Single-use packaging at German super market
chain Kaiser’s Tengelmann is increasingly
being replaced by reusable packaging.
Consumers play a major role in this develop-
ment as they consider sustainable packaging
and a responsible production process as being
of mounting importance. For the coming
years, the supermarket chain aims to continue
positioning itself as a reliable and socially
responsible organisation.
Thomas Kühnle, procurement officer for fruit and
vegetables at Kaiser’s adds: “We see the consumer
setting ever higher demands on the products he buys.
Besides price and quality, for example, the range of
organic and regional products is gaining importance.
But increasingly, the consumer also wants to know a
product’s origin. For this reason, we have introduced
the ’Mein Gärtner’ brand. We want to show who
produce our fruit and vegetables and where our
products come from. By using reusable crates of Euro
Pool System, the sustainability of our products is
further emphasised. This increases customer loyalty.
We will also be applying this personal approach to our
internal operations. We want our employees to trust
our company. Be proud of it. And commit themselves
100% to personally be of service to our customers.
The Kaiser’s Tengelmann supermarkets are noted for
their friendly neighbourhood supermarkets. We wish
to reinforce that image. “
Sustainable and ethical business practices
“This also means that our business partners need to
be able to follow this vision. Our products should not
only be inexpensive but should also meet the strict
consumer requirements. Kaiser’s Tengelmann has
been working with Euro Pool System for ten years.
Annually, approximately nine million green Euro Pool
System crates rotate within our organisation. We are
delighted with this cooperation. There is a wide
choice of various containers. The availability, the
rotation and the washing process are well organised.
However, what is of chief importance to us is that
cooperation at a strategic level also progresses well.
Euro Pool System demonstrates that the system
indeed works. Moreover, they are able to think along
about future developments. It is our experience
from our monthly meetings that they have a sound
knowledge of all aspects within the chain.“
Multifunctional green containers
It is clear to Mr Kühnle: “Single-use containers are
giving way to reusable containers. The Euro Pool
System crates are multifunctional. We use the crates
mainly for the transport of fruit and vegetables and
for in-store presentation, ” he says. “But we shall
certainly examine which other products of ours may
be suitable for transport in Euro Pool System containers.
This would appear simple but is not necessarily
the case. A few years ago we switched to green
containers of Euro Pool System for our kohlrabi.
Packing kohlrabi in green crates with 12 pieces each
instead of in wooden crates with 20-25 pieces each
has considerably improved shelf life and product
quality. Although the logistics costs were somewhat
higher, overall costs turned out to be lower. This saved
Kaiser’s Tengelmann quite a bit of money. During the
process, Euro Pool System proved to be an invaluable
party. They anticipate our needs and are not set on
making a quick profit. Moreover, Euro Pool System is
process-oriented in its ideas and actions. This makes
our partnership so very worthwhile. We can depend
on each other,” according to Mr Kühnle.
