1. Another New Year! How quickly we pass from one to the next. On behalf
of all of us at Prestige Philately, I would like to extend to you our warmest
wishes for a 2012 full of wonderful opportunities, philatelic achievement, and
good health.
2. You will see some significant changes in our operations in the
coming year. For starters, we expect to conduct most (perhaps all) of
our sales on a Friday. General auctions will be scheduled each
February, May, August and November. We will be revamping our website
and updating those pages that have been neglected in recent times. More
changes are in the planning stages: watch this space!
3. Our programme for the first half of 2012 is already in place. In late March,
we will be conducting an auction devoted to all things New Zealand: see
page 7 to order your free copy of the catalogue now. Early May will see our
next general auction, for which we are now accepting appropriate
consignments, and in late June we will proudly present the very extensive
collection of Victoria formed by Les Molnar of Canada.
4. The current auction is another wide-ranging sale. For those wanting
“bang for buck”, there are numerous well-developed collection lots both in
the miscellaneous section, and under specific country headings. At the
other end of the spectrum, there are significant rarities and a couple of new
discoveries, some at quite modest estimates. We also have interesting
selections of ephemera and postcards.
The Australian postal history section is the strongest we have offered since
our very successful sale of Kevin Nelson’s collection in November 2010.
The highlight is the collection of Kangaroo frankings formed by Matt
Hancock, with many attractive and unusual items including State/Roo
combination covers. And Kiwi Barry Scott has consigned his highly
decorated exhibit of the elusive and underrated ‘Military Envelopes’ from
World War I.
An extensive Australian Colonies/States section includes many very fine
Classics, a nice selection of New South Wales revenues, handy ranges of
Postal Stationery, and a small but select group of South Australian
Departmentals. We are also offering a collection of Victorian Barred
Numerals, and the earliest recorded postal marking of Western Australia: Ex
Mogens Juhl.
Turning to the Rest of the World, we have an unusually large number of
European and other foreign collection lots that will reward close inspection.
Other worthwhile sections are Southern & East Africa and Great Britain. We
also have a selection of Malayan lots from the fabled “Midas” Collection, and
New Republic varieties Ex Ferrary. The standout Pacific item is our front
cover piece, the magnificent Small Canoes die proof in red.
Finally, there is a range of literature including many highly regarded and
elusive titles.
5. It’s an exciting time to be involved in philately. The local and international
auction markets remain vibrant. We are greatly encouraged by the number
of new buyers entering the fray. Whether you are a collector, investor, or
dealer, I hope you derive as much enjoyment as we do from this most
stimulating of pastimes .
Finally, I again wish you a prosperous 2012, and success with your bidding
in this auction.
