<strong>Monitoring</strong> relays, timer relays, function blocks<br />
The requirements pertaining to safety and<br />
system availability are constantly increasing<br />
– regardless of the industry. Processes are<br />
becoming more and more complex, not<br />
only in mechanical engineering and the<br />
chemical industry but also in plant and<br />
auto<strong>mation</strong> technology. The requirements<br />
for power engineering are also constantly<br />
on the rise.<br />
A trouble-free and thus cost-effective<br />
operation can be achieved only with<br />
continuous monitoring of significant<br />
network and system parameters. Electronic<br />
monitoring relays of the EMD series are<br />
available for a wide variety of monitoring<br />
tasks to avoid the consequences of errors<br />
or to keep them within limits.<br />
The operating states are signaled using<br />
coloLED reds, and errors that may occur<br />
can be sent to a controller through a<br />
floating contact or can switch off a section<br />
of the system. Some device versions are<br />
equipped with startup and response delays<br />
in order to briefly tolerate measured values<br />
outside the set monitoring range.<br />
The compact timer relays in the narrow<br />
6.2 mm housing or multi-functional timer<br />
relays can be used in order to control time<br />
sequences in production and process<br />
technology.<br />

the three phases L1, L2, and L3 are available.<br />
The voltage indicating modules IEG-45-<br />
3LA/.../21 are used for monitoring, for<br />
example on a tariff changing board. These<br />
modules indicate all three phases with highaccuracy<br />
reading even in case of reverse<br />
voltages.<br />
These modules also have a floating PDT<br />

Temperature monitoring<br />
(motor winding)<br />
The monitoring relay EMD-SL-PTC<br />
monitors the motor winding temperatures<br />
by means of PTC (PTC thermistor<br />
resistance) as per DIN 44081.<br />
If the PTC total resistance is less than<br />
3.6 kΩ (normal temperature of the motor)<br />
when the supply voltage is applied, the<br />
output relay picks up. If the total resistance<br />
rises above 3.6 kΩ (at least one of the PTCs<br />
has reached the nominal switch-off<br />
temperature), the output relay drops out.<br />
The output relay picks up again when the<br />
total resistance has dropped below 1.8 kΩ<br />
again after the PTC has cooled down, and<br />
either an internal or external reset button<br />
has been pressed or the power supply<br />
interrupted.<br />

The four variants of the multifunctional<br />
timer relays ETD completely cover the<br />
range of classic applications.<br />
Each of these devices is a practical<br />
combination of functionality with extremely<br />
simple operation. The adjustable time<br />
ranges have been kept as wide as possible to<br />
allow them to be used in universal<br />
applications. The timer relay applications<br />
are therefore to be found not only in the ms<br />
range, but also in the range of days.<br />
The desired function can be set using the<br />
rotary switch.<br />

Diode modules<br />
Diode circuits fulfill the most varied<br />
requirements in electrical and, above all,<br />
electronic control systems, for example:<br />
– The electrical decoupling of messages in<br />
fault warning systems or<br />
– As spark arrester diodes for damping<br />
surge voltages of inductive consumers,<br />
e.g. solenoid valves, direct voltage relays<br />
etc.<br />
Due to these requirements, diode<br />
modules are available as "diode gates" with<br />
common anode or cathode or as diodes for<br />
free assignment.<br />

Motor attenuation modules<br />
(RC modules)<br />
Inductivities of motors or contactor coils<br />
can superimpose DC and AC circuits with<br />
dangerous voltages. RC elements have<br />
proven to be suitable for attenuation.<br />
The compact motor attenuation modules<br />
for star-connected circuits can be installed<br />
in the terminal boxes on-site, i.e. far away<br />
from electrical control systems.<br />
Suitable RC elements for ranges from 4 to<br />
7.5 kW are selected according to:<br />
