.5 and are having trouble with fish, test for ammonia.
PHASE TWO: A species of nitrifying bacteria called nitrosomonas converts ammonia into nitrite. Nitrite is also toxic to fish and needs
to be removed or changed. This takes approximately ten days, if the pond is not supplemented with Laguna Bio Booster. The bacterium that
breaks down Nitrite is much slower to reproduce naturally than the bacteria that controls Ammonia. This is why is it important to supplement
with Bio Booster especially in the Spring or when adding fish. If you have a low pH, 7 or below and are having trouble with fish, test
for nitrite.
PHASE THREE: A second group of nitrifying bacteria called nitrobacter converts nitrite into nitrate. Nitrate is non-toxic to fish in small quantities and
is used by plants as fertilizer. This conversion period takes up to twenty-one days, after which the nitrite should be almost gone. We recommend
using Laguna Bio Booster to speed up the process.
PHASE FOUR: Algae and aquatic plants use nitrate to produce chlorophyll, which in turn is consumed by fish. The cycle then repeats itself.
It is important to understand that water chemistry, temperature, pollutants and other factors can affect the performance of nitrifying beneficial
bacteria. Maintaining stable pH and water quality is important for all pond inhabitants, specifically large population’s of beneficial bacteria.
www.lagunaponds.com
Water Treatments and Maintenance
CAUSE
• Excess nutrients (nitrate & phosphate) from decomposed fish waste, uneaten fish food
or accumulated sludge on the bottom of the pond.
• Lack of aquatic plants on pond surface for shade and nutrient absorption.
• Excessive levels of carbon dioxide caused by excess nutrients, high water temperatures
as we move into summer month’s can cause incorrect pH level.
SOLUTIONS TO PREVENT ALGAE BLOOMS (GREEN WATER)
• Introduction of beneficial bacteria that compete with algae for food.
• Introduction of plants that compete for the same food source and provide shade:
Lilies, Oxygenators and Floaters should cover a minimum 60% pond surface coverage.
• UV Sterilizer creates beneficial pond water conditions for fish and plants.
Unique spiral-shaped contact chamber provides extended
UV exposure to water and increases efficiency by 50%.
SOLUTIONS WHEN ALGAE BLOOMS OR
GREEN WATER ARE ESTABLISHED
Use of coagulants and flocculants:
Laguna Algae Remover/Pond Clean Granules
• Immediate algae control
• Works on contact
• Powder format
Plants
Aquatic plants play a very important role in any water garden. They create a natural look while providing shade and shelter for a wide variety of
creatures including frogs, fish and dragon flies. With proper care, aquatic plants will not only enhance the beauty of the pond, they will also reduce
maintenance and create crystal clear water conditions.
Tip: Ideally 60-70% of the pond’s surface should be covered with plants.
Benefits of aquatic plants:
• Supplemental filtration - plants absorb ammonium, nitrates and phosphates. Plants also assimilate other undesirable substances, such as
metals, from pond water helping to improve water quality.
• Supply food and shelter for fish.
• Compete with algae through the intake of essential nutrients, while shading the pond from light.
• Helps keep a biological balance.
• Helps prevent water from overheating.
Tips for selecting healthy plants:
• Ensure that you are actually purchasing aquatic plants. Some plants sold are not truly aquatics and will not do well in a pond environment.
Consult knowledgeable garden center staff and books.
• Look for healthy specimens. Avoid plants that are damaged (holes, broken leaves and/or stems) or exhibit yellow or brown leaves. rooted plants
should have clean-looking (usually white) healthy root masses (note: exception = bunch plants).
• Look for proper, clean plant holding facilities. Aquatic plant tubs should be clean, warm and well lit.
Make sure plants stay wet or damp during the journey home; do not allow any part of the plant to become completely dry. Plants can be wrapped
in damp newspaper and placed in a plastic bag or Styrofoam cooler to keep damp and cool for the trip home.
28
Types of Water Plants
Marginal or Bog:
Grows in soil, from slightly above the water surface to covered by several centimeters of water. They eventually emerge out of the water along the
pond edge or near water and provide natural filtration. i.e. Arrowhead, Canna Lilly, Cattails, Rushes, Papyrus, etc.
Deep-Water:
Rooted in soil and then placed in water deeper than 11.8” (30 cm). The leaves and flowers grow on or above the water surface. i.e. Lillies.
Floating:
Not rooted in soil, the plant remains on top of the water. Floating plants, including lily pads, should cover a large percentage of the pond water
surface. This will inhibit algae development and provide shade.
