<strong>Scottish</strong> <strong>school</strong> <strong>magazine</strong> <strong>competition</strong><br />

<strong>2008</strong> <strong>Shortlist</strong> <strong>announced</strong><br />

Pupils from secondary <strong>school</strong>s all over Scotland will gather at The <strong>Scottish</strong> Parliament in Edinburgh on<br />

Friday 6 June to learn if they have won the <strong>Scottish</strong> School Magazine of the Year <strong>competition</strong> for <strong>2008</strong>.<br />

Burgeoning young talent will be recognised and rewarded at a special afternoon ceremony which will<br />

take place in the inspirational surroundings of the <strong>Scottish</strong> Parliament in Edinburgh. Deputy Presiding<br />

Officer Trish Godman MSP will welcome around 200 pupils and guests and Maureen Watt MSP, Minister<br />

for School & Skills will be handing out the prizes. The award ceremony will be hosted by BBC Scotland’s<br />

Cathy MacDonald.<br />

From the sixty <strong>school</strong>s which registered to enter the <strong>competition</strong>, nineteen <strong>school</strong>s went forward to the final<br />

judging day. The distinguished panel of ten judges, chaired by journalist and publisher Ray Perman, a<br />

member of the Board at <strong>Scottish</strong> Enterprise, came together in Edinburgh to assess the entries. Their task<br />

was made tough and exacting by the array of unique publications put before them. They were impressed not<br />

only by the enthusiasm, competence and boldness displayed within the pages of each submission, but also by<br />

the many excellent ideas coming through from young editors, writers, designers and publishers of the future.<br />

After careful consideration and deliberation, the judges’ shortlist selection, in alphabetical order by <strong>school</strong>,<br />

for the nine award categories is as follows:<br />

Through this <strong>competition</strong>, The Periodical Publishers Association in Scotland (PPA Scotland) aims to raise<br />

awareness and understanding of the skills required by and expectations of the <strong>magazine</strong> industry and to<br />

encourage <strong>school</strong>-leavers to consider the <strong>magazine</strong> industry as a career choice. The <strong>competition</strong> is run in<br />

partnership with and sponsored by Determined to Succeed, the <strong>Scottish</strong> Government’s strategy for enterprise<br />

in education. This country’s future depends on young people with positive attitudes and good core skills, who<br />

understand about business and entrepreneurship and who are eager to benefit from lifelong learning which<br />

starts in the classroom.<br />

<strong>Scottish</strong> <strong>magazine</strong> publishers and industry suppliers are lending their support for this <strong>competition</strong> and will<br />

provide work experience, mentoring or production/printing tours for winning <strong>school</strong>s. Every shortlisted <strong>school</strong><br />

will receive a special certificate to acknowledge its achievement and representatives from the <strong>school</strong> which<br />

wins <strong>Scottish</strong> School Magazine of the Year <strong>2008</strong> will be invited to attend the <strong>Scottish</strong> Magazine Awards<br />

which will be held in November, as guests of PPA Scotland. The overall winning team will also have the<br />

opportunity to watch their <strong>magazine</strong> being professionally printed in York, as guests of Acorn Web Offset.<br />
