JeffCo 2012 “Happy 75th!” Fair - Alumni Booth
Bob Higdon, Class of ‘56
Because we’ve
accumulated such a large collection of photos, we rented two booths again this year at the Jefferson County
Fair in August. Kris Harper Logue, (Class of ’73) donated a beautiful gift basket she had put together so we
Tim Reandeau, Class of ‘78 were able to sell tickets for two raffle prizes. A total of $876 in raffle sales went to our Scholarship Fund!
Tim Reandeau (Class of ’78) won the basket donated by Kris, and Bob Higdon, (Class of ’56) won the basket with donated prizes. Special
thanks to the following who helped make that particular prize one of the best at the fair: Alumni Board & Officers, Bob Marriott & the Bow Ties,
Don’s Pharmacy, Expressions, Hill Top Tavern, Hwy 20 Roadhouse, Jacqueline’s Hairstyling, Joyce Blankenship, PennySaver, PT Golf Club,
Safeway, Tom Camfield, and Wiley Theaters.
Thanks to the Fair Booth volunteers: Joan Buhler, Jane Schwenke, Ruth Kvinsland, Linda Pedersen, Sharon Sofie, Pat Bondurant, Marian
REDSKINS: Is it time for a change?
Due to a letter to the superintendent in June from the parent of a sophomore at PTHS urging for a name change, the topic has
become a hot potato.
A committee has now been formed to study various aspects of this issue and
take testimonies in monthly meetings. Committee members are Chris Jones
Crubaugh, a PTHS alumnus, retired teacher and principal; Vic Dirksen, a former
hospital administrator; Gideon Cauffman, a Sequim graduate and the cultural
resources specialist for the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe; Yvonne Starkey, who
works for Port Townsend Paper; Walter McQuillen, oldest son of Mary
McQuillen, brother of Terri McQuillen and a hereditary Makah chief; David
Backman, a Port Townsend alumnus and current Redskin Booster Club
member; and Frank Garred, a former editor and publisher of the Leader.
The committee will give a summary of their findings to the board in June. The
board will make the final decision.
It is not known exactly when the name "Redskins" started being used. Up
through the 1926 yearbook, the teams were referred to as just "Townsend". The
yearbooks in the school library skip from 1926 to 1944. In the 1944 yearbook,
"Redskins" was appearing in print.
Redskin head is from the 1949 WaWa

Alumni Wall
The Alumni Wall on the third floor of the main building at
PTHS is now updated. The digital age became a curse when
students no longer turned in a real photo because they were
being submitted digitally for the yearbook. The school had no
way to
print out a
quality
photo and
there was
not a place
around
that was
affordable
for printing
out wallet
sized photos.
Jim Guthrie, Carpentry teacher, replacing the glass in the framing after setting the class
of 2012 into place.
1983 Main hall on the 2nd floor. The photos were moved up to the 3rd
floor in the next remodel.
For her senior project, Chunpeng Stankus, PTHS Class of 2011, asked
to complete the missing composites and bring the alumni wall up to date.
Principal's Secretary, Jan Boutilier, printed out each year's graduates'
names on stickers and found that Costco had bargain pricing on prints so
organized and sent in the digital images to have prints made. Chunpeng
artistically designed each composite, from 2003 through to 2012. Jim
Guthrie, PTHS Carpentry teacher, made the framing and mounted the
composites this fall. There is room for hanging class composites through
the class of 2024.

1926 PTHS Girls Basketball Champs
The 1926 season ended with five out of six games in favor of Townsend.
Much praise must be given to Miss Hodges, coach, and to the whole squad
for their faithful work.
Due to the fact that Clallam county girls could not play out of their county, it
was hard to schedule games, but Townsend won the championship of
Jefferson County.
The best match games of the season were those with Quilcene. Both teams
put all their reserve into these games and not until the final whistle blew was
anyone certain who was to be the victor. The one defeat of the season was
at Coupeville. This was the first defeat in many years from the Island school.
PTHS Forensic Membership
This is truly the year of the speaker, and Port Townsend students proved it. After a warm-up at Pacific Lutheran University, the individual
events speakers headed for state qualifications at
the Olympic College District Tournament in March.
Once at Olympic, Port Townsend was destined to
send five students in seven events to state competition
at Ellensburg in April. Those state bound all
found themselves against tough competition in the
final rounds. Headed for Ellensburg were Kathy
Myhre and Jeanne Gibson in oral interpretation
and Larry Cole in impromptu. Multiple events
speakers were Jodie Germeau, for both oratory
and expository, and Roger Kenyon in impromptu
and extemporaneous speaking.