Note: depending on the type of floaters you have it is important to wait until the risk of frost is over before introducing them to the pond. i.e. Duck
weed, Hyacinths, Water Lettuce.
Submerged (also known as Aerators/Oxygenators):
May or may not be rooted at the bottom of the pond. They grow entirely under the water. Use fish waste and decaying organics as fertilizer and
provide oxygen to the water. Help maintain a natural balance by competing with algae for nutrients, helping reduce unsightly algae growth. i.e.
Hornwort, Parrot’s Feather, etc.
Spring Opening
Step 1 – Cleaning
The most important task in preparing a pond for the new season is to eliminate any leftover organic residue. Use a pond net or skimmer net to
remove leaves, twigs and debris from inside the pond. The Laguna Cordless Pond Cleaner provides a fast and convenient way to clean the pond.
Step 2 – Refilling
Early spring is a good time to consider a partial water change of up to 50%. Use a pump to partially drain the pond. Before refilling, let the water run
a few minutes to flush the pipes. Make new water safe by adding Laguna Water Prep to eliminate chlorine and chloramine, as well as to neutralize
any harmful metals found in tap or well water.
Step 3 – Starting the Pond
The best time to start the pond’s biological system is right at the beginning of the season when pond temperature is above 50 °F (10 °C).
Laguna Bio Booster provides powerful beneficial bacteria designed to eliminate ammonia and nitrite as it is produced. Laguna
Phosphate Control is a second bacterial preparation that, like Laguna Bio Booster, is beneficial to add to the pond’s ecosystem. It contains
micro-organisms that help reduce phosphate levels in pond water naturally reducing algae without employing algaecides.
Step 4 – Starting the Equipment
Pond equipment should have been cleaned and packed away for winter. If not, then make sure to clean all dirt and debris before restarting or
placing in position. If pumps were allowed to run over the winter, they should be removed and cleaned.
Step 5 – Adding the Fish
Fish that have been kept indoors for the winter will need time to adjust to the pond’s water conditions. A sudden change in temperature and pH level
can have an adverse effect on the fish. That is why it is important to allow them to acclimatize gradually. Never “pour” or drop the fish into the pond.
If the fish have over wintered in the pond, do not start feeding them until they are active and/or the pond temperature has reached approximately
47 °F (8 °C). Watch your fish carefully for a few days. Moving can have a traumatic effect on fish, so watch them carefully to ensure that they are
adjusting to their new surroundings and that there are no losses.
Winterization
31
Pond owners in colder climate zones, who plan to over-winter fish in their pond, need to ensure
that an air hole is kept open to allow for proper gas exchange.
Laguna offers a wide variety of winterizing products to help keep your treasured fish healthy
until the spring.
Aeration Kit PT1630
• Helps increase dissolved oxygen levels. Important when medicating or in ponds
that have a large fish density. Aids in proper oxygen / gas exchange will help fish to
survive during winter months. Comes complete with:
• Powerful air pump
• 30’ (9 m) winter safe airline tubing
• Air diffuser (Air Stone)
• High density float for adjustable airline depth
Pond De-Icer / Heaters – PT1642 and PT1643
• Keeps an area thawed and open in the pond allowing the release of toxic gases from fish
respiration and decomposing organic matter to escape. At the same time it allows oxygen to
re-enter the pond.
Pond De-Icer / Aerator PT1645
• The Floating Styrofoam disc attaches to Laguna pump outlet allowing for winter water circulation
and oxygenation. Prevents ice from forming around disc to allow oxygen/gas exchange. This
item is recommended for zones 6a to 7b.
PT1649 Complete Fall Closing Kit and PT1648 Complete Winterizing Kit
• Suitable for garden zones 1 to 8 (20 ˚F/ -6 ˚C) and below.
• Includes all the necessary equipment for winterizing your water garden.
Lighting
There are a few different approaches to underwater lighting. The main
idea is to illuminate the water in the pond by shining underwater lights
on the walls or on focal points like plants or fountains.
Installing Electrical Systems
Always install a GFCI - Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter or circuit
breaker.
• Run the wiring through a conduit or pipe to protect it from being
severed by an overzealous gardener.
• Install an outside box with at least two plugs - a four outlet box will
allow for other accessories to be added.
• A cover with a lock is usually a good idea to protect it from the
elements and children.
• Don’t hard wire pump, lights or UV in place – Voids warranty.
PowerGlo LED Ornament Accent Light
With the new PowerGlo LED Ornament Accent Light consumers can
add the finishing touch to their ornamental fountains. Installation is
quick and simple - the light fits into a pre-drilled opening on the line
of Laguna ornamental fountains. Includes low voltage transformer 12V
• Low operating costs.
