The condition in which I found my 40 year
old wife on tire morning of August I l, 1945.
She was badly burnecl and had developed running
sores.
I was a soldier and l-rad left for Takamatsu
in Shikoku by orders of the Army on August 5.
So I retulned home to Ushita in Hiroshima
City.
1. She iooked just like a ghost because her
eyelids were badly burncd and swollen.
2. FIer lips, swollen and protruding, made
her mouth look liLe a monkey's.
j. Aithough she wes under mosquito nerting,
the skin of her whole burned body
on which maggots were breeding had
the appearance of the crust of a crab.
Slre died on Scptember B. 1945. even
though I applied oil, seaweed, and tried every
othcr means I could think of to save her life.
