You (Polite, singular and plural)
• There is no difference between the subject and the object, but the dative does
change.
Subject:
Was machen Sie? What are you doing?
Object:
Er möchte Sie treffen. He’d like to meet you.
Dative:
Er möchte mit Ihnen fahren. He’d like to travel with you.
• Remember: Sie and Ihnen begin with a capital letter at all times. These are the
words for ‘you’ and ‘your’ when you are talking to an adult or in a formal situation, for
example in a hotel, shop or bank.
You (Plural, familiar)
• The plural form of du is not Sie, but ihr. You need to be able to recognise this form.
Subject:
Was macht ihr? What are you doing?
Object:
Er möchte euch treffen. He’d like to meet you.
Dative:
Er möchte mit euch fahren. He’d like to travel with you.
They/them
• The same pattern is repeated as for Sie and Ihnen, but without a capital letter,
unless they are the first word in a sentence.
Subject:
Was machen sie? What are they doing?
Object:
Er möchte sie treffen. He’d like to meet them.
Dative:
Er möchte mit ihnen fahren. He’d like to travel with them.
• There are certain key phrases you will need to use and understand which contain
these pronouns:
Können Sie mir helfen? Can you help me?
Es gefällt mir. I like it. (Literally: It pleases me.)
Es tut mir Leid. I’m sorry. (Literally: It pains me.)
Mir ist heiß/kalt. I’m hot/cold. (Literally: to me it’s hot/cold.)
Mir ist schlecht. I feel ill.
Das ist mir zu klein. That’s too small for me.
