The Brazilian food processors, Sadia and Perdigao, exemplify the international<br />

entrepreneurship of the new global challengers. These firms operate farms and market<br />

chilled and frozen foods, cereals, and ready-to-eat meals. Each firm is a $2 billion<br />

enterprise and exports about half of its annual production. Abundant production<br />

resources for pork, poultry, and grains in Brazil and ideal growing conditions for<br />

animal feed provide advantages for these firms. Both Sadia and Perdigao also take<br />

pride in their world-class global distribution and supply-chain management systems.<br />

The new global challengers, including Sadia and Perdigao, apply business<br />

strategies, such as using home-country natural resources, low-cost sources of labor,<br />

engineering and managerial talent that sometimes exceed those of their counterparts<br />

in highly industrialized countries. Many of the firms are growing internationally<br />

by taking their established brands to global markets. For example, China’s<br />

Hisense sells millions of its branded television sets and air conditioners in over 40<br />

countries. It is the best-selling brand of flat-panel TV in France. Hisense also makes<br />

stylish consumer electronics at low prices.<br />
